President’s Message
Our June meeting is coming up in a couple of weeks. We will be starting something new after the meeting when we can return to the meeting room for some hands on Photoshop training. We plan on doing this as often as practical. We have some members who have asked for such training on off-meeting days and we will work up a schedule for that as well.
Our July meeting was moved to the 19th to accommodate our speaker, former member Adrian Henson. We are planning to use our regular meeting day, the 12th, to provide hands-on camera training, as we did in January, for folks who are unsure of the camera or have purchased a new camera. We received great feedback from the January training day, and with vacation time approaching as we get deeper into summer, we wanted to offer that again. So plan on two opportunities to get together in July.
I just returned from a weekend at the Professional Photographer of North Carolina Spring Seminar in Morehead City. It was a great meeting with good classes and a shootout on Saturday at Ft. Macon. I’m sharing (on page 13) a couple of the images I took of a model in the Fort and on the dunes.
For those of you who have the free pass to the Carolina Photo Expo Trade Show in August, please don’t forget to pre-register. That will be a great opportunity to mingle with other great photographers and many of those who support the industry through their products.

On our cover “Flute Player” by Robert Hendrix. Robert swept the mini-competition in May, winning all three categories. See more of his work on pages 3 and 14. Our aim is to feature on the cover of each issue a photo by a different club member. Why not send us a couple of YOUR images? (They don’t have to be from a mini-comp or related to the season. Vertical orientation fits the newsletter design.)

Meeting Report, May 10, 2014
Tom Whelan shares advice on creating photo books; Robert Hendrix wins mini-comp in all categories When was the last time one member took all the Mini Comp Awards at one meeting? I don’t know—but Robert Hendrix did it this month in Color, Monochrome and Visionary. Congrats Robert. I hope to win one category someday. President Tom shared lots of great stuff going on in the next few months: The June 14th meeting will feature John Steady on
panning and re-composing, the mini print
competition, then Photoshop training—a possible
all-day event depending on the number of members
who are interested.
June 30th and July 28th: training on camera basics for
young 4-H members to be held in Trenton at the old
4-H headquarters. They will be shooting the
Trenton Mill
At the July 12th meeting: camera basics with
representatives from Canon and Nikon.
Ralph Wilson gave us more reasons to expand our knowledge in Photoshop Elements, particularly in retouching photos. Tom Whelan inspired us with his suggestions on making a photo book, emphasizing the importance of picking the right vendor (My Publisher is his favorite—check them out for big discounts) and “even though my daughter disagrees with me on ‘white space’—get as many pictures on a page as possible,” he advised. Use captions with your pictures in photo books; keep your cropping to a 4 by 6 ratio; and give yourself credit for your pictures. Use Photoshop Elements instead of collage building. Reasons to make an album: (1) archiving: get the
good pix out of the camera (Tom McCabe liked that one); (2) Family album—not just a “stack of pictures that will get lost” and not just putting them on Face Book; (3) a gift for someone special; (4) you have a story to tell. Picking the right vendor has a lot to do with print quality, binding, texture of paper. Tom recommends the “lay flat” binding (costs a little more but well worth it). Does the vendor communicate with you during the process? Do you get to see a proof before printing? Can you get additional copies AFTER printing? Is the vendor software accessible to you, the buyer? Is the software user-friendly? Can you edit pictures? Prices for 8.5 by 11 size from Sam’s Club or Shutterfly range from $25-$32 a copy. Final tip from Tom: before you send it to the vendor, “walk away” from it for a day or two. Then, come back and review your work.

New member profile: Claire Hageman Claire Hageman has been wielding a camera for about
30 years. But it was the opportunity to travel more that really got her interested in improving her skills. “I
continue to learn all the time,” she said.
Her next step is to replace her two Canons, an XTi and a G12. “I am definitely due for an upgrade!” she said. Currently, she uses iPhoto for post-processing on her iMac. But her goals include tackling Photoshop (see the
Club calendar!), as well as trying more macro, and developing her skill at photographing people.
Inspired by being outdoors, Claire’s interest in hiking and kayaking allows her to explore nature photography, particularly her favorite subjects of landscapes and water reflections. That’s why Alaska, with its “majestic mountains and tundra,” and the Galapagos Islands, with its wildlife, are her dream photography destinations. She also enjoys gardening, cooking, and reading.
Claire grew up in Charlotte and lived in Greensboro before moving to New Bern in 1988. One of her images was chosen for a juried art show at Bank of the Arts here.
Claire looks forward to the benefits of CPC membership: “I’m happy to be around people who love photography, and anxious to learn new things,” she said.

July 12 Know your camera: special training session offered Back in January the CPC had a training session for members who had gotten new cameras over the holidays. President Tom McCabe is planning to offer a similar training session again in July. “The July meeting was changed from the 12th to the 19th. However, we still have access to our spaces in the church on the 12th so we will designate that day as our next camera training day,”
Tom said. “We will have knowledgeable folks from both the Nikon and the Canon worlds. If you plan to attend, please make sure you bring your manual as well as your camera.” July 19 Club meeting, Centenary Church, New Bern.

Getting the hang of it: CPC members Mike Carter, Tom McCabe, Larry Cotton, Alan Welch, Chuck Colucci, Ralph Wilson, and Wayne Lytton pitched in to help Craven Arts Council staff
(executive director Carol Tokarski, above, center, and marketing associate Valerie Rissel, below, center) and other volunteers mount the club’s June exhibit at Bank of the Arts. Nearly 20 photographers, out of a current membership of over 70, each contributed up to five framed or gallery-wrapped works for display. Subject matter includes portraits, macro, landscapes, nautical scenes, and more, in color and monochrome. Make sure you stop by the exhibit before June 28. Photos by Jeanne Julian.

which represents more than 85 national associations; and The Royal Photographic Society (RPS) with over 11,000 members will all use the same definition for nature and wildlife categories for their respective competitions and exhibitions. The new definition will come in to effect in January 2015. The introduction of a common definition is primarily intended to provide clarity to competition entrants. Saturday, June 21: “painted barns” workshop with Jamie Konarski Davidson Photography pro Jamie Konarski Davidson says she loves to share the charm and mystery of the intriguing painted barns of Cameron—a favorite location of hers for over ten years. She will lead a one-day field workshop on June 21. “Opportunities for landscape, macro, HDR,

HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO EXPERIMENT WITH A FISHEYE LENS?
If so, ask Dave Slyck how he likes the new lens he just received for his Lumix GX1. “Every boy needs a new toy once in a while,” he said. “Having never really used a fisheye lens before, I decided to give
it a trial run at Captain Phillips in Swansboro.” The results are at right, with more on page 7.
