What are Biometrics?

Biometric Characterization
Universality:
the degree to which
the biometric trait is
present in all
members of the
target population.
Stability: the level of resistance of the biometric trait over ageing, disease, injury and other factors. Also known as “Permanence”.
Collectability: the ease by which good quality initial samples can be acquired. FTE is the relevant metric.
Resistance to circumvention: the vulnerability of the modality towards biometric fraud (such as impersonation or obfuscation).

Biometric Characterization
Acceptability:
consideration of
whether individuals
or groups may have
concerns about the
use of a specific
modality.
Usability:the ease by which a user can consistently provide their biometric samples to the system.
Cost: the average cost of• Devices used to collect
biometric samples
• Algorithms to compare/ match samples
• Any additional software/ hardware
• Throughput
Accuracy: typical indicators for verification are FAR (False Accept Rate) and FRR (False Reject Rate) under given environmental circumstances and for a defined population.

The head of Facebook’s artificial-intelligence research lab says the software can identify users 83% of the time even if their face isn’t visible
A class action lawsuit against Facebook says the data-hungry social media giant violated the Illinois Biometrics Information Privacy Act when it created the world’s largest face-print database without informing users of exactly how their images would be used or obtaining written consent to perform biometric searches on them.

Challenges
One third (33%) of consumers are
familiar with and think that facial
recognition technology is intrusive.
27% of retailers are using facial recognition
technology in-store..
This rose to 59% for fashion and
apparel retailers. The larger retailers (101-250
stores) use facial recognition most frequently (43%).

“You can always change the iris of your eye,” Schumer said.

What’s Next
• In the next five years, the fingerprint recognition technology is anticipated to continue leading
global biometrics market.
• The face recognition is expected to be at the same place but its market share is anticipated to
decrease more than 2% by 2017
• The steady growth in of iris recognition is anticipated
• Voice recognition is anticipated to increase its contribution marginally.
• Vein recognition is expected to outshine.
• Signature recognition is anticipated to grow at really slow rate as it enters in the declining phase.
