Food processing and beverage firmsacross Canada will be able to lease spaceand equipment in the new building ona short-term basis to carry out researchprojects.
This will be especially useful to smalland medium-sized enterprises whichhave limited funds for research andpurchase of research equipment. Mostof the 1,300 Quebec firms in the foodand beverage manufacturing field fallinto this category.
As a development tool for the food industry, research activity will focus onnew and improved processes of newproducts. Agricultural products involved are milk, meats, cereal grains,oilseeds, fruits and vegetables.
Flavours and aromas as food components will be other areas of study.There will also be scientific expertiseand equipment to deal with such biotechnology subjets as modification ofbacterial cells and use of enzymes.
The centre will have the latest inequipment and technology including 30controlled-atmosphere rooms. Fourpilot plants, including one for dairy products, will simulate manufacturingconditions.
An industrial engineering laboratorywill have the capacity to design andmanufacture equipment prototypesuseful to the food industry.
