Co-presentedbytwoofAustralia’smostdynamicartsorganisations–CarriageworksandSydneyDanceCompany–withgeneroussupportfromTheBalnavesFoundation,NewBreed2016willprovideAustralianchoreographersRachelArianneOgle(Perth),ShianLaw(Melbourne),JesseScales(Hobart)andRichardCilli(Perth)withaninvaluableopportunitytoworkwithAustralia’sfinestcontemporarydancersonthecreationofanewlycommissioneddancepiece.ThefournewworkscreatedbytheNewBreed2016choreographerswillbepresentedatSydney’spremiermulti-artsprecinct,Carriageworks,from29Novemberto10December2016.SydneyDanceCompanyandCarriageworks’NewBreedinitiativemadeitsdebutinNovember2014,supportingfiveyoungAustralianchoreographersthroughthecreationandpresentationofuniquenewdanceworks.Twosoldoutseasonsin2014and2015ensued.FollowingtheNewBreedprogram,Adelaide-basedNewBreed2014choreographerGabrielleNankivellwastherecipientofthe2015TanjaLiedtkeFellowshipforherworkWildebeest.WildebeestwillnowbepartofSydneyDanceCompany’sstunningnewdoublebillUntamed,performedalongsideArtisticDirectorRafaelBonachela'slatestwork,Anima.NewBreed2015premieredtomuchacclaiminLudwigshaven,GermanyandtomeetthedemandforticketsinAustralia,theSydneyseasonwasextended.ThethirdinstalmentintheNewBreedinitiative,deliveredduring2016,willseeCarriageworksandSydneyDanceCompanycontinuetheircommitmenttothefutureofAustraliancontemporarydance,bysupportingindependentchoreographersRachelArianneOgle,andShianLaw,andSydneyDanceCompanymembersJesseScalesandRichardCilli.FromAugustuntilDecember2016,thesedancemakerswillbenefitfromtheextensivesupportfromalldepartmentsofAustralia’sleadingcontemporarydancecompany,inreadinessfortheshowcaseoftheirfournewworksfrom29Novemberto10December2016atCarriageworks.SydneyDanceCompanyArtisticDirectorRafaelBonachelasays,“Foralmosthalfacentury,SydneyDanceCompanyhasbeenthehomeofcontemporarydanceinAustralia,withastrongdedicationtonurturingthenextgenerationofAustralianchoreographicartists.Weareproudtofurthercontributetothislegacythroughauniqueprogram,andtoinvestinwhatwebelieveistheveryfoundationofthefutureofAustraliancontemporarydance–itscreators.”CarriageworksDirectorLisaHavilahsays,“WithNewBreed2016,CarriageworksreinforcesitscommitmenttosupportingthedevelopmentofcontemporaryAustralianDanceandtocreatingprofessionalpathwaysforemergingchoreographers.WeareproudtobepartneringwithSydneyDanceCompanyandtheBalnavesFoundationforthethirdyearonthisimportantinitiativethatishelpingtodevelopnewaudiencesforAustraliandance.”VictoriaBalnavesofTheBalnavesFoundationsays,“TheBalnavesFoundationinassociationwithSydneyDanceCompanyandCarriageworksisexcitedtobeinvolvedinthethirdyearofNewBreed,aninnovativepartnershipwhichshowcasesemergingchoreographers.Thispartnershipprovidesacommitmenttoensuringthatsupportivecreativepathwaysexistforindependentartists.WearedelightedthatthepreviousperformancesofNewBreedhavebeensowellreceivedbothonalocalandinternationalplatformandweareconfidentthatthisyear’sselectionofchoreographerswillenjoyequalsuccess"

CillijoinedSydneyDanceCompanyin2009andin2010wontheHelpmannAwardforBestMaleDancerforhisperformanceinRafaelBonachela’sWeUnfold.DuringhisfouryearsattheCompanyheworkedwithrenownedchoreographersincludingEmanuelGat,JacopoGodaniandKennethKvarnström,andtouredextensivelynationally,regionallyandinternationally.
HewasthewinneroftheAustralianBallet’s50thAnniversaryBalletCompetition,alongwithcomposerJamesWadeanddesignerMonicaMorales,pitchingtheconceptandtreatmentofanewfulllengthballetentitledCorpusCallosum.
In2013CillidancedforLondonbasedchoreographerAlexanderWhitleyinTheMeasuresTakenatSadler’sWellsTheatre.HerestagedRafaelBonachela’sworkTheLandofYesandtheLandofNoonthestudentsoftheNewZealandSchoolofDanceanddevelopedandperformedQualia,ashortworkincollaborationwithNatalieAllenforPerth’sSTRUTDance.
Cillispent2014asamemberofK.Kvarnström&Co,theresidentdancecompanyofKulturhusetStadsteaterninStockholm,Sweden.HealsochoreographedandstagedanexcerptofhisworkCorpusCallosumonthedancersoftheAustralianBalletfortheiremergingchoreographers’seasonBodytorque.DNA.
2015sawCillireturntoSydneyDanceCompany.HeperformedinRafaelBonachela‘sFrameofMind,WilliamForsythe’sQuintett,DeNovo(2015),NewBreed(2015)andTriptych(2015).FrameofMindwonthe2015HelpmannAwardfor‘BestChoreographyinaDanceWork’and‘BestDanceWork’.JesseScalesHobart,TASBorninHobart,Tasmania,JesseScalescompletedherearlytraininginAdelaidewithTerrySimpsonwhereshegainedtheRADSoloSealat16.JessethenwentontostudyattheNewZealandSchoolofDance,majoringinClassicalBallet,andgraduatedin2011withaNationalCertificateinDancePerformance.In2011,JessewasarecipientoftheAdopteereendanserScholarshipwhichallowedhertoattendthe
