Whether you’re on vacation, just traveling through town, or a local makingthe rounds, no antiquing trip into Salt Lake City is complete without stoppingat Honest Jon’s Historic Hills’ House Antiques Gallery. As soon as you pullup to the curb outside the Victorian mansion which houses this exceptionalantiques shop, you suspect you might be in for a treat, and I promise you,you won’t be disappointed. Inside you’ll find Proprietor Jonathan Sweet, who has been plying his trade as an antiques dealer for more than 36 years, along with what is surely Utah’s finest collection of nineteenth and earlytwentieth century American furniture and carefully selected antique smallsand collectibles.
Opening his first shop at Trolley Square in 1972, Jon later moved to ArrowPress Square, and in 1976 relocated into a storefront along Broadway (300South), where he maintained his antiques business until 1983. In 1977, Jonbought and spent several years remodeling the house, which would becomehome to his antiques business for the next 26 years. The stately home, listedon the Historic Register was built in 1877 by Utah Banker Louis Hills (fromwhich the home retains its name), later owned by the Bennett Family andin the 1920’s was bought by a Basque family who converted the home intoa boarding house. For the next 50 years, the homes primary residents wouldbe Basque sheepherders, and working men looking for a temporary placeto live. By 1983, Jon had completed remodeling the home, and that yearopened Hills’ House antiques. To this day, this stately old house providesSalt Lake’s most idyllic setting for an antiques shop.
For many years, Jon advertized his shop as “an antiques shop inside amuseum”. He wasn’t exaggerating. Every room in this old home is filledwith fine antiques, many of which are museum quality. The only differencebeing, these pieces can be taken home to enrich our own lives.
As you walk through Hills’ House, you’re sure to notice the impeccablecondition of Jon’s merchandise. You can attribute this to two things. First,Jon believes in buying the best, and second is long time employee Jeff Medina.Jeff is responsible for taking care of any needed restoration andreconditioning, and it only takes a quick look around this fine shop to attestto his skills. Jeff also does restoration for collectors, and can be reachedeither at Hill’s House or at his own telephone, (801) 264-2422.
So, don’t miss stopping by this exceptional Antiques shop. You can parkout front on the street, or there’s more parking in back. Walk up to the frontporch, ring the bell, and Jon Sweet will greet you like an old friend, andwelcome you into what just might be Salt Lake City’s most remarkableantiquing experiences.

A SALT LAKE ANTIQUES TRADITION
JON SWEET 1949 - 2012
Our friend, and associate Jonathan Sweet, owner of Hills House AntiquesGallery, passed away on June 30th, 2012. Whatever it means to be anantiques dealer, Jon was surely that, peddling the finest antiques in SaltLake City, for almost 40 years. The word institution hardly does justice toJon’s place in the Utah antiques community. If you never had Jon try tosell you something, your antiques education was not complete.
Jon’s passing will leave a hole in the Utah antiques business, and in thehearts of his many friends and customers. To say he will be missed bymany seems cliché,

OVER 13,000 SQUARE FEET OF ANTIQUES
The embroidery process begins with firming a piece of silk tightly over a wooden stretcher. A design is then sketched on the silk by drawing simple outlines, then the artist uses fine needles and colorful silk threads to bring the image to life. The combination of the quality of silk, the thinness of the threads, the size of the picture and its complexity determine the difficulty and the cost of the production. Fine quality embroi-deries are done with 1/16 silk threads or silk threads divided 4 times The thinner the silk thread, the finer the art work. Layer upon layer of thread is built up to create dimensions, shadows and highlights, adding to the complexity. One piece of small art work can take as little as a half day to complete, but a large piece may take as long as three months or many years to complete.
HOW ARE THEY MADE?
