JC Leyendecker
If you were to ask Norman Rockwell who his favorite artist was he would have undoubtedly have said Joseph Christian Leyendecker. Twenty years his junior, Rockwell was heavily influenced by his friend Leyendecker. And although Norman Rockwell is the best known artist of Americana, much of his work is reinterpretations of themes established by J. C. Leyendecker. Leyendecker was born in Germany in 1874 and immigrated to Chicago with his family at the age of eight. By the time he was fifteen, his family could no longer afford his education and he apprenticed himself to J. Manz & Company, an engraving house. At the time, engraving houses did more than just reproductions and Leyendecker’s talent was recognized early. He wasn’t an errand boy long, when he was promoted to staff illustrator and then began designing posters and advertisements for Manz clients. At the tender age of nineteen he was called upon to produce 60 illustrations for a bible Manz & Co. was to produce (copies of which are rare and would be quite a find!) At this time, in the evenings, he took classes at the Chicago Art Institute where he studied drawing and anatomy under John H. Vanderpoel, whose books on anatomy are still sought after today. In the autumn of 1896 he and his brother, Frank (an accomplished artist in his own right), went to France to study art at the Academie Julian and Colarossi. The two brothers were considered the most talented in their class. That same year, J.C. Leyendecker won a Century Magazine cover competition – Maxfield Parrish took 2nd place! This led to some cover work for other national magazines and in 1898 he and his brother returned to Chicago and opened a gallery/studio. New York City, however, was the center of commercial art in the United States and the hub of the magazine industry and in 1900 the brothers moved their studio there. In 1905 Leyendecker created one of the most successful ad images in history when he created the Arrow Collar Man for Arrow Collars (later Arrow Shirts). He provided the bulk of Arrow’s advertising until 1930 helping to make Arrow the largest shirt brand in America. The popularity of the Arrow Shirt Man along with images he produced for other clothing companies such as Kuppenheimer Suits and Interwoven Socks epitomized the fashionable American male during the first part of the twentieth century. His influence on what men wore, and what women bought for their men, cannot be overstated. The year 1899 saw the beginning of perhaps the most important relationship of Leyendecker’s career. That is the year he painted his first cover for the Saturday Evening Post. Leyendecker worked with the Post for the next 44 years. In addition to numerous illustrations and advertisements for the inside of the magazine, he painted more than 320 covers – more than any other artist. (Interestingly, Norman Rockwell quit working for the Post one cover shy of Leyendecker’s record, perhaps as a tribute to his good friend and mentor.) As impressive as the sheer numbers are it is more important to note the influence Leyendecker had on American culture. His illustrations gave us the iconic New Year’s Baby and his image of a bellhop delivering flowers for Mother’s Day (the May 30, 1914 Saturday Evening Post cover which celebrated Woodrow Wilson’s declaration of Mother’s Day as an official holiday) ensured that Mothers for decades would receive flowers on their special day. Joseph Christian Leyendecker died of a heart attack in 1951 while working on a cover for American Weekly. Norman Rockwell was a pallbearer at his funeral. After his death his sister and his partner had a yard sale and sold off what was an extensive collection of canvases (he usually insisted on the return of his originals). Paintings could be bought for as little as $75 – this story is a great incentive to keep looking for finds at yard sales! And it is also notable here that the “buy it now” price on his painting for the Christmas 1921 cover for the Saturday Evening Post at Heritage Auctions is $475,000. While J. C. Leyendecker is not as well known today and has been somewhat forgotten by history, the last decade has seen new interest in his work. The Haggin Museum in Stockton, CA houses the largest collection for his work, which is displayed in a newly refurbished gallery after its return from a three year tour across America.

Judie Minie:
It’s a recipe for success. Take one dull old china cabinet, add one part paint, one part elbow grease, a little decoration, and stir in just the right amount of the special kind of wizardry provided by Chic & Unique partner Judie Minie, and voila, you’ve baked a dish of “Country Chic” that will satisfy any appetite. Mix in a customer
who shares Judies passion for repur-posed furniture, and it won’t be long before cabinet and customer go waltzing out the door together.
Taking her inspira-tion from her two favorite magazines – “Romantic Homes” and “Country Liv-ing” , Judie adds her own sense of style to e v e r y t h i n g s h e touches, transform-ing the mundane into unique treasures to pass on to her avid fans and customers. Judies latest obses-
sion is taking old tables and benches and giving them the driftwood-on-the-beach look that is becoming so popular. The next time you have “me” time to indulge yourself, stop in at Chic & Unique and check out Judie’s work. You might just find yourself saying, “this is my new favorite store!”
