FCIWG Fall Meeting Review September 12, 2012 BIG THANKS go out to the Ribault Club on Ft. George Island and the FL DEP staff there who hosted us. What a great location, we have so many wonderful places tucked away in our CISMA to get out and explore! FCIWG Business:

•Over 25 people came out in the heat of the summer to help clear Tamarix at Reed Island on August 22 & 23. This event was in partnership with Tony Pernas and his EPMT crew, what a cool state wide collaboration! Jessica Spencer, FCIWG Co-Chair and Lead Tamarix Annihilator, was blown away at how much was accomplished, as over 12 acres of dense infestation were decimated!

•We are revitalizing our FCIWG Subcommittees! Please click here to view the different committees and opportunities to participate with FCIWG.

Featured Presentation:

•Dr. Ken Langeland, UF gave a great presentation on Old World Climbing Fern (OWCF). In case you haven't heard, OWCF has been confirmed in Duval County and FCIWG is responding rapidly to address this initial isolated case. It is important in our area to learn to distinguish Japanese climbing fern (Lygodium japonicum) from OWCF (Lygodium microphyllum). Dr. Langeland stressed that while Japanese climbing fern is quite prevalent in our region and certainly a concern, it's habits and expansion is nothing compared to what has been observed with OWCF. This is some seriously nasty stuff!

•Click here to view Dr. Langeland's Presentation

and here for a cheat sheet on how to tell OWCF from Japanese Climbing Fern.

THIS WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 8:00 AM Brian Camposano (FFS) and Brian Burket (City of Jacksonville) will lead our EDRR volunteer teams on site. The goal of this workday is to determine the extent of the OWCF infestation at this site. The City of Jacksonville and the Florida Forestry Service have already started treating what they have found, but also believe the infestation to be larger than originally thought. All eyes are needed to help assess the situation and make sure we ELIMINATE this occurrence while we have the chance! Location: Meet at the parking lot of the Jacksonville Equestrian Center Click here for directions Please RSVP to Brian Camposano ([email protected]) if you are able to attend or have any additional questions.
