አዲስ አበባን የሚቀርፃት ሕዝቧ ነው፣ ሕዝቧንም የምትቀርፀው አዲስ አበባ ናት፡፡ በየቀኑ፣ በኢትዮጵያዋ የማኅበራዊ እና ባህላዊ እሴቶች ማዋሐጃዋ ከተማ ጎዳናዎች ላይ፣ የተለያዩ ዜማዎች እና ዳንሶች ሲከወኑ እናያለን፡፡ ስሜቶቻችን እኒህን በደንብ ያውቋቸዋል፤ ምናልባትም ከዚያም በላይ ያውቋቸዋል፡፡ አንዳንዴ ተወዳጅ፣ አንዳንዴ በመጠኑ ቢሆኑም፣ እያንዳንዳችን ለዚህች ከተማ ሐሳቦችን እና ምስሎችን ቀርጸናል፣ ከእርሷም ጋር ዝምድና ፈጥረናል፡፡ ነገር ግን፣ ዐይኖቻችን፣ ጆሮዎቻችን፣ አፍንጫዎቻችን፣ አካሎቻችን እና አእምሮዎቻችን ከለመድናት ውጭ የሆነች፣ ሌላ ዐይነት አዲስ አበባን የመሞከር ዕድል ቢሰጣቸው ምን ይፈጠራል?

አሁን እየተካሔደ ባለው በ3ኛው ዓመት ዝግጅቱ፣ ፌስቲቫሉ የከተማዋ ሕይወት ምን ሊመስል እንደሚችል በአዲስ ዐይነት አጉሊ መነፅር ያሳያል፡፡ ለእዚህም በኪነጥበባት እና ባህሎች አማካይነት ፣ ከድንገቴ የክዋኔ ተሳትፎዎች እስከ የመንገድ ላይ ጥበብ እና ስነጥበብ፣ አዲስ አበባን ለአንድ ሳምንት በአዳዲስ ቀለማት በጋራ ለማፍካት ኢትዮጵያዊያን የፈጠራ አእምሮዎች ሁሉንም ሰው ይጋብዛሉ፡፡

Most importantly, this festival is made possible thanks to the pas-sionate and creative artists groups and their love for reaching out and bringing about change for the residents of Addis Abeba. Now, it’s Tibeb time again – let’s be creative and shape this city together!

The Tibeb be Adebabay Team 2019

It is the people that shape Addis Abeba and it is Addis Abeba that shapes people. Day after day, we witness the different rhythms and choreographies that occur in the streets of Ethiopia’s social and cultural melting pot. Our senses have come to know them well, too well even maybe. At times beloved and at times less so, each one of us has carved out a particular idea, image, and relationship with this city. But what happens when our eyes, ears, noses, bodies, and minds are given the chance to experience another kind of Addis Abeba, other than the one we are used to?

Now running in its 3rd annual edition, Tibeb be Adebabay offers a new kind of lens to what life in the city can be about. Through art and culture, from spontaneous interventions over participatory performances to Street Art and Fine Art, Ethiopia’s creative minds invite everyone to come together for one week to make Addis Abeba bloom in new colours.

The festival’s trademark Suks (Amharic for shop or kiosk) can be found in selected lo-cations around the city, offering a daily pro-gramme where visitors can engage with the artists, the places, and the people. In addition, we are thrilled to announce that this year Tibeb be Adebabay will, for the first time, col-laborate with the Car Free Day.

Tibeb be Adebabay (Amharic for art in public space) is a joint effort by the Goethe-Insti-tut in Addis Abeba together with The Urban Center and various Ethiopian artists from dif-ferent disciplines, supported by the Delega-tion of the European Union to Ethiopia.

የፌስቲቫሉ መለዮ የሆኑት ሱቆች በከተማዋ በተመረጡ ቦታዎች ቆመው፣ ጎብኚዎች ከከያኒያኑ፣ ከሥፍራዎቹ እና ከሰዎች ጋር የሚቀራረቡባቸውን ፕሮግራሞች ያቀርባሉ፡፡ በተጨማሪም፣ የዘንድሮው ጥበብ በአደባባይ “ከመኪና ነጻ ቀን” ጋር መገጣጠሙን ስንገልፅ ከፍተኛ ደስታ ይሰማናል፡፡

ጥበብ በአደባባይ የአዲስ አበባው ጎተ-ኢንስቲቲዩት፣ በከተማ ማዕከል እና በኢትዮጵያ የአውሮፓ ኅብረት ቋሚ ልኡክ፣ እንዲሁም በልዩ ልዩ ሙያዎች ላይ ያሉ የተለያዩ ኢትዮጵያዊያን ከያኒያን የትብብር ጥረት ነው፡፡ የኢትዮጵያ ፌዴራላዊ ዴሞክራሲያዊ ሪፐብሊክ እና የባህል እና ቱሪዝም ሚኒስቴርን ስለ ታላቅ ድጋፍ እና ማበረታቻዎቻቸው እናመሰግናልን፤ በተጨማሪም የአዲስ አበባ ከተማ መስተዳድር የባህል እና ቱሪዝም ቢሮ፣ እንዲሁም የቦሌ፣ አራዳ፣ ልደታ እና ቂርቆስ ክፍለ ከተማዎች የባህል እና ቱሪዝም ጽሕፈት ቤቶች እና የአዲስ አበባ ከተማ የትራፊክ ማኔጅመንት ኤጀንሲ በሎጂስቲክስ፣ በፈቃድ እና በአጭሩ ይህንን ፕሮጀክት እውን በማድረግ ረገድ ከእኛ ጋር በቅርብ በመሥራታቸው ልናመሰግናቸው እንወዳለን፡፡

ከቅንጦት ሳይሆን ከባህላዊ መሠረተ ፍላጎት የተወለደው ጥበብ በአደባባይ የኪነጥበብን ምናባዊ ዓለማት ለሁሉም ቅርብ ለማድረግ ወደ ጎዳናዎች ይዟቸው ይወጣል፡፡ ከተለያዩ የህይወት መንገዶች የሚመጡ ሰዎች የፌስቲቫሉን የማሳያ ሱቆች ጎብኝተው፤ አዳዲስ ክህሎቶችን እንዲያውቁ፣

አ ድ ማ ሳ ታ ቸ ው ን እንዲያሰፉ፣ እንዲሁም አዳዲስ ተመክሮዎችን እንዲቀስሙ ዕድል ይሰጣቸዋል፡፡

ማህደር ከተማ ማዕከል ለምን እና እንዴት የጥበብ በአደባባይ 2011 አካል እንደሆነ ልትነግረን ትችላለህ?

ማህደር፡-የማ አርክቴክቸር በተባለው ድርጅታችን እና “ከቤት እስከ ከተማ” በተማለው የሬዲዮ ፕሮግራሙ አማካይነት ከጎተ-ኢንስቲቲዩት ጋር ስንሠራ ረጅም ጊዜ ሆኖናል፤ ከተፀነሰበት ጊዜ አንስቶም የጥበብ በአደባባይ አንድ አካል ሆነን ሥራዎቻችንን በ2009 እና በ2010 ፕሮግራም ላይ አሳይተናል፡፡ በዚህ ዓመት አዲስ ድርጅት አቋቁመናል - ከተማ ማዕከል፡፡ ለከተማ ምክክሮች፣ ውይይቶች፣ ክርክሮች እና ለሌሎችም ጉዳዮች የተዘጋጀ ዝግጅቶች ማካሄጃ እና ትስስር መፍጠሪያ ሥፍራ ነው፡፡ አማካይ ቦታ ላይ ማለትም መስቀል አደባባይ፣ ከእስጢፋኖስ ቤተክርስቲያን ፊት ለፊት የኢትዮጵያ ሴቶች ፌዴሬሽን ሕንፃ ምድር ላይ ነው ያለው፡፡ የሕንፃው የተለየ ዲዛይን እና ሰፊ እና ጋባዥ ሥፍራው በጎበኙንና የጥንታዊነት ስሜቱን በወደዱት ብዙ እንግዶቻችንን ተደንቋል፡፡

ከተማ ማዕከሉ ራሱ አገሪቷን የማሳደግ እና ማኅበራዊ ለውጥ የማምጣት ዓላማ ኖሯቸው በከተማ፣ በማኅበራዊ እና በተዛማጅ ጉዳዮች ለማካፈል፣ ለመቀላቀል እና ለመሳተፍ ለሚፈልጉ ከኢትዮጵያም ይሁን ከውጭ ለሚመጡ ሰዎች የተዘጋጀም ነው፡፡ ከሐሳቦቹ አንዱም በሐሳብ ከሚመስሉት ሰዎች፣ ተቋማት እና ጽንሰ ሐሳቦች ጋር አብሮ መሥራት ነው፡፡ ጥበብ በአደባባይ ከእነዚህ አንዱ ነው፡፡ በዚህ ዓመት በተባባሪነት ፌስቲቫሉን የተቀላቀልነው በሕዝብ መሰብሰቢያ ሥፍራዎች የሚከወን ስነጥበብ የለዋጭነት ኃይል እንዳለው ስለምናምን ነው፡፡ ለሁለት ዋና ዋና ክንውኖች እንዲያስተናግድ ከተማ ማዕከሉን ከፌስቲቫሉ ማካሄጃዎች አንዱ እንዲሆን በማቅረባችን፣ በ“ስነጥበብ” ሥፍራነት እና በአዲስ አበባ የፈጠራዎች ማዕከልነት ያለንን ዕውቅና ከማሳደጋችን በተጨማሪ፣ በሰፊው ካየነው፣ በከተማዋ ውስጥ ስለስነጥበብ እና ባህል ያለውን ግንዛቤም ይበልጥ ከፍ እናደርጋለን፡፡ ከጎተ-ኢንስቲቲዩት ጋር በትብብር የምንሠራው ለዚህ ነው፡፡

ከልምድህ በመነሳት ጥበብ በአደባባይ አዲስ አበባ ላይ ምን የሚጨምረው እሴት አለው?

ማህደር፡-ጥበባቱን ወደ ጎዳናዎች ይዟቸው ይወጣል፤ ነዋሪዎችም በፈለጉት ጊዜ፣ እንዳመቻቸው ወደ ጥበባቱ ይሄዳሉ፡፡ የዕለት ተዕለት ሥራቸው ላይ እያሉም ከክንውኖቹ አንዱ ሊያጋጥማቸው ይችላል፡፡ ፌስቲቫሉ ለሌሎች (ጥበባዊ)ክንውኖች እና አስተሳሰቦች መነሻ የሚሆኑ የተለያዩ ዓይነት ውይይቶችና ንግግሮችንም ያስጀምራል፡፡ የሠራናቸው እና በዚህ ዓመት የሚሠሩት የጥበብ ሥራዎች እና ኢንስታሌሽኖች በሙሉ ሰዎችን ለፈጠራ የሚያነቃቁ ውይይቶችን እና ሐሳቦችን ያጭራሉ፡፡ ለአዲስ አበባ ነዋሪዎችም በየቀኑ ከሚያዩዋቸው የተለየ አዲስ ነገር ይሰጧቸዋል፡፡ ጥበብ በአደባባይ የከተማዋን ገፅታ ይለውጣል፡- ቀለሙ የተለየ፣ የተግባቦት መንገዱም የተለየ ነው፡፡ ከከተማዋ የዕለት ተዕለት ንቁ እቅስቃሴዎች እና ከነዋሪዎቿም የዕለት ተዕለት ክንውኖች ጋር ራሱን ያዋሕዳል፡፡ ለምሳሌ ወደ መደበኛ የስነጥበብ ቦታዎች ሳይሄዱ የሚዝናኑበትን እና የሚማሩበትን ዕድል ይሰጣል፡፡ ጥበብ በአደባባይ ለአዲስ አበባ ነዋሪዎች የጨመረላቸው እሴት ይሄ ይመስለኛል፡፡

ጥበብ በአደባባይ የዛሬ አምስት ዓመት የት የሚደርስ ይመስልሃል፣ ወይም ለፌስቲቫሉ ያለህ ርእይ ምንድነው?

ማህደር፡-በመጀመሪያ አዲስ አበባ ውስጥ ይቆይና፣ ምናልባት የዛሬ ሁለት ዓመት፣ አምስተኛው ዙሩ ላይ ወደ አገሪቱ ሌሎች ከተሞች የሚሄድ ይመስለኛል፡፡ በደንብ ከታቀደ እና ተባባሪዎችና በቂ የገንዘብ ድጋፍ ከተገኘ፣ በከተማዋ የጥበባት ካላንደር ከዋነኞቹ ዝግጅቶች አንዱ የሚሆንም ይመስለኛል፡፡ ለወደፊቱ ከግዙፍ ኩባንያዎች ጋር በትብብር ቢሠራ ጥሩ ነው የሚል ሐሳብ አለኝ፡፡ ፈንዱ ቋሚ ከሆነ፣ ተጨማሪ ከያኒያንን ማካተት፣ ተጨማሪ አርእስተ ጉዳዮችን መጨመር እና ፌስቲቫሉም ረዘም ላለ ጊዜ እንዲቆይ ማድረግ እንችላለን፡፡ በቀላሉ ለመናገር፡- ጥበብ በአደባባይ እያደገ እያደገ ይሄዳል፡፡ ከዚህ በተጨማሪም፣ ዘንድሮ እንደምናደርገው በጥሩ የሰነድ አያያዝ፣ በፓነል ውይይቶች እና በመሳሰሉት አማካይነት፣ ፌስቲቫሉ በተለይ በመደበኛ መገናኛ ብዙኃን ከተላለፈ በኅብረተሰቡ ላይ ከዚህም የበለጠ ተፅዕኖ መፍጠር ይችላል፡፡

Maheder Gebremedhin Borga is the prin-cipal architect of Yema Architecture and the producer and presenter of the weekly radio show Kebet Eske Ketema. As if this would not be enough, he is also the direc-tor of The Urban Center in Addis Abeba and a long-standing member of Tibeb be Adebabay.

Maheder, can you tell us more about how and why The Urban Center is part of Tibeb be Adebabay 2019?

Maheder: We have been collaborating with the Goethe-Institut both through our company Yema Architecture and its radio show “Kebet Esek Ketema” for long and we have been part of Tibeb be Adebabay since its inception, showcasing our work in both the 2017 and the 2018 events. This year, we have established a new venture - The Urban Center. which is an event and networking space for urban dialogues, discussions, debates and much more. It is centrally located just opposite of Esti-fanos Church near Meskel Square on the ground floor of the Ethiopian Women Federation Building. The unique design of the building and its spacious and inviting space in particular have been appreciated by many of our visitors who are fond of its vernacular feel.

The Urban Center itself is dedicated to bringing people together who wish to share, engage and participate in urban, social and related matters in Ethiopia and beyond with the purpose of contrib-uting to the development of the country and societal change. Part of its concept is to collaborate with like-minded peo-ple, institutions and concepts. Tibeb be Adebabay is one of those. We joined the festival this year as collaborators because we have always believed in the transfor-mational power of art in public spaces. By offering The Urban Center as one of the festival venues for two major activities, we will not only increase our visibility as an “arts venue” and center for creatives in Addis Abeba but also raise more aware-ness for the arts and culture in the city on a broader level. That is why we are collaborating with the Goethe-Institut on this project.

From your experience what added value does Tibeb be Adebabay bring to Addis Abeba?

Maheder: It takes the arts to the streets and residents can go there in their own time and convenience. While they are minding their daily business they might encounter one of the activities. The fes-tival also starts different types of dis-cussions and conversations which result in inspirations for other activities and thought processes. All the art works and installations that we have done and that will be done this year will trigger discus-sions and thoughts by which people get inspired. Also, it gives residents of Addis Abeba something new from the regular things they see every day. Tibeb be Ade-babay changes the face of the city: the colour is different, the medium is differ-ent. It blends into the vibrant daily activ-ities of the city and the daily routine of residents. It will give an opportunity to be entertained and educated without going to the regular art venues, for instance. I think this is the added value Tibeb be Adebabay brings to the residents of Addis Abeba.

Where do you see Tibeb be Adebabay in five years or what is your vision for it?

Maheder: I think it will first stay in Ad-dis Abeba and, after having learned from its past experiences, maybe at its 5th in-stalment, in two years from now, it will move on to other cities in the country. If planned properly and if there are collab-orators and enough funding, I think it can become one of the main events in the arts calendar of the city. For the future, I sug-gest to collaborate with corporate com-panies. If the funding is constant we can add more artists, more subjects, and have the festival over an extended period of time. Simply put: Tibeb be Adebabay can keep growing and growing. Further, with a good documentation, panel discussions and the like, as we are doing it this year, the festival could have even more impact on the society, especially if it gets shared through mainstream media.

አዲስን ማስተጋባት መሠረታዊ ትምህርቶችን፣ የፈጠራ ልምምዶችን፣ እና ለመንገደኞች የኪነሕንፃን እና የከተሜነትን መሠረታዊ መርሆች የሚያሳዩ ዕይታዊ መምሪያዎችን በማቅረብ፤ አዲስ አበቤዎች በሁለት ተዛማጅ ክንውኖች ላይ እንዲሳተፉ ይጋብዛል፡፡ ሁለቱም በለመድነው እና ዕለት ከዕለት በምንጋፈጠው ውስጥ ያልተለመደን ነገር እንድናይ፣ ሙሉ በሙሉ ዐዳዲስ በሆኑ ዕይታዎች ከተማዋን ለመረዳት እና ከከተማዋም ጋር ዐዲስ ዐይነት መስተጋብር ለመፍጠር ያስችሉናል፡፡ የመጀመሪያው ክንዋኔ ከባለፈው ምዕተ ዓመት ስለተመረጡ የኪነሕንፃ ውጤቶች ውይይት ማመቻቸት ነው፡፡ ተሳታፊዎች የኪነሕንፃ ውጤቶቹን በስም እና በተሠሩበት ዘመን እንዲለዩዋቸው ይጠየቃሉ፤ በዚያውም ስላሁኗ አዲስ አበባ ታሪክ እና ስለለውጦቿ ውይይት ይቀሰቀሳል፡፡ በግምት ከአምስት እስከ አስር ደቂቃ ብቻ የሚወስደው ይህ ክንውን፣ የማይረሳ ስሜትን ይፈጥራል፤ ማንም ሰው በወደፊት ሕይወቱ ውስጥ የሚያጋጥሙትን ጉልህ የኪነሕንፃ ውጤቶች በጥንቃቄ እንዲመለከት ያበረታታል፡፡ ሁለተኛው ክንውን የከተማዋን አንድ ክፍል በምናብ የመሳል ፈተና ነው፡፡ ተሳታፊዎች እንደ ተፈጥሯዊ ገፀ ምድሮች፣ መሠረተ ልማቶች እና የመጓጓዣ መንገዶች ያሉ ውስብስብ ጽንሰ ሐሳቦች ይቀርቡላቸውና፣ አንድን ከተማ ሕያው ለማድረግ የሚያስችሉ ነገሮችን እንዲጨምሩ የሚጠይቅ ከባድ ፈተና ይሰጣቸዋል፡፡ በሌላ አነጋገር፡- ለሁሉም እኩል የምታገለግል ከተማ ለመገንባት ምን ያስፈልገናል? በውጤቱም፣ ከተለያዩ የከተማዋ ነዋሪዎች የሚዋጣ አንድ ድምር የከተማ ንድፍ እና የከተማ ሕይወት ይዘጋጃል፤ በመጨረሻም ሰዎች ምን ዓይነት ከተማ መገንባት እንደሚፈልጉ የሚያንፀባርቅ ሐሳብ ተጨምቆ ይወጣል፡፡

THE PROGRAMME

By offering basic teachings, creative exercises, and visual guidelines that show passersby the fundamental principles of architecture and ur-banism, Echoing Addis invites the people of Addis Abeba to participate in two related activities. Both enable us to see something unfamiliar in what we are accustomed to and are confronted with day-by-day, allowing us to experience and interact with the city in entirely new ways. The first activity facilitates a conversation with selected archi-tectural pieces from the past century. The participant is being chal-lenged to identify the architectural pieces by name and period of con-struction, in turn initiating a discussion on the history and becoming of the current Addis Abeba. Only consuming an estimated five to ten min-utes, this activity initiates a lasting impression, encouraging anyone to carefully observe significant architectural pieces in future endeav-ours. The second activity is presented as a challenge to (re)imag-ine a part of the city. Participants are faced with rather complex concepts, such as natural landscapes, infrastructures and modes of access, and given the difficult task to insert elements that make a city operational. In other words: What do we need to build a city so it can work for everyone? As a result, an aggregate of urban de-sign and urban life as imagined by residents from all walks of life is being produced, ultimately, so the idea, reflecting the kind of city that the people want.

አዲስን ማስተጋባት በኢትዮጵያ አርኪቴክቸር፣ ሕንፃ ግንባታ እና ከተማ ልማት ተቋም (ሕንፃ ኮሌጅ) የቀድሞ ተማሪዎች የተመሠረተ፣ በበእምነት ደምሴ እና በያስሚን አብዱ የሚመራ ስብስብ ነው፡፡ ጥበብ በአደባባይ በጎተ ኢንስቲቲዩት ከተፀነሰበት ከ2009 ጀምሮ አብሮ በመዝለቅ፣ ይህ የትጉህ ወጣቶች ስብስብ ሥራዎቹን በማቅረብ ሌሎችን ሲያነቃቃ፣ እርስበርስ ስለተጋመዱት የኪነ ሕንፃ እና የነገረ ከተማ ሙያዎች ሰፊ ግንዛቤ በመፍጠር የፌስቲቫሉን ተፅዕኖ ሲያጎላ ቆይቷል፡፡

The Echoing Addis col-lective was founded by alumni of the Ethiopian Institute of Architecture, Building Construction and City Develop-ment (EiABC), led by Bemnet Demissie and Yasmin Abdu. Having come a long way with Tibeb Be Adebabay since its inception at the Goethe-Institut in 2017, this team of young passionate profes-sionals has been sharing their work, inspiring and magnifying the festival’s impact by raising greater awareness for the intertwined disciplines of architecture and urbanism.

THE PROGRAMME

Cities are hosts to our homes that we inhabit, the paths that we walk,

the places that we frequent, and the things that we consume. While

the urban scenery changes every day, sometimes even within split-sec-

onds, the changes usually do not occur naturally but are the direct and

indirect products of our collective hands and minds. Unfortunately or

fortunately, it so happens that we all have different ideas of what our

cities should be like since every individual is different and has different

desires and priorities. So, what to do? NArcHome Architecture tries to

tackle this immense challenge by offering a platform for the residents of

Addis Abeba where they can express and share their ideas with a wider

public and potential decision-makers. If you want to have a say in how

your city should be made, it all begins with expressing your ideas, after

all. Through a collage board titled “The Addis Abeba [A2] We Deserve”

and with the help of visual and physical media, including three-dimen-

sional models, NArcHome Architecture aims to collect people’s needs,

comments, and suggestions. In this manner, the interactive social ex-

periment triggers city making discourses and processes by addressing

the past, present and possible future of the city, transforming would-be

bystanders into active agents of urban change.

THE CURATORS

Founded in 2017 by the grad architect Nahom Teklu, NArcHome Archi-

tecture has come to life as an initiative that promotes and executes

humanistic designs for the built environment and the society. By creat-

ing greater awareness for Addis Abeba’s architecture, urbanization and

environmental conservation, NArcHome Architecture is cultivating an

urban community that is concerned, proactive, and conscious about the

way we want to live collectively in the near and far-away future.

THE PROGRAMME

A little bit of fun never hurt nobody. And when fun is paired with action it results in play. Now, when play is used more professionally and strategically, we call it game thinking, encompass-ing the entire range of games for entertainment, serious games, gamification, simulation and the playful design of experiences. And it might best describe what Chewata Awaqi and D5 is all about. Chewata Awaqi (an Amharic term that translates into game wizard or a wise person with a sense of fun) and D5 (or “Dedicated 5”) is once again part of Tibeb be Adebabay to not only bring joy to the streets but also to address current challenges within Addis Abeba and our livelihoods - through games. This year, Chewata Awaqi and D5 is moving around different places in Addis Abeba so anyone can join their analogue, physical, and digital games. They, literally, invite you to play with corruption money and natural resources, face a “Free Hug” challenge that counters the feeling of anonymity in the city crowds, and enable you to experience a different kind of world through augmented reality. And this is just to name a few of the many, many, many games they have in store for us.

THE CURATORS

Chewata Awaqi was founded by six aspiring entrepreneurs. Since 2018, they have a perma-nent presence in the Goethe-Institut’s in-house “Enter Africa” project, a network of gamification experts from 15 different African countries. One could say that Chewata Awaqi is part of an African gaming ecosystem that aims to connect and empower architects, software engineers, graphic designers, game designers, and gamification experts from all over the African continent in order to address and tackle both very similar and very different challenges in their respective cultures and countries. In other words: They detect African issues and offer African solutions. D5 is also part of this network, specifically offering a platform for the gaming industry in the local Ethiopian community. Both believe games are the highest form of expression and art in that they make the audience be more than simple spectators or listeners. In games, the audience is also the artist as they not only consume but engage with the art and express themselves in it. That’s why game thinking can create a significant social impact. “Simply put we design expe-riences, we design human expression. We Design aha’s, oooooow’s, hmmm’s, OMG’s, no way’s, mts’s…”, Chewata Awaqi sums it up.

THE PROGRAMME

They move differently, they look differently, they appear to be from another world. And yet, they are one of us. Who are we talking about? We are talking about Destino Dance Company, a group of dancers who will be perform-ing some of their one-of-a-kind choreographies during Tibeb be Adebabay 2019. While expectations are generally misplaced when it comes to Destino, here is a small appetizer to what awaits us: In one of their impromptu cho-reographies, the inhabitants of Addis Abeba will get a surprise visit by an unidentified group of people who appear to be traveling through time. No one really understands their purpose of visit but they are making random appearances in the public sphere nonetheless. Neither are they dangerous, nor do they wish to kidnap anyone. They are simply curious and, most of all, they wish to interact with you. Their performance is highly engaging in so far that it brings together different groups of people that otherwise are rarely seen together because they seem to have no means of communicating with each other on eye level. So when language fails, it is body language that can create a bridge and this is exactly what Destino Dance Company continues to be doing.

THE CURATORS

Destino is a contemporary dance and performance company based in Addis Abeba, established in 2014 by two Ethiopian contempo-rary dancers, Addisu Demissie and Junaid Jemal Sendi. With over 20 years of experience as dancers, choreographers and teachers, their mission is to promote ethio-contemporary dance in Ethiopia and abroad. Moreover, they lead outreach programmes that use dance as a primary tool for social change. From working on the streets of Addis Abeba to the most prestigious stages in the world, the found-ers believe that dance has the power to transform lives by help-ing young people develop their potential and achieve their dreams. Currently, Destino provides a dance platform for the disadvantaged and vulnerable, including those visually impaired and with physical disabilities.

ዴስቲኖ አዲስ አበባ ውስጥ መሠረቱን ያደረገ የዘመናዊ ዳንስ እና የክዋኔ ኩባንያ ነው፤ በ2006/7 በሁለት ኢትዮጵያዊያን ዘመናዊ ዳንሰኞች በአዲሱ ደምሴ እና በጁነይድ ጀማል ሰንዲ ተመሠረተ፡፡ በዳንሰኝነት፣ በኬሮግራፈርነት እና በአስተማሪነት ለ20 ዓመታት ልምድ አካብተዋል፤ ዓላማቸው ኢትዮ-ዘመናዊ ዳንስን በኢትዮጵያ እና በውጭ ሐገራት ማስተዋወቅ ነው፡፡ በተጨማሪም፣ ዳንስን በዋነኛ የማኅበራዊ ለውጥ መሣሪያነት የሚጠቀም ፕሮግራምም ይመራሉ፡፡ ከአዲስ አበባ ጎዳናዎች እስከ በዓለም ላይ እስካሉ አጅግ የተከበሩ መድረኮች የሠሩት መሥራቾቹ፣ ዳንስ ወጣቶች እምቅ አቅማቸውን አሳድገው ሕልማቸውን እንዲያሳኩ በማገዝ ሕይወትን የመለወጥ ኃይል እንዳለው ያምናሉ፡፡ አሁን፣ ዴስቲኖዎች የተቸገሩትን እና ለችግር የተጋለጡትን፣ ማየት የተሳናቸውንና አካል ጉዳተኞችን ጭምር የሚያሳትፍ የዳንስ መድረክ ፈጥረዋል፡፡

በዚህ ዓመቱ ጥበብ በአደባባይ፣ ዳርዮስ ኃይለሚካዔል እና ክብሩ መልኬ ሕዝብ በሚንቀሳቀስበት ቦታ ላይ ሸራ ወጥረው፣ የአዲስ አበባን ሕዝቦች በተዘጋጁላቸው ቁሳቁሶች አማካይነት የእጆቻቸውን መዳፎች አስደግፈው እንዲስሉ፣ እንዲያትሙ እና ኮላዥ እንዲሠሩ ለመጋበዝ አቅደዋል፡፡ ዓላማው የስነጥበብን መሠረታዊ አላባዎች እየተማርን፣ እኛ ጊዜን እና ሥፍራን የምንጋራው ሰዎች ማን እንደሆንን የምንገልፅበት የተለየ መንገድ በመፍጠር፣ በጋራ አንድ ህብሩ የሰመረ ሥራ መፍጠር ነው፡፡ ልክ የየግለሰቡ መዳፍ የጣት አሻራ ልዩ እንደሆነው ሁሉ- የሰው ልጅ ሁሉም እንዲሁ የተለያየ ነው፡፡ ሆኖም መፍጠር ፣ ክብደት መሸከም፣ መባረክ፣ ቀና ምልከት ወይም ክፉ ምልክት መስጠት፣ እንጀራ ማጉረስ፣ ወይ ደግሞ እጆችን መያዝ የሚችለው አንድ ጣት ሳይሆን እጃችን ነው፡፡ በዚያ ላይ፣ እጆች በተፈጥሮ ጥንድ ጥንድ ሆነው መገኘታቸው በዘይቤያዊውም ይሁን በቀጥታ፣ የእጆች የእርስ በርስ መረዳዳት የግድ መሆኑን ያመለክታል፡፡ እጆቻችንን በዳርዮስ እና በኪሩቤል ሥራ ውስጥ በጋራ እንዳስገባን እያንዳንዱ ግለሰብም የማኅበረሰቡ ውጤት መሆኑ እና እንደተነጠሉ ለሚሰማቸው ሰዎች የአብሮነት እና የአንድነት ስሜት ሊመለስላቸው መቻሉ ግልፅ ይሆንልናል ፡፡

አዘጋጆቹ

ዳርዮስ ኃይለሚካዔል የኢንስታሌሽን አርቲስት ሲሆን የሚታወቀው የፕላስቲክ ተረፈ ምርቶችን እና ሌሎች የወዳደቁ ዕቃዎችን በመጠቀም ስነጥበባትን በመፍጠሩ ነው፡፡ በአዲስ አበባ ጎዳናዎች ላይ ወዲያ ወዲህ በሚልበት ጊዜ፣ ኢትዮጵያ የውጭ ሃገራትን በርካታ ሃሳቦች እንደ መለኪያ እንደምትወስድ አስተውሏል፡፡ ይሄ ደግሞ ዙሪያችንን በከበቡን ህንፃዎች፣ በመኪኖች እና በስማርት ስልኮቻችን በጉልህ ይታያል፡፡ የኢትዮጵያውያን ስነጥበብስ? ሌላው ዓለም በሚያደርገው ልክ ኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ ላለው ስነጥበብ አድናቆት እናሳያለን? የጋለሪ ቦታዎችን በሕዝባዊ ቦታዎች በመተካት እና በግል የሚሠራውን የስነጥበብ ውጤት ህዝብ ወደሚሳተፍበት በመቀየር፣ ዳርዮስ የስነጥበብ ሥራው ለብዙ ተመልካች እንዲደርስ እየጣረ ነው፡፡ እንደዚህ ያሉ እንቅስቃሴዎች፣ በእሱ እምነት፣ እስካሁን ዋጋ እና ክብር አጥቶ ላለው የኢትዮጵያ ስነጥበብ ሕዝቡ ያለውን አድናቆት መቀየር የሚያስችሉ ታላቅ አቅሞች ናቸው፡፡ ኩሩቤል መልኬ፣ ጓደኛው እና በጨርቃጨርቅ ስነጥበብ የተካነው ሌላው አርቲስት፣ እስካሁን ስያሜ ላልተሰጠው የአርት ሥራ በዕውቀቱ፣ በክህሎቱ፣ በዓይኖቹ እና ግልፅ በሆነው በእጆቹ የራሱን አስተዋፅዖ ያዋጣል፡፡

THE PROGRAMME

During this year’s Tibeb Be Adebabay, Dariwos Hailemichael and Kirubel Melke have planned to install a canvas in public space,

inviting the public of Addis Abeba to participate with trac-ing, printing, or collaging their hand palms using prepared or brought materials. The aim is to create something har-monious and a single piece together, offering a different kind of depiction of who we are sharing our time and space with while learning the basic elements of art. Like a fingerprint each hand palm is individual and unique – just as every human being. But other than a single finger, it is our hands that can create, carry weight,

give blessings, signal kind or harsh gestures, feed us, or simply hold hands. Also, hands naturally come in

pairs, implying a certain level of dependency on a helping hand, both metaphorically and literally. As we put our

hands together in Dariwos’s and Kirubel’s work, it becomes clear, each individual is also the product of a community and, palm by palm, a feeling of belongingness and unity can be restored among those who might have felt detached.

THE CURATORS

Dariwos Hailemichael is an installation artist known for creating art by recycling plastic ob-

jects and other waste materials. When he roams the streets of Addis Abeba, he observes that Ethiopia has

taken up many foreign ideals as its standards. This is most visible in the buildings, cars, and smartphones that

surround us. But what about Ethiopian art? Do we show as much appreciation for the arts in Ethiopia as much as other parts of the world do? By substituting gallery spaces with public space and by replacing the solitary produc-

tion of art with public participation, Dariwos tries to expose his artwork to a larger audience. Such activ-

ities carry great potential to change the appreci-ation of art in the Ethiopian society as it is still, so he believes, generally being undervalued and underestimated. Kirubel Melke, a friend and fellow artist who has specialized in textile art, will be contributing to this thus far unnamed artwork with his knowledge, skill, eyes, and, obviously, hands.

ኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ፣ ጎዳና እና ስነጥበብ በጥቅሉ የሚታዩት እንደ ሁለት የተነጣጠሉ አካለት ሲሆን በአንድ አረፍተ ነገር ውስጥ አብረው የሚነሱትም ከስንት አንዴ ነው- ቢያንስ የአዲስ ስትሪት አርት (አስአ) አባላት ስለዚህ ጉዳይ የሚሰማቸው እንደዚህ ነው፡፡ ሆኖም የጎዳና ላይ ስነጥበብ፣ በበርካታ የውጭ ሀገራት፣ ላለፉት በርካታ አስርት ዓመታት በጥንካሬ ቆይቷል፡፡ በዋናነትም በዩናይትድ ስቴትስ ኦፍ አሜሪካ፣ በሂፕ-ሆፕ ባህል አማካይነት እየተዋወቀ ዝነኛ የሆነው ስነጥበብን በህዝባዊ ቦታዎች የመሥራት ሃሳብ “አንድ ነገር” ከሆነ ቆየት ብሏል፡፡ የኢትዮጵያ ጎዳና ላይ ስነጥበብ ግን ገና በጅምር ላይ ያለ ነው፤ የአዲስ ስትሪት አርት አባላት እንደ ባንክሲ ላሉ የጎዳና ላይ ስነጥበብ ኮከቦች ከፍተኛ አድናቆት ቢኖራቸውም፣ የራሳቸው አሻራ ያረፈበትን ዓለማቀፋዊ ግን ደግሞ የሐበሻም የሆነ የጎዳና ላይ ስነጥበብ ለመፍጠር ተነሳስተዋል፡፡ የአዲስ አበባ የተገነባ ከባቢ በተለዩ ኪነሕንፃዎች እና በበለጸገ ታሪካቸው የሚለይ ቢሆንም፣ ለአንዳንዶች ግን ዝብርቅርቁ እና ግራጫማነቱ ጎልቶ ሊሰማቸው ይችላል፡፡ የአዲስ ስትሪት አርት በቀለሞች፣ በቅርፆች፣ እና በስነጥበብ ክህሎት፣ በጎዳና ላይ አርት ለዓይን ለሚያስደስት ብቻ ሳይሆን ይልቁንም የጋራ የሆነ ትዝታ ለመፍጠር የሚሆንን አንዳች ነገር በመፍጠር ሂደት ውስጥ መሳተፍ ከሚፈልግ ከማንኛውም ሰው ጋር አብሮ ለመሥራት በሙከራ ላይ ነው፡፡ እያንዳንዱ ሰው ከአዲስ አበባ ጋር የሚያያይዘው የሆነ ምስል ቢኖረውም፣ የአስአ አባላት ግን አዲስ አበባ ለአዲስ መጤዎች ራሷን የምታስተዋውቀው እንዴት ነው ብለው ይጠይቃሉ፡፡

አዘጋጆቹ

ሰሎሞን ክፍሌ፣ የአዲስ ስትሪት አርት (ASA) ተባባሪ መስራች፣ በ2009 ከአለ የስነጥበባት እና ዲዛይን ትምህርት ቤት የተመረቀ ሲሆን፤ አሁን ዘርፈ ብዙ አርቲስት በመሆኑ፣ ሲያሻው ፎቶግራፈር፣ ሰዓሊ፣ ወይም ደግሞ የትርፍ ሰዓት ዲዛይነር ይሆናል፡፡ ሙያዎቹ ሁሉ እጅጉን እርስበርስ የተሳሰሩ ስለሆኑ ከአንዳቸው ወደሌላው በቀላሉ መዞር የሚችልበትን የአስተሳሰብ ዕድል እንደሰጡት ያምናል፣ እንዲያቀላቅላቸውም ጭምር፡፡ ስለዚህ ሥራዎቹ በሙሉ፣ እሱ ያዳረሳቸው የተለያዩ የስነጥበብ ዘርፎች አሻራዎች ያረፉባቸው ናቸው፡፡ ሰሎሞን በጎዳና ላይ ስነጥበብ፣ በተለይም በግራፊቲ እና በሚዩራል ላይ ያለው ፍላጎት፣ በውስጡ የተዘራው በውጭ ሀገር በርካታ ቁጥር ያላቸው የጎዳና ላይ አርቶችን አይቶ ከተደነቀ ጊዜ ጀምሮ ነው፡፡ እንዴት ታላቅ ማኅበራዊ ተፅዕኖ መፍጠር እንደሚችሉም ስላየም፣ ይህንኑ ዓይነት ነገር በአዲስ አበባ እና በመላዋ ኢትዮጵያም ማሰብ ጀምሯል፡፡

THE PROGRAMME

In Ethiopia, streets and art are generally perceived as two separate entities that are rarely said in one sentence - at least this is how Addis Street Art (ASA) feels about it. In many countries abroad, Street Art, however, has had a strong presence for many decades already. Particularly in the United States of America, pushed and made popular through hip-hop culture, the idea of art in public space has long become “a thing”. Ethiopian Street Art is yet in the making and while they reserve much admiration for street art superstars like Banksy, ASA is motivated to create their very own signature, producing street art that is international yet habesha at the same time. While Addis Abeba’s built environment is marked by a distinct architecture and a rich history, too often it seems to be overpowered by its surroundings that to some may appear disorderly and grey. With colours, shapes, and artistic skill, ASA attempts to intervene with street art along with whoever is interested to contribute in order to create something that is not only pleasing to the eye but also to the collective memory. Everyone connects certain images with Addis Abeba but how does Addis Abeba introduce itself to newcomers, the members of ASA wonder.

THE CURATORS

Solomon Kifle, co-founder of Addis Street Art (ASA), grad-uated from the Alle School of Fine Art and Design in 2017 and now works as a multidisciplinary artist, either as a photographer, painter, and/or freelance designer. He be-lieves that all of his disciplines are highly interrelated and allow him to escape a silo mentality, if one may say so, only in their mixture. All of his works, therefore, also carry the signature of the different artistic fields he roams in. Solomon’s interest in street art, particularly graffiti and murals, was seeded abroad where he was exposed to nu-merous works of street art that simply left him in awe. He also saw what great social impact they could create and began imagining something similar for Addis Abeba and Ethiopia as a whole.

THE PROGRAMME

As regular pedestrians on the streets, we are daily confronted by the congestion of people, cars and the general hustle and bustle that is characteristic of Addis Abeba. Amid the crowd-ed streets, which many of us are trying to get away from, Ankeboot Publishing House aims to draw people in by trans-forming their Suk into a space for respite. Imagine a place that is peaceful and quiet, one that offers good and unexpected conversations. Imagine a space that gives you the freedom to pause for a moment in your everyday routines. Now, also imagine how your thoughts begin to wander once you find yourself in this urban oasis. What to do with these thoughts? Ankeboot has a suggestion: put them on paper, create a book out of it, and closely listen to them before they turn silent again. Using the calmness of their Suk as a protective shield, Ankeboot gives visitors the chance to venture out on an ex-pedited and creative self-publishing journey. Within minutes, participants will have gone through the process of bookmak-ing that can otherwise take months, even years, to complete, while gently moving from storytelling and writing over to designing, printing, and binding. With their project Ankeboot particularly aims to encourage the production, circulation, and preservation of Ethiopian stories among Ethiopians from di-verse backgrounds. By the end of your visit, you will not only walk away with your very own self-made chapbook, including a digital copy and a screen print of your book cover, but also with a feeling of rest, accomplishment, and a sense of com-panionship by having shared a creative space with a person you would have not met otherwise and, certainly, had not ex-changed ideas and conversations with.

THE CURATORS

Ankeboot Publishing is an independent press based in Addis Abeba, publishing books that thread the line between art and literature. They perceive themselves as an instrument which extracts and spreads Ethiopian stories told by Ethiopians. Exploring “the book” as the epicenter for discussions, collec-tive and public readings, writing workshops, and exhibitions, Ankeboot organizes events that contribute to the Ethiopian literary archive and create evocative and enriching marginalia for present and future readers.

አንከቡት በአዲስ አበባ ውስጥ ያለ ነፃ አሳታሚ ሲሆን፤ በስነጥበብ እና በስነፅሑፍ ዙሪያ የሚያጠነጥኑ መጻሕፍትን ያሳትማል፡፡ አንከቡቶች ራሳቸውን የሚያዩት በኢትዮያውያን የተነገሩ ኢትዮጵያዊ ተረቶችን ቆፍሮ አውጥቶ እንደሚያሰራጭ መሳሪያ ነው፡፡ አንከቡቶች “መጽሐፉን” የውይይቶች፣ የጋራ እና የሕዝባዊ ንባቦች፣ የስነፅሑፍ አውደጥናቶች እና አውደ ርእዮች ማተኮሪያ አድርጎ በመዳሰስ፣ ለኢትዮጵያ ስነጽሑፍ ቅርስ አስተዋፅዖ ያላቸውን ዝግጅቶች ያስተባብራል፤ ለአሁን እና ለወደፊት አንባቢዎች ትውስታ ቀስቃሽ እና የሚያበለፅጉ የኅዳግ ማስታወሻዎችን ይፈጥራል፡፡

THE PROGRAMME

Addis Abeba is not only Ethiopia’s capital, it is a center in many terms. It is a center for political, economic and social change. It is the center of livelihoods to more than 4 million people. It is the center for inno-vation, creation, and ideas. As such, it rep-resents a very complex city within Ethiopia, within Africa, and within the world. With photography, the Center for Photography in Ethiopia (CPE) wishes to take a closer look at the different centers and layers Ad-dis Abeba has to offer. Through a series of personal and engaging photographic works, CPE addresses urban challenges, urban cul-ture and urban life and brings critical issues to the forefront. What drives their work is that people from all walks of life inhabit this city, therefore, an agglomeration of stories and understandings must be out there, only waiting to be told. CPE’s photographers and artists articulate what, why and how this city adds to, subtracts from, multiplies, or divides aspects of their lives and pair it with the stories they have gathered. Their outcomes allow spectators to not only form their own equations but to also enter a wid-er public debate with regard to Addis Abeba as CPE is not only stirring but also guiding urban conversations.

በተከታታይ የተናጥል እና አሳታፊ የፎቶግራፍ ሥራዎቹ አማካይነት፣ ኢ.ፎ.ማ. የከተማ ችግሮችን፣ የከተማ ባህልን እና የከተማ ኑሮን በመዳሰስ፤ አሳሳቢ የሆኑ ጉዳዮችን ወደ አደባባይ ይዞ ወጥቷል፡፡ የሥራው መነሻ፡- በተለያየ የሕይወት ጎዳና ላይ ያሉ ሰዎች በዚህች ከተማ ኑሯቸውን እንደመመሥረታቸው፣ መነገርን ብቻ የሚጠብቁ ድብልቅልቅ ያሉ ታሪኮች እና አረዳዶች መኖር አለባቸው የሚል ነው፡፡ የኢ.ፎ.ማ. ፎቶግራፈሮች እና አርቲስቶች ይህቺ ከተማ በነዋሪዎቿ ሕይወት ላይ ምን፣ ለምን እና እንዴት እንደጨመረች፣ እንደቀነሰች፣ እንዳበዛች እና እንዳካፈለች በመግለፅ፣ ይህንኑም ከሰበሰቧቸው ታሪኮች ጋር አዛምደው አቅርበውታል፡፡ ውጤቶቻቸው ይህንን የሚያሰሉበትን ቀመር ለተመልካቾች ከማቀበል አልፎ፣ አዲስ አበባን በተመለከተ ሕዝባዊ ክርክርም መሐላቸው ያስነሳል፤ ምክንያቱም ኢ.ፎ.ማ. የከተማ ውይይቶችን የሚቀሰቅስ ብቻ ሳይሆን አቅጣጫ የሚያስይዝም ጭምር በመሆኑ ነው፡፡

THE CURATORS

The Center for Photography in Ethiopia (CPE) initiative, founded by Maheder Hail-eselassie, is a learning and discussion plat-form for Ethiopian photographers. For the past two Tibeb be Adebabay editions, CPE has sharpened the public eye for photogra-phy. Previously, they have created a pop-up studio, allowing passersby to take sponta-neous portraits. This year, Maheder and a group of four Ethiopian photographers got together to develop a conversation of works around the city, to talk to the public, to interview people, and to explore what it actually means to live in this city. Through their work, passersby can explore what the city means to the individual as well as a whole.

በማህደር ኃይለ ሥላሴ የተጀመረው እና የተመሠረተው የኢትዮጵያ ፎቶግራፍ ማዕከል (ኢ.ፎ.ማ.)፣ ለኢትዮጵያውያን ፎቶግራፈሮች የመማሪያ እና የመወያያ መድረክ ነው፡፡ ባለፉት ሁለት የጥበብ አደባባይ ፌስቲቫሎች፣ ኢ.ፎ.ማ. የህዝቡን አይን ለፎቶግራፍ የሰላ አድርጎታል፡፡ ቀደም ሲል ለህዝብ ክፍት የሆነ ስቱዲዮ ሠርቶ፣ አላፊ አግዳሚዎች ያላሰቡበትን ፎቶ እንዲነሱ አድርጓል፡፡ በዚህ ዓመት፣ የማህደር እና የስድስቱ ኢትዮጵያውያን ፎቶግራፈሮች ቡድን በከተማው ዙሪያ በሥራዎች መሐል ውይይት ለመፍጠር፣ ሕዝቡን ለማነጋገር፣ ሰዎችን ቃለመጠይቅ ለማድረግ፣ እና በዚህ ከተማ መኖር በእርግጥ ምን እንደሚመስል ለማወቅ ተሰባስበዋል፡፡ በሥራቸው አማካይነትም፣ አላፊ አግዳሚዎች ለግለሰብም ይሁን ለጋራ ከተማዋ ምን ማለት እንደሆነች መመርመር ይችላሉ፡፡

ኢትዮጵያ ከሙዚቃ ውጪ አትታሰብም፡፡ አዲስ አበባ ውስጥ ወደ የትኛውም ቦታ ብትሄዱ፣ ሙዚቃው አየሩን ሞልቶታል፤ ደግሞም በጆሯችን የሚያቃጭለው አብዛኛው የውጭ ሀገር ሙዚያ ሳይሆን ይልቁንም የኢትዮጵያ ሙዚቃ ነው፡፡ ከመንፈሳዊ መዝሙር የወንጌል ዝማሬዎች እስካልተወሳሰበው የኢትዮ-ጃዝ ቅንብር፣ እስከ ዘመናዊ ኤሌክትሮኒክ እና ሬጌ ሙዚቃዎች፤ ኢትዮጵያውያን በሙዚቃቸው እጅግ የሚኮሩ በመሆናቸው ዓለም ስለሙዚቃቸው ማወቁ አያስፈራቸውም፡፡ የገጠሩም የከተማውም ሙዚቀኞች የኢትዮጵያ የተለያዩ ክልሎች እና ዘመናት ወደ ፍፅምና ያደረሷቸውን የባህላዊ ሙዚቃ መሣሪያዎች ፣ ድምፆችና፣ እና ዜማዎች በልበ ሙሉነት፣ በተደጋጋሚ ሁሉንም ይጠቀማሉ፡፡ ብዙ ጊዜም፣ ከአዳዲስ ዘዬዎች፣ ድግግሞሾች እና ዘውጎች ጋር ይጣመራሉ፤ ሆኖም ሁሉንም የሚያመሳስላቸው ግን ኢትዮጵዊ መለያዎቻቸውን የማያጡ መሆናቸው ነው፡፡ እንዲህ ባለው ሰፊ እና የካበተ የሙዚቃ ታሪክ፣ የኢትዮጵያ የሙዚቃ ትምህርት እስካሁንም ድረስ እነዚህን በጨለማው ተጋርደው ያሉ በርካታ ባለተሰጥዖ ነፍሶችን ማሰባሰብ አለመቻሉ የሚገርም ነው፡፡ ጃዛምባዎች፣ በጥበብ በአደባባይ ላይ የራሳቸውን ለስላሳ እና ደማቅ የጃዝ ቅንብሮች በመጫወት ስለማይወሰኑ፣ ተሳታፊዎች ላይም ዓይናቸውን ስለሚጥሉ፤ ባለሙያዎች እና ዓለም ዓቀፍ ዕውቅና ያላቸው ሙዚቀኞች ለተሳታፊዎቹ የሆነን የሙዚቃ መሣሪያ፣ ዘፈን ወይም የሆነን ድምፅ እንዴት መጫወት እንዳለባቸው በሚያስተምሩባቸው አጫጭር የገለጻ ፕሮግራሞች አማካይነት ጥቂት ለውጥ ማምጣት ይችሉ ይሆናል፡፡ የጃዛምባ አፅንዖት የሚያርፈው የሙዚቃ ኃይል ላይ ሆኖ፣ መዚቃ የአንድን ሰው ውሎ እና የአንድን ቦታ አጠቃላይ ድባብ እንዴት መለወጥ እንደሚችል ማሳየቱ ላይ ነው፡፡

አዘጋጆቹ

የጃዛምባ የሙዚቃ ትምህርት ቤት እያደገ የመጣውን የወጣት ሙዚቀኞችን ጥራት ያለው የሙዚቃ ትምህርት ፍላጎት ለማሟላት፣ በ2000/1 ዓ.ም. በታዋቂ ኢትዮጵያዊያን ሙዚቀኞች አማካይነት ተመሠረተ፡፡ ስሙን ወደ ጃዛምባ ከመለወጡ በፊት የአፍሪካ ጃዝ ትምህርት ቤት ተብሎ ይጠራ ነበር፡፡ በ2008/9 ክለቡ እስኪቃጠል ድረስ ትምህርት ቤቱ ጣይቱ ሆቴል ውስጥ በነበረው በታሪካዊው ጃዛምባ ላውንጅ የገንዘብ ወጭው ይሸፈንለት ነበር፡፡ ይሄ ታላቅ እክል ቢያጋጥመውም፣ ጃዛምባ ትምህርት ቤት ከምሥረታው ጀምሮ በፍጥነት እያደገ፣ ከሌሎች የአፍሪካ አገሮች ሳይቀር ተማሪዎችን እየሳበ መጥቷል፡፡

THE PROGRAMME

Ethiopia without music is unimaginable. Wherever you go in Addis, music fills the air and it is not so much foreign but much more Ethiopian music that rings in our ears. From spiritual Mezzmur gospel songs over funky Ethio-Jazz pieces to modern electronic and reggae beats, Ethiopians take much pride in their music and are not afraid to let the world know about it. With confidence, musicians from both the countryside and the city frequently make use of the huge repertoire of traditional in-struments, sounds, and melodies that Ethiopia’s different regions and eras have managed to bring to perfection. And often they are paired with new styles, frequencies, and genres but what they keep in common is that they remain distinctly Ethiopian. With such an abundant and rich musical history, it is somewhat surprising how Ethiopia’s musical education has thus far been largely unable to gather the many talented souls that continue to stay in the shadow. Jazzamba might be able to make a small difference during Tibeb be Adebabay as they will not only be performing their smooth and lively jazz pieces but also putting the spotlight on the participants. With the help of brief pop-up workshops in which the professional and internationally renown musicians are teaching participants how to play

a particular instrument, a song, or a simple tune, Jazzamba puts em-phasis on the power of music and how it can transform somebody’s entire day and a place’s entire at-mosphere.

THE CURATORS

The Jazzamba School of Music was founded in 2008 by a group of the most prominent Ethiopian musi-cians in order to meet the growing demand by young musicians for quality music education. Originally called the African Jazz School of Music before changing its name to Jazzamba, it was financed through the now legendary Jazzamba Lounge, based in the Taitu Hotel, until the club tragically burnt down in 2015. Despite this major setback, the Jazzamba School of Music has grown steadily since its foundation and has also attracted students from other countries in the region.

ፍካት ሰርከስ አንድ ህልም አለው- ያንንም ህልሙን በዓመት አንዴ ጥበብ በአደባባይ እውን ያደርግለታል፡፡ እነሱ እንደሚሉት፣ በአዲስ አበባ ጎዳናዎች ላይ ትርኢታቸውን ማሳየት ከስንት አንዴ የሚያጋጥም ዕድል ነው፤ በፌስቲቫሉ ጊዜ ማድረግ የሚችሉት እና በትክክልም የሚያደርጉት ይህንኑ ነው፡፡ ከሁለተኛው ዓመት ጀምሮ የጥበብ በአደባባይ አካል በመሆናቸው፣ ፍካት ሰርከሶች ትርኢታቸውን ወደ አደባባይ ይዞ የመውጣትን ልዩ እድል ሙሉ በሙሉ በመጠቀም በእነርሱና በተመልካቾቻቸው መካከል ያለውን ርቀት ለማጥበብ ችለዋል፡፡ ለአስደናቂ ክዋኔዎቻቸው፣አፍ ለሚያስከፍቱ ትርኢቶቻቸው ፣ እና ለአስደማሚ ድርጊቶቻቸው የተዘጋጁ የሰርከስ መሥሪያ ዕቃዎቻቸውን ታጥቀው፣ የሚያሳዩዋቸው የፍካት ሰርከስ ትርዒት እንዲያው ዝም ተብሎ የሚታዩ (በቅናት የሚያደንቋቸውም) ብቻ አይደሉም፤ ይልቁንም ተመልካቾችም መሣሪያዎቹን ራሳቸው እንዲሞክሯቸው ዕድል ይሠጧቸዋል፡፡ ፍላጎቱ ያለው ማንኛውም ሰው በደስታ ዕውቀታቸውን እና ክህሎታቸውን በሚያካፍሉት የሰርከስ ባለሙያዎቹ መሪነት የመረጠውን የሰርከስ ጥበብ መማር እና ማሻሻል ይችላል፡፡ ማን እና እንዴት ዓይነት ተሰጥዖ ሊገለጥ እንደሚችል ማን ያውቃል? በዚህ መንገድ ኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ ያሉ የሰርከስ ጥበባት ግዙፍ ትኩረት ከማግኘታቸውም በላይ፣ የሰርከስ ትርዒት አቅርቦቶችን መኖር አለመኖር የሚወስኑት እክሎች ጎዳና ላይ ስለማይኖሩ፣ የጥበቡ ፍላጎት ያላቸው ያልተመረጡ ሰዎች ቁጥር በየጊዜው እየጨመረ ይመጣል፡፡

አዘጋጆቹ

ፍካት ሰርከስ የሰርከስ ጥበብ ጥልቅ ፍቅር ያሰባሰባቸውን 30 ወጣት እና ተሰጥዖ ያላቸው ኢትዮጵያዊያኖች ያቀፈ ነው፡፡ እርግጥ ነው፣ የሰርከስ ጥበብ ብያኔዎች የተለያዩ ከመሆናቸውም በላይ፣ ከቦታ ቦታ እንዲሁም ከጊዜ ጊዜ እየተለዋወጡ መሔዳቸውን ቀጥለዋል፡፡ ሰርከስ ሲባል ከአክሮባቲክስ ጀምሮ በሰለጠኑ እንስሳት እስከሚሠሩት አስደናቂ ትርዒቶች፣ እስከክላውኖች እና “የጉድ ትዕይንቶች” ተብለው እስከሚጠሩት ትርዒቶች ድረስ፣ እንደየሰዉ ገጠመኝ በርካታ ምስሎች እና የሰርከስ ዓይነቶች ወደ አእምሮ ሊመጡ ይችላሉ- ወይም ደግሞ ምንም ላይመጣም ይችላል፣ ምክንያቱም ሰርከስ እንደልዩ ዕድል ተደርጎም ይወስዳልና፡፡ በ1996/7 ከተፀነሰበት ጊዜ አንስቶ፣ ፍካት ሰርከስ በኢትዮጵያ እና በውጭ አገሮች ፕሮፌሽናል ትርኢቶችን በማሳየት፣ በአገር ውስጥም የሰርከስ ትምህርት ቤት ከፍቶ በማስተማር፣ አፍሪካዊ የሰርከስ ጥበባት ፌስቲቫልን በማዘጋጀት፣ እንዲሁም በክላውን ዶክተሮቻቸው አማካይነት በጥቁር አንበሳ የህፃናት ዋርድ “የፈገግታ መድኃኒትን” በማሰራጨት፣ የሰርከስ ጥበብ በተለይ ዛሬ በኢትዮጵያ ምን ምን እንደያዘ በጨረፍታ ያሳያል፡፡

THE PROGRAMME

Fekat Circus has one dream – and once a year Tibeb be Ade-babay makes it become a real-ity. Performing in the streets of Addis Abeba is rarely ever a possibility for them, as they say, but during the festival they can

and do exactly that. Having been part of Tibeb be Adebabay since its

second edition, Fekat Circus takes full advantage of the unique chance

to take their performances outside and to overcome the otherwise usual

physical distance between them and their audiences. Armed with circus equipment

that is ready to create spectacular routines, mouth-dropping stunts, and simply amazing ex-

periences, the performances of Fekat Circus cannot only be watched (and jealously admired) but the audi-

ences are also given the opportunity to test their equipment themselves. Anyone who is interested can learn and improve their

choice of circus art under the guidance of circus professionals who happily share their knowledge and skills. Who knows who and what talent might be revealed? This way, the circus arts in Ethiopia do not only gain greater attention but also an ever-increasing interested crowd that is non-selective as the usual barriers that grant or deny access to circuses do not exist on the street.

THE CURATORS

Fekat Circus (or Blossoming Circus in Amharic) encompasses a group of 30 young and talented Ethiopians who are united by a deep passion for circus art. Surely, definitions of circus art vary and continue to change from place to place and time to time. From acrobatics to tricks over trained animals to clowns and so-called “freak shows”, depending on one’s exposure many images and types of circuses may come to mind - or also none, since circuses can also be considered sites of privilege. Since its inception in 2004, Fekat Circus provides a glimpse at what circus art constitutes specifically in Ethiopia today by staging professional shows both in Ethiopia and abroad, running a local circus school, organizing an African Circus Arts Festival, and distributing “smile medicine” as clown doctors at the pediatric ward of the Black Lion Hospital in Addis Abeba.
