Raster GraphicsRaster Graphics are made up of Bitmaps, which are millions

of tiny pixels. Most pictures that are found on the web and photos you’ve import from your digital camera are raster graphics. They are made up of grid of pixels, also referred to as bitmaps. The larger the image, the more disk space the image file will take up.

It has 3 file types: JPEG, TIFF, PSD.

1 megapixel = 1,000,000 pixels and the higher amount of pixels, the moredata is takes up and the images also have a enhanced resolution.

Page 4: NEW Digital Graphics Proformer

Vector GraphicsVector Graphics are defined by a start and an end, which can be

points, squares, triangles, curves and angles. Vector graphics are created in graphics packages and consist of shapes called objects. It is easy to edit each object separately. And even if an object in a vector graphic is quite large, it doesn't need a lot of computer memory.

Vectors have 2 file types: AI, 3DS.

These files don’t lose the image quality when resized, either larger or smaller. They look better ondevices because of the higher resolution.

JPEGStands For Joint Photographic Expert Group

Used For Used on the internet, mainly on social networking sites and for sending pictures in general. Can be used on most electronic devices.

Advantage - You can send them to whoever, wherever, through email, phones and internet.- Small, compact files so they don’t take up much data- Quick to upload the file

Disadvantage - It loses the photo quality when opened, edited or saved numerous of times due to compression and recompression.

Page 6: NEW Digital Graphics Proformer

TIFFStands For Tagged Image File Format

Used For Saving multiple images to one single file. Popular with Graphic Designers.

Advantage -When opened, edited or saved, the images don’t lose the quality of the image.-Can be sent easily to other users- flexible format

Disadvantage - They are very large files, which means they would take up a lot of data on the system.

Page 7: NEW Digital Graphics Proformer

PSDStands For Photoshop Document

Used For Image Manipulation and editing, but only on Photoshop.

Advantage -They can be saved in layers, so you can change certain parts of the image.- They are used for front covers of magazines because of the layering technique.

Disadvantage - They are large files, and can be only used in Photoshop, so has to be changed to JPEG to be sent to users without Photoshop.

Page 8: NEW Digital Graphics Proformer

AIStands For Adobe Illustrator Art

Used For Logo creations.

Advantage -They can be scaled to various sizes, from business card to billboard, because of the vector graphics as they won’t lose quality or deteriorate.- The programme has very similar tools to Photoshop which makes it easy to use.

Disadvantage -Large files- Very time consuming- Small errors may become visible if image is enlarged too much

Page 9: NEW Digital Graphics Proformer

3DSStands For 3D Studio

Used For 3D modelling, animation, characters. Used in TV, Film and Video Games.

Advantage - Flexible format- Encourages interactivity with the programme - Used in large industries for saving files for their software projects

Disadvantage - Expensive, time consuming and very large files- There are a limited amount of programmes available

Evaluation

What did you like about your image?I like that it is very simple and easy to tell what it is. It looks very childlike and would be a great technique to use in a children’s product.

What would you improve if you did it again?I would try and find a different way to do the mouth and also add some more features on the gingerbread man such as a some clothes like a bow tie or a noes. I would also like to make the legs more rounded to make it look more realistic.

Evaluation

What did you like about your image?I like the small detailed highlights in his hair, under the chin and at the side of the nose. This gives it more of a 3D effect and feel to the actor being rotoscoped. Using the Colour Range tool it produced a good way in which I could add in the messy stubble without looking too much or fake.

What would you improve if you did it again? If I were to do this again I would try and make the eyes look more realist by using different colours on top of each other and adding some eyelashes.

EvaluationWhat did you like about your image?I like how a simple logo from a band with an image which is related to the band is effective, for example I used a photograph of the band and a theme that links with the Arctic Monkey’s band name/logo and clip masked it. Although you may feel using an image behind/within text may take the attention off the logo but it will still make the logo stand out. The second image I created I used a simple font, (Lucinda Grande) and changed the tracking for selected characters, this makes one particular word stand out more. I also changed the colour of the font and added a picture to make the quote more interesting and to experiment with different techniques. What would you improve if you did it again?I could improve it by making it have a border which would make the logo stand out a bit more. Or get an image which would show the bands faces more. With the bottom image I would also create a border and use more colours.

Evaluation

What did you like about your image? Its simple and gets quickly to the point. The open page represents the print industry in one quick image. While a simple bold text will get the point across fast.

What would you improve if you did it again?I would improve it by using colour so it would stand out a bit more and appeal to a gender or multi-gender it with the colours used. For example using gender neutral colours such as purple, orange, yellow or a mix of blue and red/pink. More colour will make it more appealing and if it was for a business or company choosing interesting colours would grab a larger audience because they would be interested in what you are advertising with your logo.

ProposalDimensions2400 by 3200 pixels

ContentMy t-shirt design is going to involve a black and white rotoscoped image of the lead singer of the Arctic Monkeys, Alex Turner. He will be stood face on and it will be a MCU shot, shooting from his shoulders up. Instead of being coloured in blocks of colour inside the image it will have lyrics from the Arctic Monkeys songs intergraded inside the image of their lead singer. The fonts will be the same as the logo or fonts used on all their album artwork. The black and white theme will connect with their newest album artwork, AM. Although I would put a transparency on the t-shirt design so people can make it personal to them. My second design will be a rotoscope of the bands silhouettes in black and white. It is very simple but effective. They will all be stood up and the image will be a long shot so you can see all the figures clearly. The logo will be placed at the top right of the t-shirt.

Export FormatPNG

Advantages; Compatible with Redbubble, can save using a transparency style.

Disadvantages; Large files

Proposal

DeadlineTuesday 1st October 2012

Day 1 Day 2 Day 3Start my first design, get pictures to rotoscope and the template. Start rotoscoping the image and logo on the template, see how my idea plans out.

I will finish my first design and make the shapes smoother, fill in the gaps and touch up. Then I will start my second design and find lyrics to do inside the silhouette.

Finish off my final design and smooth the outline of the silhouette. Get smaller lyrics and quotes to go inside the spaces to fill gaps. Finally upload both my ideas onto Redbubble.

Schedule

Audience

This product is gender neutral as being one of the largest indie bands the Arctic Monkeys are popular for both males and females. The t-shirt will represent the male gender in the colours; black and white. While the image of Alex Turner is more for the female gender. It will be aimed at an audience of 17-23.

Logo of the artist will be rotoscoped.

Use this outline image for his face

Font I will use (Copperplate Gothic Bold)

The fonts will all be different sizes to highlightspecific lyrics

Use the transparent layer so the colour comes through the text on different coloured T-shirts

Peer Evaluation

What are the strengths of the final image?• They both link in with each other and have been done really

professionally. You can easily tell who they are as they have been done really neatly, precise and look high quality. The text outlines the face really well on the second one so that all arctic monkeys fans would know who it is. The font is in different sizes which contrasts well and helps develop the face. I also like how they don’t have facial features as it makes them stand out and look different from other designs.

What could be developed if the image was repeated?• Maybe could of used different colours so that if someone wanted the T-shirt in black they could do so.

Page 28: NEW Digital Graphics Proformer

Peer Evaluation

What are the strengths of the final image?• I like how they have used block colours on this picture but still brings

detail to the image and you can recognise who they are still. The quote on the second image is still easy to read and clear. They are both linked to the same idea which is really good and they have both worked really well.

What could be developed if the image was repeated? • If the image was repeated, maybe they could use different skills to build up an image with a different range of skills.

Page 29: NEW Digital Graphics Proformer

Peer EvaluationWhat are the strengths of the final image?• Great use of blocked colours to outline the important details of the image, to

represent and show that person without the need of showing the detail of their faces

• Good use of words to fit around the shape of the face and body, using different sizes to let certain words standout

• Really like the first image as I can see each person individually even without the use of facial detail, great idea and works well.

What could be developed if the image was repeated? • Use a more detailed image of the person or do the detail of his face with the

words as it is a little simple, highlight the word arctic monkeys to let it show more where and who the person is.

• Both images are simple, use different skills to see how to make the more interesting, such as use of colour or detail.

T-Shirt Evaluation

Page 31: NEW Digital Graphics Proformer

Does your final product reflect your original intentions? One of my flat plans consisted of the Arctic Monkeys

stood as a band together in which I planned to rotoscope the whole silhouette so it looked like a shadow on the T-shirt. All my planning, including my flat plans and mind maps consist of the Arctic Monkeys and in my “digital flat plan 2” I carefully chose the image I was going to rotoscope and where to place the logo. I carried this on to my production of my final product and I kept the idea the same.

My other flat plan (Digital Flat Plan) I planned the text which I had carried on from the digital ideas. Here I also planned some of the lyrics in and some examples of other peoples work. My idea for my other product ended up slightly different with how I planned but I adjusted it to make it better.I did this by not filling in the features in his face with lyrics as the text was too blocked to create this effect. But other than that it reflects my original idea and intentions.

Page 32: NEW Digital Graphics Proformer

Is your product suitable for your audience?

In my proposal I wanted my product to be gender neutral. I used black and white for the typical dark, more male colours and the picture of Alex Turner for females. The image of the whole band together would

aspire the male population as men look up to the Arctic Monkeys as they don’t take life too seriously but produce great aspiring music to listen to. Many females would connect to the production image as Alex Turner, the main singer of the band is aspiring to be with, and as a male icon to look in for a partner.

A 17-23 age range was what I wrote in my proposal which I still think is suitable because in the product of Alex Turner created from the Arctic Monkeys song lyrics and titles there are a few words which could offend people such as “slag” etc. Therefore it is aimed ay mature age range.

The T-shirts are typical band T-shirts with the band, logo and name on the front. Although the lyrics on my product have been creatively placed in the features of Alex Turner which is unusual and not been done before therefore it has a larger suitable audience.

Page 33: NEW Digital Graphics Proformer

Rotoscope: I rotoscoped the final image I choose for my second product. Instead of choosing lots of different shades and creating details I rotoscoped the outline shape of the band and then filled it in black so it looked like a shadow on the T-shirt which I think worked effectively as it will go with any colour T-shirt (except black).

Polygon Lasso Tool: This is the tool I used to create the rotoscope images. I like the way it works but sometimes when you accidentally double click it will join your work up in the wrong place and you cannot undo back to the last point you were on.

Text: My first design of Alex Turner and the song/title lyrics creating his portrait was mainly based on text. I chose a certain font to run through the theme of the T-shirt and changed the boldness, size and setting the leading and tracking for selected characters.

What do you like/dislike about the techniques you have used?

Page 34: NEW Digital Graphics Proformer

• In the image of my product design I like the way in which the black creates a simple but effective theme. If its on the silhouette of the band or the black text inside the artist. Both create shadow and make the work stand out well.

• Using different sizes on the second image on the page creates a different uniformity in the image. It also stands out more well known songs or a certain word such as “down” which I placed lower down from the rest of the song lyric which I feel is effective as it gives a slight image to the text.

• The clear space in the face of the second image I feel is too clear. I tired to make the lyrics create his facial features but the text was too blocked and in the end I took away these features and it started to look better without them although it’s a bit too clear. Although in the first image on the page the clear faces and hands in their pockets looks really effective as it gives something else to the image and even Alex Turners face turned to the left can still be seen with the clear background.

What do you like/dislike about how your final product look?

Page 35: NEW Digital Graphics Proformer

Why did you include the content you used?

Text and Logos: I used a template to rotoscope over the top for the logo so I got the perfect angle for the name of the band as I couldn’t find the download for the font anywhere online. But this technique worked well and having the bands logo on the T-shirt made it have a theme and look like a professional band T-shirt bought on their own website. The text I used is used on the back of their album for the song names. It is a simple font but looks good in bold or not which gives it a bit of contrast. Images: The image I used for the rotoscopeing T-shirt I picked carefully as I wasn’t going to show any detail on the band members just there outlines. So I choose an image which which was a long shot, so it wasn’t too far away but it was close enough to see from the knees up and you get the whole body view so they can also be identified by the body positioning. Colours: I used a simple black throughout my products as it created a house style and the silhouettes can easily be identified. It also make the text stand out and it links to the indie band and their new album AM in which all the artwork for the album is black and white.

Page 36: NEW Digital Graphics Proformer

• I used the ideas of both these images which I found on Amazon (the blue coloured one) which is a canvas poster and the other on redbubble.com which is a product design from someone's T-shirt. Both these images inspired me to create an image of Alex Turner and use his own lyrics from bands songs to create his head shape. The image found on Amazon had been cleverly done to show all his facial features. Not only song lyrics have been used in this image but quotes from Alex Turner himself. This is how a smaller font has been used for that image. The other image I found used the names of the Arctic Monkeys songs and from this image I took using different font sizes to highlight certain words which I feel is effective and brings some image into text. The simple black text stands out and the bolder the font is makes the word or phrase stand out even more.

What style have you employed in your products?

Page 37: NEW Digital Graphics Proformer

Strengths and Weaknesses of Pre-Production:• I could get ideas from other peoples designs but develop them and integrate their

techniques into my product design.• Using mind maps they helped me develop my ideas for a bigger picture.• Can see what colours, fonts and images fit well together.• Even though looking at other peoples ideas it worries you that you cannot

compete with products already out there.

Strengths and Weaknesses of Planning:• I can adapt peoples ideas I have looked at into mine• I can use a T-shirt template to see what my own design will look like• Certain images may not look as good which they have been placed in Microsoft

Word than they would in Photoshop so you don’t get the whole feel of which your product will look like

What were the strengths and weaknesses of the pre-production and planning?

Page 38: NEW Digital Graphics Proformer

The analysis of each of my final print products commenting on the strengths, weaknesses and aspects I would do differently if I were to repeat the project.

The lyrics and song titles I feel is an effective way to make a simple image more exciting. It makes people look more at the T-shirt wanting to find that song lyric they know. It will create interest within friends and peers or even people walking past in the street.

It uses up the whole of the T-shirt space available. But next time I would like to include the space used in the middle of his face and create facial features using lyrics of Alex Turners own work.

It looks good on all other colours and not just white which creates variety for the audience.

A series of these T-shirts of different artists and their own lyrics taking over their facial features would make a great chain of prints, this is what I’d do if I had more time.

Page 39: NEW Digital Graphics Proformer

The analysis of each of my final print products commenting on the strengths, weaknesses and aspects I would do differently if I were to repeat the project.

I used an existing photograph of the band and rotoscoped over the top. By just rotoscoping the silhouettes of the artists I was able to create a mysterious look from within the band.

I like the way Alex Turner, the lead singing, is looking to the side. This creates a certain dynamic which we wouldn’t get if he was face on.

The print would fit on any other colour T-shirt but black therefore if I was to do it again I would produce the same image but do a choice of a black or white silhouette.

Simple features such as the hands I feel I could improve and make look realistic.

I used their own logo on the T-shirt so the audience knows who the silhouettes are if they are not big fans of the band.

Page 40: NEW Digital Graphics Proformer

Peer Feedback

• I am glad the blocked colours to outline the important detail was a strength as it was meant to be a shadow of the band, so blocked colours is what made it look like this.and they stated that they can see each individual person without facial detail.

Even though they liked simple detail in the first image they wanted more detail on the lyrics product and if I had more time and skills I would have tried to integrate lyrics into his facial features.

I agree with using more colour next time, but I believe for this design less is more.
