High above the NewHampshire roads, in theshadow of Canobee LakePark, two cranes and adozen men coupled big steelbeams into place.
Those huge steel beamsfor the bridge were set by S& W Construction, a steelerecting company inConcord, N.H., and lifted upby cranes supplied by AstroCrane Company of Stow,Mass., subcontractors work-ing under the guidance ofMiddlesex Corporation, theproject’s general contractor, based in Littleton, Mass.
The new bridge is part ofthe construction of a new I-93 northbound roadway inthe area of Exit 3 on the new highwayalignment. Middlesex is overseeingthe $25 million project, which isscheduled for completion by the endof September 2010.
Working Partners Mike Wright of Astro Crane is the
project manager for his company andthe crane operator on the Route 111bridge. It is his job to hoist the steelbeams for S & W to put in place. Thesecond operator on the job is StevePiso.
“It’s a big bridge going over Route111,” said Wright, who also is one ofthe sons of Astro Crane co-ownerMarty Wright. “I’ve been running acrane for 14 years now, and this is apretty interesting job.
“There is some big steel beingused,” he added. “It’s a good job for
us. We’ve kept two cranes on site, twoLiebherr cranes. They are all-terrain,truck-mounted, hydraulic cranes. Thetwo models are LTM 1160 and LTM1220. They are great to hoist steel. Each crane picks up one beam length. We hold them up while S & W con-nects them and puts in the splice, where the two beams connect, then, they put in all the bolts,” said Wright.
A total of 32 beams make up thebridge, the heaviest weighing 59,000lbs. (26,761 kg).
“The beams are 97 inches tall, justover 8 feet high,” said Wright. “Thelargest ones we did were 116 feetlong. The span, the total length of thebridge, is just under 400 feet.”
He added that working with S & Wis as smooth as the steel beams them-selves.

“S & W really know what they are doing. You have toknow a lot to bolt together those big beams. To get thediaphragms [connections between beams] all connected toget everything bolted up, you have to work well.”
The companies’ work schedule requires them to lift andsecure two beams per crane each night.
“The first 16 beams were on Route 111. That was fournights, probably 10 to 12 hours a night,” said Wright. “It waseight days total, two beams a night, an average of 10 hoursper day.”
Ambitious PlanningAccording to the New Hampshire Department of
Transportation (NHDOT), the 20-mi. (32 km) widening of I-93 between Exits 1 and 5, from the Massachusetts state lineto Manchester, N.H., may be its most ambitious road projectto date.
The overall goal is to make this busy highway corridorsafer and to improve traffic mobility.
NHDOT literature states that Interstate 93 is one of NewHampshire’s principal arterials and is critical to the econom-ic vitality of the state, region and local communities. Aftercarefully reviewing several alternatives and their environ-mental, social, economic and cultural impacts on the south-eastern New Hampshire region, NHDOT and the FederalHighway Administration (FHWA) moved forward to recon-struct and widen I-93 to safely and efficiently meet themobility needs of New Hampshire, now and in the future.
According to the NHDOT Web site, I-93 travels just over
131 mi. (211 km) in the Granite State; around two-thirds ofthe highway’s total distance.
Serving as the main interstate route in New Hampshire, itconnects the state capital, Concord, and its largest city,Manchester. Beyond Concord are the towns of Tilton,Plymouth, and Littleton.
I-93 enters New Hampshire at Salem, where the currentreconstruction of the Exit 1 ramps (leading to the Mall atRockingham Park) along with the reduction of the freewayfrom four northbound lanes to only two, tends to cause traf-fic backups.
The corridor remains only two lanes wide in each direc-tion for its first 18 mi. (29 km), until the split with Interstate293 and the junction with New Hampshire Route 101 add a
third lane back to the freeway. I-93 and New Hampshire Route 101 run concurrently for
about a mile before New Hampshire Route 101 heads direct-ly east as its own freeway, serving Portsmouth and theSeacoast region.

Mass. Business Shares ItsRecipe for Rental Success
Craig Sessions, owner of West CountyEquipment Rentals, said letting the machinedo the talking is half of his recipe for success.
“Securing high visibility parking spots forour machines, so people can see them, touchthem and get really tempted to rent them,”are key factors according to Sessions.
From the start, he put to work his conceptof using the machines as 3D billboards, parking them in a visible spot with clear“Rent Me” decals.
The other half, though, is a bit more diffi-cult.
“Give nothing but top-notch service,” heexplained.
Giving top-notch service means a few keythings to Sessions. One of them is beingopen seven days a week. Another is alwaysanswering the phone — after the fourth ring, all calls go directly to Session’s cell phone. And the list goes on to include, for example, taking the time to really listen to people andunderstand what they are trying to achieve, not just rushing to close the deal by rentingthem whatever they think they should rent.
“I do whatever it takes to get the rental,”he said, explaining that itmay take him two hours toextract from somebodyenough information tounderstand that what theyreally should be renting wasnot the piece of equipmentthey were inquiring about, but a different one.
Selling or trading any-thing with more than 2,000hours, and washing andgreasing every piece ofequipment when it’sreturned also is part of it,according to Sessions, soWest County rental cus-tomers only get “shiny, new-looking machines.”
Besides the fact that aclean piece of equipmentsays “rent me” in a loudervoice than a shabby, dirtylooking one, there’s anotheradvantage to being fanaticalabout renting only like-new,shiny machines, accordingto Sessions.
“They respect it,” heexplained, adding that cus-tomers take much better careof a well maintained piece ofequipment.
West County also doesn’tbelieve in raising its prices
unnecessarily and works to be fair on itsdelivery charges, and to deliver in a timelyfashion.
“We charge the same now that we used tocharge in 2005,” said Sessions, adding,“Why would I increase the rates if it’s work-ing well for everyone?”
Donnie Rowell gives a Cat mini-excava-tor a top-to-bottom cleaning.
(L-R): Three generations of the Sessions family —Norman, Tyler and Craig — are the driving forcebehind West County Equipment Rentals.
More than 125 attachments enable West County to meetjust about any job, regardless of the time of year.

Bay State Rental Firm Let’sIts Iron Do the Talking
According to Sessions, the answer to the typical cus-tomer question, “When canyou guys deliver?” is simply,“When do you need it?” Theonly caveat? The neighbors.
“We always ask the cus-tomer about that, to makesure we don’t end up creat-ing trouble,” said Sessions, who added that his father hasbeen known to drop off amachine at a customer’s siteat 4 a.m. “to make sure itwas there with plenty oftime, because he said heneeded it at 6.”
And last but certainly notleast — at West County, top-notch service means top-notch maintenance. Thecompany does it all, in-house.
Standing in his wellequipped service area at theShelburne Falls location,Craig Sessions’s father,Norman, showed his toolsand explained how he puts towork his many years ofexperience and the same“outstanding service only”philosophy his son has sosuccessfully implementedacross the business.
“We don’t count the hourswe spend doing mainte-nance,” said Norman, “we just do whateverit takes.”
Craig’s son, Tyler, is learning the ropesand being trained to move seamlessly fromone job to another, supporting his father andhis grandfather, “doing whatever it takes.”
With 85 pieces of equipment, 125 attach-ments and counting, and four locations —Shelburne Falls, Palmer, Hadley and NorthAdams — there’s a good chance that nowa-days, West County has a solution for anychallenge.
In the BeginningCraig Sessions started his rental business
in 2005 with four machines he bought fromMilton CAT in Milford, Mass., after workingfor 20 years in his car and truck repair busi-ness.
“I was getting a little stir crazy and claus-trophobic,” he said in explaining the careerchange.
Working as a Caterpillar hose reseller at
the time, it was a conversation with his hoserepresentative, who put him in contact withthe Milton CAT rental manager, that set himon his current path.
These days, two new employees havejoined the Sessions family; one will work atthe Palmer, Mass., location and the other onewill assist with daily operations, includingmachine maintenance and deliveries. WestCounty Equipment Rental’s customer listshows a 50/50 ratio of homeowners versuscontractors and Sessions still believes timespent with a customer prior to actually clos-ing a deal is never wasted time.
West County Equipment has expanded itsproduct line to include compaction equip-ment, pumps, generators, concrete cutting, breaking and finishing equipment and land-scape equipment.
“We also offer a wide variety of contrac-tor’s supplies such as personal safety items, traffic control products, silt and safety fence, rain gear and hand tools,” added Tyler.
RENTALS from page 6
Norman Sessions relies upon his more than 40 yearsof equipment repair experience to keep the WestCounty fleet in top shape for the company’s customers.
The newest location, in Palmer, Mass., has a spaciousshowroom stocked with a complete line of hand toolsto meet the needs of the homeowners and contractorsin the area.
