independently owned and operated facilities and has animpressive resume. Its complete materials process includesdemolishing, crushing, processing, recycling, and transport-ing for rebuilding. This will help save landfill air space.Building something that can preserve the environment, is

nothing new for J.R. Vinagro Corp. With more than 150employees, they have been in operation for more than threegenerations. “It is a gorgeous building,” said Karen Hilton, project

coordinator of J.R. Vinagro Corporation. “There is nothinglike this that has ever been done here in Rhode Island. Weknow how to take this process to the next level. Providing avaluable service to the entire state can save a lot of materialfrom going into landfills, and help conserve space for munic-ipal refuse.”Conserving landfill space for J.R. Vinagro Corporation is

having all the resources and experience necessary to handleevery aspect of demolition. From facility decontamination,to onsite crushing, to offsite waste hauling, recycling, recla-mation, repurposing aggregate materials including naturalaggregate, concrete, gravel, sand and loam of various sizesand screens and disposal — they do it all.The company’s main office controls operations of 150

trucks daily, with a huge inventory of heavy construction anddemolition equipment, used on some of the highest profiledemolition projects in the region.“We have a complete operation, from A to Z,” said Alex

Correia of the operations and sales department. “At the end

of the day, we have an outlet for everything. Contractors canbring clean materials in, and we recycle them into variousgrades of aggregate materials. In our own operation, we cando everything. We can demolish buildings, break up thegrounds, transport the wood, glass, metal, stone, concrete, asphalt, etc. and haul all of the clean materials back here toour site for source segregation. We then can crush it, gradeit, and deliver it to end users.”J.R. Vinagro Corporation is a true success story. “They

started out as pig farmers 50 years ago,” said Correia. “Theywere in the garbage business to sustain their farm. Theylearned all the ins and outs of dealing with trash in their day,

and look what it has led to.” “We are one of the few companies who have actually been

able to grow, because of our diversity. Our many operationsare all at one site,” said Hilton. “We have recycled, and con-tinue to recycle and sort out every type of material generat-ed, not only from planned C&D projects and customers, butalso from those associated with an unplanned event. Someexamples are assisting with the storm debris created byHurricane Sandy in Westerly. We actually cleaned a beachfor the state by screening the sand and removing the debris. We’ve also assisted with harsh winter storms throughout thestate of Rhode Island.” The new recycling facility can help builders get the all-

important LEED building credit, a tool that is forging theway to so-called “green construction” and sustainable build-ing practices. J.R. Vinagro Corporation can help general contractors get

LEED credit that they may need for obtaining certificationfor their projects. An inspector goes through the load, andtracks the recyclables for LEED. The inspector completes abreakdown of the materials in order to meet the standards. It’s another solid benefit of the recycling facility according toHilton.Another benefit of the newly built recycling facility is the

ability to work indoors. To recycle during harsh RhodeIsland winters could be challenging. “Outside, doing this work in winter can slow you down,”

said Hilton. “The cold affects productivity of the workersoutdoors, just like the heat and humidity does in the summer. The weather and elements make it more difficult to workoutside in an efficient manner. By moving the operationsindoors, we have removed the obstacles which should leadto increased productivity. There is not one single piece ofmaterial that will be lost in the process. It has been com-pletely modernized. This is especially important when super-vising a demolition project with a quick turnaround. We havethe ability to demolish, remove mixed materials, and processthem back at our own facility.”In 2012, Jamie Rhodes, Rhode Island director of clean

water, said of the dump, “The central landfill is a nuisance. As a state, we need to reduce its negative impact while pre-serving its benefits. Diverting material from the landfillthrough recycling and composting reduces the public healththreat while preserving the life of this landfill. Let’s push forzero waste.” J.R. Vinagro Corporation has been recycling long before

Candigit Proves It Can Last: Company Celebrates 20 Years

By Jay AdamsCEG CORRESPONDENT

James Mello has come a long way from the days of dragracing as a teen out of the parking lot of Supreme’s IceCream.

The founder of Candigit Excavating Corp. and CandigitMaterials has a bulldog mascot on all of his trucks. It speaksto the doggedness, strength, tenacity and decades of hardwork. Mello, his wife Claire, his sons and his crew are cele-brating 20 years. The company’s success did not happenovernight.

“We started with one excavator, one dozer, one trailer andno truck to pull the trailer. We parked the trailer in my mom’sdriveway and hired a truck to move the equipment from onejob site to another,” said Mello. “The first excavator was pur-chased at an equipment auction in Florida.”

Mello ran into trouble with the second piece of equipmenthe purchased. The International Harvester TD15 dozer waspurchased from a local equipment dealer. Within two days ofrunning the machine, its engine failed, according to Mello. The seller would not warranty the machine, so Mello and hisbrother replaced the engine in the field atPepperwood Farms. They used headlightsfrom a pick-up truck at night so they couldcontinue working on the dozer

Fixing engines by truck headlights wasnothing new to the Mello family. It was whatyou did for your father’s tractors.

“My brother and I were born and raised ona farm. We were taught to run equipmentfrom an early age. I worked for a couple ofdifferent contractors as an operator andacquired additional dozer and equipmentexperience,” said Mello. “My brother Richieworked as an equipment operator locally aswell as in Texas and Florida. Yes, it was veryhard in the beginning. There were plans todecipher, materials to purchase, machines tomove, schedules to keep and figuring it outwas, at times, difficult.”

The rewards continue to build and includeacreage of land along a major commercialMass. highway that skirts the Rhode Islandstate line, and a strong local reputation, com-plete with a full array of services. These serv-

ices include land clearing, sewer connec-tions, water lines, fuel tank removal andinstallation, electrical trenches, road con-struction, foundation excavations, backfillprojects and septic systems.

“We are licensed [septic system] installersin Swansea, Seekonk, Rehoboth, Dighton,Dartmouth, Fall River, Mass. and RhodeIsland. Candigit Works on ProjectsUsing Available Materials

In addition, a full line of Techo-Blocpavers and walls, granite, flagstone, blue-stone pavers, stair treads and other materialsfor landscape design is available.

Candigit Excavating Corp. has used thematerials at its disposal to accomplish largeand small projects. The coffee-driven peopleof Swansea were glad to see their trucksalong Route 103 this summer as Candigitdug the foundation for a newly expandedDunkin’ Donuts Shop.

“I was so glad to see those trucks,” saidJames Dolan of Fall River. “That drive-through was a beast, traffic was alwayssnarled. They’ve dug it up; they [contractors]are building a new building. Candigit werein and out in two days. I see them all overSwansea. They do good work.”

“Word of mouth is our main source ofwork. We have an excellent reputation. Thatgoes a long way these days,” said Mello.

In addition to the Dunkin’ Donuts sub-contracted site work and installation of its

septic system in July, Candigit installed sep-tic systems in Dighton last month. Otherlarge projects, include site work for WilburWoods - Regent Court, Reservoir Avenueand Purchase Street in Swansea. These proj-ects included land clearing, road develop-ment and installation of underground utilitiesand drainage as well as all phases of individ-ual house lots and septic systems.

Commercial Projects include a spetic sys-tem for the Eye Surgery Center, Bay StateVeterinary Clinic and the Swansea MotorInn, and site work at a 90-acre Solar Farm inSwansea.

Municipality work includes undergroundtank removal for the town of Dartmouth, sitework for the Melrose Cemetery in Brocktonand work on the Cove Street draining projectfor the town of Swansea and a 20,000 gallonunderground fuel storage tank replacementfor Diman Regional Vocational High Schoolin Fall River.

Candigit Diversifies During New Home,Construction Industry Crash of 2008 doing the site work at a soccer field andconcession stand in Westport, Mass.,replacing the septic and site work at theSwansea Health Care Facility onSwansea Mall Drive and replacing theseptic for another Dunkin’ Donuts inSeekonk, Mass.,” said Mello.

Candigit is a family operation andhas expanded generationally.

“We started out as me and my broth-er Richie. My wife Claire did the book-keeping using Dome Books on a part-time basis,” said Mello. “We havegrown into a multi-faceted business. My wife and son Jimmy work in theoffice and son Josh is an equipmentoperator. We have a fully stocked mate-rials yard, numerous pieces of heavyequipment and a fleet of trucks.”

Mello gives all of the credit for hissuccess to his crew. A few of thosecrew members happen to be his family.

“My son Josh runs machines anddoes site layouts for the excavation por-tion of the company and is currently

being groomed for bigger things. Ourstaff is like family. They all give 110percent. We would never have reachedthis level of success without them,”Mello said.

“Safety assurance is also credited. All our site workers hold OSHA 10cards. We take all precautions and wehave a great safety record to this date,”said Mello.

Diversification has become neces-sary. Since the new home and buildingindustry crashed in 2008, Candigit hassuffered the same challenges as manyother contractors.

“The past five years have beenincredibly difficult. We strive on pro-viding great customer service to ourprospective customers and do our bestto service homeowners. We’ve tried todiversify,” said Mello.

His wife Claire has a wall dedicatedfor thank-you cards for jobs well doneas Candigit passes its 20th anniversary.

Mello offered this advice to thosejust starting out in the industry.

“Start small. Don’t overwhelm your-self. Choose your clients carefully.Make sure you have a good cash flow,”Mello said. “Work within your means.Be prepared to work seven days aweek. No more than 40-hour workweeks if you are going to work foryourself.”

Additionally Mello stresses theimportance of giving back to the com-munity.

“We have donated machine time andre-graded the field for Swansea LittleLeague. We regularly donate mulchand materials to Swansea schools inpreparation for graduation ceremoniesand events,” said Mello. “We alsosponsored a local hockey team whenthey went to Lake Placid. They won agold medal. Then, the Mayor of FallRiver gave me a gold medal. It wasgreat!”

BOSTON (AP) Transportation authorities said the latestflaw discovered in Boston’s $15 billion Big Dig highwayproject is expected to cost $1 million to repair. Frank DePaola, the state’s highway administrator, said

concrete road surfaces in the Central Artery tunnels that weresupposed to last 30 years are failing in less than a decade, causing potholes and crumbling road surfaces that must berepaved. He told The Boston Globe the problem stems from a deci-

sion by the Bechtel/Parsons Brinckerhoff team that oversawBig Dig design and construction to pave the project with con-crete, more common in warmer climates, instead of tradi-tional New England asphalt. That surface concrete is nowseparating from the structural concrete slabs below it. DePaola said the problem is a surface issue, not a struc-

tural or safety matter.(This story also can be found on Construction Equipment

drawn interest from history buffs who sayit’s rare in at least two respects: It’s privatelyowned, while most of the estimated 750 cov-ered bridges around the country are inmunicipal or county control. It’s also of adesign developed by famed 19th-centuryNew Hampshire bridge builder PeterPaddleford. A team from the National Society for the

Preservation of Covered Bridges was due inLyndonville on Aug. 11 to evaluate the con-dition of the bridge and develop recommen-dations on whether and how it can be pre-served. The Elliotts have said they don’thave the money — estimated in the hun-dreds of thousands of dollars — to fix itthemselves. Officials from several state agencies said

the bridge and its problems were not in theirjurisdiction. The Agency of Transportation likely

wouldn’t step in unless the covered bridgefell into the Passumpsic and the river backedup and began threatening a state highwaybridge just upstream, said Shauna Clifford, aproject manager based in St. Johnsbury. The Agency of Natural Resources might

have to issue a permit for work in the streamto repair the bridge but wouldn’t initiate aproject to fix it, said Mike Kline, river pro-gram manager. And Mark Bosma, spokesman of the state

Division of Emergency Management andHomeland Security, said his agency wouldrespond in the event of flooding. “While we’re concerned about any sce-

nario that could potentially pose a threat topersonal property or safety, we haven’t beencontacted by anyone with a concern,’’ hesaid.

Thousands of Dollars Neededto Repair Historic Vt. Bridge

Custom Built Equipment Set to Increase Productivity it gained popularity. Recycling was simply amatter of economics, meaning you reuse andrepurpose portions of the mixed wastestream, and dispose of what you had to. Intoday’s emerging recycling culture, itbecomes much more complex. There arewaste ban materials that cannot go into land-fills, such as unprocessed wood, ABC, andmetals. Nowadays, there are “green” taxcredits for renewable energy plants, one ofwhich J.R. Vinagro Corporation has signedwith to be a major supplier of wood fuel seg-regated from its processing. In addition, J.R. Vinagro Corporation has

other commitments from project owners forLEED Certification. It is all about recyclingrates, and J.R. Vinagro Corporation providescost-effective solutions to benefit RhodeIsland, and beyond.Hilton said that J.R. Vinagro Corporation

is planning an official ribbon-cutting grandopening for the C&D Processing andRecycling Facility tentatively scheduled for

August. The hours of the new facility will be6 a.m. to 4 p.m. “I’m really excited about the opening of

our new facility which houses state of the artequipment,” said owner Joseph R. VinagroJr. “This custom-built equipment willincrease productivity and will recover morematerial from the waste stream. With thehelp of state and town officials we have beenable to achieve our goal. I’m proud to saythis facility will help reduce the currentamount of materials being land-filled today. The benefit and impact this facility will haveon the environment and recycling, far andabove outweighs the financial commit-ment.”The company’s main office is located at
