ACCIONA owns 2 specialised construction vessels, being the floating dock “Kugira”, the biggestin the world with a displacement of 15.000 t.
It length is 74 m long by 49 m beam. It has a capacity of building concrete caissons of 66x34x32 mfor several types of marine works (port terminals, docks and foundations) by sliding.

ACCIONA was the main contractor for the GBS Adriatic LNG terminal. This was a one concretestructure with a regasification capacity of more than 8.000 million annual m3, weighing in excessof 280,000 tons, that was wet towed and ballasted at a location several kilometers off the coast ofVenice (Italy) at more than 20 meters water depth.
The entire assembly did consisted on a unique design, incorporating high degree of technologyinnovations and advanced construction methods, for being built in a dry dock at Algeciras Bay(Spain).

• Which floating solution is the most promising today and why? Will it be tomorrow? Can we answer these questions?
• What is the trend of the industry? Increase in size of WTGs, far away, bigger farms.
• How does the boundary conditions affect to the Design of Foundations and weight/cost?
• Which are the restrictions? Vessels? Crane capacity in Vessels?
• Is cost a major issue? Is risk accounted?
• Will floating foundations be used twice? “2nd Used”
• Will floating be a solution? In which range of water depth?
• .....?

EOLIA
EOLIA mission was to develop technology in order to be able to have feasible offshore windprojects in deep waters (> 40 meters). The project did not focus solely in energy technology, itwas a wide technology project that covers additional areas such as aquiculture, desalination andnaval technology.
The project was a Consortium of 16 Firms, lead by ACCIONA ENERGIA, with a total budget of 33,9MM€ and funded by CDTI with 16,7 MM€.
EOLIA comprised the project partners, plus 25 RTOs and 7 additional firms all subcontracted bythe project partners. The project term is 4 years from 2007 till 2010.

EOLIA
The ultimate goal is to lower Cost of Energy (€/MWh)
EOLIA looks to all stages as a single picture, understanding where higher cost reduction possibilities are.
As a single picture new innovative paths can be follow in order to achieve those cost reductions.
• Reliability and Availability are KEY.
• Weight reduction per MW installed.
• Simplify site selection processes.
Some targets to support the road towards the ultimate goal in case of floaters:
• New Foundations to be designed (Fixed and Floating).
• New specific Offshore Wind Turbines.
• New Design Codes and Simulation Tools.

¿How is Acciona within the international floating development?
• 3 different floating concepts have been studied coupled with moorings and with a 5MW
WTG at 200mts water depth at 1:40 Scale
• Design tools calibrated and new mooring internal tools developed.
• Knowledge has been acquired.
Acciona has been the unique organization, global wide that has evaluate and tested at Basin Scale (1:40) 3 different floating solutions/concepts.
Our conclusions: There is no optimal solution, as there are a variety of optionsdepending on the site and boundary conditions that need to be considered from the very beginning.
We see that Spain is capable to work in partnership and with similar understanding that other players in floating wind designs.
In fact we are doing so....
