TRAVEL CLUB NEWS Feb 28, 2014 From: Ed Reilly, Chairman ,Club New Horizons

Phone: 310 326-4710

Next month, in March, we are heading south to Palm

Springs to take in the “Palm Springs Follies.” This will be

our last trip to the Follies as this fun show closes in May.

The trip date is Friday, March 28. The cost is $95.00 with

38 or more folks and lunch will be on our own. The head-

liner at that time will be Darlene Love. Darlene started her

singing career by being a backup singer for Elvis Presley,

Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra and many more. As an ad-

junct to her impressive resume, Love became the decade’s

most sought after session singer working with some of the

era’s biggest stars. This trip was discussed at our February

meeting, and it was agreed that since lunch is on our own, I

will provide a list of places to eat in the immediate area.

Departure time is 8:30 AM and we should be home around

6 PM. The signup sheet is on the board. Won’t you join us

in saying farewell to the Follies?

In April, we have been planning a trip to Ventura County

for a special outing called “Have Trunk, Will Travel.” We

will have a fascinating day visiting the Exotic Animal

Training facility at Moorpark College. Called “America’s

Teaching Zoo,” the animals include everything from Mar-

mosets to an African lion, leopard geckos to alligators, and

camels to emus. The zoo is also home to a spotted hyena, a

bald eagle, a mountain lion, red foxes, a wide variety of

primates, birds, and many other exotic and endangered an-

imals. Our visit to the teaching zoo begins with a live ani-

mal show, followed by a guided tour of the facility. We

will then have lunch at the Elephant Bar in Simi Valley.

Our final stop of the day will be a guided tour of the Gar-

dens of the World in Thousand Oaks. This garden com-

memorates the various cultures of the world. Included are

Italian, French, Japanese and English gardens. This trip is

offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays and costs $69.00 with

38 or more. However, apparently this trip has limited

appeal. So far, since this trip has been on the board, we

only have 16 interested folk, far too few to fill a bus. Con-

sequently, I will probably have to cancel this month’s trip.

We will give it another week and if we don’t get a substan-

tially better turnout, we will not have a trip this month..

In May, the members at this month’s meeting said they

would like to make the first of two Laughlin getaway trips

this year, one in May and the other in November. Due to

hotel scheduling problems, the first excursion is slated for

Monday through Wednesday, May 5, 6 and 7. We will be

staying at the Riverside Resort Hotel and Casino. In addi-

tion to being perhaps one of the least expensive hotels on

the river, the hotel has full gambling action including Bin-

go, sports a movie theater and is close to the outlet center.

The cost for these three fun-filled days is $116 double and

$134 for a single with a number of free meals if we have a

full bus at 38 or more. This trip will be discussed at our

March meeting.

2013 Christmas Golf Tournament By Gene Aurand

Chairman, Golf Club

The Christmas Golf Tournament sponsored by the New Horizons Men's Golf Club was a great success. We had 39

golfers and a total of 45 at the luncheon after golf. There was a brief delay caused by a cold and windy rain shower. A

vast majority of the players completed their round and kept their team in contention for the team victory.

I want to thank all of the volunteers and especially the hole sponsors for making this the best Christmas Tournament

that we have had. The sponsors donated $50.00 each of which $30.00 went to funding part of the luncheon cost and

$20.00, that went into the blind draw raffle.

She also does private party catering. Mark Potochniak (310-650-4650) was our bartender. He also is a senior

construction manager, in addition to bartending.

This was my last tournament as the Tournament Director and I hope everyone enjoyed last year's golf tourna-

ments. The Golf Committee needs more volunteers to be involved in the golfing activities at New Horizons.

The Golf Committee meets on the first Wednesday of every month @ 7:00 PM in the Clubhouse lounge. Th e

Committee is open to all New Horizons residents.

My special thanks to Renee Chang, Steve Spolidero, Tom Kasterko and Janet Weber for their help in running

the tournaments.

Team pictures were taken prior to the tournament. If anyone is interested in obtaining a copy, please email me

@ [email protected] and I will forward a copy to you.

“HAVE-A-HEART TOURNAMENT” RESULTS

New Horizons Golf Club - Feb. 16, 2014 By Steve Spolidoro

The monthly golf tournament for February was a

great success. We had a good turn-out with over

thirty residents and guests showing up to try their

skills (and luck) on the New Horizons links. There

were a lot of good scores and a slew of people taking

prize money home with them. A nice lunch of tacos

and beer, wine and soft drinks was provided to the

golfers (and non-golfers alike) while the winners

were being determined and everybody was bragging

about how close they came to making all those putts,

what could’a, should’a been. Kudos to the winners

and a special shout out to Gene Aurand for the great

work he’s doing with the groundskeepers to get the

course back into great shape. Thanks to all the vol-

unteers who worked to make this tournament hap-

pen; and thanks to all the participants who made it

possible for New Horizons Golf Club to make a

generous donation to the Richstone Family Center

and the work they do to help alleviate some of the

pain caused by family violence. Thanks Everybody!
