LuAnn Lindskov, Timber Lake High School math and science teacher, has been selected as the 2014 South Dakota Teacher of the Year. The announcement was made during the Systems Change Conference in Chamberlain this fall. Lindskov, who lives in Isabel, is a National Board Certified Teacher. She is a member of Black Hills State University’s Quark Net, a group of South Dakota science teachers who study subatomic physics and network their students with physicists and students from around the world to collect and share cosmic radiation data. In summer 2011, she was selected for and attended Boot Camp in advanced particle physics research at the Fermi Lab National Laboratory near Chicago.

as 2014 South Dakota Teacher of the Year
“The caliber of candidates for this honor is second to none. I commend them all. I’m thrilled that LuAnn is being recognized for her holistic approach to education,” said South Dakota Secretary of Education Melody Schopp. “She’s connected and therefore keeps her students connected to the community, region, state, and country.” A panel of educators from across the state selected Lindskov from among five regional finalists.
As a recipient of the honor, Lindskov receives $9,000 in cash prizes and a $7,000 technology package to use in her classroom. Prize packages are made possible through the generosity of private businesses and organizations. In addition, Lindskov will represent South Dakota as a candidate for the 2014 National Teacher of the Year award which will be announced during a ceremony in Washington, D.C., in April, 2014.
Good Luck to LuAnn Lindskov as she represents South Dakota & ESA Region 5 in the 2014 National Teacher of the Year Ceremony!

ESA Region 5 high school students had an opportunity to explore a variety of
health career options during a Scrubs Camp hosted at the Faith Community
Center, Faith, SD on October 30th. Scrubs Camps are one-day learning
experiences conducted at ten locations throughout the state. Campers heard
from healthcare professionals who discussed what they do and how they got
into their chosen career field. They were able to participate in exciting
hands-on activities and receive personalized career guidance plans. Schools
invited to attend this camp were: Bison, Cheyenne-Eagle Butte, Dupree,
Faith, Harding County, and Lemmon. Area professionals who presented were
from Mobridge, Eagle Butte, Pierre, Isabel, and Faith.
Scrubs Camps are designed for 9th through 12th grade high school students
with an interest in the healthcare field. There is no charge to attend,
lunch is provided at the camp and students also receive a free SCRUBS shirt.
Parents are welcome to attend the camp with their participating student.
One of the most pressing issues facing the healthcare industry today is the
critical need for healthcare providers. This is especially true for South
Dakota. In the coming years, thousands of additional healthcare workers will
be needed in South Dakota. Scrubs Camps were designed to encourage students
in South Dakota to consider pursuing a career in healthcare.
The Scrubs Camps are made possible through the collaborative effort of the
South Dakota Department of Education Office of Curriculum, Career and
Technical Education and South Dakota Department of Health Office of Rural
Health. For more information visit www.scrubscamps.sd.gov or contact the
Department of Health at 605.773.3361.

As part of the New Teacher
Mentoring Class, participants get
to take part in a valuable job
shadowing opportunity with a
teacher of their choosing.
In the past, participants have
either stayed in their school to
observe another teacher who
instructs the same students as
them, or they have chosen to
observe a teacher in another
school or district. Teachers may
choose to observe for a single
class period or up to a full day.
Observations are recorded on a
prepared form to help structure
what observers might look for.
New Teacher Mentor, Holly

Students started off this semester
with learning how to use the hand
drawing tools, a scale, drawing
board, T-square, 45-90 triangle, and
30-60-90 triangle.
First, the students made a few 2D
and 3D drawings. From there they
moved into finding points in the 4
different quadrants off from a 2D
drawing.
Currently, the students are working
in the SolidWorks 3D drawing
program on the computers.

in Timber Lake has been very busy this fall semester. My 45 students have kept me on my toes. Our first project was to build a ticket booth for the Panthers football field. It was a small project but incorporated the skills that would be used in a larger building. Then the classes went into the deck building mode. We built 2 larger decks onto houses close to the school and are in the process of building a third smaller deck. We have several
inside projects to complete before the end of the semester. The students have been great and very eager to build, which makes teaching them enjoyable. I am always on the look-out for projects, so when my classroom comes to your school, have your lists ready!" -Joe Roshau CTE Building Trades Instructor

JOB OPPORTUNITY:
NWAS Welcomes New Staff by Director, Cris Owens: Northwest Area Schools had several new employees start in the 2013-2014 school year. These new staff members are a huge asset to our programs as they bring with them an array of professional expertise. Our Special Education Cooperative welcomes Courtney Wimmer as our School Psychologist. Courtney is a 2013 graduate of the University of Nebraska. She grew up n Mobridge and NWAS is pleased that she decided to move back to her roots and join our team. Courtney is currently working in seven districts in the northwest region; Harding County, Faith, Dupree, Bison, McIntosh, McLaughlin and Smee. Katie Helms, of Prairie City, joined our Special Education team in January 2013. She is working as a Special Education Paraprofessional while she is working on her Speech Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) degree through Mitchell Technical Institute’s online program. Katie is planning on finishing her degree in 2015 and is working for NWAS as an SLPA. Ina Boldt joined NWAS in 2012 as a part-time Birth – Three Service Coordinator. Ina now holds this position as a full time Coordinator for Perkins, Dewey, Ziebach, and Corson Counties. Working to identify our youngest children in need of support services is critical work and we are fortunate to have Ina on our team. Vicky Waterland is a teacher who when faced with retirement decided that working part-time as an Early Childhood Paraprofessional would keep her connected with young children. Vicky is assisting our Early Childhood Teacher with children Birth to age 5 in Dupree and Faith. We are fortunate to have Vicky working with our team with such a rich background in education. Our Career and Technical Education Building Trades Program welcomes a new teacher who is a native to our region, Joe Roshau. Joe comes to us with a vast array of industry knowledge. As Director of NWAS I am grateful for all of our employees who make our organization strong. The entire staff of NWAS is highly dedicated and offer quality education services to the students and families in our area of South Dakota.
COMING SOON for SD-STARS include abbreviated training
sessions for navigating the portal including existing and
recent reports, as well as new report creation using
available source systems. We will be asking for district
feedback concerning the availability of more reports that
will be of interest to individual districts. District SD-
STARS and SAMS will be contacted when training dates are
planned.
Suggestions and requests from individual districts include:
o requested that aggregate reports for D-STEP and
attendance from 2004 to the present. This school wants to
track progress by groups of students in order to identify
trends of achievement and attendance or lack thereof.
o request for local assessment information be added to SD-
STARS like MAP, AIMSWeb, etc. in order to compare reading
and math scores among different forms of standardized
testing.
o requested the capacity to be able to track attendance
or define start and end date to analyze attendance on a
quarterly or monthly basis in order to track progress
toward attendance goals.
