A cross-section of residents in the neighbourhood of Ambattur is elated over
the news of the Greater Chennai Corporation proposing to lay new roads in interior streets. The inte-rior roads, as is the case in the many extended areas of the Great-er Chennai Corporation which were annexed to the civic body nearly a decade ago, are being re-laid after a few years.
“Ambattur is one of the ex-tended areas chosen for fresh roads in interior streets,” an official of the Ambattur Zone of the Greater Chennai Corporation confirmed. The official said that the civic body has floated tenders for relaying of roads in extended areas.
“Many streets in Ambattur neighbourhood figure among the nearly 2,6000 interior roads in the extended areas of Greater Chen-nai Corporation for relaying which tenders have been floated recently. The overall project cost for all the extended areas is about Rs 190 crore,” the official said.
While some of the smaller stretches of roads will be laid in concrete, the rest will get a fresh coat of bitumen and tar, according to the official. Once the tenders were finalised, work on relaying the roads could commence early next year.
Residents to whom Mogappair Mail spoke to said that this was a
good development. “Some of the streets in the Ambattur locality – both in the Industrial Estate area and in the Old Town are in a shambles and require urgent repair works. However, with the mon-soon season around it is good that the Greater Chennai Corporation would be finalising the tenders only later this year and commence road laying operations next year. Otherwise, if roads are laid now it could get washed away in the rains,” said ‘Ambattur’ Sekar, a long time resident of the neigh-bourhood.
Presently due to the battered roads in many places in Ambattur the area still has a suburban look though it is part of the Greater Chennai Corporation. Residents flagged another aspect too.
“Relaying of roads, especially the interior roads, is always wel-come. But the civic body must ensure that the quality is not compromised in any way. Roads that are to be laid must withstand wear and tear at least for two or three years, if not longer. The contractor must ensure this,” said a woman resident of Ambattur. She also had another concern. “The contractor must pave the roads properly before relaying them. Otherwise, if the road is laid on top of the existing surface without paving, it would raise the height of the road and the houses would go below the road level,” she pointed out.

Many motorists in the neighbour-h o o d s o f
Mogappair East, Mogap-pair West, Anna Nagar and Nolambur continue to violate the rule mandating wearing of helmets while riding on two-wheelers.
Acting on a diktat from the Madras High Court, the State Government had made it mandatory for those riding a two-wheeler including the pillion rider to wear helmets under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act (known in common parlance at the MV Act). However, de-
spite the rule being in vogue and penalties being imposed, as per provisions of the law, on those violat-ing the rule, it has become common to see motorists without helmets zipping past on the roads in the neighbourhood.
The violation of rule is not just confined to the interior streets of the neighbourhoods. Even on the busy main roads it is not uncommon to find those riding scooters not wearing helmets.
“Not that I do not want to wear a helmet, but I find it very stuffy and therefore I prefer to ride without one. However, I carry a
helmet with me, which I wear during long rides,” says Kaushik, a youngster.
A traffic policeman at the Collector Nagar junc-tion, who did not want to be quoted, says that most-ly it is the pillion riders
who do not wear the hel-met. “We do stop motor-ists at traffic intersections at regular intervals and pull them up for not wear-ing helmets. They often give vague reasons such as that they usually wear the
helmet but forgot to bring it along on that particular day. We impose penal-t ies. Sometimes when they come as
family, we let them off with a warning or advice them to wear a helmet,” he said.
Those l i ke Ar pan Singh, who hails from Delhi but has been resid-
ing in T S Krishna Nagar in Mogappair, wearing helmet is not just a matter of safety but also a habit. “In Delhi the enforcement is strict. I have now got used to wearing them ev-ery time I start my Bullet. But people must realise its importance as a safety gear. Only then will the helmet rule be effective,” he said.

Swimmers eager to hit the pool again
Having been inactive for more than six month due to the pandemic in-duced lockdown, swim-mers in the city are eager to take the plunge again.
Keeping in tune the central government’s or-der, swimming pools for sportspersons and club
members are set to open in the city from Oct 15. To start with the pools in Velachery, triplicane, She-noy Nagar, Che pe t , Mogappair and Chepauk will be reopened.
The Tamil Nadu Swim-ming association will fol-low the guidelines and
Standard Operating Pro-cedure regarding safety measures. Swimmers are asked to bring their own kit like kick-board, gog-gles, hand paddles, stretch cords, towels and drinking water bottles. There will also be thermal checks at regular intervals to ensure
that no infected personnel, including swimmers, coaches, officials among others do not enter.
The Tamil Nadu Swim-ming association has en-sured a method that swim-mers maintain physical distancing inside the pool. While the number of swimmers per lane will depend on the size of the pool, it will be limited to 100 swimmers per day inside the pool. Two swimmers cannot enter a lane together and need to maintain a distance of minimum five metres or use alternate lanes. It is advisable for one to take a hot shower on coming out of the pool.

Prior to the onset of northeast monsoon, Greater Chennai Cor-poration has planned to desilt 1,262km of stormwater drains in the city to ensure that the city’s roads are free from waterlogging. This is a periodic exercise carried out every year by the civic body. But this time the work has been
split into around 500 contracts with up to 10 package tenders be-ing floated in every division.
According to corporation sourc-es, the work involves desilting of 6,031 drains in the city. If the silt is not removed, excess rainwater would stagnate on the roads and lanes.

As per a press release by Greater Chen-nai Corporation on Friday, about 10 streets in the Kodambakkam, Valasara-vakkam, Alandur and Sholinganallur zones have been made containment zones. Corporation offi-cials are now carrying out regular Covid-19 contain-ment work.
An area is barricaded and declared a contain-ment zone when more
than five cases are report-ed. All the people are test-ed and are advised to be under home quarantine. Door-to-door surveillance workers help them for all their essential needs.
They are regularly monitored until the cases come down to below three. A month back, cor-poration removed con-ta inment zones and stopped barricading hous-es having Covid-19 posi-tive cases. However, the number of cases has been increasing in many areas where economic activity have started.

In a bid to help engi-neering aspirants who do not have internet access to participate in online coun-selling, the Directorate of Technical Educat ion (DoTE) has reopened all the students’ facilitation centres (SFC) across the State so that they could pay the fees and also fill their choice of course and col-
leges. The move came after candidates, especially rural students, faced several is-sues while uploading orig-inal certificates during the admission process due to poor internet access.
After receiving online applications from the stu-dents, the directorate had opened more than 50 SFCs across the State, including
six in Chennai, to verify original certificates before announcing merit list. But due to the pandemic situa-tion, students were in-structed not to go to facili-tation centre for certificate verification to ensure safe-ty. Instead, the original certificates that students uploaded were verified online for the first time.

A team has been put in place to in-spect and complain about homes that do not segregate. The system has al-ready started on Oct 1 in some areas. Sanitary workers have begun visiting streets riding battery-operated vehicles loaded with six 100 litre bins. Residents are asked to provide waste in a segre-gated manner in separate bins or bags.

According to a Corporation state-ment, between October 1 and De-cember 31, residents would not be allowed to book community halls. In the case of floods during monsoon, the corporation need to provide shel-
ter and food to affected residents. This is the reason to keep the halls free and unoccupied.

CMRL’s safety measures toprevent Covid spread
In a move to ensure the safety of passengers and prevent the spread of COVID, Chennai Metro Rail Limited has installed foot-operated buttons to water taps in all 190 restrooms at 32 Metro stations to encour-age contact-less use.
It said that CMRL has come up with an ingenious way to avoid or minimise hand contact with the eleva-tor buttons by providing foot-operated lift mechanism so as to reduce the virus spread and ensure the safety of the users.

Six arrested for land fraud in Mogappair
Six persons including three women were arrested for cheating a woman of Rs 15 lakh, offering a 640 sq ft land worth Rs 48 lakh in Mogappair using forged documents. Accord-ing to police, Rajeshwari (31) of Mogappair was offered a plot by two brokers. They intro-duced a woman, Rajam as the owner of the land and some others as her relatives, collected Rs 10 lakhs as advance and another Rs 5 lakhs. Later she went to the Ambattur registration office where she was told that the land docu-ments were fake. Four others were arrested which included three women.

Environmental friendly battery cars will be pressed into service in a few months for clearing gar-bage in the neighbourhood of Anna Nagar, if every-thing goes as per plan for the Greater Chennai Cor-poration.
The civic agency, which had already introduced battery operated three-wheelers in some areas including in Mogappair West, now plans to expand its usage. The Greater Chennai Corporation had last year introduced bat-tery powered vehicles for use by conservancy work-ers to keep the neighbour-hoods clean.
Now it has floated ten-ders to purchase nearly 1,700 battery operated cars for use in conservancy operations in four zones. "One among the four zones where these e-vehi-cles will be operated is the Anna Nagar zone. This will have several benefits for the civic agency not just in terms of cost but also in terms of reducing its carbon footprint," said an official of the Anna Nagar zone of the Greater Chennai Corporation.
The official, who re-quested not to be quoted for this report, said that the Greater Chennai Cor-poration had received positive feedback from various quarters about the 400-odd battery vehicles it

Chennai Corporation of-ficials, even the conser-vancy workers had given good feedback about the battery vehicles. "Some of our conservancy workers have come back to us and said that felt a sense of dignity operating these vehicles to collect garbage
from households. They felt that instead of the tri-cycles, this was way better. It gives them a sense of pride," an official said.
Besides, garbage collec-tion could be speeded up. " W h e n c o n s e r va n c y workers have to pedal the tricycle to go door to door for collecting garbage, a lot of time is consumed. The battery operated ve-hicles will cut down on the delay as they would be able to reach interior streets also quickly to col-lect the garbage," the offi-cial added.
