New Funding Opportunities

£10 Million Fund to Help Vulnerable People Claim Universal Credit (UK)

The Secretary of State has announced a new £10million Universal Credit Transition Fund. The fund will be available to organisations across the UK who are working to help vulnerable people, including the disabled, care leavers and those with mental health issues to claim Universal Credit as a route into work.

Current figures show that a fifth of claimant’s delay making a Universal Credit claim because they don’t know how to make a claim or think that they will find a job quickly. The fund aims to support innovative ideas that engage with vulnerable people early, helping them to make timely claims for the new benefit.

Applications will open in April 2020.

Funding for Teaching Internships (England)

Grants are available for school-led partnerships to design and provide teaching internships targeted at science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) undergraduate students.

The aim of the scheme is to let STEM undergraduates experience mathematics or physics teaching before they commit to it as a career.

Schools are invited to apply for funding to provide opportunities in summer 2020.

As part of the development of the programme, the Department for Education aims to improve the availability of internships across England. The DfE encourages applications to provide internships in geographic areas where there are gaps in provision, for example, the East of England and South West.

Applications from school partnerships covering wide geographical areas are also welcomed. To reduce duplication, schools in close proximity are encouraged to work together to submit an application with one lead school responsible for the administration and grant relationship with the DfE.

For the minimum cohort size of 10 interns, the grant funding would equate to £20,000.

The funding is for £500 per week for each student. Of this £500 per week:

£300 will be used to cover the intern’s expenses £200 will go directly to the school to cover co-ordination costs and overheads

Funding is for the 2020 cohort only.

Grants of Up to £25,000 Available for Projects working with Young People and Their Families (Scotland)

Registered charities in Scotland working with young children (under 3) and their parent/families, or with a parent/families expecting a baby can apply for grants of between £3,000 and £25,000 per year for projects lasting up to three years through the Cattanach Charitable Trust.

Projects working with families experiencing deprivation or in crisis will be given priority.

Grants may be for project funding, or for core funding including salaries and general running costs in smaller organisations. The Trustees prefer to fund revenue costs and a grant towards a capital project will usually only be associated with staff costs or some other aspect of revenue funding. The Trust prefers to make a grant which is a sizable contribution to a project and so is unlikely to make a small grant towards a very large project.

Previous projects supported include:

Home Start, Aberdeen, which received a grant of £10,000 from the Trust to support their core work of training and matching volunteers with families with at least one child under 5.

The SKY Project (Stuff for Youth and Kids) which received a grant of £7,873 towards the salary of a Children's Worker (especially the work with early primary school aged children) in a deprived area of Kilmarnock. Trustees meet four times a year to consider applications.

Applications can be submitted at any time.

Organisations that wish to make an application must first register on the Cattanach Charitable Trust website, with the charity number of their organisation.

Funding for Urgent Building Projects in Small Theatres (London)

The Theatres Trust has announced that the next application deadline for its Small Grants Scheme is noon on the 13th January 2020.

Grants of up to £5,000 are available to small theatres in London for small capital building projects that address urgent building repairs, improve operational viability, introduce environmental improvements, and enhance physical accessibility. The scheme can also be used to help lever in other sources of investment, particularly philanthropic support.

Applications for technical equipment and refurbishment of soft furnishings are a low priority for the Scheme.

In reviewing applications Trustees take into account a project’s urgency, other resources available to the applicant and the extent to which the grant would make a significant difference to promoting the better protection of theatres. Funds are generally awarded where they are considered to have the most impact in realising an applicant’s capital project.

Previous projects supported include:

The Tricycle Theatre which received a grant of £5,000 to help install an accessible shower and WC in a backstage dressing room, which currently has no accessible provision. These works are part of a wider capital project to address the urgent renewal of the theatre, which has been put under considerable strain due to growing audiences and increasingly ambitious programming.

The Young Actors Theatre received a grant of £5,000 to help address phase one of a larger project that concentrates on urgent repairs to leaking roofs and refurbishment to basement toilets and dressing rooms needed to bring the building up to a basic standard.

Funding for Physical Activity Community Projects (London)

Not for profit organisations, informal groups and individuals can apply for grants of between £2,000 and £5,000 through the Stronger Communities Fund for activities that use sport and physical activity to bring Londoners from different backgrounds together and help isolated Londoners feel better connected in their communities.

The aim is to invest in projects which help to improve social integration across London by supporting projects which use sport and physical activity to work towards at least one of the following outcomes:

Build relationships between Londoners from different backgrounds i.e. projects which regularly bring different groups of people in the community together to help build relationships, reduce any negative stereotyping between these groups, and increase trust in communities.

Reduce isolation and loneliness i.e. utilise sport and physical activity as a tool to engage socially isolated groups. Of particular intertest are projects which build people's confidence and help them feel better supported in the community.

Funding for Community Cohesion Projects (UK)

The Allen Lane Foundation's Social Cohesion Programme, provides funding to support local communities in breaking down barriers and reduce tensions between different groups of people, and help to build a more cohesive and inclusive community. The aim of the funding is to:

Proactively work towards building better community cohesion and trust, and encouraging respect and understanding in the local area

Proactively promote the inclusion of marginalised groups and individuals in the life of the local community

Fund work which breaks down barriers and tensions in the local community thereby reducing feelings of division and “them and us”.

The Foundation is seeking applications from community-led grassroots groups and organisations which have a focus of work being at a very local/community level, which could be a housing estate or distinct community. The Foundation is particularly concerned about divisions in communities that occurred around the 2016 Referendum and subsequently.

Applications will be particularly encouraged from areas of high deprivation but not exclusively and the Foundation is keen to support communities in coming up with their own solutions to local issues of division. New initiatives, those that may have been tried before or are on-going, are considered as long as the work has lasting benefits for those people the projects are aimed at.

No minimum or maximum grant levels are published. In 2018, of the 153 grants awarded 112 were single grants with the remainder being for two or three years. The majority ranged from £750 to £15,000 with recipients including:

Shelley Over 60’s Club - £4,000 South Tyneside Prison Matters - £1,000 Manchester Refuge Support network - £9,935

Applications may be submitted at any time.
