The complete programme
The programme will last for three weeks and cover three interrelated courses:
Open-to-learning™ OTL™Growing Great Leaders™ GGL™First Time Leaders FTL
Open-to-Learning™ LeadershipA 9-day course that covers: • The analysis and evaluation of our leadership behaviour • Learning new, more effective practices for tackling tough issues • Building trust
Whilst most leaders think they can build trust, many struggle to do so in tough situations.
This training shows you:• Why it’s tough and how to be more effective• How to think and act in ways that transform frustration, blame and defensive reasoning into productive conversations• How to simultaneously build trust while tackling tough issues
Learn the theory and practice of Open-to-learning™ Leadership through videos, readings, coaching, scenarios and feedback that is focused on your own on-the-job situations.
Growing Great Leaders™The GGL™ curriculum is based on Robinson’s research on the links between leadership and student outcomes. It draws on this research and uses case examples, templates and activities to teach participants how to apply the material to their own contexts and then how to teach it to others.
• Student-centred Leadership: An Overview• Building Relational Trust• Establishing Goals and Expectations• Resourcing Strategically• Solving Complex Problems• Ensuring an Orderly and Safe Environment
First-Time Leaders This course will take new school leaders through their first 18 months. It will employ Robinson’s problem-solving approach through the OTL™ and GGL™ lenses to embed best leadership practice in new school leaders.
The programme will be co-constructed to suit the UK context, based on what has worked in New Zealand.
On completion of the courseThere is no guarantee all participants will pass all elements of the trainer course. Assessment at each stage is carried out by Robinson and her colleagues. Three levels of outcome are possible:• Ready to train• Ready to apprentice• Further research and reflection required in new school leaders

Outcomes
“Leadership is not about building trust so that the hard work of improvement can happen later. It is about tackling the work in ways
that build trust through learning and making progress together.”Viviane Robinson
The University of Auckland
Not ‘borrowed from business’
Robinson finds little evidence that leadership approaches derived from business work in education. Five-year plans, corporate culture, performance management and transformational leadership are less powerful than focusing on developing trust.
Pedagogical change
Time, resources and effort need to be spent on making the pedagogical changes. Research says that, on average, these will have considerably more impact.
Relational trust
Trust is needed to truly collaborate with teachers on the improvement of teaching and learning.
A quantitative approach
Research has been undertaken into finding out what works in leadership. When quantitative analysis is applied to the research evidence it becomes clear that leaders currently spend too much time making structural changes. These strategies have been found to have low impact.
What is different about NGL?
“I have been really engaged and really challenged to rethink
how I do things – and I am pleased to say that I feel like
I am making positive changes back at school.”
Juliet Dickinson, Te Kowhai SchoolGrowing Great Leaders™
“If we can think and be Open-to-learning™ then there
is real potential for people connecting, understanding
and navigating situations that in the past have caused
conflict or cause separation.”
Aroha Heaslip, Consultant at Evaluation Associates
Open-to-learning™
Student–focused
What works in leadership is what works for the students. The key question is whether social or academic outcomes have improved?
Exclusive to Osiris Educational
The New Generation Leadership programme is uniquely licensed in the
UK to Osiris Educational. Training will take place in New Zealand at The University of Auckland Centre
for Educational Leadership.

Behavioural change in the leader
Behavioural change in the leader is put at the centre of the training. Participants are taught how to analyse and evaluate their own leadership practice, through coaching, mentoring and reflection. Only then do they attempt to make the desired cognitive and behavioural change.
The training is professionally challenging and some participants walk away as they are not ready to embrace change in themselves. They have to face their own behaviours. Only through this realisation can they begin to develop as a New Generation Educational Leader.
Just because someone is a good teacher or seems to have leadership potential does not mean they will pass this course. Initial failure is an option for both trainers and trainees. The greater insights into leadership and their own practice that are gained from attending the course are valid outcomes.

NotesTestimonials
“Thank you for such a fulfilling, uplifting and rewarding course. It is by far the best course that I have attended and, unlike others, will have an impact on my practice.” Rob Griffiths, St Cuthberts College
“Thank you. It was such a great course. I got so many useful ideas to take back: How to run an effective meeting, have an agenda, keep everyone on task and summarise as you go. I like the idea of thinking of different ways to engage parents into the school.” Dale Hammond, Tirimoana School
“Thanks – I love coming to these days. I have been really engaged and really challenged to rethink how I do things – and I am pleased to say that I feel like I am making positive changes back at school. Thanks for the ideas and the guidance.“ Juliet Dickinson, Te Kowhai School
I really liked that I got to work with two other members of the SMT on this and can work to make some suggestions to the other members of the SMT. The tasks that we did related directly to what we are trying to achieve in our school – made it easy to stay focussed throughout the session – time really flew by and we feel really energised. Mark Mack, Elim School
“If we can think and be OTL™ then there is real potential for people connecting, understanding and navigating situations that in the past have caused conflict or caused separation.”Aroha Heaslip, Evaluation Associates
“Now I have an exceptional framework to apply to the most challenging conversations I encounter, which ensures that concerns are raised respectfully and co-constructed problem solving plans can be made to address the real issue at hand.” Fiona Hawes, Principal, Tauranga School
“Open-to-learning™ leadership to me means not prejudging or adopting a closed mindset to any situation or interaction. It means allowing myself to actually listen to the other person, to value what they bring to the table.”Nesan Govender, Ohinewai School
“I would love to be able to attend something like this every couple of years. You feel supported, empowered and part of a strong profession that makes you proud.”
“I think I am a better leader as a result – have a better understanding of educational leadership”
