Dr. W. F. Washington’s 2017 Founder’s Message for “The Case For The Cross” interrogatively inquired 1) What glimpses do we have of the Cross 2) What place does it hold in Old Testament Theology 3) What part did the Cross play in the Theology of the New Testament? Biblical scholarship suggests that the earliest glimpse that we have of the Cross occurs in the Old Testament Creation/Paradise of Eden context recorded in Genesis 2. “And out of the ground the Lord God caused to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food: the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Gen 2:9). This Edenic Tree of Life has been viewed symbolically as the first and oldest sign of the venerable Cross. God conveys that if Adam “put forth his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever” (Gen 3:22); validating and vouchsafing this Tree of Life as a “Life Giving Tree” that provides eternal life. The Serpent’s/Satan’s influence 1) deceived Eve and 2) exposed Adam’s weak go along to get along sentimentality (Gen 3:1-19, 1 Tim 2:13-14); causing them to transgress the will of God and lose access to the Tree of Life. The Mis-sion Critical Prophetic Word declares that the seed of the woman would bruise the head of the Serpent and the Serpent would bruise His heel (Gen 3:15) facili-tating the “Case for the Cross”; the Life Giving Tree of Christ’s death.
