ello everyone. Here we go again, it’s time to gear up for our 59th Annual Conference to be held on April 20th through 23rd at the Margate Resort in Laconia, NH.

This year’s conference promises to be one of the best. NHPPA has always been known as the “Association of Education,” and this year’s conference will again uphold that claim. Jim Carlen has lined up five speakers starting on Friday night 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, with Cate Scaglione and her program “The Art of Luxury & Building a Thriving Boudoir Photography Business.” On Sunday morning from 9:00 am to noon Emme Rigby presents “The Art of Fine Art,” and after lunch from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, Kaylee Greer will be presenting “The Secrets to Capturing the Best Dog Photos Ever.” And there’s more on Monday morning from 9:00 am to noon with Damien Strohmeyer presenting “Creating and Preserving a Career in Sports Photography.” And last but not least to close our conference will be Maria Moore with “The Senior Experience” from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Attendance is free to NHPPA members as part of your annual dues. Not a member of NHPPA? You can still attend any program for only $39.00 each and the fee can be applied to annual membership if you join at the conference.

But that’s not all that’s going on, there’s more! This year the Image Competition will be all day on Saturday. Allison McGrail has lined up her jury panel; Jeff Dachowski as Chair, Judges Nancy Green, Joan Genest, Mark Sweeney, Cathy Broderick, and Emme Rigby. Because there’s nothing more fun, you don’t want to miss “Club 79” held all day in the Blackstone Lounge while image competition takes place. You will be able to view and hear comments by the judges in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere, thanks to Ray Peeples and his crew who set up a monitor in the room.

Back by popular demand, Saturday night will be the “Pizza and Auction Party.” Maria and Erin O’Brien have been very busy gathering items for the auction. Please help them by donating items or ask any business that you do business with if they would donate an item or gift certificate. Bid high and bid often. As a reminder, every dollar received from the auction goes back to the membership in the form of yearly scholarships that are drawn at the June meeting.

The highlight of our conference is the “Awards Banquet,” and the theme Madonna Lovett Repeta has selected is “Steampunk.” So get ready for a fabulous award and dance evening with the one and only DJ extraordinaire, George Whitehouse. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Madonna Lovett Repeta, the NHPPA Board, and all committee members and volunteers that make this association the best around.

NHPPA PurposeThe New Hampshire Professional Photographers Association (NHPPA) is a non-profit association of professional photographers and other interested persons who are dedicated to photography as an art, business, and science. The purpose of the NHPPA is to raise the standard of professionalism among its members through group and individual participation in activities and through the exchange of knowledge.

NHPPA Dues StructureAdopted September 2014

• Professional Member $125 Includes: Vendor, Active Photographer, Associate Member & Out of State

• Additional Member $80 (from same studio)

Code of EthicsEach member of the association will:

• Endeavor to maintain dignity in the presentation of photography and services as well as in the other forms of public contact.

• Observe the highest standards of honesty, avoiding the use of false, confusing, inaccurate and misleading terms, descriptions and claims.

• Endeavor to produce photographs of a quality equal or superior to the samples displayed, to apply one’s best efforts toward providing the best possible photographic services, and to play a personal part in raising the general standard of photographic craftsmanship.

• Have a sincere and friendly spirit of cooperation to fellow professional photographers and assist them whenever they are in need.

• Avoid the use of unfair competitive practices and the violation of Federal Anti-Trust laws and related statutes.

• Assist one’s fellow photographers by sharing knowledge with them and encouraging them individually and collectively to achieve and maintain the highest standards of quality in producing a photographic product or providing photographic services.

• Recognize the authority of this Association in all matters relating to the interpretation of this Code.

Membership fiscal year is June 1 to May 31 each year.

elcome to the New Hampshire Professional Photographers Association’s (NHPPA) 59th Annual Conference! On behalf of the NHPPA Board, it is my honor to welcome you to a weekend of great learning opportunities, image competition, catching up with

friends, making new friends, and last but not least attending the banquet and festivities that go along with it. For this year’s theme, I chose Steampunk. I wanted to choose something that we had never done before. I think it will be a really fun theme with lots of creative outfits.

The NHPPA Conference Committee members have worked diligently since last Spring to put together a phenomenal Conference. Their leader for everything pertaining to our Conference is Roland Lemire. Roland worked tirelessly to make sure that no detail was overlooked. Jim Carlen has done a terrific job putting together our speaker lineup that has something for everyone; providing us with a great variety of programs.

Our speaker lineup starts on Friday evening from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm with Cate Scaglione presenting her program, ”The Art of Luxury and Building a Thriving Boudoir Photography Business.” On Saturday, we will have our image competition and Club 79 starting at 9:00 am and running until all images have been judged. Remember, in order to earn credits or awards, you must enter image competition. I encourage everyone to enter. You only compete with yourself, and it is a great learning experience that helps each and every one of us improve our work. In Club 79, you get to watch the competition as well as talk about it with friends. If you prefer to watch it in silence in a room that has lighting just for the images, you may watch the competition in the image competition room with the jurors. Here, no one speaks except the jurors, the title reader and the jury chair. On Sunday morning, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, we have Emme Rigby presenting her program, “The Art of Fine Art.” Sunday afternoon, from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, we have Kaylee Greer presenting her program, “The Secrets to Capturing the Best Dog Photos Ever.” Our Monday programs have Damien Strohmeyer presenting his program,”Creativity & Preserving a Career in Sports Photography” from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, and Maria Moore presenting her program,”The Senior Experience” from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm. In addition, we will have our Hospitality Room open every evening. On Saturday, we will also have our Pizza Party dinner, image critiques available, and our annual live auction. On Sunday evening, we will have our group photo, followed by happy hour and then our annual banquet which includes presenting of awards, the swearing in of the new board, a DJ, dancing and lots of laughs and fun.

It has been an honor to serve as your 2017-2018 NHPPA President. The dedication and diligence of this Board is second to none. As I travel the country judging, I am often asked if it is true that we, as NHPPA members, really all like each other and have each other’s backs. I always proudly answer yes. NHPPA is known for this across the US, which I think is really awesome. I honestly look at our members as all being part of the NHPPA family. Not only is NHPPA a wonderful organization, we are so fortunate to have members who are all friends and help each other whenever needed. We always welcome guests and new members. I feel I must also mention that the caliber of photographers we have in NHPPA is amazing. I think that NHPPA is the best Affiliate in the country. The content of this class will be useful to both professional photographers looking to add pets to their repertoire for client services or also to pet owners who are simply hoping to take better images of their own cats and dogs (but mostly dogs!).

Damian Strohmeyer | Creating and Preserving a Career in Sports Photography | Monday, April 23 | 9:00-12:00 amFilled with tips, helpful observations, and entertaining stories this presentation applies to working profes-sionals, aspiring professionals and sports fans who appreciate the drama, emotion and beauty of sports. This presentation is not limited to those who work only as sports photographers! Damien has always identified as a photojournalist who happens to photograph sports. He think as visual artists we all share similar thought processes.

“Creating and Preserving a Career in Sports Photography” highlights a body of work that demonstrates a pho-tographic vision born of dogged hard work and countless attempts at bettering the craft of photography. The revolving theme throughout the presentation is not settling for mediocrity and pushing for the best effort that can be obtained with the assignment. Damien believes firmly that we all have talent and that the motivation to succeed will bring that talent to the forefront.

Maria Moore | The Senior Experience | Monday, April 23 | 1:30-4:30 pmIn this intensive and dynamic workshop, Maria Moore will share with you in-depth information onhow to build and maintain a successful senior program by focusing on the model seniorexperience. The lecture will include pricing overview and successes and failures of her ownprogram. She will also speak about how her classic studio portraits have differentiated her fromthe competition and have become a signature look for her senior sessions. Thereafter she willdemonstrate her studio posing flow and lighting diagrams and explain how she shoots with thesenior album in mind.

Jeff Dachowski, Jury Chair | m.Photog., CR., CPP, C.Ph. | daChoWSki PhotogRaPhY of BedfoRd, nh Since Jeff and his wife, Carolle, opened their studio in 2003, they have seen meteoric growth with a loyal following of children and family clients, a buzz in the wedding industry, and a growing number of commercial portrait clients. He has photographed events throughout North America, the Carribean and Europe. Jeff’s work has been in such publications as Seacoast Bride, New Hampshire Bride, Woman Engineer, Woman’s World and RollingStone. He has 13 images in PPAs Loan Collection and numerous other awards including Kodak Gallery, Lexjet Awards, Fuji Masterpiece, Polariod Prestige, Courts of Honor, Album of the Year, and an ASP Regional Medallion. He has been a PPA Elite member since the program started. Jeff is a member of PPA’s Board of Directors, a PPA International Approved Juror, Certification Judge, and a Vatican Approved Photographer. He is President of the Society of XXV. Jeff and Carole just finished writing two titles for Amherst Media; Lighting on Location and Profit Building for the Professional Photographer.

Cathy Broderick | m.Photog., CPP | Cathleen BRodeRiCk PhotogRaPhY of Whitman, maCathy is Past President of PPAM, a member of the PPA Council and past Print Competition Co-Chair. As a Master Photographer and CPP, she has received numerous awards including several IPC Loan and Showcase images, Courts of Honor, Highest Scoring Print, Sunset Print, Fuji Masterpiece Award and Highest Scoring Image by a CPP. She is a self proclaimed competition junkie and credits it for the process of growth in both her photography and her business.

Joan Genest | m.Photog., CR. | StoRYtelleRS PhotogRaPhY of noRth haVen, CtJoan has been a professional photographer for 37 years. She is currently the principal photographer for Storytellers Photography. The focus of her business is high school seniors, babies and children portraits, family portraiture and school photography. Joan is a PPA Approved Juror and a Jury Chairman. She has presented programs on children, families, seniors, marketing and selling photography across the US and Canada. She has served on the CTPPA and PPANE Boards and has been on several committees for PPA including PEC, BRE, and JRC. Joan serves as Secretary for the North Haven Education Foundation.

Nancy Green | m.Photog., CR., CPP | nanCY gReen PhotogRaPhY of CaRVeR, ma Nancy began her career assisting a wedding photographer in Hopewell Junction, NY, attended Rhode Island School of Photography, and upon graduation worked for Gainsboro Studio in Salem, MA. In 1979 she opened her own studio in Plymouth, MA specializing in portraits and wedding/event coverage. Over the years the studio made several moves because of the growth of her business and landed in nearby Carver in 2004. Nancy is an active member of PPA and PPAM, Past President of both PPANE and PPAM. She has been given many competition awards including Kodak Gallerys, Fuji Masterpieces, Courts of Honor and many more. She has been presented with the prestigious PPA National Award by both her home state Massachusetts (PPAM) and Vermont (VPP) and has been given “lifetime membership” in both MA and NH. She received her “PPA Affiliate Judge” designation in 2008. Her motto…”Never stop believing in yourself!”

emme rigby | m.aRtiSt | emme RigBY of SandY, ut Emme is an internationally award-winning Master Artist, including but not limited to having received the Canon Par Excellence award based on her illustrated artwork. Her university studies included both Fine Arts and Mechanical Engineering. Using the skills learned from these two unlikely subjects, both sides of Emme’s brain work simultaneously to create the intricate and detailed work that you see in her collections. Awards have also included Diamond and Platinum Photographer of the Year, numerous images scoring 100, Utah Artist of the Year, Fuji and Kodak awards for Imagemaking and SWPPA Grand Imaging, Best of Show and Master Artist of the Year, just in the last three years.

mark Sweeney | m. Photog., CR. | SWeeneY PhotogRaPhY of Clifton PaRk, nYMark’s Photographic career started in high school as a staff photographer for The Elkhart Truth and South Bend Tribune newspapers in Northern Indiana where he photographed sporting events, feature stories and spot news. After high school he attended Rhode Island School of Photography then worked for a few studios and labs in Massachusetts before starting his own business. For the past 20 years Mark has been in Clifton Park, NY photographing weddings, portraits and corporate events. Mark holds the Master of Photography and Photographic Craftsman Degrees from PPA. In 2015 he received PPA’s Imaging Excellence Award and in 2017 received a Top 10 Illustrative Grand Imaging Award. He is a recipient of Court of Honor Awards from PPANE, PPSNYS, PPAM, PPARI and multiple Photographer of the Year Awards from PPA. Mark is actively involved in PPA and is a past president of Capital-Champlain Section of PPSNYS.

The National Award, as provided by the Professional Photographers of America, is a special honor recognizing outstanding service to our industry. The choice of the recipient is determined wholly by the State or Regional Association. It may be given to any member or non-member of the Association, and is not restricted to those in the field of photography. The only restriction is that no individual may receive more than one National Award from the same association during their lifetime. The NHPPA National Award recipient is determined by the last five recipients, who receive input from all previous recipients, as well as the current Board members if needed, and while this award is available on an annual basis, it will be withheld if no suitable candidate is found.
