OCTOBER NEWSLETTER 2015
COMMANDER’S MESSAGE If you have been coming to the Legion you will
notice that we are trying a few more ideas.
We had two very successful Cans and Clams
nights. We plan on having them again starting in
the spring. We have expanded the menu and hours
of the kitchen on Sunday and will have two bar-
tenders to make your service faster. Come on out
and watch the football games with your
friends. There are other plans coming in the near
future.
I conducted my first membership meeting on
September 16th. I was very disappointed at the
turnout. We barely had a quorum and if we do not
have a quorum we cannot pass any business. It is
very important for our members to attend these
meetings. This is your legion! Do not sit at the bar
and complain about what is happening. Come to
the meetings and have your voice heard. The
meetings start at 7PM with refreshments at the
conclusion. I look forward to seeing more of you at
the next meeting on October 21st.
For the Good of the Legion,
Gary Fountain, Post Commander

and get acquainted. Please join us.

The bottle/can drive was a huge success. Thank
you to all who contributed and donated. Feed Our
Vets is such a great program that helps Veterans,
their spouses and children whose circumstances
have left them in a situation of hunger and also to
involve the public in fighting Veteran hunger.
There are two pantries, located in Utica and Wa-
tertown. Feed Our Vets Founder, Rich Synek, was
so pleased to see the trailer filled with bottles &
cans and two shelves filled with food. We seem to
grow bigger every year thanks to all the members
of our Legion. A special thank you to our Com-
mander for getting the Auxiliary a sign for the
event.
We had seven members volunteer for the Stars &
Stripes Walk that benefits the Sitrin Military Re-
hab Program held on Sept 12. We participated in
registration, walk and Color Guard. All these
hours will be recorded for our Community Service.
Also, the annual Wine Tasting Event proceeds go
towards the Auxiliary Team.
We have a full schedule the next couple of
months. Starting in October we are holding a His
& Her basket raffle. Ticket donations are $1/1,
$2/3 or $5/15. Tickets can be acquired Friday
nights in the Lounge and at the Tuesday night din-
ner at the bake sale.
Also coming up is a Holiday Seafood Sale in No-
vember. We will be taking orders for your Christ-
mas seafood needs. Orders will be placed in No-
vember with a pick up at the Legion one week be-
fore Christmas. More details to follow will be in
the next newsletter.
Ladies, our bake sales at the Tuesday night din-
ners are starting Oct 13th. We need bake goods to
make this a successful venture. Please drop off
your donations of bake goods between 3:30 and
5:00 upstairs.
Ladies, let us know of any Auxiliary Members
who are sick or in nursing homes. Please contact
Janice Keesler at 724-5693 with any information.

by Janice Hurley.
Over the past month we did Wakes and Funerals
for the Crouse, Baker and Waldron families. Our
sympathies are extended to their families.
Over the past month the Unit took part in honor-
ing the Post's WW II Veterans at the Post. This
was a great honor for us. We also participated at
the Sitrin's Veterans Run and Walk.
At this time we have given back to our commu-
nity over 700 hours of service while participating
in 40 events. As always we are very proud of this.
All of our events are under the direction of Capt.
Nelson Pohoreskey, Rd. Cdr. Larry Winfield, Lt.
Duane Clark and Ladies Capt. Barb Lints.
As always a special Thank You goes to the Girls
at the Bar who take care of us when we come back
from a function and the support we get from our
Legion and the Community.

MONTHLY HUMOR “AN IRISH TALE”
As only the Irish can tell a story!
Paddy had long heard the stories of an amazing
family tradition.
It seems that his father, grandfather and great-
grandfather had all been able to walk on water on
their 18th birthday.
On that special day, they'd each walked across
the lake to the pub on the far side for their first
legal drink.
So when Paddy's 18th birthday came around, he
and his pal Mick, took a boat out to the middle of
the lake,
Paddy stepped out of the boat ....and nearly
drowned! Mick just barely managed to pull him to
safety.
Furious and confused, Paddy went to see
his grandmother.
"Grandma," he asked, "Tis me 18th birthday,
so why can't I walk across the lake like me father,
his father and his father before him?"
Granny looked deeply into Paddy's, troubled
blue eyes and said, "Because ye father, ye grandfa-
ther and ye great-grandfather....were all born in
December, when the lake is frozen, and ye were
born in August, ya bloomin’ idiot!"
On Saturday August 22, 2015 a recognition din-
ner for the World War II Veterans of New Hart-
ford American Legion took place at our Post.
38 World War II Veterans were able to attend
and the evening was a resounding success.
All of our veterans received a welcoming salute
by our Post Color Guard as each one entered the
Post and were escorted to their tables.
A cocktail hour was followed by a Roast Turkey
Dinner with all the trimmings and a beautiful cake
was served for dessert.
During dinner our veterans were entertained by
the “New Horizon Quartet” whose members, Dave
Nicholson, Peter Blieberg, Rich Schlaegel, and
Rusty Rosen performed songs from the World
War II era.
The evenings program started with an introduc-
tion of invited guests by Post Commander Gary
Fountain and the presentation of Colors by our
Post Color Guard. The playing of our National An-
them was followed by the playing of the service
hymns of the US Military in which representatives
of each branch in uniform came out as each hymn
was played.
Commander Fountain gave his opening remarks
and welcomed everyone and introduced the speak-
ers for the evening.
Our Post Chaplain, Don Gossin gave the Invoca-
tion.
After remarks by the Chairman of the Board of
Directors, Terry Tesak and Past Commander,
Fred Williams, our main speaker, former news an-
chor of WKTV, Bill Worden gave a heartfelt trib-
ute to our Veterans and thanked them for their
service. Bill then made the presentation of gifts by
reading the name and branch of service of each
veteran present and a representative of their
branch of service placed their medallion around
their neck and rendered a hand salute. It was very
moving to say the least.
The following Veterans with their branch of ser-
vice were present:
US ARMY
Myron C. Allbright, John M. Buckley, Leonard A.
Dzlekowicz Sr., Joseph T. Hammond, Harold B.
Hanes, David F. Murphy, Reginald E. Rahn, John
F. Ruffrage, and Philip Schaeffer.

Richard J. Dunn, Frederick W. Dutcher, Raymond
J. Gardner, Henry (Jack) Irving, Earl A. Leach,

Potrzeba, John F. Pryor, and Edward Wojnas.
We have a total of 114 World War II Veterans
here at New Hartford and all of them will receive
their medallion as soon as we can get them to them.
After the Benediction by Chaplain Gossin, “God
Bless America” was played and then Colors were
retired to end the evening.
We wish to thank all of the committee members
who put in a lot of time and planning to make this
a great event.
We also want to thank Curtis 1000 for their do-
nation of the printing of the invitations that were
sent out to our veterans and to Speedy Awards for
their work in making the medallions.
We also thank our Post Caterer John Dooley
and his staff for the delicious dinner that was
served along with Diane Rolchigo for making the
beautiful cake, and our Post 1376 Color Guard.

THIS DATE IN MILITARY HISTORY On May 5, 1945, in the only fatal attack of its
kind during World War II, a Japanese balloon
bomb exploded on Gearhhart Mountain in Ore-
gon, killing Elsie Mitchell, the 26-year-old preg-
nant wife of a minister, and five children.
Also on this date Denmark and the Netherlands
were liberated as a German surrender went into
effect.
OBTAING DD-214 FORMS We have had several inquires about how to get a
copy of service records, namely the DD-214 form
(discharge papers) that is required when joining the
American Legion.
Below is one way to obtain a DD-214.
The DD-214 can now be requested online, but
ONLY BY: A military veteran, or next of kin of a
deceased, former member of the military. The next
of kin can be any of the following: surviving spouse
that has not remarried, father, mother, son, daugh-
ter, sister, or brother. Persons fitting one of these
two categories can request military records online
from the eVetRecs Website. Be sure to read all in-
structions before beginning the request process.
If you are not the veteran or next of kin, you must
complete the Standard Form 180 (SF 180). You
must then mail it or fax it to the appropriate ad-
dress on the form.
The Defense Department issues to each veteran a
DD-214, identifying the veteran's condition of dis-
charge - honorable, general, other than honorable,
dishonorable or bad conduct.
For complete instructions on how to apply for a
copy of your DD-214, see Veterans' Service Records
from the National Archives and Records Admini-
stration.
To apply for a copy of your DD-214, you will need
to submit a form SF-180 Request Pertaining to Mili-
tary Records, which you can download from: http://
www.archives.gov/research_room/obtain_copies/
standard_form_180.pdf
Be sure to download and complete BOTH SIDES
of the SF-180. The back of the form contains impor-
tant mailing addresses and instructions.
You will need the free Adobe Acrobat .pdf file
viewer to print the SF-180. Download Adobe Acro-
bat. The Standard Form 180 is formatted for legal
size paper (8.5" x 14"). Please print that way if your
printer can accommodate that. If your printer can
only print on letter size paper (8.5" x 11"), select
"shrink to fit" when the Adobe Acrobat Reader
"Print" dialog box appears.
