  • Does the King of glory find a welcome entry in your home and heart? Jesus went to Jerusalem knowing full well what awaited him - betrayal, rejection, and crucifixion. The people of Jerusalem, however, were ready to hail him as their Messianic King! Little did they know what it would cost this king to usher in his kingdom. Jesus enters Jerusalem in meekness and humility, as the Messianic King who offers victory and peace to his people. That victory and peace would be secured in the cross and resurrection which would soon take place at the time of Passover. The Passover was a meal shared in remembrance of Israel's liberation from slavery. Jesus was the new Moses who led his people through the sea of salvation, and freed them from slavery to sin. In the garden, Jesus became the new Adam by his faithful obedience to God's will. By his life and death he made possible a new relationship between sinful humanity and God. At the table of the New Covenant, Jesus was betrayed by Judas, one of his own disciples. Jesus died forgiving his enemies, and commended his soul into the hands of his loving Father. Jesus would "pass over" from life to death and to life again. Today we begin our celebration of the "Paschal Mystery." "Paschal" means "Passover." The "Paschal Mystery" is the mystery of sorrow and joy, of defeat and of victory. It is the strange paradox that we must deny ourselves if we are to find ourselves, that we must die in order to really live, that we must suffer in order to share in ultimate victory. Jesus said, "Unless a seed falls into the ground and dies, it shall not live." He said, "He who would save his life will lose it." He said, "He who humbles himself will be exalted." These and other paradoxical statements are expressions of the "Paschal Mystery." Jesus dedicates himself totally to the will of the Father. In doing this, he encounters suffering and death. Through his obedience and humility in his suffering and death, he gains the victory of the resurrection. It is the same with us: We must deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow him in every aspect of our lives, if we are to find real life. The time from Holy Thursday evening until the Easter Vigil should be a time of quiet and reflection with no games or parties or entertainments. Be sure to share in the liturgies of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday; do this even if you have done nothing else during Lent… Fr. Kris

  • HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING AT ST. CHRISTOPHER IN THE WEEK AHEAD:

“Notes” from Phil & Amy Jesus to Simon – “Once you have turned back,

you must strengthen your brothers” The Gospel from Luke 19: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Our First Reading from Isaiah 5: The Lord God is

my help, therefore I am not disgraced; I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame.” The Responsorial Psalm 22: My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? The second Reading from Phil. 2: Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. The Gospel Acclamation from Phil. 2: Christ became obedient to the point of death, even death on the cross. Because of this God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name. The Gospel from Luke 22: The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. We can ask ourselves today, does Jesus’ compassion call ourselves to compassion? Today Luke’s Gospel presents Jesus as the prophet of God’s compassion. Listen and participate in the Proclamation of the Passion today and better understand the evidence of this compassion during his passion. Simon’s betrayal, and Jesus still moving forward with him, in the garden at the arresting time and the high priest’s servant’s right ear being cut off and Jesus healing him (restoring, healing communication), on the way to Calvary, Jesus comforting the weeping women, and most of all Jesus on the cross embodying compassion in his prayer to God, “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.” Lastly Jesus responds on the cross to the thief on his right, who asks “Jesus, remember me, when you come into your kingdom” and Jesus’ response, “Today you will be with me in Paradise.” As I write this I realize as a music minister that we see many people on Passion (Palm) Sunday only to return on Easter. For whatever reason, many miss the liturgies of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Great Easter Vigil. Also, for whatever reason, many never have the time to be part of a church choir where you would sing of these songs of great compassion and unfathomable Love. Did you know that every one of these compassion moments of the Passion are titles of songs our Choirs have sung and studied over these many years. Maybe this is most noticeable in our past 2 cantatas “We Were There” and “Once Upon a Tree.” All I’m suggesting is that these are rather large chapters of the story of the Triduum and the Pascal Mystery. It’s actually the reason the church even offers the Proclamation of the Passion on this Sunday as well as Passion Performances; because many miss it on Good Friday. If you haven’t in the past come see “Who is this Crucified One.” Be a part of our Holiest of Days that all point toward the Resurrection and the reason for Sunday Mass. Take time to be a part of these faith-anchoring events that are historical but not re-enacted. What happens here is what passes over into the mystery of the assembly; liturgical, sacramental celebrations. Mystery, not history. A Blessed Holy Week to all, Phil & Amy

Sister Water Project – Lent 2016 Loving God, Thank you for the gift of water. We pray that each time we wash our hands, pour water in a glass or water the lawn, we will say a prayer of gratitude for clean water and be reminded to act and pray on behalf of those who live without it. We pray that each time we bless ourselves with holy water or see the baptismal font, we will be inspired to live out our baptismal call to follow Jesus’ example and uphold the dignity of others, especially those who live without clean water. We pray all this in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen The Christian life means following Jesus’ example (CCC, no. 1694). Jesus lived in a way that upheld the dignity of each human person, especially those who were suffering and outcast. Reflect this week on how water is a life-giving resource that many people around the world don’t have. Learn how expecting other people to live without access to clean water does not respect their God-given dignity. Pray the prayer above that we live out our baptismal call to life in Christ by following his example and upholding the dignity of others. World Water Day is March 22. Consider limiting your water usage as a family on that day *The goal is to collect $5,000.00 for Sister Water Project. *Please return all donations by April 10th. *Put your Sister Water Project donations in the Sister Water Project envelopes found in the pews. *Make your checks out to Sister Water Project. *Remember, 100% of your donations goes to building clean drinking water wells and systems in Honduras and Tanzania. These wells and water systems are built by and under the direction of the Dubuque Franciscans.

Are you looking for a good book to read or a CD to listen to. Well do not forget to check out the Kiosk in the vestibule in the back of church. There is a variety of books and CDs and other items you might like. Re-

member Easter is coming up and any one of these items would look very nice in someone special’s Easter basket. To the right is a picture of our 8th grade students taking inventory and restocking the shelves of the Kiosk.

Agriculture in the Classroom On March 2nd Cook County Bureau presenter, Toni DeLaurentis, visited Mrs. Nowak’s 4th grade classroom. She did an in school field trip which highlighted crops grown in Illinois and livestock that are raised in Illinois. The children played a grain game matching seeds to the name of the grain and a sequencing activity about Food production. (From farm to home) We also learned that researchers in agriculture made inventions and found discoveries while making our lives easier!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! Mrs. Roberson’s second grade class drew pictures of Dr. Suess Cat in the Hat to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday.

  • A FREE SPIRITUAL GIFT FOR A FRIEND, DEAR ONE, OR ANYONE

IN NEED! The fervent prayer of a righteous person is very powerful. (Js 5:16) Spiritual Prayer Gift Cards are now available in our adoration oratory chapel, free for your taking and use. They are small enough to be enclosed in any form of mailing such as a letter, note, greeting card, etc. They will of course also easily fit in one’s pocket or purse. The cards provide spaces for you to enter your name and that of the recipient. They specify that one hour of adoration has been offered for the recipient’s intentions. Note: The adoration hour does not need to be com-pleted in one visit. This would often be difficult and impractical. You may simply make enough shorter, separate visits, which added together total one hour. Silent Eucharistic exposition and adoration are normally available each day but Sunday, from 7:25AM to 8:25AM, in the oratory chapel behind our main altar.

    Meet Me In The Desert

Lord of Lent, Lord of Easter, As you went into the desert So do I follow Putting aside that which distracts me Grabs at me Falsely claims me. To search inside To confront myself My best, my worst My good works and my sins. And each time, I find you there To call to me again With works of challenge and words of mercy. And as I fall to my knees, in prayer, in fasting In sacrifice and penitence Somehow, you have it in yourself to reach out and gently lift me To renew me To claim me as nothing of this world can claim me. Meet me in the desert, Lord. Claim me anew. Amen
