As a result, the Blood Bank contacted both the Police and D9450 to see if we would extend the challenge until the end of next month. The Police agreed as have D9450 on behalf of the three Rotary districts. The other aim in extending the challenge was to see that blood and blood products are still available to the burns victims after the current rush to donate subsides, as it did after the Bali bombings. The Summer Blood Challenge will now be continuing until the end of March instead of concluding at the end of February. For more information on donating blood visit the Australian Red Cross Blood Service website at: www.donateblood.com.au , or call 13 14 95 to book an appointment. Just remember to say that you are from Rotary. Sommerville Theatre at UWA Mara and Marija are making plans for us to attend a Sunday evening viewing of a film at Sommerville. Tickets should be available once the time/date/ film have been decided. There will be the option of taking along a picnic and wine. More details on this fundraising evening should be available soon. Thanks to Jan Stewart making this opportunity available. Board Meeting This month’s Board Meeting will be held at the Collins' residence on Wednesday, 25th Feb at 5:30pm Meeting Time As of the last meeting, the club will now be meeting at 6:00pm to 7:00pm. The only exception to this will be the Charter Night on 5th March. Welcoming Officer Roster Thanks to Peter for setting up a roster for the ‘Welcoming Officer’ role. ARH - Health Research by Australians – for Australians – in Australia!

The concept of Australian Rotary Health is to raise donations and invest this money to provide grants for worthy research projects in the medical and health arenas.

It is anticipated that major projects may be funded by grants over several years to ensure continuity. Following discussions with a key figure in "Cot Death" research at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne, it was decided that after initial and major grants to "Cot Death" projects, Australian Rotary Health would support a wider concept of health research. There are many aspects of community health that urgently require research and Australian   Rotary Health was in a position to perform a valuable service to the community by sponsoring research into otherwise neglected areas. Likewise "Health", as envisaged   by Australian Rotary Health, should encompass a wider vision and include all aspects of community health. Our

intentions are to be a catalyst for projects that will improve the quality of life for those least able to assist themselves. It is also hoped that research projects will contain a strong element of applied research. Thus, it should be possible to demonstrate practical strategies for the enhancement of community health in a way that individual Rotary Clubs may apply in their own communities. The circle will then be complete - donations from Rotary Clubs funding research projects, the benefit of which can be applied back in the community that provided the initial gifts.

Message from the District GovernorDear Rotarians in District 9450.I have received calls and emails from many of you who wish to donate in the name of Rotary to assist in the response to the bushfires in Victoria.  To this end, the Rotary District 9450 Bushfire Disaster Response account has been set up and can be accessed by making a cheque to payee     “Rotary International 9450 District” and note on the cheque “Bushfire Disaster Response”.  Please ask your Club Treasurers to collect the total amount from your clubs and send just one cheque to Graham Spilcker.  This will assist him in the accounting. In the usual state of events, the District Governor is authorized to react in a disaster but given the seemingly increasing number of disasters I believe that we must begin to be proactive rather than reactive in these matters.   As I mentioned in my last email, I have asked Mrs.Jackie Bullock, Rotarian from Rotary Club Balcatta to take on a new role of Disaster Response Coordinator District 9450.   Rtn. Jackie comes from a very strong nursing background, is the

Director of Quality Service at Ramsays Hollywood Hospital, has experience in the British Army and in the Balcatta Club will work alongside PP Michael Reeves who coordinates our District Shelterbox programme.  I have known and respected Jackie for many years and fully support her in this new role as I know you will.Rtn. Jackie will send out an Expression of Interest to invite members to participate on a committee which hopefully will cover our big state.   The Committee’s brief will be to design a disaster response plan for District 9450, acknowledging that our role in Rotary will most likely always be non-immediate response.  The District Committee will be directly responsible to the DG and will act in concert with the DG at all times. The latest update on Shelterbox into Victoria, which I know that many of you have asked about, is below. We join as Rotarians in sending our thoughts, prayers and love to our colleagues, friends and family in Victoria as well as to those whom we don’t know. Yours in Rotary service,SueSue RowellDistrict Governor 2008-2009Rotary International District 9450

The Rotary FoundationWeek 33: Ever wonder how your Rotary club and district can make a positive impact for peace, right now?

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about how your club and district can support the Rotary Peace and Conflict Studies Program – a professional development program that is strengthening the leaders of today for peace. Beyond supporting the program financially, clubs and districts can actively recruit qualified applicants for each bi-annual program session. Each district can submit as many candidates for each program session as they deem qualified. As one alumnus recently put it, “The program has been nothing short of fantastic. I couldn’t ask for more.” Give Peace a fighting chance by opening the door for candidates in your District.

NEWS UPDATE

10 February 2009

The need exists … the need persists A project in Australia of the Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills

SHELTERBOX AND THE VICTORIAN FIRE DISASTER Victorian Government responds to ShelterBox Australia offer of aid The Department of Human Services today requested an initial deployment of 50 ShelterBoxes – 20 to Whittlesea and 30 to Kinglake. Arrangements are being made now and ShelterBox Response Team [SRT] members might assist with the deployments. The Department believes tents will be erected on community sports fields and on sites where homes once stood, and say that the multi-fuel stoves will also be of vital assistance. Many people want to be on their property, especially as there is some looting. After the deployment has been made, the Department will assess the need for more boxes – they are aware that we have immediate access to 200 in storage in Melbourne. We are sure that Rotarians in the affected areas will also be available to assist as the Department of Human Services guides the deployments. There are 173 people reported to have lost their lives in this tragedy – the greatest in Australia’s peace-time history. With more than 5,000 made homeless, ShelterBox Australia is pleased to be able to provide some assistance to our fellow Australians. Background to the ShelterBox Australia response

On Saturday evening – as the enormity of this tragedy was becoming known – Jenni Heenan, ShelterBox Australia General Manager contacted State MP Rob Hudson and Red Cross Australia and offered ShelterBox aid. The response this morning from Department of Human Services is a result of the contact by Jenni with Rob Hudson who conveyed our offer to State Government Ministers. There has not yet been a response from Red Cross. ShelterBox Australia has been and remains in contact with the Rotary District Governors in the affected areas who are monitoring the situation. Funding

The need for funding is always present but now the unthinkable has happened in our country. There is now an urgent need to replenish and increase our stocks. Donation details can be accessed at www.shelterboxaustralia.org.au A message from ShelterBox founder and CEO Tom Henderson

“We have all been watching from afar with great dismay the dreadful wildfire disaster Victoria. Our thoughts are with our Rotary and Australian friends at this difficult time.”

All at ShelterBox Australia extend heartfelt sympathy to those who have suffered unthinkable loss and trauma.
