Having completed her Masters at Curtin University, she is now working in Community Development at ASeTTS an Association dedicated to supporting Survivors of Torture and Trauma. Malpo came to us with a possible project, that of assisting a group from Burundi in Central Africa, who, in 2007 set up their own Peace Choir of 20-25 individuals, whom she would like to assist to help themselves. The vision is to put up funds (which would be reimbursed in time) for them to make a CD, which would be sold at concerts / functions / events where they perform. The hope is that they, with the assistance of Rotary, put on a concert which will provide the funds to pay for the production of the CD. A lot of ground work has already been done, with certain establishments and individuals offering their services free or at a very nominal cost. Ken and Malpo met with Max Kay last week and Ken, Rob, Max and I will be going to hear them on Tuesday evening, and depending on Max Kay’s evaluation of them, we will assess where we go from there, including an audition for the OZ Concert if they are of the calibre Malpo considers they are. Already, one or two of our members have offered to personally ‘loan’ amounts to have the CD produced as it would be beneficial to have this available prior to a fundraising concert. Once again, the club has the opportunity of becoming involved with another exciting community project. Alan Stewart, Dr Norm Tuppen and Ken are meeting on Friday next to talk further on the Wiluna Aboriginal project and Ken will be travelling to Wiluna with Alan on Monday 14 th Sept. Once again, depending on the outcome of these meetings, an assessment will be made as to how best to progress with the help sought for this indigenous community. Another bag of knitted beanies / scarves etc are awaiting transportation to Wiluna, which no doubt will go with Alan next week. Monday last Ken and I went out to Curtin University to see the prototype computer programme for Autism which of ‘Friend of Rotary’ member Svetha Venkatesh has spent this year working on. It is groundbreaking and we congratulate Svetha for what she is doing and wish her well in sourcing funds to get this project into operation. Hopefully, we will then be able to see Svetha as an active member of the Club. Rob Rohrlach has kindly offered the club the use of a projector, screen and portable PA system from his business. Grateful thanks Rob as this will certainly make it easier to function when we have speakers who wish to enhance their presentations with visuals. Also, the use of a PA at times would also be of enormous value. Pres. Kerry McAuliffe from the RC of Perth has reported he has another member of the RC of Perth, tax lawyer Lionel King, looking at putting the application together for the RC of Freshwater Bay’s Foundation. Elizabeth’s husband, PP Graeme Bain has kindly offered his services as Quiz Master for us and Burswood on Swan has been booked for this event on Wednesday, 21 st October. Would all members please put in a big effort to obtain suitable prizes and to encourage as many friends and family to support the night as possible as we desperately need funds to carry out projects. Yours in Rotary Service, Di Collins Charter President ShelterBox News Dear Fellow Rotarians, I have enclosed the last two newsletters. I apologise for the slight delay as my computer decided to not forward emails! I hope all is fixed. Letter From the Club PresidentDear Fellow Rotarians,

Malpo Economou, a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar from the UK to D. 9470 last year was our speaker this week.

Having completed her Masters at Curtin University, she is now working in Community Development at ASeTTS – an Association dedicated to supporting Survivors of Torture and Trauma.

Alan Stewart, Dr Norm Tuppen and Ken are meeting on Friday next to talk further on the Wiluna Aboriginal project and Ken will be travelling to Wiluna with Alan on Monday 14th Sept.

Elizabeth’s husband, PP Graeme Bain has kindly offered his services as Quiz Master for us and Burswood on Swan has been booked for this event on Wednesday, 21st

October. Would all members please put in a big effort to obtain suitable prizes and to encourage as many friends and family to support the night as possible as we desperately need funds to carry out projects.

Rotary Foundation AlumniGreetings Alumni. This is the Committee's second mail out and honouring our commitment to keep in touch. Some of you now live interstate and possibly overseas but that does not mean we can't communicate. Let us know what's happening in your part of the world.

Last year we held a highly successful Alumni reunion dinner and   by popular demand there will be another one in the first half of next year. BUT on  October 4 of this year, your Committee has planned a picnic day at Lake Leschenaultia (details and contact personnel are on the attached flyer). If you are the athletic type you may well be taking part in Rotary's big fund raiser "Climb for a Smile" on that day. If you happen to live in Queensland or Tasmania, there's a tiny possibility you won't be able to attend; but for those who live locally and not in either of those categories, why not make up party of family and friends and just have a relaxing day out? And lastly - your Committee needs helpers. Alumni does have Rotarians as members but the big majority of you

are not Rotarians.  You do not have to be a Rotarian to become a member of Committee.. You do not have to be a Rotarian to help  organise an event. If you would like to join Rotary - Great!! But what we would like to see is non Rotarian alumni participate in Committee activities.  After all it's your Committee and it exists for your  benefit. Give it some serious thought. Cheers Cleve MainChairman, State Alumni Committee

What is the Paul Harris Society? The Paul Harris Society is a special district recognition program designed for Rotarians and others who wish to support The Rotary Foundation in a more substantial way each year. The Paul Harris Society recognizes Rotarians and friends of The Rotary Foundation who annually contribute US$1,000.00 or more to the Annual Programs fund, PolioPlus or the Humanitarian Grants Program. The first Paul Harris Society was established in 1998 in D5340, California.   The idea gained momentum and quickly spread to other districts around the world. The trustees of The Rotary Foundation official ly approved the Paul Harris Society as a district administered recognition program effective 1 July 2006. The concept has been picked up in several of the districts in the Eastern States   of Australia and D9450 will be officially launching our PHS in the presence of the RI

resident at the Annual Dr Ken Collins Address on the 16th November. We already have several members and are now appealing to clubs to identify members who are willing to make The Rotary Foundation one of their charities of choice.  Remember it is OUR charity, there are no administration costs and contributions are tax deductible. Attached is the form to fill out and return to me. We want as many PHS members as possible signed up by the 16th November. If you have any queries please contact me. Kind regards, Ken CollinsD9450 TRF Chair

Pull Up Banner and Club BannerettesMarcos, Daniel and Simone are liaising on a suitable design for a pull up banner and perhaps it is timely to also look at a design for a club banner.

Quiz NightWednesday, 21st October, 2009 at Burswood on Swan, Camfield Rd, Burswood, 7.00pm for 7.30pm is the date and venue for our Quiz Night.

PP Graeme Bain from the RC of Cambridge has kindly offered his services as Quiz Master for the event.   Many thanks Graeme.   The offer has been accepted with much appreciation.

PLEASE would all members put this date in your diaries. Please also start working on spreading the word about the Quiz night, rounding up

participants and prizes for raffles, auctions  and as table prizes.   The more the better.  It is a great time to empty out cupboards of unopened, unused gifts as they make great prizes.    Also, please approach businesses and contacts for donations of items.     All members and Friends of the Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay are encouraged to get behind the club’s first serious fund raising activity as we urgently need money to carry out the projects planned by the various committees.

Club AssemblyAnother date for your diaries is Saturday, 26th September, 9.00am – 11.00am at Lotterywest, 74 Walters Dr, Osborne Park.

At our last Assembly on 25th July, it was discussed as to whether these should be continued on such a regular basis and the consensus was that they should as it allows members to have a more in-depth input into the direction of the club.   Our weekly meetings are already full and do not allow for discussion about future fundraising and social activities, possible projects etc.  Your input is valued, so please come along and add your contribution.

Climb for a SmileAndrea and Elizabeth, liaising with Director Rob are spearheading the Climb for a Smile on Sunday, 4th October.  Due to heavy work commitments Roger has had to pull back from leading this activity.   Members please e n c o u r a g e f r i e n d s , colleagues, neighbours and family to either do the climb up Bankwest Tower or sponsor anyone who is willing to do the climb.  Rob has members who have volunteered to assist with the exit.   Three members have taken raffle tickets to sell, $70

from the sale of each book will come back to the club.

Four Way Speaking Contest and Siemens Science ExperienceTwo youth projects for high school students are coming out to clubs.   Information on both these projects can be found in your District Directory, which is a great little book containing a vast amount of information on both the District and a thumbnail paragraph or two on District and International projects and programs.

Anawim Aboriginal ShelterQantas have provided female toiletries packs which Director Rob has.   An employee from Bethesda Hospital, Beverley Garrett, has obtained $100 voucher from Target to purchase pyjamas and Elizabeth Bain has $400 from a donation from Jane Armstrong’s Church which she is using to purchase pyjamas and socks.   Many thanks to all

concerned for the continued support of this project.

GSE Breaks New GroundBy Jennifer Lee Atkin  Rotary International News 4 September 2009

For 33-year-old Robb Martin, the 2009 Group Study Exchange between Rotary districts 5490 (Arizona, USA) and 9680 (New South Wales, Australia) offered more than the opportunity to compete in a sailboat race, summit a mountain, and meet with other law enforcement officers.

It was also a once-in-a-lifetime chance to participate in Rotary’s first-ever all-wheelchair GSE.

A former patrol officer from Prescott, Arizona, Martin became paralyzed from the chest down following a 2005 vehicle accident, but continues to work for the police department in the dispatch center.

"The whole point [of the GSE] was to dissolve the perception of people in wheelchairs," Martin explains. "Just because we’re in wheelchairs doesn’t mean that we can’t do things that able-bodied people can do."

The idea for an all-wheelchair GSE started two years ago when Charlie Tegarden, 2008-09 governor of District 5490, struck

up a conversation with Darol Kubacz in an airport. The two were returning from Mexico where they had helped distribute wheelchairs to the needy as part of a Rotary project. Kubacz, a wheelchair user, was curious to learn more about Rotary, and Tegarden was happy to oblige.

"Eventually, the conversation turned to Group Study Exchange," Tegarden recalls. "As I was talking about how great GSE was, I was thinking to myself that it was too bad that a person like [Kubacz] could not participate. How could he possibly travel? … Then the obvious struck me -- he was sitting right there with me in the Mexico City airport! Why couldn’t he participate in a GSE?"

Determined to host an all-wheelchair GSE, Tegarden found a partner in Tony Castley, 2008-09 governor of District 9680, whom he met at the 2007 RI Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah. Past district governors Harold Sharp (9680) and Don Schiller (5490) coordinated the exchange, and the idea became reality. Kubacz, now a member of the Rotary Club of Phoenix-West, served as the Arizona team leader.

Some Rotarians were initially a little uneasy about an all-

wheelchair GSE because of a perception that disabled people "are either subnormal or unable to live and travel independently and hold down f u l l - t i m e , w o r t h w h i l e employment," says Sharp, a member of the Rotary Club of Crows Nest, New South Wales, and the GSE’s cochair. "As a result of the exchange, the attitude in our district has totally changed."

Sharp, who is retired from a career in nonprofit management, counts himself in that group. "Though I have for many years been involved with people with disabilities, the wheelchair GSE allowed me to become very involved on a day-to-day basis. It was only then that I realized that I was totally underestimating [disabled people’s] abilities and desire to be judged on their results and not their appearances."

In Arizona, "we've opened the door now to people with disabilities," says Schiller, a member of the Rotary Club of Prescott-Sunup and the district's GSE chair. "We might not do another all-wheelchair GSE, but I can see disabled people participating in our next GSE, just like anyone else."

The Dr Ken Collins AddressMonday, 16th November, 2009

7:00pm for 7:30pm at the Golden Nugget Room, Gloucester Park.

Cost is $45.00 per person for a two course meal.  Bar service is available.

RI President John Kenny will be the keynote speaker.

The Rotary Foundation Alumni speaker will be retired Federal Court Judge Bob Nicholson.

As for Martin, he's considering joining the Prescott-Sunup club.

"As a police officer, I was able to serve the community, and that was very fulfilling to me," Martin says. "Now, I have found a way to fill that void and still get out there and help the community.

"I'd like to be a team leader in a future GSE."

The Rotary FoundationWeek 10: This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about bridging the world’s needs.

During the rainy season in Ethiopia many rural communities are isolated by fast flowing flooded rivers that separate them from vital

aspects of life. With support from a Rotary Foundation Matching grant eight foot bridges were built to alleviate these villages isolation.

Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and the Rotary Club of Gloucester, Virginia, USA these bridges will improve the living conditions of local communities and provide

them with access to life’s daily needs.

So even during the rainy season in Ethiopia, Rotarians will know that through contributions to The Rotary Foundation they helped provide a bridge out of isolation for these eight communities.

ShelterBox deploys to three disasters in 48 hours ShelterBox, international disaster relief organisation and the largest global Rotary club project, is responding to Typhoon Morakot after tens of thousands of people have been left stranded in the storm’s wake. During the past several days, the storm has passed over the Philippines, Taiwan and mainland China, leaving a trail of destruction. High winds, flooding and mudslides have left thousands in need of emergency shelter. In Taiwan, 50,000 people are stranded and flooding has submerged many homes. In China nearly 1 million people have been evacuated in the Fujian Province while 13,000 people have been displaced in the Zambales Province in the Philippines with authorities describing the situation as a calamity. Typhoon Morakot has brought with it a record amount of rainfall with close to 2.5 metres falling on Taiwan. ShelterBox is providing emergency disaster relief on all three fronts. ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) members ‘Aussie’ Peter Pearce (Aust) and Ross Mackenzie (NZ) are already on the ground in the Philippines, SRT members David Ray (UK), Philip Duloy (UK) and Mike Greenslade (UK) will arrive in Taipei, Taiwan today and SRT member Tony Zhang (CH) is assessing the situation in China. 224 ShelterBoxes are in transit to the Philippines and 100 ShelterBoxes have been sent to Taiwan. Our SRT leaders will continue to assess the need and respond accordingly. ShelterBox Founder Tom Henderson said: ‘This is a textbook ShelterBox operation. We’ve been watching this for a few days and monitoring the situation. We now have teams in place on all three fronts that will be providing emergency disaster relief as quickly as possible. With each ShelterBox containing a 10-person tent, blankets, water purification and cooking equipment, basic tools, a stove and other essential equipment, we not only provide people with emergency shelter provision but also the tools to start rebuilding their lives.’

Further updates and photographs of our disaster relief will be sent as they come to hand.

News Update

25 August, 2009

A project in Australia of the Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills

3,000+ sheltered by ShelterBox ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) members Peter ‘Aussie Pete’ Pearce, Ross Mackenzie (NZ), Lizzy Treglown (UK) and Denise Ho (USA) are working together as part of the global ShelterBox response to assist those displaced by Typhoon Morakot in the Philippines. To date, over 3,000 survivors have been housed with safety and dignity thanks to the delivery of 334 ShelterBoxes and 8 School boxes sponsored by Rotarians around the world.

Working closely with the Army and the Philippine government, our SRT members oversaw the clearing, back-fill and occupation of specifically set up ShelterBox villages. ‘Aussie Pete’ praised the assistance of his fellow Rotarians and said “it is extremely gratifying to be an integral part of uniting families again after this disaster and providing them with hope to start over.” As our international SRT colleagues head home, Rotarian and SRT member Hans Van Dyk landed in Manilla last night to assist ‘Aussie Pete’ with the final leg of the deployment – to set up yet another ShelterBox village.

ShelterBox, Rotarians and World Vision team together Rotarian and SRT member Keith Robins reports that in Taimali (city in Taitung), Taipei the river burst its boundaries to cause massive flooding, decimating bridges and roads. Normally about 100 feet wide and now a massive half a mile wide it wiped out the town on Taimali causing many millions of tonnes of trees and debris to wash out to sea and destroyed all homes in its path. Working with World Vision, ShelterBox SRT members visited the village of Jiedah (Jinfong region) and assisted those who had lost their homes to the flooding created by Typhoon Morakot.

With another delivery of ShelterBoxes to assist those affected by Typhoon Morakot, we need your help to replenish our reserve stock in Melbourne in readiness for the next disaster within our region.

We thank you for your support.
