What’s Happening Passing of the Torch – It was the summer of 2004 when we first introduced our fun to read, weekly “good news” publication to the people of St. Augustine and Palm Coast. Sixteen years, 2,392 issues, countless hurricanes and even a worldwide pandemic later, Coffee News continues to entertain our readers and is committed to helping local businesses. It has been an amazing sixteen years, filled with countless memories and many new friends. I have especially loved reading all the notes that came to us from our readers and the thanks we received from our advertisers for helping their business grow by advertising in the publication. It’s been a wonderful chapter in my life, but it’s time to start a new journey, so this issue will be my last as publisher. I am passing the Coffee News torch on to new publishers, Vanessa and Randy Cole. They have been publishing five editions of Coffee News in Georgia and Tennessee for 12 years, and bring with them the knowledge, experience and passion to continue the growth and success of our little tan paper. I will always be proud of how Coffee News has grown to become part of your lives and the joy it has brought to so many of you. Damaged merchandise: If parents plan to go to a dealership to shop for a new car, it’s best to find a babysitter for their small child. A couple from Guilin, Guangxi Region, China, learned this the hard way. The couple, accompanying a friend, were talking to salespeople and gawking at the luxurious new cars in the showroom. Left to her own devices, their child decided to doodle on a number of the new cars, using a stone to scratch designs into the paint. The little girl’s creative streak led to her father being sued by the dealership for damages. Black and white: Who knew that a few drops of ink mixed with a bit of water could result in beautiful works of art? Well, perhaps it’s not as easy as that, but French artist David Bayo has figured it out. Using this medium, he creates subtle paint- ings of his subjects, including animals and people. Bayo has tried different ways to make art, and his experimentation led him to an ability to understand how ink and water work together. The paintings he creates, which are often black and white, are distinctive and understated representations of the subject at hand. Two names: In Tamaulipas, Mexico, a pet cat has two owners who did not know about each other until recently. Mary Lore Barra calls the cat “Pixi,” and she was accustomed to her pet being away for a few days at a time, presumably on the prowl. Then one day Pixi came home with a new collar. Barra put a note under the collar identifying the cat as Pixi and herself as Pixi’s owner. Soon Pixi came home with a note from another family, who call the cat “Huarache.” Luckily, the two owners think it’s a funny situation, and they continue to share Pixi/Huarache. ATM captive: A contractor in Corpus Christi, Texas (U.S.), was just trying to do his job. He was fixing a lock in the auto- matic teller machine (ATM) room when he locked himself in. The man had left his cell phone in his vehicle, so he couldn’t call for assistance. Instead, he wrote notes asking for help and fed them through the receipt slot of the ATM. People using the machine thought the notes were a joke. But finally, one person took it seriously and called police, who broke down the door and got him out. Quoteable Quotes Quoteable Quotes “Manifest plainness, Embrace simplicity, Reduce selfishness, Have few desires.” —Lao-tzu “I got myself a start by giving myself a start.” —Madame C.J. Walker What’s Happening Trivia 1. The sport of basketball was invented in 1891, 1909, or 1923? 2. What does it mean if you are “under the weather”? 3. But a Jamaican woman decided she didn’t want to berecognized after she won $1.4 million (USD) in a lottery.During the presentation of her large check, the woman, knownas N. Gray, donned an enormous, round, yellow, smiling emojimask, complete with a winking eye. There is no way anyonewould ever recognize her! The woman, who won the money ina Super Lotto game, told organizers that she plans to carry onwith life as usual. She won’t quit her job, but she may go on acruise just for fun.Saving the child: A brave ex-soldier from Huaihua, HunanProvince (China), completed a daring civilian rescue after hesaw a child in danger on a fifth floor window of an apartmentcomplex. Zhang Xin used window grill bars to climb to thechild, who was dangling precariously, while worried onlookerswatched from below. Some of the onlookers managed to get atarp in place beneath him in case he fell, but he didn’t! Uponreaching the fifth floor, he managed to push the crying toddlerback into the apartment. Furry baby: When fully grown, a bear is unlikely to be mistakenfor a dog. But what about when they are babies? A man fromYongsheng County, Yunnan Province (China), did just that. When he was out looking for wild mushrooms, he came across alittle puppy, or so he thought. He took the pup home andlooked after it, but must have realized something was amisswhen the puppy grew into a very large Asian bear, which is aprotected species. The man kept the bear in a cage, but tookgood care of it. Someone reported him, and authorities claimedthe bear. The man was not fined because he was cooperativeand the bear was in good health.Escaped pigs: A security camera revealed that, in the middle ofthe night, two pigs appeared at a gas station in Upper Coomera,Queensland (Australia). When the sun came up, the porky beastsgreeted amused customers and staff, many of whom took photos. The pigs spent several hours checking out people and cars. They also enjoyed rutting around in a garden before taking anap. It turns out that the friendly, but mischievous, pair had gottenaway from their owner’s home, located not far from the gasstation. The owner soon arrived on the scene to pick up thetwo curly-tailed beasts.
