£2.50 D791 a6 Booklet 64ppISBN 978-1-78469-028-1

“With its invitations to conversion, Lent comes providentially to awaken us, to rouse us from torpor, from the risk of moving forward by inertia. The exhortation which the Lord addresses to us through the prophet Joel is strong and clear: “Return to me with all your heart!” (Jl 2:12) Pope Francis invites us to make the journey with him through the liturgical feasts and seasons in Lent and Easter, moving from repentance to forgiveness and new life which allow us to proclaim the Gospel with joy to the whole world.

Do You Love Me?A Practical Guide to Catholic Prayer & Spirituality

Catholic Bishops Conference of England & wales, CBCEw£5.95 D786 A5 Booklet 88pp

ISBN 978 1 78469 011 3

Do You Love Me? is a response by the Bishops of England and Wales to many requests for a handbook on Christian spirituality. This is a pastoral document offering a practical guide to personal and shared prayer. Many of the great saints have left their own Testament and witness to the following of Jesus Christ. Each of these has its own validity and have stood the test of time. This text seeks to prove a prayerful answer to the questions posed by Jesus in the twenty first chapter of St John’s Gospel, “Do you love me?”, offering some aspects of the Catholic tradition in a reflective manner. All are invited to use it in furthering their relationship with the Lord in ways rooted in Catholic tradition. “Lord, you know that I love you. You have the messsage of eternal life.” John 21:1-3

Heroes of the faith

George Lemaitre posterFather of the Big Bang Theory

In 1931, the Belgian priest, Fr George Lemaître proposed what would become known as the ‘Big Bang Theory’ on the origins of the universe. Five years later, he was nominated to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. This poster - full of colour and perfect for the physics classroom - has a diagram explaining the theory. It is a simple way to show that Faith leads to a greater, not a lesser understanding of the material world.

George Mendel PosterFather of GeneticsText by fr andrew Pinsent

Mendel worked at an Augustinian monastery in what is now the Czech Republic, beginning his most famous experiment on the inherited characteristics of pea plants in 1856. He later became abbot of the monastery and his work revolutionised the breeding of plants and animals. In this poster Mendel’s Three Laws are explained, alongside a diagram demonstrating his theory. This is a perfect resource for the biology classroom.

J.R.R. Tolkien PosterFather of Modern Fantasy LiteratureText by fr andrew Pinsent

This poster, designed for the English room, tells how J.R.R. Tolkien, a devout Catholic raised by the Fathers of the Birmingham Oratory, changed the history of literature. Tolkien’s work as a linguist is emphasised, as is his friendship with another great modern fantasy writer, C.S. Lewis, who encouraged Tolkien to publish his tales about Hobbits and their adventures. Professor Tolkien’s deep faith helped him to understand and explain the great battle between good and evil.

Maria Agnesi PosterFisrt Female Professor of MathematicsText by fr andrew Pinsent

Appointed to the Chair of Mathematics at the prestigious University of Bologna in 1750 by Pope Benedict XIV, she later died a nun. This poster shows different aspects of her work, from maths, to natural philosophy. It has been specifically designed for display in the maths classroom. It demonstrates, among other things, her work with algebra and the curve she studied, known as the ‘Witch of Agnesi’.

Guido d’Arezzo PosterFather of Musical NotationText by fr andrew Pinsent

This colourful and informative poster, ideal for the music room, explains how Guido d’Arezzo, a Benedictine monk, came up with the system of modern notation in the 11th century. It demonstrates how he changed the way music was written and read, by inventing staff notation. It meant monks did not have to learn all the ecclesiastical melodies by rote. The Guidonian hand, pictured was a way of learning to read music.

Josephine BakhitaA Survivor of Human Trafficking

Jean Olwen Maynard£2.50 B667 A6 Booklet 80pp

ISBN 978 1 78469 025 0

“Human trafficking is an open wound on the body of contemporary society, a scourge upon the body of Christ. It is a crime against humanity.” - Pope Francis

St Josephine Bakhita was a trafficked child: abducted from her home and family by slave traders, sold, re-sold and horribly abused. Yet her discovery of Jesus Christ, her true master, gave meaning to her appalling suffering.

Saints of AfricaJean Olwen Maynard£2.50 B762 A6 Booklet 92pp

ISBN 978 1 78469 037 3

The African saints that Catholics are most likely to have heard of – even if they don’t know much about them – lived a very long time ago, and often in parts of Africa which are no longer Christian.  In our own time, and in the more recently-Christianised parts of Africa, the Catholic Church is growing faster than perhaps anywhere else in the world – but what do we know about the modern saints of Africa?  Here’s a chance to find out.

John OgilvieJesuit in disguise (1579-1615)

Eleanor McDowell£2.50 B761 A6 Booklet 64ppIISBN 978 1 78469 027 4

Born of noble parentage, Saint John Ogilvie was raised in the Calvinist tradition and sent abroad to be educated. During a period of spiritual contemplation he converted to Catholicism and was ordained a Jesuit priest. Despite the risk of preaching in a reformed Protestant Scotland, he returned, disguised as horse trader. Within a year he was imprisoned, and later hanged for refusing to recognise the spiritual jurisdiction of the King. The 10th March 2015 marks the 400th anniversary of the death of Scotland’s only Catholic reformation martyr.
