New Jersey State Opera, at new home in Clifton, stages Rossini’s ‘TheBarber of Seville’

Under the baton of Artistic Director and MaestroJason C. Tramm, pictured above, the New Jersey

State Opera now calls Clifton’s Aprea Theater home

and will stage Rossini’s Barber of Seville on various

June dates. Tramm has recently been named as an

emerging young artist by Symphony Magazine.

Tenor Luigi Boccia sings the role of Count Alma-

viva and baritone Ross Benoliel appears as Figaro

with baritone Stefano de Peppo as Don Bartolo. Per-

formances are on June 1 and 8 at 7:30 pm and the

June 3 and 10 matinees are at 3 pm.

The Little Falls Alliance for a Better Community pres-

ents its fifth annual weekly Friday Summer Concert Series.

Reminisce, an oldies band, kicks off the series on June 28.

July’s performers include Soul Groove, The Kootz, The

Banjo Rascals and the Richard Reiter Swing Band. August

features the Jersey Girls, Straight Nasty, Thunderhill Band,

Double Tap and Maristella. All shows are held at Memorial

Park at Main St. and Wilmore Rd. at the Gazebo at 7 pm.

In the event of rain, concerts are indoors at the Civic Center

on Warren and Center Sts. For more information, visit

Eighteen-time Grammy winner Jimmy Sturr and his or-chestra will perform on July 26 beginning at 7:30 pm in a

free concert at the band shell in Passaic’s Third Ward Park,

at the corner of Passaic and Van Houten Aves. Sturr

mixes it up with classic oldies, modern pop and, the music

for which he is most famous, polkas. Concert-goers are

asked to bring chairs or blankets. Info: 973-473-5111.

The Wayne Public Library Lunchbox Learning Programcontinues on June 13 with Beacons of the Night, a presen-

tation on lighthouses by Trish Chambers, and on June 27

with the Carol Hamersma Jazz Trio. These programs are

free—doors open at noon (bring a brown bag lunch, light

refreshments provided), and they begin at 12:30 pm.

Chambers is the author of the book Lighthouses of theNew Jersey Lighthouse Challenge, and her work will be

available for purchase and signing. The Library is at 461

The Clifton Association of Artists summer exhibit is Hom-age to Nature and will be held at the NJ Meadowlands

Commission Flyway Gallery in Lyndhurst. The exhibit will

run from June 4 through August 3. A reception will be

held on June 9, noon to 2 pm. Gallery viewing hours are

from 8 am to 4 pm on weekdays and 10 am to 3 pm on Sat-

urday and Sunday. Annual CAA membership is $20 and of-

The Passaic County Senior Citizen Art Exhibition is dis-

played June 1-22 at the Passaic County Senior Services of-

fice, 930 Riverview Dr., Suite 200, Totowa. A reception and

The Youth Performance Festival, featuring soloists and

ensembles, both instrumental and vocal, presented by the

The 17th phase of the Silk Walk Project will be unveiled at 1 pm on

June 3 at the Annual General Membership Meeting of the American

Labor Museum/Botto House National Landmark. A successful

fundraiser that began in 1994, patrons purchase engraved bricks for

placement at the Landmark’s front walkway and under its grape arbor.

Funds are used for the Museum’s upkeep and educational programs.

Silk Walk bricks are priced from $50 to $200. The Botto House is at

83 Norwood St., Haledon, and was the meeting place for over 20,000

silk mill workers during the 1913 Paterson Silk Strike. For hours,

Art of Men: Fathers, Brothers, Sons and Husbands is an exhibit and

sale of oil, acrylic, pastels, sculpture and mixed-media by various

male artists on display June 20 to July 28 at the Clifton Arts Center &

Sculpture Park, 900 Clifton Ave. There will be a reception open to the

public on June 28 from 6 to 8 pm. Admission is $3 for non-members.

Gallery hours are Wed. through Sat. from 1 to 4 pm. Group tours are

available by appointment. The Gallery first opened to the public in

January of 2000 and more than 28,000 visitors have enjoyed art ex-

hibits and cultural events. The Clifton Arts Center is located on the

grounds of the Clifton Municipal complex near Well Rd. Throughout

Arts For Kids, Inc. (AFK) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated

to transforming the lives of children and families through the arts.

AFK does that by hiring experienced teaching artists to instruct youth

and families in music, dance, drama and visual arts. Paid residencies

are available for summer and fall after-school programs to instruct

children in grades K-8 in the metro Paterson area. To be considered

ATC Studios, at 68 Union Ave. in downtown Clifton, hosts summer

workshops for teens and young adults at the TBG Theatre, at 312 W

36th St. in NYC. The program, which starts July 2, runs Monday to

Friday through July. Kids (7-14) will perform in NYC on July 30 and

31 and Teens/Young Adults (14-25) on August 1 and 2. Participants

The Outdoor Art Show at the Louis Bay 2nd Library, 345 Lafayette

Ave., Hawthorne, seeks artist in all categories. Sponsored by the

Friends of the Library on Sept. 15, the show accepts all media and is

open to adults and children, who will be judged separately. The Lydia

Gaveglio Ribbon will be awarded for best in show, and ribbons for

first, second and third place will be awarded. The event is indoors in

The Passaic County Cultural and Her-itage Council (PCCHC) at Passaic County

Community College is currently offering

arts and history re-grants.

In order to be eligible, the applicant

must: 1) be based in Passaic County;

2) be a tax-exempt non-profit organization

incorporated in Passaic County or a munici-

pal government entity; 3) have been in exis-

tence at least two years; 4) demonstrate that

the project has clear artistic or historic

merit; 5) match every dollar of the arts re-

grant with one dollar of its own (a portion

of this match can be in-kind contributions),

and match every dollar of the history re-

grant with fifty cents of its own; and 6) use

the re-grant for the following:

• An arts or cultural project (dance, media

arts, music, theater, visual arts, etc.) to take

place in Passaic County between January 1

and December 31, 2013, and that culmi-

nates in a public presentation.

• A local or New Jersey history project tak-

ing place in Passaic County between July 1,

2012 and June 30, 2013, and that culmi-

nates in a public presentation.

The deadline for arts applications is

July 12 and for history applications, July

19. Applications and guidelines are avail-

able online at www.pccc.edu/pcchc (click

on the ‘grants’ tab).

schedule a one-on-one meeting. Meetings

can be scheduled Monday through Friday,

arranged. All applicants are asked to

complete a first draft of the application, in-

cluding the narrative and budget, and bring

it to the meeting.

PCCHC strives to maintain a barrier-free

facility, including complete access for pa-

trons using wheelchairs. 

Paterson: Alone Together II, a series of silkscreen

prints by So Yoon Lym, features images of Paterson

and are displayed in the LRC Gallery at PCCC.

Paterson: Alone Together is an exhibition by

artist So Yoon Lym of large-scale portraits of

hair and braid patterns, and a new series of 11

silkscreened prints about Paterson. Lym used

the CMYK process of silkscreen printing for the

images to create a composite photographic color

image of a street, roadway or house in Paterson.

The show is on view in the Broadway & LRC

Galleries at Passaic County Community Col-

lege, Memorial Dr., Paterson, through June 22.

The Ringwood Manor Association of the Artspresents the 47th Annual Members Exhibition.

The exhibit—featuring works in oil, acrylic,

pastels, mixed-media and photography by pro-

fessional and amateur artists—is displayed

through June 20. The artists’ reception is on

June 3, from 1 to 4 pm. Admission is free. The

Barn gallery is in Ringwood Manor State Park

and is open Wednesdays, weekends and holi-

The artwork of Sarah Smith is displayed at the Lena Di

Gangi Gallery, 320 Union Blvd., Totowa, June 1 to 28.

Smith is an oil painter from Ringwood who received a BFA

in 2011 from School of Visual Arts in NYC. Her work is

characterized by realistic depictions, unlikely composition

and a profound respect for animals. Free; a reception for the
