The rate of return on tax money invested in community colleges is an impressive 14 percent.State and county governments actually makemoney from investing in community colleges.

State and local government support for NewJersey’s community colleges is fully recovered in 9.2 years, in the form of higher tax receipts fromincreased student wages and avoided costs fromreduced public expenditures.

New Jersey’s annual workforce earnings are $6.3 billion greater due to the past and presentoperation of community colleges.

Ninety-five percent of commu-nity college students stay

in New Jersey and contribute to the

statewide economyafter they leave the communitycollege.

In addition, New Jersey’s business sales

are $16 billionlarger due to the

operation of com-munity colleges.

For every $1 invested in New Jersey’s community colleges, over $18 dollars in overall benefits arereturned throughout the state – an impressive 18-to-1benefits-to-cost ratio.

People with a community college education are lesslikely to smoke, drink, draw welfare or unemploymentbenefits or commit crimes. Their added skills translateinto higher earnings, increased tax receipts, fewer socialservices and a more robust state economy.

Students who complete an associate degree will earnnearly $400,000 more in additional lifetime incomeover the course of their careers. This is 37 percentmore than people with only a high school diploma or GED.

Students who earn a one-year certificate from a com-munity college earn as much as 16 percent more thanpeople with only a high school diploma or GED.

Students who enroll part-time at a community collegecan expect to earn about $500 more per year for eachcommunity college course they complete.

For every $1 a student spends on a community collegeeducation, his/her discounted lifetime earnings willincrease $7.91.

Students recover all costs, including wages forgonewhile attending a community college, within six years.
