Recent Bachelor of Arts graduate Mrs Beverley(Bev) Staines lived in Coober Pedy from 1995 to

2012. She was a member of the Coober Pedy OpalFields Golf Club for 10 years and served as the

Club President from 2008 to 2012.

Mrs Staines also served as a Councillor on the DistrictCouncil of Coober Pedy from 2006 to 2010.

Former local graduates fromUniversity … at 74!

In 2011, she decided to enrol as a mature age student atthe Coober Pedy Area School, setting the record as theoldest enrolled student ever at the school by around 50years! There is little doubt that that record will stand formany more years to come.

As reported by the Coober Pedy Regional Times on the26th May 2011, Bev was a runner-up in the local WestpacRuby Awards. The Ruby Awards was an initiative ofWestpac in celebration of the 100th Anniversary ofInternational Women’s Day. Bev won the award for hercommitment to lifelong learning and the hope that heractions may inspire other women to chase their dreamsno matter what their circumstances.

Many may recognise Bev from her 15 years spent as theCourt Registrar at the Coober Pedy Magistrates Court. In2010, the Government of South Australia decided to closea number of court houses in regional SA, including CooberPedy, and Bev’s position was made redundant.

Bev was 70 years old and needed to decide what to donext. Most people would think about early retirement andmaybe buying a caravan; but Bev has never been like mostpeople!

After her studies in Coober Pedy, Bev applied and wasaccepted into Flinders University in Adelaide and soonheaded south to commence her tertiary education.

Beverley Staines B.A. graduated from FlindersUniversity on the 12 April 2016

“In that era, most fathers could not see the point in theirdaughters furthering their education; they thought it awaste of money,” said Bev.

Many young women today do not understand what it waslike for girls growing up prior to the cultural revolution ofthe 1960s.

“In around 1963, I had been continuously employed forover 5 years and wanted to purchase some property. Butall the banks rejected my loan applications. Back then bankswouldn’t lend to single women and if I wanted to buyproperty they said it would have to be in a male relative’sname,” Bev said.

Gender equality has improved dramatically in the past 50years, but in many ways, we still have a long way to goas a nation.

“I knew in my heart that I could have completed mymatriculation and gone on to university back then, but Ireally wanted to prove it to myself and now I have,” Bevconcluded.

Bev is a testament to the fact that, no matter what yourage, gender, colour or creed, you can do anything if youstick to your goals and set your mind to it!

After 3 years of further studies, on the 12th April 2016,she graduated from university with a Bachelor of ArtsDegree, majoring in History.

“Back in the 1950s, women were never expected to bein the workforce for very long,’ Bev explained.

“Women generally worked for a few a years but whenthey got married they were expected to resign to performhousehold duties,” she said.

Bev was a boarder at Our Lady of Mercy College inGoulburn, New South Wales.

“I was a promising student and the nuns at the collegesent letters to my father asking him to let me do mymatriculation so I could go on to university. But he said no.

In 2011 Bev accepts a Westpac Ruby awardfrom Westpac employee Richelle Borrett. Bevwon the award for her commitment to lifelonglearning..

Police News15 April 2016 Minister for Justice Michael Keenan

and South Australia Police Minister PeterMalinauskas today announced a dedicated National

Anti-Gangs Squad (NAGS) Strike Team for SouthAustralia to tackle outlaw motorcycle gangs.

“Organised crime gangs and outlaw motorcycle gangsrepresent an ongoing criminal threat to our country. Theyare violent predators who profit from the misery of drugtrafficking, drug manufacturing, extortion, prostitutionand firearms trafficking,” Mr Keenan said.

The Adelaide-based Strike Team includes officers fromthe Australian Federal Police and Australian Tax Officeworking within the South Australia Police.

This is the fifth Strike Team established nationally bythe Commonwealth and follows on from teams launchedin Queensland and New South Wales, Victoria andWestern Australia with liaison officers in otherjurisdictions.

“We know for a fact that OMCGs are underworldmarket drivers in crimes such as drug manufacturingand trafficking, extortion, prostitution and firearmstrafficking. But modern technologies are also enablingthese criminals to expand their reach globally and injectthemselves beyond traditional business models into newmarkets – increasing the misery being peddled andgenerating greater proceeds from crime,” Mr Keenansaid.

“Australia has become a target for organised criminalsfrom all around the world because Australians are payingtop dollar for the misery these crooks peddle like thedrug ice. Users are not only bankrolling the gangs thatare infiltrating and destroying our communities with theirdangerous drugs, but they are ensuring our nationremains a lucrative market for criminal exploitation.

“A NAGS South Australian Liaison Officer position wascreated in January 2014, resulting in 16 SA Police andnine AFP-led gang-related operations. Today’sannouncement commits a further $3.252 million ofCommonwealth funding over the next 15 months toexpand the scope of work and help rid the communityof the menace posed by organised, gang-related crime.

Dedicated strike team totarget organised gangs in SA

“Our law enforcement agencies are going as hard asthey can with all the tools we have provided, but theseefforts will always be challenged by OMCGs and theircriminal business models. The SA Strike Team will useall of the resources at the disposal of the CommonwealthGovernment to tackle and destroy organised criminalgangs such as outlaw motorcycle gangs,” Mr Keenansaid.

Mr Malinauskas said the new strike team wouldstrengthen law enforcement’s efforts in SA to protectcommunities from outlaw motorcycle gangs.

“The establishment of the NAGS SA Strike Team willinitiate an unprecedented level of cooperation betweenAustralian law enforcement agencies to address gang-related organised crime and outlaw motor cycle gangactivity in SA,” Mr Malinauskas said.

“The Strike Teams provide a mechanism for the nationalcoordination of investigations, access to broaderCommonwealth capabilities in support of state activityand an enhanced ability to share information and conductinvestigations in collaboration with international lawenforcement partners.

“The new Strike Team will work in partnership with theexisting SA Police Crime Gangs Task Force to createan intelligence-led approach on the states most notoriousgangs,” Mr Malinauskas said.

To date the NAGS Strike Teams successes include morethan 1000 offenders arrested on more than 3000 chargesand the seizure of 555 illegal guns, $5.4 million in cash, illegal drugs including more than 130 kilograms ofmethamphetamine and more than $9.8 million has beenraised following taxation assessments. The NAGS hasalso supported international law enforcement partnersin the arrest of 25 offenders overseas.

The NAGS is now made up of 91 members nationwidefrom the AFP and state police forces and also includesofficers from the Australian Crime Commission (ACC),Australian Customs and Border Protection Service(ACBPS), the Department of Immigration and BorderProtection (DIBP), the Australian Taxation Office(ATO) and the Department of Human Services.

On Friday 1st May 2016, Police arrested a 45 year oldCoober Pedy man after he allegedly punched and kickedhis partner. He was charged with breaching an interventionorder and aggravated assault. He was remanded incustody to the Port Augusta Gaol and will be furtherappearing in court on 26th May.

She wasreported for driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, driving unlicensed, driving under the influence andexceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol. Hervehicle was impounded. She was issued with animmediate licence disqualification for 12 months. Shewill appear in court at a later date.

During the last fortnight there has been a spate ofminor thefts around Coober Pedy. These have beenpredominately from insecure vehicles and caravans. Thetarget of these thefts has been money and small electronicdevices. With the tourist season now in full swing theseopportunist thieves are unfortunately targeting visitorsthat have been a bit casual with security whilst onholidays.

The prevalence of these offences can adversely impacton the standing of Coober Pedy as a tourist destination. As a result Coober Pedy Police are working hard toaddress these petty crimes. To assist, police welcomeany information in relation to these offences.

After 2013 media broadcasts claiming unbelievablepotential of Linc Energy’s shale oil and coal

deposits surrounding Coober Pedy, on 15th April2016, the company announced that it had entered

voluntary administration.

Three years ago the Advertiser headline excited theworld, albeit momentarily, announcing that “$20 trillionshale oil find surrounding Coober Pedy ‘can fuelAustralia’”. The article implied that the “estimated”resource was comparable to all of the known oil reservesin Saudi Arabia – the world’s largest oil producing nation.

The media hype was phenomenal and the news wentglobal within hours. Some websites stated that CooberPedy was “in the process of being transformed” andthat the discovery had “drawn in 20,000 additionalpeople” into the community. Conspiracies theorists madeoutlandish claims, one of which suggested that thediscovery would trigger a global “energy war”.

At the time Linc’s Managing Director, Mr Peter Bond, said that the discovery was “several times bigger thanall of the oil in Australia” and was “bigger than theCooper Basin and Bass Strait combined”.

2 months later, Linc Energy’s share price peaked at $3.04and its market capitalisation soured to around $2B. Laterin 2013 Linc delisted from the Australian StockExchange and moved to Singapore. Linc’s share pricelast traded at S8.9c (AUD 8.5c) and its market valuewas a meagre $10M.

Linc had big plans for creating an unconventional gasindustry around Coober Pedy utilising underground coalgasification (UCG) technology. The UCG processinvolves fracturing underground coal seams, igniting thecoal underground, injecting oxygen or air into the coalseam to keep it combusting whilst extracting the resultingsynthesis gas or ‘Syngas’ through production wells drilledfrom the surface.

$20 Trillion Dream Ends inAdministration for Linc Energy

Many within the local community and the surroundingregion may be thanking their lucky stars that Linc’s shaleoil and coal reserves never progressed beyond theexploration phase.

In what is possibly the biggest environmental case inAustralia’s history, on 11 March 2016 (just 5 weeks priorto entering voluntary administration), Linc was committedto stand trial to defend itself against five counts of causingserious environmental harm in relation to its UCG pilotproject near the Queensland town of Chinchilla. If foundguilty, the company could be fined up to $32.5 millionand senior company executives could face a maximumfive-year jail term.

According to an independent study commissioned byQueensland’s environmental department, in August 2007,Linc injected air into a coal seam at too higher pressureresulting in the fracturing of not only the coal seam butalso the overburden. The action allegedly resulted in theloss of containment of gases and the release ofcontaminants including methane, hydrogen, carbonmonoxide and hydrogen sulphide.

BY: STEPHEN STAINES

Documents lodged with the court also allege unreportedbenzene (a known carcinogenic) contamination ofgroundwater at levels more than 60 times higher thanpermitted.

The area damaged is not yet fully understood but estimatessuggest the contaminated land could cover up to 320square kilometres.

As a seemingly obvious indicator that something was notright, in 2013 staff at the Chinchilla site had complainedof a variety of ailments allegedly caused by odours fromdams at the site including bleeding noses, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headaches, blurred vision andrespiratory ailments.

Linc Energy has denied any fault.

The Chinchilla UCG Project was a pilot project and Linchad intended to use the same or similar UCG technologyto produce Syngas from coal seams around Coober Pedy.

It looks like any shale oil and coal resources surroundingCoober Pedy will remain untapped for the foreseeablefuture. Maybe a blessing in disguise.

Abseiling in Saturday’s training exercise arevolunteer Michael Beelitz and at the bottom isMatthew Hardy - volunteer.

Saturday 9th April 2016 Mine Rescue/SES volunteerslearned and practiced how to organise and perform a

vertical rescue at an old opal mine/open cut out onthe opal fields.

Kylie-Anne Child is a volunteer rescuer in the harshoutback town of Coober Pedy. Kylie-Anne explains thetraining scenario. “For this exercise a person had fallenapproximately 13 metres (42 ft) and we had to abseil downto the casualty to stabilise and remove them to a moreaccessible area for transport to medical facilities.”

“This involved not only lowering crew to the casualty, but we had to attach the stokes litter (containing emergencybag) and ladder to ropes to lower them to the casualty aswell,” continued Kylie-Anne

“The casualty was then placed into the stokes litter and astretcher lashing applied to keep the casualty safe andsecure. Rope attachments were placed on the litter (whichwould later assist with control when lowering) and thecasualty was then carried to the ladder. The casualty wascarefully lowered with the ladder providing a base andthe ropes were used to control the descent to the waitingcrew below. The casualty was then walked out of thebulldozer cut. A training dummy was used rather than anactual crew member,” Kylie-Anne told us.

Kylie-Anne has been in Mine Rescue at Coober Pedy for3 years. Before that she served in the Tea Tree Gully SESUnit with her total SES experience coming up to the 5year mark.

Mine Rescue/SES Unit Manager Andy Sheils said, “Keepingourselves prepared for rescue work is not all abseiling.Lives depend on our teamwork, varied training andcollective experience. We always welcome volunteerenquiries from dedicated community members,” he said.

NEW PARTNERSHIP CREATES PEAKTIME FOR TRAININGCoober Pedy’s TAFE SA campus and the Coober

The increase in activity was obvious to Coober PedyMayor Michelle Provatidis, who recently toured theschool with the Federal Member for Grey, RowanRamsey MP, along with Mr Ireland and Ms Mibus.

SONGBIRD THE MAGPIERECEIVES GOVERNOR’S AWARD!

Without doubt Coober Pedy is a most unusual place tolive. Its bleak sun scorched landscape, pock marked withthe tailings of underground dwellings is deeply loved byits inhabitants. But the real caricature of the town is itsinhabitants. And Coober Pedy has long been proud of thecultural diversity of its inhabitants, boasting over 47different nationalities in a population base of only a fewthousand.

With almost everyone from somewhere else it has becomea characteristic of the town to accept people as locals theminute they turn up. They are soon recruited into thevarious business, government and volunteer organisations.

This open friendly town has just received the Governors“Multicultural Award” for “Songbird the Magpie” inflatablestorytelling tent. Monique Harding and Ishka Maat attendedGovernment House to receive the handmade glass vasemade by Eamonn Vereker and gold embossed with the“Governor’s” “Multicultural Awards 2015” “Winner”“Arts and Culture Organisation”. Coober PedyMulticultural Forum Incorporated.

The awards were presented by His Excellency theHonourable Hieu Van Le AO, Governor of South Australia,at Government House

This is a remarkable achievement made even moreremarkable when you consider the decision was made bysome of South Australia’s most prominent professionals. So at this point when a writer should list these esteemedpeople just to show the prestige of the award, I choosenot to but instead start at the other end and mention themost important people in this award and that is all theresidents of Coober Pedy.

Community projects like this only come once in a hundredyears and in our hundredth anniversary we were fortunateto call upon the skill and experience of Artists KalynaMicenko and Bob Daly whom designed the opal like nestthat that was the canvas for the people of Coober Pedy, children to elders to express their creativity.

Songbird was also lucky to have the support andenthusiasm of local Newspaper Editor Margaret Mackay(Coober Pedy Regional Times).

“It wasn’t hard to recognise that Songbird the Magpiewas a whole of community project that captured thecolour and culture of our outback opal mining town anddeserved to be acknowleged accordingly. The GovernorsMulticultural Award is a wonderal addition to our Centenaryyear celebrations”, said Ms Mackay.

The Songbird Project was never meant to be an exampleof multiculturalism. It couldn’t help but be that way. Wedidn’t want to disrespect any cultures inadvertently so alot of consultation went into the design of the project. Alot of different groups and individuals were invited tocontribute. Hundreds of people all put in their own littlepiece. So many people have helped in some way or otherthat it has become a real issue keeping track of who shouldbe acknowledged by name publicly.

It is for this reason we can say this award is for CooberPedy and all its residents. Without them making this townfunction and setting the town’s cultural environment, regardless of their direct involvement in the songbird tent, this project could never have happened. A truly multiculturaltown. A town to be proud of being a resident of.

Reminder for suicideprevention grants

Funding for RuralCounsellors to ContinueFederal Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey has welcomedthis week’s announcement by Deputy Prime MinisterBarnaby Joyce that funding for Rural Financial CounsellingServices (RFCS) will continue for the next three years.

“People who live and work in rural and remotecommunities have to deal with hardships such asunpredictable climate and market conditions, financialstrain, social isolation, long working hours and reducedaccess to services,” Mr Ramsey said.

“Statistics show farming communities in Australiaexperience mental health problems at twice the rate of thegeneral population and suicide rates are alarmingly high incountry areas.

“Twelve service providers around the nation will be ableto continue their valuable work in helping our farmingfamilies, including Rural Business Support ServiceIncorporated in South Australia,” Mr. Ramsey said.

“More than 5,000 clients across Australia accessed RFCSservices last year, a clear indication of how valuable it isto farming businesses.

“The continuing funding package of $47 million throughto 2019 demonstrates the Coalition Government’ s absolutecommitment to supporting our farmers, fishers and ruralsmall businesses who need advice on managing theirfinances.”

Mr Ramsey said core funding for the RFCS had continuedto increase under the Coalition Government, rising from$13.56 million in 2012-13 under Labor, up to $15.01 millionby the end of the new funding round in 2018-19.

“The Government is also implementing improvementsflowing from the National Rural Advisory Council’s 2014review, including increased flexibility to boost resourcesin areas where there is a spike in demand, such ascommunities hit by drought, flood and other events,” hesaid.

“The RFCS is jointly funded and I welcome the ongoingcommitment of state and territory governments insupporting the programme. It has been providing animportant service to farmers and rural communities foralmost 30 years, and we are continuing to demonstrateour commitment to this service.”

Another long crack (right) has appeared in the earthalong the Oodnadatta Road opposite the Coober

Pedy sewerage plant. The crack was found on the 11April 2016, but by all appearances had developed

prior to recent rain.

The latest crack is similar in length and within some metresof a larger and deeper crack that appeared in June 2013causing a great deal of interest and speculation that hasnever been resolved.

In the previous case, a local earthquake was ruled out asnone were recorded locally at that time, although therehad been 5 earthquakes in one day on the APY Lands, around the approximate time of the cracking.

Perhaps an enthusiastic Sci-Fi director will make a sequelto Pitch Black and help us solve the mystery of the cracks,at least on celluloid anyway.
