Students are taught using teambased learning and the newformat uses mobile devices such as iPads.
SINGAPORE: The Nanyang Technological University hasimplemented a new learning format that leverages technology for itsRenaissance Engineering Programme.
The programme bridges engineering, business and the liberal arts toengage students in active learning and critical thinking. Students aretaught using teambased learning. The new format uses mobiletechnology such as iPads and has students learning in small groups.
The pilot started last August for Year 1 students and will officially beimplemented starting with the incoming August intake.
Teambased learning will comprise 30 per cent of the curriculum. Theuniversity plans to increase this to up to 60 per cent of the curriculumby 2017.
Professor Teoh Swee Hin, director of the Renaissance EngineeringProgramme at Nanyang Technological University, said: “It has beensaid that every time a lecturer gives a standard lecture, the studentswill remember no more than 10 per cent. But in teambased learning,it has been shown that more than 60 per cent of retention in theknowledge and application when they discuss has been achieved."
Said Mr Jonathan Tan, a student of the Renaissance EngineeringProgramme: "I think teambased learning with the RenaissanceEngineering Programme has transformed the way we learn.
"During lessons, we have to collaborate with one another and we getto input our diverse opinions on the matter, so it allows us to tacklehighlevel problems which we will struggle to do alone. And the
