Conn-Selmer, Inc. Is leading manufacturer and distributer of band and or-chestral instruments for professional, amateur and student use. Conn-Selmer, Inc. is the largest manufacturer of wind instruments in the United States. The company makes and distributes many prominent brands of musical instruments, including C.G. Conn, King band instruments, Bach trumpets, and instruments made under the names Armstrong, Glaesel, Scherl & Roth, Musser, and Wm. Lewis & Son. Many of these are historic brands with a cherished reputation among both professional and amateur musicians. Conn and Selmer were both leading wind instrument manufac-turers based in Elkhart, Indiana, since the early years of the 20th century.

Both went through a series of ownership changes and made acquisitions of smaller companies. In 2000, Selmer‘s parent company, Steinway Musical Instruments, bought United Musical Instruments, formerly known as C.G. Conn. After the acquisitin, the parent combined the two subsidiaries to create Conn-Selmer, Inc.Selmer‘s first major purchase, the Vincent Bach Corporation, came in 1961. This manufacturer of brass instruments was founded in 1918 by a Viennese immigrant born Vincent Schrotenbach. Schrotenbach had earned a degree in engineering in Germany, but decided to pursue a career in en-tertainment. After playing the trumpet in Europe, he abbreviated his name and moved to New York City during World War I. From 1914 to 1918, he advanced from the vaudeville circuit to first chair at Metropolitan Opera House and the Boston Symphony.

Company legend has it that Bach was on tour when a Pittsburgh repairman rendered his mouthpiece unusable. The mouthpiece is a small, but vital part of many brass instruments whose shape can be changed to suit diffe-rent styles of music. Orchestral players, for example, often select a broader and deeper mouthpiece than their counterparts in jazz and dance bands. Bach had a tough time finding a spare. His misfortune not only revealed a market niche, but also gave the musician an opportunity to dust off his “engineer‘s cap”. Upon his return to New York, Bach started repairing and manufacturing mouthpieces himself, while continuing to supplement his income by performing. It was not long before word of his mothpieces got of over 30 times those of competitors. Bach started making trumpets in 1924 and added trombones to his line in 1928. At the age of 71 Bach sold his company to Selmer. Production moved from New York to Elkhart four years later.

Sounds like AmericaCharles Gerard. Conn was the patriarch of musical instrument manufactu-ring in Elkhart, Indiana. In 1873, following a bar fight brawl that resulted in a split lip, C.G. Conn developed a brass mouthpiece with a rubber rim. Conn, converted an old sewing machine to a lathe and set-up a shop buil-ding these mouthpieces. In 1875, a French instrument maker named Du-pont began repairing instruments in Conn’s shop. After watching him work for a few days, Conn believed he could build his own instrument. In that same year, Colonel Conn would build the first American made cornet. By 1879, Conn moved operations into larger quarters and began making other instruments. In 1880, the town of Elkhart, Indiana became so enamored with C.G. Conn that they elected him Mayor. By 1893 his instruments were accorded the highest honors in the World’s Columbia Exposition in Chicago.Today, C.G. Conn Instruments standing for high quality american made brass instruments. The history shows the long periode of making experi-ences and getting better. But the main effort based on passion and love for music. Play and you will hear it!
