CDSS DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
1. General
The purpose of this modification is to allow the flight crew to monitor the cabin area immediately aft of the cockpit door without opening the locked cockpit door to prevent unauthorised entry into the cockpit.
This Cockpit Door Surveillance System (CDSS) consists of three cameras in the forward cabin near the flight deck door, one video monitor on the aft bulkhead of the cockpit, a control panel and the associated wiring to connect these components together (see Figure 1). Some CDSS Systems include a System Active Indicator, which is mounted in the ceiling panel adjacent to the R1 Door Camera. The CDSS is connected to DC Bus 2 and isolated by a 2.5 amp circuit breaker. It is independent from all other aircraft systems.

2 Component location and Description
This modification installs the following equipment:
2.1 LCD MONITOR P/N 8420G1-1
The LCD monitor assembly is installed to the forward inboard corner of the flight compartment P6 panel. See figure 2.
A The LCD Assembly provides the CDSS display, display control functions for
use by the flight crew, and provides a fixed enclosure to contain system components. The LCD Assembly consists of the following.
(1) An LCD Monitor with a thin film transistor display screen (6.4-inch
diagonal measure) that shows images from the video cameras.
(2) An enclosure to house the electronics assembly, which includes the following.
(a) A systems controller, which contains a video computer circuit
card that provides image selection of up to four NTSC camera inputs. The display electronics include input/output lighting and EMI protection. The computer receives video signals from the cameras and processes the signals for use by the LCD.
(b) A system power supply, which provides power to all cameras
connected to the CDSS.
CAUTION: REMOVE LCD ASSEMBLY AND BRACKET ASSEMBLY FROM WALL BEHIND CO-PILOT BEFORE LOWERING OVERHEAD CIRCUIT BREAKER PANEL P6-3. DAMAGE COULD RESULT FROM CIRCUIT BREAKER PANEL P6-3 CONTACT WITH LCD ASSEMBLY.
B The LCD Monitor has the following features.
(1) The LCD Monitor screen has an anti-glare coating and passive
backlighting. The backlighting function automatically adjusts screen brightness. A photo-diode on the face of the LCD monitor senses ambient light conditions.
(2) Four controls are located on the front of the LCD Monitor.
(a) Photo-diode light sensor. (b) Power/Failure LED Indicator, which indicates that the CDSS is
powered and operational. (c) Manual Brightness control knob. (d) Manual Contrast control knob.

2.2 CDSS CONTROL PANEL P/N 2003-031-1 or 2003-031-2
A The CDSS control panel can be installed in the P5 overhead panel or in the P8 pedestal depending upon existing configuration and space in the flight deck. See figure 3.
B The CDSS control panel contains two switches.
C “Camera System Power” controls power to all components in the system.
D “View Select” switches from one camera view to another.
2.3 CAMERA P/N 8410B1
Three surveillance cameras are installed in the forward cabin ceiling providing full visibility of the flight deck door and surrounding area. The camera is a monochrome unit fitted with an infrared illuminator which operates outside the bandwidth of the human eye. See figures 4 and 5.
A All three CDSS cameras are interchangeable.
B The camera assemblies are mounted in housings which allow the cameras to swivel (left-right, up down, and rotate) to achieve the desired field of view.
C Each camera in this installation has a 105-degree horizontal viewing angle
lens.
D Each camera has an array of infrared-emitting diodes, to illuminate the field of view in all light conditions, including complete darkness.
E The cameras have a replaceable front lens cover that protects the camera
lens and assembly from contamination.
F The flight crew can toggle between camera views by using the VIEW SELECT switch on the Control Panel.
G The cameras are supplied with 12 VDC from the LCD assembly.

3. Operation
3.1 Power Sources
A The CDSS has two sources of power.
B The main system power is supplied from 28 VDC. Power is supplied through a circuit breaker, labeled CDSS (2 1/2 Amp), located in the P6-3 circuit breaker panel.
C The Camera System Control Panel backlight overlay panel (labeled CDSS) is
supplied from the 5 VAC panel lighting circuit.
3.2 Control
A The CDSS has the following primary controls.
B Camera System Power: The Camera System Power switch is located on the Camera System Control Panel. Power to the CDSS is controlled with the power switch.
C View Select: The View Select switch is located on the Camera System Control
Panel. When activated, this switch toggles the displayed image between the views captured by Camera 1, Camera 2 and Camera 3.
D Display Brightness/Contrast: Screen brightness and contrast is automatically
controlled by sensing the ambient light conditions present in the flight compartment. Manual adjustment of screen brightness (upper knob) and contrast (lower knob) is possible using the controls provided on the face of the LCD Monitor.
E Display Sleep Mode: An automatic sleep mode turns OFF power to the LCD
Monitor after 5 minutes of inactivity (if no change in camera image is detected during this period).
(1) To restore the display image, the VIEW SELECT switch must be
pressed (LCD Monitor power is restored). The image displayed will be from the last selected camera position, if the restore action is taken within the first 120 seconds of sleep mode.
(2) If the restore action is taken after 120 seconds of sleep mode, the
display will present the Camera 1 image. Power to the cameras and the camera infrared illumination function are not interrupted during sleep mode.

3.3 Annunciation
A A power/failure LED (green illumination) provides a system status indication. The LED is located on the face of the LCD Monitor, above the manual display control knobs.

(c) Make sure that the green, light-emitting diode (LED) on the LCD monitor is steady on, which indicates that the CDSS is powered and operational. Flashing LED or the LED failing to illuminate indicates a system failure.
(d) Move the Power switch to the OFF position to turn off power to the CDSS.
(3) Camera Operation and Selection
(a) Turn the CDSS ON (ref. paragraph 2E(2)).
1) Make sure that the LCD monitor displays the view from Camera 1 (looks aft from flight compartment door).
(b) Push the View Select switch.
1) Make sure the LCD monitor displays the view from Camera 2.
(c) Push the View Select switch.

(5) LCD Monitor Automatic Dimming

(a) Select the Camera 1 view.
(b) Using a flashlight, position the light beam at the auto dim sensor located at the right side of the LCD monitor (above the green LED). Make sure the LCD monitor image brightness increases.
(c) Remove the light beam from the LCD monitor, verify that the LCD monitor image brightness decreases.
(6) Camera Adjustment and Daylight Test
(a) Prepare the Passenger Cabin
1) In the Passenger Cabin, turn on all ambient lighting and open all window shades.
2) With the Passenger Cabin in a high level light condition prepare the CDSS for use.
a Press the View Select switch until the image from the desired camera is visible.
NOTE: The following steps are best done with one person in the flight
compartment viewing the LCD monitor and a second person at the
camera location.
(b) Adjustment of the camera angle: To adjust a Camera’s angle:
NOTE: The camera’s angle is capable of being adjusted approximately 20
degrees in all directions. Use this process for adjusting the camera
angle in the below camera adjustment procedures.
1) Grasp the outer ring of the camera and push in the desired direction.
2) If necessary, the camera housing maybe removed from its mounting to allow better access to adjust the camera angle.
3) Alternatively, a reading light adjustment tool may be used to position the camera.
CAUTION: Use caution not to damage the camera with the tool.

(c) Camera 1 Adjustment and Test.
NOTE: Camera 1’s primary purpose is facial recognition of a person desiring
Flight Compartment entry and general view of the area directly aft of
the Flight Compartment Door. How the Camera 1 image is centred
and oriented on the LCD monitor screen are of secondary importance
to facial recognition and maximum coverage. The Camera 1
Adjustment procedure is intended to position the camera for facial
recognition and to maximize view coverage of the area directly aft of
the Flight Compartment Door.
1) With Camera 1 selected, adjust the Camera 1 angle so that both a Tall Person’s and a Short Person’s head are displayed on the LCD monitor screen (not necessarily centred but at least displayed), and so that the view of the area aft of the Flight Compartment door is maximized. See below for Persons’ position and height.
a Person Position: Facing forward, approximately 75 cm (30 inches) aft of the Flight Compartment door and on the aircraft centreline.
NOTE: In lieu of a person, it is acceptable to utilize a target meeting the noted height criteria to represent a person.
b Tall Person Height: Approximately 1.88 meter (6 feet 2 inches) in height.
c Short Person Height: Approximately 1.52 meter (5 feet) in height.
NOTE: In lieu of a Short Person, a Tall Person may be used, who can bend down to simulate a Short Person.
d Make sure that both a Tall Person’s and a Short Person’s head are displayed on the LCD monitor. Make sure that the image of the Tall and Short Person’s face on the LCD monitor is focused / clear enough for the Flight Crew to recognize the person’s face.

of secondary importance. The Camera 2 and 3 Adjustment procedure
is intended to maximize view coverage of the Flight Compartment
entryway area, L1 door area and R1 door area.
(d) Camera 2 Adjustment and Test.
1) With Camera 2 selected, adjust the Camera 2 up / down angle so that the maximum cabin area is visible on the LCD monitor display from the ceiling to the floor in the direction of the flight compartment entryway.
2) Adjust the side-to-side angle of Camera 2 so that the maximum cabin area is visible in the direction of the flight compartment entryway.
3) Make sure that the Camera 2 view on the LCD monitor is focused / clear enough and the coverage broad enough for the Flight Compartment to identify that a person is present in the L1 door area and the entryway leading to the flight compartment.
(e) Camera 3 Adjustment and Test.
1) With Camera 3 selected, adjust the up and down angle of Camera 3 so that the maximum cabin area can be viewed from the ceiling to the floor in the direction of the flight compartment entry way.
2) Adjust the side-to-side angle of Camera 3 so that the maximum cabin area is visible in the direction of the flight compartment entryway.
3) Make sure that the Camera 3 view on the LCD monitor is focused / clear enough and the coverage broad enough for the Flight Crew to identify that a person is present in the R1 door area and the entryway leading to the flight compartment.

(f) Combination of Views.
1) Switching through Camera 1, 2 and 3, make sure that the cameras’ overall coverage is sufficient to detect a person at any reasonable location in the Flight Compartment entry way area, the L1 door area and the R1 door area and that a person could not hide (e.g. crowded into a corner) undetected in any of these areas. A “reasonable” location is any location large enough and oriented such that it could accommodate a person.
(7) Low Level Light Test
(a) Prepare the Passenger Cabin
1) Close all entry and service doors in the Passenger Cabin. Secure all ambient lighting and close all window shades.
(b) Camera 1 Test
1) In low-light conditions with Camera 1 selected, make sure that both a Tall Person’s and a Short Person’s head are displayed on the LCD monitor. Person location and height per step E6(c). Make sure that the image of the Tall and Short Person’s face on the LCD monitor is focused / clear enough for the Flight Crew to recognize the person’s face.
(c) Camera 2 Test
1) In low-light conditions with Camera 2 selected, make sure that the Camera 2 view on the LCD monitor is focused / clear enough and the coverage broad enough for the Flight Crew to identify that a person is present in the L1 door area and the entryway leading to the flight compartment.
(d) Camera 3 Test
1) In low-light conditions with Camera 3 selected, make sure that the Camera 3 view on the LCD monitor is focused / clear enough and the coverage broad enough for the Flight Crew to identify that a person is present in the R1 door area and the entryway leading to the flight compartment.

not be manipulated. Do not move any buttons / switches on the
control panel or LCD monitor during this time.
2) With Camera 2 displayed on the LCD monitor, wait 5 minutes for the CDSS to enter “Sleep Mode”. During “Sleep Mode” the LCD monitor will remain blank.
3) After the LCD monitor has entered “Sleep Mode”, wait 1 minute.
4) Press the View Select switch. Make sure that the LCD monitor “wakes” and displays the view from Camera 2.
(b) 5 Minute Test
1) With the CDSS on, press the View Select switch until Camera 2 is displayed on the LCD monitor.
NOTE: For the LCD monitor to enter “Sleep Mode”, the CDSS controls must
not be manipulated. Do not move any buttons / switches on the
control panel or LCD monitor during this time.
2) With Camera 2 displayed on the LCD monitor, wait 5 minutes for the CDSS to enter “Sleep Mode”. During “Sleep Mode” the LCD monitor will remain blank.
3) After the CDSS has entered “Sleep Mode”, wait 5 minutes.

CAUTION: Special care must be used when cleaning the LCD Monitor screen. Do
not scrub with great force, use any abrasives, or soak the surface with cleaning solution. The screen surface coating can be damaged.
(2) Cleaning of the Camera Housing Assembly and Camera
(a) Clean the exposed surfaces of the camera housings with a cloth
moistened with any commercial water-based soap solution capable of dissolving foreign material.
CAUTION: Do not soak the surface with cleaning fluid.
(b) Wipe the camera housing with a dry, lint-free soft cloth. (c) Clean the face of the camera housings with a cloth moistened with any
commercial water-based soap solution capable of dissolving foreign material.
CAUTION: Special care must be used when cleaning the camera face. Do not
scrub with great force, use any abrasives, or soak the surface with cleaning solution.

(1) Make sure these circuit breakers are open:
(a) Circuit Breaker Panel, P6-3:

CAUTION: DO NOT TOUCH THE CONNECTOR PINS OR OTHER CONDUCTORS ON THE CAMERA CONTROL PANEL. IF YOU TOUCH THESE CONDUCTORS, ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE CAMERA CONTROL PANEL.
(2) Before you touch the Camera Control Panel Assembly, do this
task: ESDS Handling for Metal Encased Unit Installation (AMM 20-40-12 p201).
(3) Do these steps to install the Camera Control Panel Assembly:
(a) To remove the protective cover from the electrical
connector, do this task: Conductive Dust Cap and Conductor Cover Removal (AMM 20-40-12 p201).
(b) Examine the electrical connector for bent or broken pins,
dirt, and damage.
(c) Connect the electrical connector.
(d) Position the Camera Control Panel Assembly in the P5 overhead panel or P8 pedestal as appropriate.
(e) Secure the two quarter turn fasteners that secure
Camera Control Panel to the P5 overhead panel or P8 pedestal as appropriate.
(4) Remove the DO-NOT-CLOSE tags and close these circuit
breakers:
(a) Circuit Breaker Panel, P6-3:
1) CDSS
D Installation Test:
(1) Do this task: Perform all (AMMS 23-79-00 p501) tests that relate to the Camera Control Panel Assembly.
