In mid-October, Jim D'Hondt visitedthe Saskatchewan Section and was just intime to join in on their specialty Klondike Baked Beans. SaskatchewanProducts Night was held in November,where speakers were Dr. D. Malcolm,Northwest Food & Fuel Corp.: K. Bindle, Saskatchewan Research Council: I.Steen, Sid's Sunflower Seeds: and R.J.McKenzie, DRIE.
Besides being busy with their normalmonthly activities, the Toronto Section isgearing up for the 1985 National Conference. They have made a $4000.00commitment to the conference throughthe support of the opening mixer, preconference council meetings and anexhibit-based trivia game designed todraw delegates through the exhibit. Thesection also plans to boost studentactivity by supporting a student chapter which will hold separate meetingsand tours which are tailored to studentneeds and schedules.
The section will continue to sponsortwo awards for related high schoolprojects and will coordinate the selection of judges.
And finally, Mr. Gil Menezes, fromGilbey Canada, has written a radio spoton 'Alcohol Proof' and we anticipateone more radio spot before April, 1985.

The new executive from the Quebecsection organized their first activity thisyear, on October 17th 1984. Twenty-twomembers (14 students, 8 professionals)have visited the CRIQ (Centre derecherche industrielle du Quebec) andhave seen the new biotechnologylaboratory. Everyone enjoyed this visitand was pleased to understand the possibility of wO!,-king together.

holds the position of Meat and DairyConsultant with the Agri FoodDevelopment Branch of AlbertaAgriculture. The Department of FoodScience at the University of Alberta hasexperienced an increase in theirresearch compliment with the recentarrival of three postdoctoral fellows. Dr.Fiona Scriven from NottinghamUniversity is studying the transfer ofnitrites and nitrates from paper packaging materials to fresh meat products.Dr. Ali Asghar, a recent arrival from theUniversity of Daral Salaam in Tanzania,is researching calcium activated neutralprotease in beef. Dr. Ravi Biswal fromthe University of Massachusetts atAmherst is working on the development of a dehydrocooIing technique forthe preprocessing of vegetables. Dr.Nathan Oboagye, formerly a postdoctoral fellow in the Department hasbeen appointed Research Associate andis working on the development of instant potato products. During the summer of 1984, Dr. Buncha Ooraikul, Profesor in Food Science spent threemonths in Thailand. The first part of hisstay was at the University of Khan Kaenwhich is located in the north east ofThailand. There Dr. Ooraikul wasinvolved in establishing a research program for an IDRC sponsored graduateresearch project. Following this Dr.Ooraikul taught courses in Quality Control in the Food Industry and FoodProcess Engineering for the Departmentof Agro Industries at the Prince ofSangkhla University which is located insouthern Thailand.
