into a room, stood for a minute and wondered what I went in there for? I can’t remember what happened fi ve minutes ago, so hoping that I’m going to remember this speech when I get up in front of a chapel full of people is a real leap of faith.

I’ve said it so many times to my wife and co-workers I think they know it bet-ter than I do. My wife says she won’t do it for me, though.

I know I’m going to do okay, but if any-body knows any “please don’t let this guy forget his lines prayers” I’d appreciate it if you’d start saying them. Right now.

If you haven’t seen the Living Last Supper, you really should. It’s a poignant presentation and all are welcome to attend. It will be presented on Maundy Thursday, March 24, 6:30 p.m., in the Chapel. Spe-cial music and a communion service are included. It’s a spiritual evening everyone who attends should enjoy.

I’ll remember my lines . . . what are they?Last year, the Protestant Chapel put

on a presentation called the Living Last Supper with members of the chapel por-traying Jesus and the 12 apostles.

I was very impressed with it and thought I might like to be involved this year.

I told Pastor Rick Funk and he thought I would make a good Doubting Thomas. He must have a degree in psychology or something.

I have doubts about everything. I have doubts about my doubts.

I said I would do it and he sent me the speech that Doubting Thomas gives.

I started to memorize it and it seemed like it was just a little longer than War and Peace.

After two weeks of saying it over and over, I thought I had it down pretty good and went to the chapel to say it in front of Pastor Funk.

He said I did it almost perfectly and

even sent out an e-mail to the guys who are the other 11 apostles and said I had set the bar high.

I hope that’s not like a sports an-nouncer saying a pitcher has a no-hitter in the bottom of the ninth.

The last time I did any public speak-ing was in high school and that was so long ago I can’t remember what I said. Nobody booed or threw anything, so it must have been okay. But I’m a little older than I was then and I believe age has taken a few brain cells from me. How many times have I walked

“I also feel that adults today continue to enjoy his work because of the important messages he contains in his stories. Stories such as The Lorax, The Sneetches, Daisy Head Mayzie and The Butter Battle Book bring up issues such as environmental concerns, individu-ality and prejudices that are very relevant to ongoing problems in our society.” As someone who has looked forward to Dr. Seuss’s birthday all year, Sava said that his books are great to incorporate into the curriculum “not

only for the oral reading aspect, but to also get a dialogue going with the students about the important issues he covers using the characters that the students enjoy and can relate to.”

Sava added that it is important for kids to experience a variety of reading styles as well as realize how positive adults feel about reading.

Wednesday’s birthday celebra-tion was enjoyed by the entire school, with cupcakes personally

delivered at the end of the day to each class by the Cat in the Hat (a.k.a. Jane Christy, art teacher).

“All adults play an important part in teaching chil-dren to read,” Frazier said. “Adults across Kwajalein are encouraged to come in to the elementary any time to read to our kids and help them learn and grow. No one needs to wait for a special day or an invitation.”

These things are funand fun is good.— Dr. Seuss, from One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish

By Mig OwensAssistant Editor

Several Whos down in Whoville, a Cat in the Hat, a Fox in Sox, and other imaginary creatures came alive at George Seitz Elementary School Wednesday, thanks to guest readers who numbed their tongues in honor of Dr. Seuss, beloved children’s book author.

Now in its eighth year, Read Across America Day was established by the National Education Association to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss, Theodor Geisel. The event focuses on motivat-ing kids to read.

“Reading orally to children is an important technique for reading in-struction,” Dan Frazier, Kwajalein Schools superintendent, said. “They learn this practice best when they see it modeled by mature, fun-lov-ing adults.”

Frazier said he considered the day a success, with adults who play different roles all across the island coming together to demonstrate their love for reading and Dr. Seuss.

Organizing the day’s events was Sonya Sava, second grade teacher, with help from the George Seitz Elemen-tary School Parent-Teacher Organization.

“I think that the majority of parents grew up loving Dr. Seuss and relate that to their children,” Sava said.

to raise $2,023 in aid to Asian tsunami victims

By Brandon StevisonIntern

he National Honor Society/National Junior Honor Society sponsored Variety Show was held Sat-urday at the Davye Davis Multi-Purpose Room. If you didn’t catch it, you missed out on a great show. There were many performances, ranging all the way from Beka Ladd and Clarissa Holton’s tap dance to the song, Zoot Suit Riot to Chris Berlind and Brian Brewster’s Rubik’s Cube Challenge.

TThe NHS/NJHS donated all proceeds from this year’s

Variety Show to CARE for their tsunami relief project. Through ticket sales and personal donations, $2,023 was raised in order to help those in need in Southeastern Asia. Overall, the show was a huge success, said orga-nizers. “I haven’t heard one bad thing about the show,” Marcy Peterson, one of the masters of ceremonies, said. Even with a few minor slip-ups, participants had a blast showing their stuff, whether it was dancing, singing or just goofi ng off. Organizers thank everyone who came out and supported the tsunami relief and this year’s Variety Show.

Michael Graham sports his unusual outfi t.

Team America: World Police (R), Inspired by the Thunderbirds, a popular 1960s children’s series, Team America: World Police uses similarly styled, but signifi cantly more crass, marionette puppets in lieu of computer-generated images to breath life into an elite group of adventurers known as Team America. Their mission: to travel the world, root out its terrorists, and keep evil at bay. Aside from intentionally employing all of the hallmarks of standard action-adventure blockbuster formulas, from a prototypical hero to his communist arch-rival, the fi lm also boasts the occasional musical number. Team America: World Police is directed by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone.Ray (PG-13), This biopic profi les the life of legendary musician Ray Charles. Despite humble beginnings and the loss of his eyesight due to glaucoma at the age of six, Charles, depicted by Jamie Foxx, would nonetheless become an icon in both the music industry and the civil rights era. While the fi lm delves into his problems with drugs and women, the bulk of the story details his career; among the highlights of that career are 12 Grammy awards and 11 R&B chart-toppers, such as “Unchain My Heart,” “Hit the Road, Jack,” “Georgia,” “Doin’ the Mess Around,” and “Hallelujah I Just Love Her So.”Closer (R), An acclaimed stage drama about the romantic interactions of four people. Dan (Jude Law) is a writer in London who wants to fi nish a novel, but in the meantime supports himself by writing obituaries. One day he chances upon Alice (Natalie Portman), a beautiful young American expatriate, when he sees her get hit by a car. Alice immediately falls for Dan. Dan is initially enchanted with Alice, and returns her affection, but while she inspires him to write his novel (based on her life), her neediness begins to wear on him. Anna (Julia Roberts) is a photographer who is hired to take a portrait of Dan for the dust jacket of his book; Dan is attracted to her easy confi dence, and while the two of them fl irt, Anna soon (inadvertently through Dan’s playful machinations) meets Larry (Clive Owen), a dermatologist, and marries him. Dan can’t get Anna out of his mind even though she’s married, and the two become lovers, but Dan is frustrated by the fact that Anna is reluctant to leave Larry for him.Ladder 49 (PG-13), An everyday hero recalls his life as he’s forced to look death in the eye in this adventure drama. Jack Morrison (Joaquin Phoenix) is a young fi refi ghter who is a member of Ladder Company 49, led by Chief Kennedy (John Travolta), a tough but compassionate man who looks upon his fellow fi refi ghters as a family. While battling a blaze, Morrison fi nds himself trapped inside a burning building, and as Kennedy and his men try to fi nd a way to rescue him, Morrison looks back on his life and how he came to choose such a dangerous career.

Lighters banned from airport area, flightsFlame out

By Mig OwensAssistant Editor

Beginning April 14, all lighters will be prohibited from sterile areas of airports and onboard aircraft, the Transportation Security Administration announced Feb. 28. This includes butane, absorbed-fuel (Zippo-type), electric and battery-powered and novelty lighters.

According to a TSA press release, this action is in response to a provision in the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004, which was signed into law by the President on Dec. 17, and requires that bu-tane lighters be added to TSA’s Prohibited Items List.

“TSA is moving quickly to implement this provision passed by Congress,” Rear Adm. David M. Stone, USN (Ret.), Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for TSA, said. “By creating policy to add lighters to the Prohibited Items List we are closing a potential vulnerability in air travel security.”

The lighter ban will fulfi ll Congress’ intent as ex-pressed in the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act and reduce security vulnerabilities, providing one more layer of security for the nation’s

travelers, according to the TSA.Donna Groth, Supervisor, Commercial Services, Air-

port Operations Department, said signs are being posted at the Kwajalein Airport well in advance of enforcement of the ban to educate passengers.

Classifi ed as hazardous materials by the Department of Transportation, lighters are also prohibited from be-ing stowed in checked baggage. TSA will dispose of all lighters brought to checkpoints.

Nestor Licanto, TSA, Guam, said that though the light-er ban exceeds International Civil Aviation Organization standards followed by most countries, TSA requires U.S. and foreign air carriers fl ying into the U.S. from inter-national locations to comply with U.S. standards.

“TSA will request foreign government assistance in screening for prohibited items in support of air carrier compliance with U.S. requirements,” Licanto said.

“Travelers are a valuable partner in the screening process,” Stone said. “If they pack smart and avoid bringing lighters to the checkpoint, passengers can accelerate the screening process and allow us to focus on those individuals and items that may be a threat to their fl ight.”
