NOTE: 128 FBS SCHOOLS, 12 SBC SCHOOLS RANKED
Few players figure to be anticipating tonight’s Rio Grande Rivalry matchup more than New Mexico State senior tailback Larry Rose III. The last time Rose played in Albuquerque, Rose scorched New Mexico’s defense for 260 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries. But UNM won that game and Rose missed last season’s 32-31 Aggies win in Las Cruces with an injury.
New Mexico’s defense figures to be well-aware of Rose, but NMSU’s offense has already shown it has plenty of other weapons this season. Quar-terback Tyler Rogers, running back Jason Huntley and wideout Jaleel Scott all put up big numbers in last week’s 37-31 loss at Arizona State.
The Aggies’ defense had its moments against ASU, led by linebacker Dalton Herrington (13 tack-les). The Sun Devils had just 79 rushing yards, but UNM’s rushing game is much more formidable.

SCOUTING THE AGGIES
AGGIE NOTES>>> New Mexico State’s defense turned
up the pressure to great effect in last week’s opener at Arizona State. Paced by linebacker/safety Malik Demby, the Aggies posted seven sacks and 14 tackles for loss. Those totals rank first and second, respectively, among FBS teams. By com-parison, NMSU posted 11 sacks all of last season, ranking 124th nationally. Demby had 2.0 sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss. The latter total ranks him No. 1 nationally.
>>> The Aggies come to Albuquerque relatively healthy. Defensive back Jaden Wright (hamstring) is questionable, but DB DeMarcus Owens (hamstring) and wideout Johnathan Boone (ankle), who missed the ASU game, are expected to play.
>>> QB Tyler Rogers posted career highs for both pass attampts (57) and completions (40) against ASU. He ranks 11th nationally with 398 passing yards.
>>> The UNM offense took a significant hit last week, both physically and emotion-ally, when senior slot receiver Emmanuel Harris was diagnosed with season-ending torn knee ligaments. “It was one of the toughest things I’ve had to deal with,” coach Bob Davie said, “because (Harris) loves football so much.”
>>> The Lobos and the Aggies have split their last eight meetings. NMSU hasn’t had the better of a nine-game stretch against UNM since going 6-3 from 1960-68.
>>> UNM opened defense of its 2016 national rushing title with 259 yards, good for the No. 26 spot nationally, last week against Abilene Christian.
>>> Redshirt freshman safety Kameron Miller is the only UNM player from Las Cruces on the 2017 roster.
LOBO NOTES
SCOUTING THE LOBOS
Last year in Las Cruces, two UNM turnovers — a fumble and an interception — resulted in 10 New Mexico State points and ultimately cost the Lobos the game. UNM committed two turnovers last week in a 38-14 victory over Abilene Christian, and a clean sheet tonight would be helpful. The Lobos never got the dive element of their base triple option offense untracked against ACU, and head coach Bob Davie and offensive line coach Saga Tuitele are still tinkering with the lineup. Senior left tackle Avery Jordan is a go tonight after missing most of the Abilene Christian game due to illness. Senior Ray Baylor likely will make the first start of his career at left guard. After giving up a 99-yard touchdown drive to ACU on the Wildcats’ first offensive possession, the predominantly young UNM defense was solid. But New Mexico State presents a far greater challenge.
