VIRTUAL CINEMA Library updated on a continual basis. To access our growing selection of independent films and documentaries available to stream from home, go to www.timeandspace.org/virtual-cinema.Movie: FAUST (1994)Jan Svankmajer’s Faust is a rendering of the infamous Dr. Faustus fable of temptation and damnation. Borrowing freely from both Mar-lowe and Goethe and ancient folktales and timeless myths, the story follows a lonely Czech businessman who sells his soul to the devil in return for 24 years of self-indulgence. A visually fantastic combina-tion of live-action, claymation, puppet theatre, stop-motion animation, and other special effects, Svankmajer creates an unsettling universe presided over by diabolic life-size marionettes and haunted by sinister human messengers from hell. In Czech with subtitles. 1994. 1h37m.Movie: HARRY CHAPIN: WHEN IN DOUBT, DO SOMETHINGThe inspiring story of Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Harry Chapin (“Cat’s in the Cradle”). Chapin sold over 16 million albums and was one of his generation’s most beloved artists and activists who spent his fame and fortune trying to end world hunger before his tragic passing. The film features Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Pete Seeger, Sir Bob Geldof, Kenny Rogers, Graham Nash, Pat Benatar, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Robert Lamm, Richie Havens, and Harry Belafonte reflecting on Chapin’s larger-than-life impact on music and the world. 2020. 1h33m.Movie: HERB ALPERT IS. . .Herb Alpert was a shy third grader when his music appreciation teacher arranged instruments on a table and encouraged her students to experiment. The 8-year-old picked up a trumpet and effectively found his voice. In 1966, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass outsold the Beatles two to one. Between 1966 and 2014, the musician who wed Dixieland and mariachi styles with jazz and pop, won nine Gram-mys, a testament to his virtuosity and enduring appeal. 2020. 1h53m.Movie: I AM WOMAN1966. Helen Reddy arrives in New York with her three-year-old daugh-ter, a suitcase and $230 in her pocket. She had been told she’d won a recording contract, but the record company promptly dashes her hopes by telling her it has enough female stars and suggests she has fun in New York before returning home to Australia. Helen, without a visa, decides to stay in New York anyway and pursue a singing career, struggling to make ends meet and provide for her daughter. There she befriends legendary rock journalist Lillian Roxon, who be-comes her closest confident. Lillian inspires her to write and sing the iconic song “I Am Woman” which becomes the anthem for the second wave feminist movement and galvanizes a generation of women to fight for change. 2019. 1h56m.Movie: LA HAINE (1995)New restoration. Mathieu Kassovitz took the film world by storm with La Haine, a gritty, unsettling, and visually explosive look at the racial and cultural volatility in modern-day France, specifically the low-

TSL in October: Up to Date and On The Fly!Spontaneous special events – indoor, outdoor, and virtual – are a like-lihood this month at TSL, weather permitting and safety a must. Which way’s the wind blowing? What are TSL’s plans for the Parking Lot Live series? What’s for sale in the Stuff Store? There’s always something cooking at the old bread factory, so keep up to date by regularly checking our website: www.timeandspace.org. In addition, we recom-mend you sign up for our weekly e-blast, which you may do in the top-right corner of our website or by e-mailing [email protected]. Want more? Follow TSL on Instagram: @tsl_hudson.

TSL Fundraiser: 10.10.2020Saturday, October 10 at 5:45pm. Rain Date: Sunday, 10/11. When the going gets tough, Linda & Claudia keep going. Join us for a fund-raising event in the parking lot to sustain the work of TSL in the time of COVID-19. Simple supper of chili (meat and vegetarian) and corn-bread with treats and libations. Followed by an original performance by TSL founders Linda Mussmann and Claudia Bruce. Tickets: $100. Dress for cooler temperatures. RSVP online at www.timeandspace.org or by e-mail at [email protected].

TSL SOLAR SWITCH: Ready: From September 21–23, Kasselman Solar of Albany installed a solar array of 78 panels on the roof. A week later the inspector came and approved the installation. The final check has been written and is waiting to be handed over when the go-ahead from National Grid comes to make the switch. It’s very exciting to be able to complete this project and take advantage of solar technology for our electricity needs. We did it with your steady support. Thank you for your help at every step of the way. What a year it’s been! All the more reason to cel-ebrate this achievement. TSL has furnished the last $9,000 for the panels out of our general operating funds. If you would like to contribute to the last bit of the bill for TSL’s Solar Campaign, you may do so by mail, over the phone, or at www.timeandspace.org/support.

Art Exhibit: THE EARL SHOW – New Dates & New Works Added!Did you miss The Earl Show? Now’s your chance! The retrospective of Hudson-based outsider artist Earl Swanigan (1964–2019) has been extended through October 31 (special closing event TBA). Al-ready saw it? See it again! The exhibit now features more than thirty additional works. As the size and scope of The Earl Show expands, TSL is working to publish a book on the retrospective to further docu-ment the artist’s works and life story. Curated by Linda Mussmann and Kevin Gilligan in TSL’s renovated indoor gallery, the show makes available many of Earl’s previously unseen works – including paintings, sculpture, furniture, and archival materials – from a variety of private collections. Certain works for sale. Gallery tours every Thursday through Sunday from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. Free admission. Masks required. Capacity limited. Catalogue of works and tour registration at www.timeandspace.org.

TSL STUFF STORE: Basement BazaarSpecial Sale: Sunday, October 11 from 2:00pm–5:00pmAntiques, collectibles, furniture, knick knacks, and other cool things. Not to mention loads of books, records, CDs, DVDs, and blu-rays. All

income banlieue districts on Paris’s outskirts. Aimlessly passing their days in the concrete environs of their dead-end suburbia, Vinz (Vin-cent Cassel), Hubert (Hubert Koundé), and Saïd (Saïd Taghmaoui) – a Jew, an African, and an Arab – give human faces to France’s immigrant populations, their bristling resentment at their marginaliza-tion, slowly simmering until it reaches a climactic boiling point. A work of tough beauty, La Haine is a landmark of contemporary French cinema and a gripping reflection of its country’s ongoing identity crisis. In French with subtitles. 1995. 1h37m.Movie: MAJOR ARCANADink (Ujon Tokarski) is an itinerant carpenter with a reputation for drunkenness and duplicity. After a long absence he returns to Ver-mont, newly sober, to take possession of his father’s estate: a derelict trailer, $15K hidden in a wall vent, and fifty-two acres of wilderness. He soon crosses paths with Sierra (Tara Summers), a cashier and Tarot card reader with whom he shares a complicated past, and sets out to prove to her that he’s turned his life around. Inspired by the beauty of his new land, Dink cuts down a stand of pine trees and sets to the arduous task of building a timber-frame log cabin by hand. Meanwhile, Dink’s mother, Jean (Lane Bradbury), hounds him for the small inheritance she believes is rightfully hers. 2020. 1h21m.Movie: MARTIN EDENAdapted from a 1909 novel by Jack London yet set in a provocatively unspecified moment in Italy’s history, Martin Eden is a passionate and enthralling narrative fresco in the tradition of the great Italian classics. Martin (played by the marvelously committed Luca Marinelli) is a self-taught proletarian with artistic aspirations who hopes that his dreams of becoming a writer will help him rise above his station and marry a wealthy young university student (Jessica Cressy). The dissatisfac-tions of working-class toil and bourgeois success lead to political awakening and destructive anxiety in this enveloping, superbly mounted bildungsroman. Winner of the Best Actor prize at the Venice Film Festival and the Platform Prize at the Toronto International Film Festival. In Italian with subtitles. 2019. 2h9m.Movie: NATIVE SON (1951)One of the most controversial novels of its day, Richard Wright’s Native Son (1940) exposed the injustices of urban African-American life, witnessed through the eyes of Bigger Thomas, whose violent tendencies and moral confusion were the natural result of a lifetime of deprivation. In prison for murder and sentenced to death, Thomas reflects on the circumstances that led to his fate. Kino Lorber presents a new restoration of the 1951 film version of the novel, directed by Pierre Chenal and starring Richard Wright himself as Bigger Thomas. The film is preceded by a special introduction by film historians Eddie Muller (Film Noir Foundation) and Jacqueline Najima Stewart (co-curator of Kino Lorber’s Pioneers of African-American Cinema collection), courtesy of Turner Classic Movies. 1951. 1h48m.Movie: REBUILDING PARADISEOn the morning of Nov. 8, 2018, a devastating firestorm engulfed the picturesque city of Paradise, California. By the time the Camp Fire was extinguished, it had killed 85 people, displaced 50,000 residents and destroyed 95% of local structures. It was the deadliest U.S. fire

in 100 years — and the worst ever in California’s history. Rebuilding Paradise, from Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard, is a moving story of resilience in the face of tragedy, as a community rav-aged by disaster comes together to recover what was lost and begin the important task of rebuilding. 2020. 1h31m.Movie: THE DONUT KINGThe story of Ted, the Donut King, is one of fate, love, survival, hard knocks, and redemption. It’s the rags to riches story of a refugee escaping Cambodia, arriving in America in 1975, and building an unlikely multi-million dollar empire baking America’s favorite pastry, the donut. Ted sponsored hundreds of visas for incoming refugees and helped them get on their feet teaching them the ways of the donut business. By 1979 he was living the American Dream. But, in life, great rise can come with great falls. 2020. 1h34m.Movie: THIS IS NOT A MOVIEFor more than 40 years, journalist Robert Fisk has reported on some of the most violent and divisive conflicts in the world. Yung Chang’s This Is Not a Movie captures Fisk in action, feet on the ground, note-book in hand, as he travels into landscapes devastated by war, ferret-ing out the facts and firing reports back home to reach an audience of millions. The process of translating raw experience into incisive and passionate dispatches requires the determination to see things first-hand and the tenacity to say what others won’t. In his relentless pursuit of the facts, Fisk has attracted his share of controversy. But in spite of the danger, he has continued to cover stories as they unfold, talking directly to the people involved. In an era of fake news, when journalists are dubbed “the enemies of the people,” Fisk’s resolve to document reality has become an obsessive war to speak the truth. In English and Arabic with subtitles. 2019. 1h46m.Movie: WHITE RIOTBritain, late-1970s. Punk is exploding. The country is deeply divided over immigration. The National Front, a far-right and fascist politi-cal party, is gaining strength as politicians like Enoch Powell push a xenophobic agenda. Outraged by a racist speech from Eric Clapton, music photographer Red Saunders writes a letter to the music press, calling for rock to be a force against racism. A team bands together to create Rock Against Racism (RAR) and the fanzine Temporary Hoarding. Speaking directly to the youth, Temporary Hoarding reports stories and issues that the mainstream British media ignores, like immigration, the Catholic side of the Northern Ireland conflict, and the police’s controversial “suspected persons” powers. The National Front strikes back, committing acts of violence against RAR supporters and petrol-bombing their HQ. Despite this, RAR becomes a grassroots youth movement. The Clash, Steel Pulse, Tom Robinson, and other top bands of the day jump on board. 2019. 1h24m.
