  • Stewardship of Prayer We have all been given the gift to serve our Lord. One way to serve our Lord is through the stewardship of prayer. Our archbishop has given us a prayer to use as we prayerfully consider giving to the One Faith, One Hope, One Love Campaign.

Good and gracious God, we thank you for the rich blessings you have showered on our Archdiocese and its people, from generation to generation. United in ONE FAITH, may we respond with joy and generosity to the demands of the Gospel in our time and for our future. Gathered in ONE HOPE, may we find the courage for sacrificial giving, knowing that you sustain us beyond all our fears and anxieties. Driven by ONE LOVE, and guided by your grace, may we build up the living Church, the Body of Christ, here in this time and this place. Humbly we ask your help, Father, for without you we can do nothing. In the Name of Jesus Christ, your Son, our Savior, send us your Holy Spirit of Faith, Hope, and Love to prosper the work of our hands. Through the intercession of Saint Francis de Sales, our Archdiocesan patron, and entrusting ourselves to the motherly care of Mary, Star of the New Evangelization, we make our prayer.

    Amen? Amen.

    THE READINGS FOR THIS WEEK

    NO SEPA R ATION Genesis 2:18-24 Psalm 128:1-6 Hebrews 2:9-11 Mark 10:2-16

“Therefore let no man separate what God has joined.” – Mark 10:9

Jesus does not want husband and wife to be separated. Also, He became indignant at His disciples for separating some children from Him (Mk 10:14). Furthermore, Jesus does not want parents separated from their children. Let no overtime, lifestyle, day care, extra-curricular activities, school, or other responsibilities separate what God has joined together. Moreover, Jesus does not want family members separated from each other by TV, overwork, communication breakdown, and independent lifestyles. Jesus even refuses to separate Christians from their enemies (see Mt 13:30).

The Lord does not want sexual relations separated from marriage. In addition, Jesus, the Author of Life (Acts 3:15), does not want sperm and egg separated through contraception or sterilization. He does not want marriage separate from childbearing, nor child-bearing separated from making these children disciples for Jesus. The Lord abhors the separation of a newly created human being from the womb of its mother. Let no one separate by abortion baby from mother.

Finally, let no one separate Christians from one another. The Lord has joined us to Him and to one another in Baptism (1 Cor 12:13). We are brothers and sisters in Him. We must live in real Christian community and not in worldly isolation and individual-ism. Let nothing separate what God has joined.

    • Prayer: Father, by my life may I never choose separation from You forever (see Mt 25:32).

    • Promise: “Indeed, it was fitting that when bringing many sons to glory God, for Whom and through Whom all things

exist, should make their Leader in the work of salvation

    perfect through suffering.” —Hebrews 2:10

    • Praise: Praise the Risen Jesus, Whose death and resurrection has enabled us to remain unified!

    The Pastor’s Corner

  • St. Thérèse of Lisieux (1873-1897)“I prefer the monotony of obscure sacrifice to all ecstasies. To pick up a pin for love can convert a soul.” These are the words of Thérèse of the Child Jesus, a Carmelite nun called the “Little Flower,” who lived a cloistered life of obscurity in the convent of Lisieux, France. And her preference for hidden sacrifice did indeed convert souls. Few saints of God are more popular than this young nun. Her autobiog-raphy, The Story of a Soul, is read and loved throughout the world. Thérèse Martin entered the convent at the age of 15 and died in 1897 at the age of 24. She was canon-ized in 1925, and two years later she and St. Francis Xavier were declared co-patrons of the missions.

Life in a Carmelite convent is indeed uneventful and con-sists mainly of prayer and hard domestic work. But Thérèse possessed that holy insight that redeems the time, however dull that time may be. She saw in quiet suffering redemptive suffer-ing, suffering that was indeed her apostolate. Thérèse said she came to the Carmel convent “to save souls and pray for priests.” And shortly before she died, she wrote: “I want to spend my heaven doing good on earth.”

On October 19, 1997, Pope John Paul II proclaimed her a Doctor of the Church, the third woman to be so recognized, in light of her holiness and the influence on the Church of her teaching on spirituality. Her parents, Louis and Zélie were beatified in 2008. – www.americancatholic.org

Can someone earn heaven by good works? No. No man can gain heaven merely by his own efforts. e fact that we are saved is God’s grace, pure and simple, which nevertheless demands the free cooperation of the individual. [2006-2001, 2025-2027]

Although it is grace and faith through which we are saved, nevertheless, our good works ought to show the love produced by God’s action in us. (YOUCAT question 341)

  • PRESCHOOL: I visited the preschoolers in the new

    cafeteria during their lunch

time. They were a very joyful

    bunch, (photo, left) and they

were doing a good job of

    eating their lunches! I am

so blessed to have a school.

The children are such a joy to

visit and get to know. 1 UNDERGROUND: Jason Evert came to Cincinnati and did a free show on chastity for teens at the

    Underground. Some of our

    parishioners (photo, right)

were able to attend. The pro-

    gram included music, prayer

and talks for them on how

to live a chaste life in today’s

    world. It was very well

    attended, and the kids said

they got a lot out of the program. 1 PARISH RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM (PREP): Our Director of Religious Education, Cody Egner, had his first meeting (photo, below)

with our PREP families. We are fortunate to have such good vol-

unteer catechists to teach the children in our PREP classes. If

your child is attending a public school and you would like for

him or her to take classes to be formed in the faith, please email

Cody at [email protected]. Second graders will

soon start preparing for the Sacrament of Reconciliation and

First Communion. Please email Cody with any questions. 1

AIR CONDITIONER: On Sept. 15, work began (photo, left) on our long-awaited new air-condi-

tioning unit. The unit will cool both

the church and the rectory. We had

    hoped to have the air-conditioning

    replaced earlier in the summer;

    however, there were zoning problems

that required us to relocate the unit

to another spot. Due to this reloca-

tion, other parts had to be ordered that

delayed the unit’s construction. I want to thank all for being

patient and cooperative during this delay and construction. 1

POPE FRANCIS: The pope arrived for his visit to America on Sept. 23. Some of our parishioners were able to go downtown

to Fountain Square (photo, below) and watch the live broadcast

of the pope’s address to Congress.

1 FLEA MARKET THANK-YOU: We got our flea market crew together

for a thank-you dinner at the Rusty

Bucket (photo, below). Marta and I

are so grateful for the help all of

    our volunteers gave us during

    the setup and festival weekend.

We had another very successful year! We also want to thank

all of the parishioners and friends who donated items and

helped make it such a big success. 1 CONGRATULATIONS! We had two weddings on Sept. 19. Justin Wagner and Abigail

Clark (photo, below left) celebrated the Sacrament of Marriage.

Fr. Doug Taylor presided over the wedding of Josh Miller and

Caroline Rettig (photo, above right). 1 FAMILY WEDDING: I had another nephew get married a couple of weekends ago.

Matt Bengel and Kara Schmit (photo, below) celebrated the

    Sacrament of Marriage at

    St. Francis de Sales Church.

Matt is the son of parish-

    ioners Mark and my sister

    Theresa Bengel. My family

    will be celebrating five

    weddings within a year. Two

    down, three to go. Congratula-

    tions, Matt and Kara!

  • Cookies Needed As part of the Kairos Prison Ministry, there is an upcoming retreat for the men in Lucasville State Penitentiary. is four-day program, modeled on the Catholic Cursillo, is a life-changing, soul-saving experience for many of these men who may have never had Christ in their lives.

It is a Kairos tradition to give every inmate and prison employee two dozen home-baked, prayed-over cookies. That’s 48,000 cookies.

You are invited to be a part of the Kairos Prison Ministry by baking cookies. Cookie bags, with specific instructions, will be available after this weekend’s Masses. The baked cookies need to be dropped off in the back of church next weekend by 11:00 on Sunday, Oct. 11. Parishioner Jerry Davis, who is involved in this ministry, will be delivering our cookies to Lucasville.

Last week we kicked off our participation in the Archdiocesan $130 million campaign One FaiTh, One hOPe, One LOve. The goal set for our parish is $833,000. Our plan is to meet this goal with pledges from our parishioners over a five-year period. In addition, 20% of each parishioner’s gift will be returned to the parish and 60% once we exceed our goal. We are well over 57% of our goal. Please prayerfully consider your response when contacted. Thank you.

STEWARDSHIP MONTH The month of October is dedicated to a renewal of our stewardship commitment to God through St. Cecilia Parish. “How shall I make a return to the Lord, for all the good he has done for me?” – Psalm 116

This is about our response to the goodness of God that we have enjoyed and, how we will respond, how we have responded, and how we are responding to God, for all His benefits toward us. The question in Psalm 116 is about our response to the goodness of God we enjoy.

But, in our response to God’s goodness, whatever we do, we can never repay Him equally or in full, because we are imperfect responders to a perfect Giver! As we reflect on God’s goodness and our imperfection, we become more and more aware that we need to respond to God’s goodness. It is imperative to listen to Him and obey Him and trust His Son who died for us.

One way is through obedient service. Either we are serving God or we’re serving sin. We certainly are not doing both at the same time. When we consider all the vast blessings of God, both physical and spiritual — our response should be obvious, I SHOULD BE SERVING HIM.

This week we concentrate on our Stewardship of Prayer. When we devote time to prayer, we deepen our relationship with God and become better prepared to offer ourselves in service to God and others. Many of us approach prayer as a tool to use only when we want or need something from God, simply trying to process a business transaction.

Ask yourself, do I thank God more than I ask God for a deal? Am I willing to make a commitment to prioritize prayer? Do I participate fully at Mass? Do I take time to read and contemplate the scriptures? Do I take advantage of the many parish devotions? the Rosary? Holy Hour? Do I pray before meals ... in the morning ... before retiring to bed? Do I listen to Him when he speaks to me? Do I thank God? Do I ask God what I can do to advance His Kingdom?

Let us pray that we will make Stewardship of Prayer a way of life with God. “Because of our faith in You, O Lord, we acknowledge You as the source of all we have and all we are.

Help us place You, our loving Creator, first in our lives by becoming more prayerful.”
