One hour prior, during filming of the final scene, the cast grew more and more emotional with each passing take. Then it came time for the “fun run,” an improvised take which signifies that it’s time to move on to the next scene. In this case however, it was the very last take of the series. On camera, a scripted hug that began between Leslie Knope and Donna Meagle quickly morphed into an impromptu PARKS & RECREATION – “That’s a Wrap!” 1 loving group embrace as every other cast member joined in. That hug is symbolic of the relationships between every person on the show, both in front of and behind the camera. The cast and crew of Parks are a family, and going to work didn’t ever feel like going to work. After 6 years, 7 seasons, and 125 episodes, Parks and Recreation will end its epic run this January. Parks deserves a memorable send-off, and beyond the mini-series-like airing schedule over a period of only six weeks, NBC allowed Mike and company a tremendous amount of creative freedom for the final 13 episodes. For example, the entire season takes place in the year 2017… which may not seem too far ahead in time, but the writers took full advantage of what a comedic take on “the future” would look like. Let’s just say that it involves drones, Gryzzl Tablets, and a lot of outrageous commentary on how celebrity culture will be very different two years from now. Beyond the futuristic backdrop, fans can expect to find their favorite Pawneeans in the funniest and most bizarre situations yet. JANUARY 2015

On Tuesday November 11th CBS Entertainment Diversity hosted the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media’s “See Jane Salon” at Carlas Café on the CBS Studio Center Lot. It was the last installment of four salon events held throughout 2014.

“See Jane Salons” are a series of panels organized with the purpose of engaging, educating and influencing the need to improve gender balance, reduce stereotyping and create diverse female characters in Film and Television.

The event was attended by more than 150 leading influencers in the entertainment industry and corporate landscape. The theme of the final Salon was “Reel vs. Real Diversity in Hollywood: Influencers On-Screen and Behind-the Scenes.” The panel was moderated by CBS Vice President of Entertainment Diversity & Communications, Tiffany Smith-Anoa’i and focused on ways

in which leaders in the industry can change the landscape in media and portray diverse cultures, values and different perspectives both in front of and behind the camera.

Panelists included Sara Hess, Co-Executive Producer, Orange is the New Black; Sil Lai Abrams, Founder & CEO, Truth in Reality; Daisy Auger-Dominguez, Vice President, Talent Acquisition and Organization & Workforce Diversity, Disney ABC; California Supreme Court Justice and Author, Eileen Moore; Chris Nee, Creator, Doc McStuffins; Kenya Barris, Creator, Black-ish; Jennie Snyder Urman, Executive Producer, Jane the Virgin; and Jenni Gold, Founder, Gold Pictures & Director, CinemAbility. Each panelists shared their best practices on how they are affecting real change and expanding the concept of diversity and inclusion beyond acceptance or tolerance.

“It was an honor to moderate such a distinguished panel of professionals. The audience left with the inspiration to impact the industry and incorporate more diversity in their everyday professional lives.” said Smith-Anoa’i.

The Geena Davis Institue on Gender in Media is a coalition partner of CBS Entertainment and the organization has always praised CBS for the strong female characters on our programming. Their motto is “If she can see it, she can be it.”

The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media was founded by Academy Award®

winning actress Geena Davis. It is the is the only research-based organization working with media and entertainment companies with cutting edge research, education, and advocacy programs to dramatically improve how girls and women are reflected in media targeting children 11 and under.

JANUARY 2015

2014 La supplier Diversity networking eventOn November 20, 2014, CBS Corporation

hosted its annual Supplier Diversity Outreach Event at CBS Studio Center in Studio City, CA. The event was keynoted by Leslie Moonves, President & CEO of CBS Corporation. The event also featured an expo and targeted matchmaker meetings between more than 30 minority and women-owned suppliers and representatives from CBS business units, as well as guests from other entertainment industry companies.

Clara’s Kids

For the last two decades, CBS Law Department employee Clara Schwartz, in conjunction with the Studio, has hosted an annual holiday party for the students of Middleton Primary Center, located in Huntington Park. The trip to the Studio is quite a treat for the children, as well as for the staff here on the lot as they serenade us with Christmas carols and Chanukah songs.

4

The Studio provides the kids with a bare tree for them to decorate with their handmade ornaments, cookies and milk, and of course Santa and an elf or two are in attendance. And despite the sunny skies and warm weather, thanks to our SFX department it’s snowing here when they arrive! This adventure is presented to the children as an exchange of gifts with Santa;

they give Mr. Klaus two gifts, the gift of songs and the ornaments they create, and of course they don’t leave here without a little something from Santa!

The event was managed and coordinated by Natalie Robinson, Director of CBS Strategic Sourcing & Supplier Diversity and Sandra Reed-Funnell, from CBS Studio Center. Tom Hogan, SVP & Chief Procurement Officer, CBS Strategic Sourcing emceed the event. Also in the program were remarks from CBS Executives, including Mike Klausman, President of CBS Studio Center & SVP of West Coast Operations, Tiffany Smith-Anoa’i, VP Diversity & Communications and Josie

Thomas, EVP & Chief Diversity Officer. The CBS Diverse Supplier Recognition

Award was presented to HighPoint Solutions, Inc, a Hispanic-owned business who provides networking and other IT-related equipment. Wayne Wyman, CBS Director of Facilities Operations at CBS Television City, was presented with the CBS Internal Advocate Recognition Award.

be anything less than crazy). Beloved old faces will return, and there’s still some room left for hilarious newcomers and surprise guest stars.

The past few weeks have been fun, yet challenging, as ending a series is no easy feat. It was the noble duty of Michael Schur and a room full of talented writers to ensure that each beloved character has a satisfying ending to their story. The script was not widely released and some pages were omitted, indicating secret scenes and shocking moments to look forward to, along with goodbyes to our friends that are guaranteed to make you sniffle and sob.

As the two weeks of shooting the finale came to a close, people from every department crowded together on set one last time to say goodbye to Pawnee, Indiana. Following the group hug were the tears. And then the speeches. And then the champagne, and then the celebrations. Referencing the lifelong friendships made along this six-year journey, the cast closed out the series wrap party by appropriately singing the classic Mouserat goodbye song “5000 Candles in the Wind.”
