Well, autumn is here and P.E.O. is off with a bang in Utah. The Fall Scholarship Fundraiser, “A Night Out,” hosted by Chapters R and V was a huge success! Utah is a state that is not only supportive of our philanthropies but also each other. I think we can be very proud of that. It doesn’t matter if our events are large or small, we can count on our sisters to be behind us. I would like to thank my chapter, Chapter Z, for holding a lovely reception for me at the Riverside Country Club in Provo and for the beautiful quilt that I will always treasure. We had so much fun! Thanks also to those of you who attended or sent cards and emails. You guys are the best! Ladies, please don’t forget to be looking for scholarship candidates. The deadlines for applications for the various philanthropies are listed at the end of each newsletter and on the “AtAGlance” sheets that can be found in the Download Center on the website, so you will want to keep these dates in mind. Hello Sisters! Well, autumn is here and P.E.O. is off with a bang in Utah. The Fall Scholarship Fundraiser, “A Night Out,” hosted by Chapters R and V was a huge success! Utah is a state that is not only supportive of our philanthropies but also each other. I think we can be very proud of that. Needs Your Talents and Interests By Nancy Williams, Y Utah State Chapter Vice President The state board refers to the results of the Talent and Interest Survey frequently when looking for women to help with various state events, to advise us in needed areas of expertise or to serve on state committees. Involvement beyond your chapter will enrich you and your chapter and deepen your experience of our sisterhood. Working with sisters from other chapters toward a common goal is very rewarding.
Please help us out by participating in our electronic "Talent and Interest Survey.” Even if you have filled one out in previous years, please complete the 2014 survey with your current interests. Dues Increase to Help Fund Convention by Therese J. Milad, Carolyn Benson, and Sandra Berglund The Utah State Finance Committee met and discussed the merits of a dues increase to be proposed at next year's Convention. Such an increase will allow P.E.O. to do away with chapter fundraising for the purpose of hostessing Convention. The Finance Committee felt that the burden of fundraising as well as putting on a convention was onerous and needed a change. It was felt that the cost of hostessing Convention should be shared by all of the Utah members. Based on the timing of the vote and fiscal year, the first Convention to be impacted by this change would be 2017. The secondary reason for a dues increase is for the general budget. Up until a few years ago, the State Board ran a budget surplus. But with expenses going up, membership decreasing and calendar sales dwindling due to smartphones and the like, there is now a budget deficit. Please know that your State Board is fiscally responsible with your money. The budget has been carefully prepared to minimize expenses and maximize results and is followed to the penny. There are no frivolous expenses incurred and in most instances, State Board members pay for way too much out of their pockets with auto and gas costs. The State Finance Committee is sensitive to that and wants to make sure that the budget reflects actual expenses incurred so that future board members who may not be as financially set can serve as well. Sisters Honor President at Tea By Gretchen Freeman, Z State P.E.O. President Gayle Lichti was honored on Saturday, September 20 with the President's Tea at the Riverside Country Club in Provo. Around 65 P.E.O. sisters from chapters throughout the state attended to honor Gayle for her presidency and sample the crepe buffet, sandwiches, fruit and drinks.The tea was hosted by Gayle's sisters in Chapter Z (Utah Valley) who asked guests to sign a handmade autograph quilt for her. Gayle enjoyed her special afternoon which offered a chance to connect with sisters, fellow board members and past presidents. "I'm so grateful to my Chapter Z sisters for planning such a wonderful event and for the gift of a signed quilt to preserve the memories. I'm honored to be the Utah P.E.O. president."

Utah College Fair to Include Cottey By Ann Wakefield, Chapter AH This year, Cottey College will be represented at the Utah College Fair. If you know someone interested in Cottey, the fair will be a great opportunity to get information about the college, student life and degree programs. Cottey alumnae will be present to answer questions. Details about the college fair follow. Top of Utah Offers Quilts, Boutique By Kathy Johnson, Chapter AH Top of Utah Reciprocity (Tour) and Chapter AH invite you to share the talents of Utah P.E.O.s through quilts All P.E.O.s, BILs, friends, and community members welcome! The quilts will be displayed at the Bountiful Community Church October 11, 150 N. 400 East, Bountiful 84010 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The $5 entrance fee includes an opportunity to take home a quilt or basket of quilting goodies. Additional opportunities may be purchased for $1 each. All proceeds will go to the P.E.O. Scholarships Guides will be available to share information about the different quilting styles and techniques. There will be a boutique offering handmade items at the show. If you have a quilt you would like to display contact us. The hanging fee is $5, the quilt needs a

standard 3inch show sleeve and a short history written or typed on a 3by5 card. Be sure to include the quilt’s name, the piecer and the quilter. P.E.O. Calendars for Sale Again By Brenda Boren Treasurer, Utah State Chapter P.E.O. Utah State Chapter is again offering wall and pocket calendars — at last year's prices. Buy lots! Sell them to friends. Give them as gifts. Hang them on your office walls. Pull them out of your handbags in public places so that people will see them and ask who we are. All profits go to your Utah State Chapter’s operating expenses. Your chapter president has an order form and your treasurer will mail one check payable to Utah State Chapter P.E.O. to The Calendar Girls (Fran Fouts and Karen Iversen). Wall calendars are $7 each and pocket calendars are $4 each. Order forms are also available in What’s Happening at www.peoutah.org. Top of Utah Reciprocity orders are due October 4 for pickup at the Saturday, October 11 reciprocity meeting. Salt Lake Area Reciprocity orders are due November 6 for pickup at the Thursday, November 13 reciprocity meeting. All other chapter orders are due November 6. Amber Barron is Utah’s STAR Recipient By Patti Washburn, R STAR Scholarship Chairman In 201314, 350 scholarships were awarded out of 1,891 applicants for a STAR Scholarship. I am proud and delighted to announce that Amber Barron, a 2014 senior at Riverton High School, is one of those recipients. She is attending the University of Utah this fall. Amber is an amazing young woman. Her goal is to earn a Utah P.E.O. Sister to Sister News October 2014 Page 5 of 7
B.S. and M.S. in mechanical engineering with an emphasis in aerospace, and eventually work for NASA. Her volunteer experiences include grant writer and project director of Smart Women Money, STEM speaker at the Girl Scouts of the USA's National Convention, and a speaker at International Women's Day 2011. Her academic achievements include being a National Carson Scholar three years in a row, a bronze medalist at the International Sustainable World Project Olympiad, and the 2010 and 2011 "Outstanding Leadership" Award at Jordan School District's MESA Recognition Banquet. Amber is not only all this but is a poised, beautiful young women recently crowned Miss Riverton! These are just a few of Amber's many accomplishments. We want to congratulate Chapter AL for recognizing this outstanding young woman and thank Jeanne Liken, of Chapter AM, for working with them to promote this exceptional high school senior.
