Pecularities of Micaceous Iron Oxide
• Strong colour – Colour Scale limited („DB“-Farben) – Repair / reworkability low
• High density – sedimentation problems
• Highly abrasive – problems for spray application
• Limited deposits / resources

Corrosion Tests
• Tests were performed with with triple determination – in our laboratory – Institute for Corrosion protection (IKS) Dresden (acredited
laboratory)
• Continuous condensation (ISO 6270-1) • Resistance to salt spray (fog, DIN EN 7253) • discontinuous condensation (ISO 6270-2) • Cross-cut test (ISO 2409) • Pull-of test (ISO 4624)
• All systems passed the tests at the IKS Dresden !*
• Bubbles and rust grade in all samples 0
* Specification of the composition not fullfilled for Mica due to low density.

Conclusions I
• The alternative pigments Boruvit and muscovite mica reach at least comparable anti-corrosive properties as MIO
• The alternative pigments fullfill the strict requirements of the BASt, Blatt 87 regarding anti corrosion effect, the performance was officially tested and confirmed by IKS Dresden
• Boruvit is a recycling-product with high UV absorption
• Muscovite Mica has a higher lamellarity as Micaceous Iron Oxide and reduces input of free salts

Page 27
Conclusions II
• The alternative pigments open a wide colour spectrum • They minimize abrasive wear during spray application
and lower application cost • Independent of application way optically uniform results
are achieved • Lower density lead to higher spreading rate and lower
consumption • Less sedimentation of paints makes the workability
better
