Other PHS scholarship winners include Cynthia Castillo ($4,000), Lisbeth Guadarrama ($3,500), David Hernandez ($3,000), Josie Derrick ($3,000), Perla Moran ($2,500), Cecilia Espinoza ($2,000), Anahi Sanchez ($1,500), and Kristy Montoya ($1,500). A total of seven seniors from Chiawana High School earned HAAP scholarships, including Chelsey Farias ($5,000) who plans to attend Central Washington University to pursue a degree in education. Other CHS scholarship winners include Isidro Pantoja ($4,000), Alondra Ayala ($3,500), Arturo Gutierrez ($3,500), Jacqueline Jimenez ($3,500), Melissa Guzman ($3,000), and Maribel Garcia ($2,000). Ochoa Students Win Bikes with Awesome Attendance
Congratulations to Ochoa Middle School students Stephanie and Jose,
the winners of United Way’s Attendance Matters® Bike Giveaway
contest.
Because of their awesome attendance, they each received a mountain
bike and bike helmet courtesy of UA Local Union 598 Plumbers and

PSD Parents, Community Members Invited to Attend Community Input Events
Pasco School District parents and com-
munity members are invited to attend
one of three Community Input Events
scheduled for May 16-18 at the district’s
three middle schools. The district’s
Community Builders group is working
to develop a Long-Term Facilities Plan,
and the information collected at these
community meetings will help them cre-
ate a long-term vision for the district to
address Pasco’s tremendous growth.
Attendees will participate in an interac-
tive survey at the meeting where they
will use “clickers” to share their
thoughts on a series of questions about
the district’s programs and facilities. Af-
ter that, they will break up into smaller
groups to engage in some more in-depth
discussions about some of the topics in
the survey.
These Community Input Meetings are
scheduled for May 16 at Ochoa Middle
School, May 17 at Stevens Middle
School, and May 18 at McLoughlin
Middle School. All three meetings will
start at 6:30 p.m. The same information
and interactive survey will be shared at
all three meetings, so it is only necessary
for interested community members to
attend one of the meetings.

Chiawana Stage Company Presents ‘Steel Magnolias’
The Chiawana High School Stage Company is
proud to present Robert Harling’s southern classic
“Steel Magnolias”, with performances May 18 &
19 at 7 p.m. inside Chiawana’s Black Box Theatre.
The critically acclaimed play focuses on a group
of gossipy southern ladies in a small-town beauty
parlor. It is both hilarious and touching, and, in the
end, deeply revealing about the strength and pur-
posefulness which underlies the wild and humor-
ous banter of its characters.
The musical is directed by Todd Westendorf and
the play features costumes by Verna Schwilke.
Stage managers for the production are CHS stu-
dents Samuel Fishe and Javier Marias.
Advance tickets can be purchased for $8 at the
CHS ASB office, from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
weekdays. Tickets purchased at the door will be
$10. This is a Black Box Theatre production so
seating for each performance is limited.
Pasco HS Team Wins Junior Achievement Competition
Congratulations to a team of Pasco High Bulldogs
who recently won Junior Achievement's 10th an-
nual High-Tech Challenge! The team of Eloy
Lara Alvarado, Nohely Ceja, Jose Garcia and
Macario Yniquez placed 1st, competing against
several other high school teams from around the
Mid-Columbia.
Another PHS team, made up of Andrea Guzman,
Angel Macias, Lillianna Mendoz and Eduardo
Zepeda, was a top finisher in the consolation
round. Both teams were coached by Carol Kauer
and mentored by Brad Anderson of Total Energy
Management.

Columbia Center Rotary Honored with “PinK” Award at Board Meeting

The Pasco School District Board of Directors
presented a Partner in Kindness, or “PinK”,
award to Columbia Center Rotary at their board
meeting on May 9.
Partner in Kindness awards are given to groups,
organizations and individuals who donate more
than $1,000 in cash, goods or services that direct-
ly benefit the students of the Pasco School Dis-
trict.
In April, Columbia Center Rotary donated
$10,000 to help kickstart an afterschool bike pro-
gram at Stevens Middle School. The money will
be used to purchase 15 bicycles and safety equip-
ment for Pasco kids to use as part of a new mid-
dle school bicycle club.
A big “thank you” to Columbia Center Rotary for
their generous commitment to our students and
the Pasco community.

Golfers Hit the Course to Support Virgie Robinson Scholarship Fund
A big "thank you" to the Pasco community for coming out to support the 5th annual Virgie Robinson Scholar-
ship Spring Classic golf tournament on April 29. Dozens of golfers hit the course at Sun Willows and collec-
tively they raised more than $9,000 for the Virgie Robinson Scholarship Fund.
Over the last 11 years, the Virgie Robinson Scholarship Fund has given more than $19,000 in college scholar-
The students also sold luminarias to help raise funds for the American Can-
cer Society. Those luminarias will be lit and set up during the Tri-Cities area
Relay for Life event at John Dam Plaza in Richland on May 20.

Board Notes 5-9-17 Study Session
Sarah Thornton led a discussion about district facilities usage policy. This discussion focused on high school facilities. Special Recognition
Shane Edinger presented a Partner in Kindness award to Columbia Center Rotary for their donation of more than $1,000 to the district. He also presented a special recognition to the District’s school nurses for National School Nurse Day on May 10.

Erich Bolz provided an overview to the board regarding the new curriculum recommendations for Leadership, Music, Science and World Language-French.

The Board held a public hearing and approved Resolution 935 authorizing the sale of surplus district property parcels near Franklin STEM Elementary and north of Court Street between Roads 48 & 52.
The Board approved an increase in elementary and secondary breakfast and lunch prices beginning in the 2017-18 school year to meet the state federal standards.

Michelle Whitney updated the board on the Superintendent’s Annual Work Plan. Special Recognition
Shane Edinger presented a special recognition to the District’s teachers in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week May 1-5. He also recognized Stevens Middle School teacher Armando Rodriguez for achieving National Board Certification.

Kristin Blair updated the board on schools participating in the Community Eligibility Provision program and the need to in-crease the district’s school lunch prices to meet the stated federal standards.
Erich Bolz updated the board on the process and parameters used in the naming process of the early learning center. Several names were discussed but no vote was taken.
