Sky Eats Airplane

Talk about leaving things up in the air. Not since November of 2012 has Sky Eats Airplane addressed their fans in any way, and to this day, they still don’t know what happened (though all would agree it ended far too early).

For years now, Tragic Hero Records has heard time and again how influential and meaningful Everything Perfect on the Wrong Day by Sky Eats Airplane has been for both artists and fans. So, nearly 14 years later, and after a multitude of fan requests, Tragic and SEA have decided to press and release the album on vinyl.

When the record originally came out, it had the exact polarizing reaction among critics that often makes musicians the stuff of legends. At first glance, EPOTWD is indicative of the macabre-neon presentation of the so-called “Myspace era,” but throughout the last decade this album has proved to be tremendously ahead of its time, even influencing modern popular artists like Zedd and Post Malone.

Mute are excited to announce the release of Martin Gore’s EP The Third Chimpanzee on January 29. It will be available on limited azure blue vinyl packaged in a debossed sleeve with an art print, CD packaged in a spined wallet with inner sleeve and debossing, and all digital platforms.

The Third Chimpanzee is the brand new EP from Martin Gore, one of the founding members and primary songwriter of Depeche Mode. Over five brand new tracks Gore explores euphoric modular sounds and develops his career long relationship with electronic music. The EP follows his eponymous album MG in 2015 and SSSS, his collaboration with Erasure’s Vince Clarke for their VCMG project. The artwork was created by Pockets Warhol, a capuchin monkey based in Canada who paints for charity.

Martin Gore was inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Depeche Mode in 2020.

The Sonder Bombs have doubled down on their second record. 2018’s debut MODERN FEMALE ROCKSTAR was their first bet: an all-caps attack against a male-dominated scene brandishing a ukulele and dry wit as chosen weapons. A year and some change passed, where the Cleveland band’s relentless touring ethic and tough love caused a homegrown fan base to explode worldwide. Clothbound, like the title suggests, weaves a different narrative—one of loss, letting go, and losing patience with losers. If the first record introduced unapologetic sensitivity, Clothbound searches for the root causes of other key elements.

Produced in Philadelphia during quarantine with Joe Reinhart (Hop Along, Beach Bunny), Clothbound captures a band burning at both ends. Fans of vocalist/ukulele/guitarist Willow Hawks’ exasperated kiss-offs will have plenty to unpack here, from the frantic goodbyes spat through “Swing on Sight” or “What Are Friends For,” where Hawks entertains this question while the background smolders around the punctuation—a ukulele strum here, Willow Hawks’ vocal line trailing like an asteroid collision there. As this is the second volume in the Sondie songbook, evolved moments, like the acoustic-electric elegy “Scattered,” sit near the band at their most sloganeering and effective. “Crying is Cool,” a live staple eagerly awaiting its reveal, teaches listeners of all ages that it’s okay to hole up with your feelings as long as you give them room to grow. The band’s also not afraid of taking their own advice, letting their emotions run wild on “K.,” an absolute barnstormer of a track where the Bombs fire off all cylinders while winking to hardcore and metal. The chips are down and the deck is stacked here. The band’s all in. Are you?

Born in Pinsk, Belarus in 1984 and immigrating to Canada in 1992 with the collapse of the USSR; Alexei Orechin has been actively shaping musical environments with his current projects No Seas, a solo project for guitar and tape, and leading his own ensemble incorporating jazz, chamber, and experimental elements into his compositional work.

A diverse talent that is reflected in the company he has shared the stage with: Nas, Akae Beka, Rana Mansour, Shad, Yaadcore, and Sina Bathaie. He has played in USA, Mexico, Europe, and Russia. Performances include the TD and Montreal Jazz Festivals, Caribana, Irie Music Festival, Tirgan Festival, and Pride Toronto. His music for film has been featured at TIFF, CFC, NFB and the Warsaw Jewish Film Festival. He has been featured on CBC, Noisey, Global News, The Star, Dub Rockers, Huffpost, Afropunk, and Relix magazine.

2020 saw the premier of ‘1992 Ambient’, a 45-minute long composition that is a ‘therapeutic experiment in slowly melting sound and colour; representing the acculturation and restructuring oneself through emigrating from Russia to Canada in 1992’.

2020 will also see the release of his debut full length album Mirages; an album that showcases his diverse and ever evolving style of composition, ranging from moments of melodic solitude to fractal experimentalism.
