⁂ Rye Bonfire ⁂

On the 13th of November, Chris and Roberta were our guides into the Rye Bonfire, a typically British celebration that dates back to the Middle-Ages.

First of all, a little bit of History to understand this cute tradition... The Bonfire celebrates the failure of the Gunpowder Plot that attempted the lifes of King James 1st and of the Parliamentarians on the 5th of November 1605. King James decided that his lucky escape from death should be celebrated forever all over the country, by processions and bonfires.

This tradition declined with time, but the charming medieval city of Rye kept going with a popular celebration in the beginning of November. The Sussex Societies protect this custom by annually organising a procession trough the city of Rye, with historical costumes, flaming torches and drum bands, also staring the Dragon and the Burning Boat, symbols of the Societies.

We waited for the parade a very very long time in the cold and rain, searching some consolation in candy floss, wet sticking gloves and Sophie’s Fish Show, it finally appeared, and we have the extreme pleasure to see some gladiators, pirates, clowns, skeletons, and many others creatures carrying some light and heat in the dark of the night... The torch procession followed its way across the city to end up in front of a mountain of wood, where every walker could have set fire to the “Normous Bonfire”, warming up the crowd patiently waiting under the cold rain... Excellent and colourful fireworks close the celebration, for our eyes’ pleasure, why not followed by some beers in a pub...

Even if Sophie was not allowed to buy lighting rabbit ears (that was so mean of you Julien, we should have bought them for her!), I think I can say we all appreciated this little piece of British customs, and the traditional British pub (that’s also part of the tradition!).

Staff Presentation - Spiros 2

What are your main hobbies/interests in life? One thing that I really enjoy is travelling. I am always trying to find time and money to travel, because I think that is one of the best ways to learn new things and widen your horizons. Aside from that I like taking photographs and then editing them and my free time I always want to spend it with good friends while drinking coffee.

Where are you from and what makes your country and city worth visiting?

I come from Greece and specifically from Corfu. Corfu, like Greece in general, is famous for its sunny weather, tasty food,

very diverse landscapes (mountains and sea), beautiful beaches and hospitable people.

What are you studying and what are your future plans?

I’m studying Marketing and Communications in the Athens University of Economics and Business. For the time being I don’t have yet any specific plans for the future as I need to finish my studies and serve on the military for 9 months! My wish is to find a job that I will enjoy doing!

Tell me something we didn't know about you?

Hm.. Tough question. When I was still at school I was taking part in the school’s theatrical team. We were even taking part in theatrical competitions through out Greece.

Which qualities are you looking for in people around you?

I am not really selective on the people I hang out with. I just want to have fun while being with them and I expect them not to be easily offended and be as honest as possible.

What did this internship bring to you?

The highlight of this internship for me, is for sure the people here in New Romney! I really enjoy my time here and that is because of them! I really like the fact that we hang out with people from different countries and that there is always something new to learn about the people and their cultures.

What are your main hobbies/interests in life?

I’m really interested in a lot of different things actually. Like everybody, I love hanging out with friends and my family. I think that it’s really important to spend time with people you like.To stay in fine shape, I used to practice sports like horse ridding, swimming and tennis.Of course I also love to relax by going to the cinema to watch a good movie or by going to the restaurant to enjoy a delicious meal. I’m always interested in exploring new places, in visiting museums and seeing exhibitions. I love to travel and discover new civilization. I think that my next destination will be South

America: I feel really attracted by this region even if I also want to discover a lot of other countries and continents. But I have a lot of time in front of me to do all these travels!!Concerning my other hobbies, as you’ve probably noticed it during my stay here, I LOVE cooking and trying all kind of new food and dishes.

Where are you from and what makes your country and city worth visiting?

I’m from Tours, in France ( South-west of Paris at 250 kilometres) were I live since 20 years now. However, I was born in Caen in Normandy (the French coast that you can see from Foreshore!)where I stayed 2 years.Tours and its region is well-known for its beautiful castles called the “Châteaux de la Loire”, located in the Loire valley and for its famous people like:– Leonard de Vinci, famous Italian artist who spent its last years in Amboise,– Honoré de Balzac, – Réné Descartes and – François Rabelais, famous French writer who was born near Tours.Due to its concentration of castles and to the the presence of the royal court during several centuries, the “Touraine” region has the reputation to be the cradle of the French language and the the area of France where the purest French is spoken!!I didn’t say that because I’m proud of my city, it’s just what people and books say! ;)

PS: You should be happy to have a French lessons teacher who speaks the best”French”in France hihi..Concerning the food specialities, ( yes I cannot finish without dealing about this food topic!) the region is famous for its good wines, its delicious “fromage de chèvre” ( goat cheese), its nougat and for its cooked pork meats.

What are you studying and what are your future plans?

I’m currently studying foreign languages and international business. In France, it’s called LEA ( Langues Etrangères Appliquées) it means that I learn 2 languages and I apply them to different domains such as law, economics, business, management, history, communication etc... This studies are quite wide but this is what I needed since I didn’t really know what to study.At the beginning I started to study medicine because I really like this domain and I wanted to be a midwife or a physiotherapist but then I thought that it wasn’t the kind of studies made for me.

Tell me something we didn't know about you?

Haha you will know everything about me if I reveal too many secrets..!!Ok I’m going to tell you one thing you probably don’t know and which is not compromising for me :)I practised gymnastics for 6 years but then I had to stop because I was to tall...Yes it’s not a joke,– on the balance beam, I started to look like a giraffe with my long legs– on the asymmetric bars, I touched the ground when I was suspended to the highest bar– on the floor, I was less agile and fast than the others girls smaller than me :(I let you imagine...I also practised tennis and horse ridding but like with gymnastics, I also had to stop a few years ago.

What did this internship bring to you?

This internship taught me a lot of interesting things in several different fields.For example, professionally speaking, I learned a lot about the responsibilities of the different people within the office.The life at the office is also a good way for me to see the daily routine and the functioning of a company like Gift-tours or Traveltura with these meetings, these workshops, this promotion parties etc..Moreover, my recent stay in London in the WTM brought me a lot about the professional life, about how to do business, how to promote one’s company and how to enter in contact with potential partners.I also learned a lot about how to live in community: it’s always interesting to discover an other way of life and to have to adapt ourself to all the daily situations that we have to face with during our stay. Indeed when you live with other people, sometimes you have to make some concessions, you also have to leave your little habits and not to think always for yourself. It’s a good way to develop your sense of respect, service and responsibility too. It was also a rich experience to meet all these people coming from different foreign countries. It’s helps to become more open-minded and to learn more about the habits and customs of the other countries.Furthermore,as we are a really NICE and FUNNY group of interns :) , I think that it helps people to feel comfortable, to be less shy, to talk more and to practice their English without any shame!!

“Trick or treat!”

It would have been a crime being in England and not properly celebrate Halloween ... New Romney and its inhabitants put on their most ugly outfits and imagined the scariest faces to say goodbye to two of our former and beloved members, Wioletta and Carolien.

While the vampires and werewolves’ favourite night of the year was just about to begin, something blood-curdling was happening under the pale ray of the New Romney moonlight ...

In the core of Foreshore, an army of monsters was building up, by the magic of black, red and white make-up and the sorcerous power of a Halloween night...

Edward Scissorhands, Frankenstein, Dracula and the Joker (but no Edward Cullen or Jacob Black on the horizon) made of Foreshore their den of vice, drank pints of fresh blood (or booze?) and wildly feasted until the early morning...

The night was dark and cold when the ritual worship of Jack O’ Lantern, who had just emerged from Stefania and Ilse’s womb (yes, both of them gave birth earlier in the evening), started, immortalized by hundreds of photos. A hard time for the vampires, I had a lot of complains about the unstoppable flashes, one of them nearly fall into ashes (yes that was you Khaled).

It was then Wiola and Carolien’s turn to be venerated, and we drank in their words, staring at them not as Goddesses but as fascinating devils... It was time to say goodbye, as they were about to return to the hell that saw them bear. But even thinking of them rotting in the flames of hell, we will miss them (even devils got an heart, remember Phoebe Halliwell and Cole Turner in Charmed...).

But Halloween only last a night and the New Romney permanent sunshine made all this scum of the earth flee to their dark and gloomy lairs... The magic evil of Halloween was gone, werewolves returned humans, vampires lost their beautiful canines, zombies went back to their tombs, Jack O’ Lantern reverted pumpkin, and Edward and Jacob (again!) still were only film characters...

Foreshore was glad to introduce the new Miss New Romney, title gained during the M-Party on the 6th of November(apparently a lot of fun I didn’t have...).I had the chance to approach the recently self-proclaimed but acclaimed Miss NR, named Iida Pukkila, and I manage to get an exclusive interview, only for you my dears...

What is the essence of being a woman according to you?In my opinion, the very essence of being a woman is to look beautiful, to take care of yourself, of the image you are giving to the world, but also to take of others, and especially of men, because sometimes they are so helpless that they cannot survive without us. Women have to show them how the world is going on.

What will you rank first and why? Body, Beauty, Brain?I don’t think I can rank any of these, as all of them should be number 1, and we actually need all of these to succeed in life.

Would you rather be beautiful or smart?I would prefer to be beautiful of course, but if you are not smart at all, you will not be able to take advantage of your good-looking, so I would say both, but beautiful first.

Would you rather be beautiful or rich?Definitely beautiful, because then it is easy to charm a rich man and become wealthy!

If you could be one of the forces of nature, which one would you be and why?I think I would be the Fire, because inside I got a volcanic temperament, even if as a girl I am trying to hide it. And Fire is powerful, and power is an achievement in itself.

If you had the power to decide on your future, what would it be?I am not expecting so much of life, so I guess having my own coffee shop, very pinkish, where I could sell also marshmallows and where Filipa could sell her delicious cakes, would be a nice dream. And also travel the world with a very handsome husband and lots of babies...

If you only had one wish to realize, what would it be?I wished all the people would care more and love each other more, so that they can realize that money and Ferrari would not bring happiness to anyone. And if my father could bring me shoe-shopping when I’ll go home, it will not be bad...

Our only and unique Polish girl left us on the 31th of October, and seeing her leaving in her boyfriend’s car was not even relieving when we saw what a good driver he was! Hopefully she arrived in Poland in one piece, and we wish her great times there, even if we miss her...

Everybody knows how special was Carolien to me, so I will obviously do a special dedication to this sweet Belgium girl (yes, French fries are Belgium fries...) with whom I spent so many good moments before she left on the 1st

of November... I know I am not the only one who misses her, so we wish her all the best and see you soon baby!

Stefania D’Ippolito

One of our delightful Italian girl will leave us on the 26th of November! She made Francesca change her mind about Milanese, because of her kindness and her smile... We will all miss her (maybe more especially the boys who won’t be able to admire her beauty any more...) and we all thank her for having shared so much great time with us!

Jonathan Mougin

Johnny boy is leaving us! God how will we survive? Hopefully Benoit and Matthieu will become our new computer Gods, but anyway we will really miss the sweetness and kindness of this boy... Please stay as you are, and do not forget us (and me in particular...)!

highlight your natural beauties...

Egg Whites and Yogurt Mask for All Skin Types

Ingredients:• 2 egg whites, separated from the yolk and placed in a bowl

• 2 tablespoons of plain yoghurt (I like Greek yoghurt)

Preparation: Separate the egg whites from a couple eggs and place them in a bowl. Add 2 tablespoons of yoghurt (do not use flavoured yoghurt!). Mix them up and apply to face. Leave on face for a few minutes then rinse face in warm water.

Banana Mask for Oily, Acne-Prone Skin

Ingredients:• 1 banana, preferably ripe • 1 tbsp honey

• An orange or a lemon

Preparation: Mix the banana and honey together. Add a few drops of juice from an orange or a lemon. Apply to face for 15 minutes before rinsing with a cool wash cloth or a steaming warm wash cloth.

Aspirin Mask Helps Heal Acne, Pimples, Rashes

Ingredients:

• 1-3 aspirin

• Warm honey (runny honey), moisturiser made for the face or natural oil such as almond, olive or coconut

Preparation: Depending on the amount of coverage needed, use 1-3 aspirin. Crush the aspirin into small pieces by rolling a coffee cup or glass cup over them. Place aspirin in a shallow dish. Stir in a few drops of water to help the aspirin dissolve into a paste. Add warm honey, moisturiser or a bit of oil (almond, olive or coconut works). Stir well. Apply as a mask or spot treat the pimple or itchy area. Allow to dry. Wash off after 10 minutes.

Strawberry Acne Mask

Ingredients:• 1/4 cup strawberries (fresh, not frozen please)

• 1/4 cup sour cream or non-flavoured yoghurt

Preparation: Mash together the strawberries and yoghurt or sour cream. Spread on face and wash after 10-15 minutes.

Avocado Mask for Dry Skin

Ingredients:• ½ avocado

• ¼ cup honey

Preparation: A classic recipe for dry skin. Mash the avocado in a bowl, then stir in honey.Apply to skin and leave for 10 minutes. Rinse face with a cool wash cloth.

Yoghurt Mask for Sensitive or Sunburnt Skin

Ingredients:

• 1 cup natural yogurt (we like it just-out-of-the-fridge cold)

• ½ cup oatmeal (any type of basic oatmeal works here)

Preparation: Mix the ingredients together. Apply to the skin for 10-15 minutes.Wash off mask with a wash cloth steamed in the microwave (careful that it's not too hot).

“Back to childhood...”

Stefania and Jonathan decided, for an obscure and undetermined reason, to choose a “Baby Party” as the theme of their Thank You Party. We all returned on childhood for one evening, surrounded by the magic universe of our favourite cartoons and fairy tales... Kiding. Even worse than usual, this party was an apotheosis of alcohol and crazy people. The only difference was that people were cute. At the beginning at least.

Once upon a time, in a place called Foreshore, were living children, gently playing in their playground, without any parental authority. But the evil of the game and booze infiltrate the place, and they began to play cards, trying vodka and other alcoholic blends...

If you ever dreamt of giant babies (exactly like in the movie Honey, I blew up the Kid), your nightmare would have become true on this Friday evening... Entering

Foreshore, you would have meet big babies sucking at beer baby’s bottles, Pippi Longstocking dancing on electro music, and if you had stay a little while, you could maybe have seen a cute baby girl (yes, that is you Stefie) puking on her bib...

Crazy party indeed. Most people were deadly drunk of fighting about which drinking game to play, jumping on each other but mainly on Raquel, giving us incredible Thank You speeches, throwing glass of water at sleeping people... Weird party though, but lots of fun, as always!

As you could have understand it, we were far from these sweet ads for nappies and softener staring beautiful babies laughing... Even Matthieu lost his cute laugh after a couple of beers, and just stayed himself, but naked and in nappies. We should work a little more harder our characters for the next Cinema Party!

A newlywed couple moves into their new house. One day the husband comes home from work and his wife says, "Honey, you know, in the upstairs bathroom one of the pipes is leaking, could you fix it?" The husband says, "What do I look like, Mr. Plumber?"

A few days go by, and he comes home from work and his wife says, "Honey, the car won't start. I think it needs a new battery. Could you change it for me?" He says: "What do I look like, Mr. Goodwrench?"

Another few days go by, and it's raining pretty hard. The wife finds a leak in the roof. She says, "Honey, there's a leak on the roof! Can you please fix it?" He says, "What do I look like, Bob Vila?"

The next day the husband comes home, and the roof is fixed. So is the plumbing. So is the car. He asks his wife what happened. "Oh, I had a handyman come in and fix them," she says. "Great! How much is that going to cost me?" he snarls. Wife says: "Nothing. He said he'd do it for free if I either baked him a cake or slept with him." A couple of New Jersey hunters are out in the woods when one of them falls to the ground. He doesn't seem to be breathing, his eyes are rolled back in his head. The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps to the operator: “My friend is dead! What can I do?”

The operator, in a calm soothing voice says: “Just take it easy. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead.” There is a silence, then a shot is heard.

The guy's voice comes back on the line. He says: “OK, now what?“
