Scottish Education System

• What is S6 for?

• Many but not all of our young people work towards Highers in S5; some gain the Highers they need for university by the end of S5.

• Often hard to encourage and maintain motivation if this is the case.

• “Aim Higher”

Page 3: New S6 Parents’ Information Evening - eduBuzz.org · 2016. 6. 20. · •You are welcome to sign out if you have study periods but must be in school for registration and period

I asked the pupils about their S6 experience: • How have you added value to your S5 achievements in S6?

could have studied that you didn’t get the opportunity to shave been the best aspects of being an S6 learner at NBHS?

• “I haven’t”

My findings

• “I feel I’ve really bridged the gap between high school and further education”

• “I wish I’d tried harder further down the school so S6 wasn’t as stressful”

• “I regret not taking a new subject in S6”

• “Thank you to my teachers who helped me understand how I learn”

• “AH courses were challenging but ‘grown-up’”

Page 7: New S6 Parents’ Information Evening - eduBuzz.org · 2016. 6. 20. · •You are welcome to sign out if you have study periods but must be in school for registration and period

• “The teachers treated us as almost equals…”

• “I loved the volunteering!”

• “I felt more respected in school by youngers and teachers”

• “I was scared of the academic challenges but I have coped better than I thought I would”

Page 8: New S6 Parents’ Information Evening - eduBuzz.org · 2016. 6. 20. · •You are welcome to sign out if you have study periods but must be in school for registration and period

And…

• “we wish we had more places to study”

• “I contracted S6-itis. I tried to resist but it got me in the end…”

• “I wish someone had told me what a mortgage is…”

• “more access to computers”

• “I would have liked to have come back to a ------- course”

• “been braver in my subject choices”

How can NBHS support you to add value to your S5 achievements in S6?

• That is what S6 is for.

• It will be wonderful!

• Young adults, not children

• Buy in or….?

• Work with younger pupils

• Level 5 Skills for Work Volunteering Award

• Lead, don’t follow

• Share your ideas

• Impress others with your commitment

Reflect

• What kind of person do you want to be when you transition to the next phase of your life?

• You don’t have to know what you’re going to be at age 16 but you have to start in the right direction.

Page 11: New S6 Parents’ Information Evening - eduBuzz.org · 2016. 6. 20. · •You are welcome to sign out if you have study periods but must be in school for registration and period

Pupils were told we want S6 to be amazing for them! • I don’t want it to be something you have chosen

out of fear of leaving or because you can’t find anything else to do.

• If you identify yourself as requiring additional support to achieve your potential in S6, you will be given that support.

• If the support is not accepted and improvements are not made, you will be supported to find a positive destination outwith school.

Page 14: New S6 Parents’ Information Evening - eduBuzz.org · 2016. 6. 20. · •You are welcome to sign out if you have study periods but must be in school for registration and period

• We currently advise that 4 columns are filled by each S6 pupil unless taking 3 Advanced Higher courses.

• We strongly discourage less than this as we want to get it right for your child and their chances of reaching and sustaining a positive destination when they leave.

Page 15: New S6 Parents’ Information Evening - eduBuzz.org · 2016. 6. 20. · •You are welcome to sign out if you have study periods but must be in school for registration and period

A recent development…

• Letter sent from University of Edinburgh and other key institutions to all pupils with unconditional offers outlining importance of maintaining academic study in S6.

• U offers trigger requests to drop subjects – strongly discouraged to do this as now, you must tell the university/college/employer you have applied under different circumstances to those under which your offer was made.

Identify yourself as a member of the S6 community by wearing uniform.

Support school policies designed to keep the environment pleasant, safe and healthy for all.

Page 17: New S6 Parents’ Information Evening - eduBuzz.org · 2016. 6. 20. · •You are welcome to sign out if you have study periods but must be in school for registration and period

Be treated with respect and treat other members of the school community with respect.

20 hours of community service (Level 5 Skills for Work Volunteering Award)

This is your S6 Contract. Any breach of this will trigger an intervention.

Duties

Each register class is “on duty” for a week – supervision of queue in dining hall at break and lunch.

Each member of the class will sign up for a preferred day of the week to do their duty.

Every member of the S6 community will be scheduled for duties on the dining hall rota.

S6 pupils will not be permitted to use their “straight to the front of the queue” privilege unless appropriate S6 have reported for duty.

If yes, the North Berwick Youth Project is looking for volunteers to work alongside experienced youth workers at our weekly drop-ins, groups and trips.

Benefits of volunteering:

Learn new skills in leadership

If you are interested in volunteering in either of the above, please contact Scott Walker (Project Manager) [email protected]
