Iam thinking about the artist Dieudonné Kabongo. This man is related to ISHANGO MILELEs origins, Sharing Knowledge for peace. In 1999, he was one of the first to introduce me to the Ishango stick, an exceptional object which is today at the heartof our mission. Six years after his violent death on stage, Dieudonné is still visiting me,

almost every day. He is truly an inspiring source, allowing us to keep enthusiasm andmotivation for the ISHANGO MILELE’s mission.

I must admit that this is not easy every day; and sometimes my motivation and my energy weaken.

Without this “visit”, I would probably have dropped my “pilgrim stick”. The journey is longand demanding, requiring courage and tenacity. Despite everything, with these twoyears of commitment, I have noticed that our message sharing knowledge for peaceis obvious everywhere in the world.

In June of 2015, ISHANGO MILELE presented its program at the United Nations in NewYork. This presentation raised the awareness of international individuals; such as JeanVictor Nkolo, the spokesman of the 64th and 65th UNO’s assemblies and the musician/director Robin Dimaggio (musical director of the PGA gala at the 67th, 68th and 69thgeneral assembly of the UNO). Thus we do use our energy by appealing the private sector and the institutional one for support.

After some weeks, we came to the conclusion that we need means to achieve our projects, even if the enthusiasm created by the wealth of our program is tangible.

We are questioning: “why financial are supports weak whereas our moral support isstrong and everywhere in the world?” These facts lead me to express all my recognitionto some Ambassadors, scientists, artists, humanists, companies’ directors and politiciansthat are supporting us. Thanks to them and without discouragement, ISHANGO MILELE’ssmall team goes on and uses its talents and persuasion to spread its message SharingKnowledge for Peace around us and abroad.

Is it the "utopian" connotation, that leads humans to break off the link between emotionsand actions? I am convinced that UTOPIA is needed to counter balance bad news.Aware of this reality, Ishango Milele team does promise you perseverance and abnegation: the document you are holding right now is a proof of our good faith. It isour role to make everything we can so that tomorrow… YOU WILL BE READY!

«During the presentation of

the «ISHANGO MILELE»’s

program at the United Nations,

I felt instantly touched by the

trueness of the message «Sharing know-

ledge for peace». The Ishango bone's

symbolic strength, which is the banner of

the African scientific culture for peace

helped me to realize that it was my duty

to get involved and use my abilities and

my contacts in order to encourage the

recognition of «ISHANGO MILELE» ’s

program in the USA. We must act as fast

as possible, without losing time; an

emergency that I’ve already shared with

Quincy Jones, Morgan Freeman, Stevie

how important it is that our Peace

program be addressed to future genera-

Ishango Milele». It's a matter of urgency. Peaceful co-

existence is in jeopardy. Every day, the news shows us

acts of unbearable violence, based on the withdrawal

of information, intolerance and ignorance. Today, following

my meeting with a team of enthusiastic and motivated peo-

ple, an international operation has been launched for the

promotion of knowledge of basic sciences among young

people. It concerns «Ishango Milele», a long-term pro-

gramme, designed to promote sciences, from generation to

generation, and lay the foundations for the peace of tomor-

row. To illustrate its philosophy, «Ishango Milele» uses the

Ishango Bone as a symbol and banner. This small bone, yes,

this 25,000-year-old bone, you heard correctly: 25,000

years old, was found in Central Africa, more precisely in

the Democratic Republic of Congo. This bone is considered

to be the first record of mathematics in history. Today,

«Ishango Milele» creates a programme based on education,

scientific research, history, space, artistic creation and the

recognition of the values of the Ishango Bone. Major inter-

national figures in science, art, research (including the spa-

tial domain) as well as the political world, support Ishango

Milele. As a citizen of the world, I had no other option but

to support this programme. The peace of tomorrow can only

be built on the sharing of knowledge, tolerance and recon-

ciliation. It is why I have the privilege of addressing you

today. «Ishango Milele» needs you, to connect with this

programme in a very simple way: embrace the offers that

have been presented to you here with enthusiasm. Though

perhaps a daunting task, it is useful and rewarding. The

Ishango Bone, the programme's emblem, also has the pri-

vilege to positively represent an African continent that is

all too often branded with a negative image. A symbol from

a developing country, and the origin of human knowledge,

perfectly summarises the philosophy of the «Ishango Mi-

lele» programme. Hoping to have aroused your enthusiasm

and awakened your motivation to participate in the Ishango

Milele programme, I thank you for the particular attention

you give this speech and I offer you, on behalf of the United

Nations in New York, my heartfelt regards.

The Ishango Milele Foundation encourages and stimulates

youth awareness and understanding of the importance of

science and technology as a force for harmony and

progress. It does this by celebrating the achievements and

creative endeavours of Africa in science, technology and

the arts. It builds awareness of Africa and its place in the modern

world, based on its contribution to progress throughout the ages as

well as on the genius and creativity of its people today.

The story starts with the Ishango Bone, an archaeological artefact

discovered in central Africa in 1950. Considered the oldest

mathematical object found anywhere in the world, it is evidence of

the existence of a complex sophisticated civilisation twenty-two

thousand years ago on the border between modern day

Congo and Uganda. The people of Ishango invented a

number system and basic mathematical tools to help

them carry out complex calculations, perhaps for

building, surveying and collecting taxes. Twenty-two

thousand years later the whole of humanity

continues to build upon such early

abstractions to provide itself with tools that

are essential for all aspects of life on

earth, tools that will one day help us to

move between and live among the

planets and the stars.

The foundation derives its name from the Ishango bone, which

symbolises the humanitarian ideal of sharing knowledge for peace.

This artefact provides a starting point for telling the story of African

invention and creativity, from the time of the Ishango people up

to the present day, and into the future based on international

cooperation in science, education, culture and the arts.

Among the millions of objects discovered at

Ishango by Jean de Heinzelin’s team, some are

more interesting than others. One in

particular has been in the spotlight and

become a star of African archaeology-

the carved Ishango bone.

It is known as ‘the Ishango Bone’. It is an objectmade from a piece of quartz and a bonehandle. Its structure alone makes it a remarka-ble object, as there are very few surviving pre-historic composite tools. The very fine quartz at one end could havebeen used for precise work, such as the ritual scarification of skin, for example. The bone handle has been narrowed, scra-ped, polished and engraved, so we can nolonger tell what kind of bone it is, although wedo know it belonged to a mammal.

What is so interesting about it?The Ishango Bone’s handle is its claim to fame, because the decoration has been raisingquestions about its possi ble meaning since itsdiscovery. The handle is carved with 168 pa-rallel marks. These lines are positioned ingroups of parallel lines split into columns onthree sides of the handle.

Interesting isn’t it? Especially when you keep inmind that it’s 25,000 years old…If one day one of the mathematical hypotheses isconfir med, it means that Palaeolithic humans alreadyhad a well-developed understanding of mathematics. This raises yet more questions: what did they use it for?Why did they mix several calculation bases? Was thisknowledge shared among all of them? Was it used byfishermen?

Even today, the Ishango site still has not revealed allof its secrets; the Semliki Valley still hides other prehis-toric sites. This region of Africa has been inhabited byHomo sapiens sapiens for at least 100,000 years.

We still lack a lot of information to truly understandthe ancient Ishangoans’ lifestyle, settlement andway of thinking.

Therefore, sooner or later, archaeologists must returnto the banks of Lake Edward to complete the puzzlethat was started in the fifties. No doubt, the missing pieces are still hidden in theground…

and its capture will allow us to convey the message throughseveral medias. (TV broadcast, DVD, documentary, web,...). The richness of the Oratorio becomes audible in thevoices of the Symphonic Choir who gets carried away atthe whim of African rhythms. It reminds us of the long cul-tural relationship between the two continents: Africa andEurope. The blending of these two existing cultures intoclassic, jazz and world music is the foundation of this pro-ject. BOZAR - Brussels must host this great show for itsworld premiere in 2019.

The DIGITAL IS “AFRICA” Travelling Exhibition: A moveable exhibitionand educational resource aimed at the general public, students, parents andteachers. The exposition invites exploration of Africa as a continent, it’s history and its contribution to humanity, it’s talent and creativity, our

relationship with Africa in the world at present and in the future. It also invitesexploration of mathematics, the role of mathematics in communication and

commerce, business and leisure and how this will evolve in our shared future. Mon Village, a non-profit association led by Chantal HEMERIJCKX is already playing a key role inbringing this to schools and libraries in Ixelles.

INNOVATION in Education: This program is inspired by the activities of HE2B in Belgiumand the activities of the Next Einstein Forum in Africa. The focus is on innovation in methodsof teaching, new models for student-teacher interaction, the use of tools such as MOOCs. Important elements of this program include the work of MANDJI to improve literacy skills basedon the use of music and French song led by Nicole LETUPPE and the activities of HE2B withCLISE the International Forum on the “flipped classroom.”

Student and Teacher EXCHANGE: Although we are still at the idea stage, the ambition is todevelop durable exchange programs involving students and teachers to enable the widespreadadoption of innovations in teaching, breaking down barriers between mathematics, music, languageand creative expression.

The goal is preparing young people for a life filled with different kinds of collaboration with peopleand with machines, across continents, using tools that rely on algorithms, AI and automation, ina world powered by mathematics, a story that started with the Ishango Bone 25.000 year ago.

Promote Study of Early African Civilisation: This includes participation inworkshops and conferences to study the Ishango Bone and similar artefacts,to better understand the civilisation that produced it and the context in whichit was used.

Participation in Science and Technology Events: The involves the organisationof events in scientific spaces to inform the public of the role of Africa in the development

of science and technology through the ages and up to the present day. These outreach initiatives include participation in the annual Festival of the Iris in Brussels, the Annual Science and Technology Week of the DRCongo held in Kinshasa and Goma, major events of the Next Einstein Forum and events organized with European Space Agency, for example at the EuroSpace Centre in Belgium.

the Virunga parc and he is also an international programcoordinator for the cooperation between three cities; Woluwé-Saint-Pierre in Belgium and Goma-Butembo, Beniin DRC. This program aims at realizing the digitization ofcivil status of the Congolese cities. Augustin is an«ISHANGO MILELE»’s representative in DRC, Rwandaand Uganda. He is leading historical and local culturegroups around the Ishango’s thematic. Living in North Kivu(on the archaeological site of Ishango), he is involved in thestrengthening of five schools in Rutshuru. These schoolsare dedicated to children from 6 to 12 years old, and teaching methods are characterized by the fact that they aimat initiating children with environment subjects in order to familiarize them with wildlife and remains of an inter-pellator previous human activity. Objectives of pedagogicalvalorisation by the Ishango thematic are also present in the«Youth’association for drawing and painting», an active organization in Goma, that has been created four years agoby Augustin and others. A visit at the Natural Sciences Museum was the opportunity for an important data trans-mission about the site of Ishango, establishing thus exchanges and concerning contacts by the site of Ishango.

Already 2 years have elapsedsince the association «IshangoMilele» launched its call «Sha-ring Knowledge for Peace»against a worrying backdrop

of political and economic turmoil andclimate change events, a transitionalperiod where evolution and revolu-tion have become part of our dailylives. Unwilling to give in to pessimism, this is a call centred on one of themost ancient relics of human activity:the Ishango bone, found in Africa, setas a symbol of high level ethnic andscientific progress through peace-sharing for all mankind. The vision andthe desire to show the overall progressof this project were relayed by JeanVictor Nkolo, the porte-parole of theUnited Nations in New York during thecelebrations of the 69th anniversary ofthis institution. Over the last two years,by rekindling the interest and enthu-siasm generated by a show in 2001when we presented the Ishangobone, we have succeeded in kee-ping the project and its symbolismalive in the eyes ofscientists, politi-cians, artists and the media. Guar-dian of the Ishango bone andpromoter of the message «SharingKnowledge for Peace» we are startingto receive support from politicalspheres and cooperation from emi-nent institutions in the scientific, artand media world. Despite inade-quate means for the moment,«Ishango Milele» has shown that de-termination, enthusiasm, hard work

and abnegation can change theface of things. Acknowledgementsfor Tomorrow - Demain-lefilm.com -were indeed proof of this. On thespot, in Ishango, Congo, our action isrelayed via a network of local repre-sentatives of the Gorilla Organizationwho fight for a common cause thatlinks the protection of habitat with thepromotion of intellectual and moralvalues of the local population. In Brus-sels and with the support of the Com-mission Communautaire Française,an awareness campaign is takingshape, targeting young people. This isdone in partnership with «Innoviris»and «Ti Suka». Many other initiativesare also on the cards and will be fina-lized shortly. Ishango Milele receivessupport and collaboration at differentlevels depending on the projects ofthe Belgian and Congolese Commit-tees for UNESCO, the Belgian andCongolese Ministries of Culture andEducation, ERAIFT, the Brussels Regionand the City of Brussels. Scientific sup-port from the Institute «Institut Royaldes Sciences Naturelles de Belgique»and the MRAC Museum (Musée Royald’Afrique Centrale) is indeed a valua-ble asset. «Ishango Milele» also relieson the expertise of well-known inter-national figures in the world ofscience, culture and politics.

Ishango Bone – Hypotheses. By Dirk Huylebrouck and Vladimir Pletser.

Jean de Heinzelin established the hypothesis that this group of lines repre-sented numbers. In several historic periods it was common to write numbersusing lines. From there Heinzelin looked for a possible mathematical connec-tion to link these different numbers. What he found led him to believe thatthe bone was proof of advanced mathematics, unprecedented for suchan early period. Here are some observations and interpretations expressedby Jean de Heinzelin in his 1957 article on theIshango site: Central Column -The central column shows a number and its double: three and six, four andeight, five and ten, and two numbers that do not fit this pattern (five andseven). Right Column - From this side the numbers could have a link with thenumber ten, a well-known number base. Therefore we have: 11 = 10 + 1 / 21= 20 + 1 / 19 = 20 – 1 / 9 = 10 – 1. Left Column : The Ishangoans would haveknown that eleven, thirteen, seventeen and nineteen are the prime numbersbetween ten and twenty. A prime number is a number that can only be divided by two numbers: itself and one. Other researchers have shared theirinterpretations of the marks: The mathematicians Dirk Huylebrouk and Vladimir Pletser looked into Jean de Heinzelin’s ideas about number nota-tion, and came to the conclusion that the bone was a kind of sliding scalewhich involved variations of the three and four base numbers, and by ex-tension of base number twelve (3x4). However, they concluded that therewas not enough proof to confirm an understanding of prime numbers...
