New Species in Aquaculture

Marco Frederiksen Ph.D.

Eurofish International Organisation

Lithuania 29 September 2016

Agenda

• Traditional species

• Upcoming species

• Future perspectives

Fish is by far the best protein source to produce

• 1 kg beef ~ 18 kg feed needed (~ 15,5m3 freshwater)

• 1 kg pork ~ 4 kg feed needed (~ 4,8m3 freshwater)

• 1 kg chicken ~ 3,2 kg feed needed (~3,9 m3 freshwater)

• 1 kg trout ~ 0,8 kg feed needed (~0,3-3 m3 freshwater RAS)

• Long term • Fish has the lowest CO2 production compared to other animal protein• Lowest environmental footprint• A very important selling point in the developed world for the future

Traditional species

• Fresh water: carp, trout

• Species for restocking/enhancing in lakes and rivers

• Saltwater: salmon

Pond farming

• Total fish pond area in the EU is about 350000 ha

• A production that preserves tradition and nature

• Pond fish farms are integrated into the environment and the landscape and contribute to preserve biodiversity

Traditional species

• Traditional species are efficient to grow

• Most traditional species are fast growing species• The fish are adapted to farm conditions – domesticated• The best specimens have been selected for years (behavior – growth)• Ponds in Lithuania since year 1500…

• In agriculture business: A few very effective species today optimised over thousands of years (cattle, pig, chicken)

• Salmon max. 40 generations in Norway • Now: special salmon breed for steaks or for smoking

Traditional species

• Downside:• Hard competition on the market - increasing all the time

• Import from aquaculture and captured fisheries

• Environmental restrictions (RAS)

• Access to land. Competition with other users (sports fishing, nature groups, military, etc.)

• Upside: • Easier to estimate output

• Less risks/uncertainties

• Known investments

• Optimisation on mass production at large scale (1000ton trout RAS farms and more…)

Upcoming species

• Fresh water: sturgeon, African catfish, pike-perch

• Salt water: yellow-tailed amberjack (Kingfish), white leg shrimp (Vannemei), tiger shrimp (monodon)

Latvia - Sturgeon: MOTTRA caviar house

Hungary – African catfishSzarvasfish Kft and Győri Előre Htsz

• African catfish 3350tons/year (28°C)

• Utilising geothermal water sources

• Local price H+G: 0,7-0,8 EUR/kg

• Total employment 14-16 people

Hungary – other species

• Syberian sturgeon (Acipenser baeri)

• Paddlefish (Polyodon spatula)

Denmark, Pike-perch

Aquapri.dk

• 10000m2 closed facilities started in 2016

• Aquapri has worked for years to close the reproduction circle

• RAS, Temp 20-23°C, currently 800.000 fish.

• 500tonnes in 2016; 700tonnes in 2017

• Size grading is needed - VERY often

Pike-perch

• The capture of wild pike-perch is stable 7-9000ton and is not expected to rise (captured fish are mostly consumed locally)

• Investment 9 million EUR

• Market price 8-11 EUR/kg for gourmet restaurants, fresh (unfrozen) to the sushi market (main markets Germany, Austria and Switzerland)

• Green listed by WWF (wild version red listed)

• Whiteleg shrimp (vannamei)• 3-4 fours years trial production• 2,5 tonnes – current annual production• Delivery at local restaurants (30-35 EUR/kg) - 35 gram• Construction plans spring in 2017, 3-4 tonnes- depending on EU support• Expansion plans to US, Ukraine, Russia and UK • Fry from hatcheries in US (Texas/Florida)• Long term plan for own hatchery

• Started in 2014

• Whiteleg shrimp (Vannamei) and tiger shrimp (Monodon) (fry from Florida)

• March 2015 - test plant (30°C - excess heat from a power plant)

• Four harvests per year

• Shrimp organic frozen (37 EUR/kg - fresh…. 60EUR/kg)

• Long term - Organic certification

Future perspectives

• RAS saltwater

• Eel

• Copepod eggs

• Market channel options

Salmon in saltwater RAS

• 2013 Langsand laks - 1000 tonnes annual

• 2015 Danish salmon – 2000 tonnes annual

• Some start-up problems

• Should be on track now

• Will start production in 2016

• 1200 tonnes

• When fully expanded 4800 tonnes

• Investment 11 mill EUR

• Support 4 mill EUR

• Employment for

50 people

Denmark – eeleel-hatch.dk

• Ongoing project to establish

breeding and hatchery technology

for commercial production of

glass ell

4 mill EUR – end 2017

New ”species” is a stable supply of copepod eggs for Marine fish species• Higher marine fish survival rate in their first live stages. Feed for early

life stages all marine species (Ell/Cod/Tuna/Halibut/Sea bass/Turbut)

• No diseases and parasites

• Possibility to adapt the Acartia to the specific fish species nutritional need by changing the nutritional value of the microalgae feed.
