Six Ways to Resist the Trap of Overabundance and Create Traditions

Brimming with GratitudeBy Sara Wiseman

Are you dreading it, already? You know… the whole shopping-gifting-cooking-cleaning-eating-drinking socializing-relatives-traveling season just ahead? From Thanksgiving to New Year’s, many of us get trapped in a cycle of overabundance, the state of having too much. As in: more than we can use. More than we can process. The cup not just full, but overflowing. It’s gotten worse in recent years, starting with Christmas decorations that go on display at Halloween to the frenzy of Black Friday. We’ve become a culture of excess and a society of waste, moving from the next new thing to the next, without ever taking the time to enjoy any of it. We have so much, and it’s arriving so fast, that we can’t use or even experience it all. This overabundance – having more than we really need – creates stress, lowers vibration, and zaps energy from mind, body, and spirit. Now, I’m all for abundance. I’m certainly not one to pass up on anything that brings pleasure or beauty or connection to my life. But when we become trapped in the cycle of overabundance – the endless circle of want-get, want-get – our lives fall out of balance.

Six ways overabundance causes holiday stress

During the holidays, overabundance shows up in different forms. It’s not just eating rich foods or excessive gifts, as you’d expect, but less obvious ways as well, including: too much socializing, complex family relationships, rigid tradition, and low-vibration group thought. Here, are six areas where overabundance can create stress in your life:

Ten Ways to Jumpstart A Holiday

Filled with Gratitude1. Travel outside of peak season, if you travel at all. Booking a flight Christmas day instead of Christmas eve is an entirely different experience.

2. Limit gifts to small, inexpensive tokens. Or gift “experiences” instead.

3. Make a bucket list of what you really love about the holidays: walking in the snow, sleeping in, watching Frosty the Snowman. Do these, and let the rest go.

4. Graciously decline invites that no longer fit. A simple, “I’m sorry, we can’t make it” is all you need.

5. Sleep, rest, be still. It is winter.

6. Play cards, catch, dolls… connect with younger ones and your younger self.

7. Sing.

8. Revisit the holidays as holy days. Go to church, if that feels right, or to a spiritual service in your community. Celebrate winter solstice as end of darkness and arrival of light.

9. Give hugs, the best gift of all.

10. Get emotional, feel it all and celebrate, in your heart. Life is a miracle.

Sara Wiseman says that “During the holidays, overabundance shows up in different forms. It’s not just eating rich foods or excessive gifts, as you’d expect, but less obvious ways as well, including: too much socializing, complex family relationships, rigid tradition and low vibration group thought.” She offers grounded solutions to apply this holiday season.

Focus On Joy!If you’re reading this, I’m sure you’ve have heard about writing gratitude lists. November is typically the time we read and hear a lot about gratitude – at least in the United States – since we celebrate Thanksgiving this month. Gratitude lists are a great thing to write and to keep because this practice makes us focus more on what we have than on what we don’t have. Writing down, or even thinking about, the good in our lives can change our entire energy for the better. I would like to propose another practice than can go deeper than gratitude lists: writing a joy list. Joy is deeper than the simple feeling of gratitude we experience when something goes right in our lives or we acquire something we’ve been wanting such as a car, house, boyfriend, or girlfriend. Joy dives right to the soul level. Grab a piece of paper, a 3 x 5 index card, or open a file on your computer or smartphone and write: My Joy List. Then pay attention to the times you feel joy in your heart. There doesn’t have to be reason behind the feelings of joy. In fact, I have found that many times joy shows up for no apparent reason: it simply is. Here are some things someone might write down on their joy list: Seeing my grandchild. Sitting in meditation. Cuddling with my dog or cat. Seeing the little yellow flower by my backdoor. Hearing the morning birds singing. The hot shower this morning. Breathing the fresh morning air. Listening to a Mozart concerto. Looking at a work of art. Sitting in a cathedral. These are not things one acquires or owns. They are experiences that open our hearts to the greatness of our lives, to the beauty of our world, to the feelings of being alive and aware of our own aliveness. When we focus on these feelings of joy that are internally generated, we attract more of these feelings and eventually find

ourselves capable of feeling joy no matter what’s going on in our lives. Joy is the energy that underlies all of creation, even the creations that seem less than joyful. And when we can learn to focus on these feelings rather than on what we do or don’t have, life blooms in all its fullness. No longer does it matter whether or not our pet project succeeds. No longer does it matter whether or not the person we think we are attracted to is attracted to us. No longer does it matter whether or not we have thousands of dollars in the bank. By feeling this deep level of inner joy, we touch our true selves, the part of us who is in constant joy no matter what is happening in the outer world. And when we touch this part of ourselves and live in contact with it, we are finally living our lives. You can see why I said a joy practice goes far beyond a simple gratitude practice. It is deeper, much deeper. Try it and see.

Being intuitive is a natural part of being human, and we each have a unique way that the universe speaks to us. It’s just that most of us are too distracted by thoughts, emotional patterns, and habitual behavior to listen closely enough to what the universe is trying to say. So what exactly is intuition? Intuition is the flow of divine guidance running like a current through our lives. It’s the thread that connects our awareness to everything in the universe, each other, and our destiny. We can learn to listen more closely to this flow of guidance through our feeling sense, our knowingness, our dreams and visions, and the signs and symbols we see in our daily life. Intuition arises naturally when there is a clear space within. When there is stillness, and silence, which comes from not pushing or pulling on life with our egoic agenda. When we can come to a place of just being

with what is, in this moment now. It’s a surrender; surrendering our judgments and our personal will, so that there can be space for divine will to arise uninhibited within us, and reveal to us our true path. Often we want to activate our intuition so we can get somewhere or be someone other than who we are right now. We feel like if we could just see and hear our guides, and know what the universe wants us to do, then we could finally be who we want to be and escape the feelings of pain, struggle, and lack we experience now. There’s a feeling of being insufficient – of not-enough-ness – that accompanies that kind of intention, which leads to self-judgment and self-doubt, which are the two major killers of intuition. My way of teaching intuitive development then is more about cultivating humility, self-love, and aware presence, which form the foundations for true intuitive awakening. So what do these three keys to allowing intuition to open really mean? Let’s break it down: Humility – A lot of times the concept of humility gets misunderstood on the spiritual path, and is internalized as thinking that we should put ourselves below others, and not outshine anyone or ask for too much from life. This is really just low-self esteem in disguise. True humility is the willingness to face ourselves and be 100% honest with ourselves about how we feel in each

moment. We don’t need to pump ourselves up to impress others, and we don’t need to cut ourselves down to avoid being rejected by others. We can just be as we are, and honor that, however that may look from the outside. With humility, we can learn to recognize the voice of the divine verses the voice of our ego when it speaks to us. Self-Love – The only way to break the cycle of self-judgment and self-doubt is through self-love. Self-love is not a state, it is something that has to be practiced with dedication each day, and then grows over time. It’s a choice we make, when something happens that upsets us. We can choose to beat ourselves up, or we can choose to love ourselves instead. We simply say to our heart,“I love you. I love you. Even though this happened, I am here to love you.” We let our feelings be what they are, and we love ourselves through it. It may feel fake at first when we have spent so many years in self-judgment and blame, being critical of ourselves. But even saying the words creates a ripple effect through our energy body, allowing us to be more and more receptive to it the more often we say it, and soon we start feeling the love sinking in on deeper and deeper levels. Self-love is also about making loving choices for ourselves; treating ourselves the way we would treat our most beloved friend; giving ourselves the most nutritional foods, lots of rest, and time to enjoy the things and people we love. This opens our heart, and puts us more in alignment with divine will, which always gives us the most loving choices. Aware Presence – This is something that all people who meditate on a regular basis are working to cultivate. It’s the ability to step back from being so caught up in the

activity of being human,( thinking, doing, etc.), and resting in the space of awareness that some people call being the witness. The witness doesn’t push anything in its experience away, nor does it try and grasp at anything out of a feeling of lack. Those are all actions of the ego, which is constantly either pushing away or grasping towards, keeping us locked in the cycle of not-enough-ness. It’s not about trying to overcome the ego, or demonizing it in any way. The ego is a part of us, it makes us the individuals we are, though if given too much power, it starts to dominate our experience. When we can practice being the aware presence, we see ego and all its desires, and we simply acknowledge them for what they are, without feeding into them. This is tricky. And it takes years of practice, and a good foundation of self-love and humility. But when enough awareness is present, it creates the clear space within that allows intuition to be revealed, and gives us the personal freedom to follow it. We all have intuitive guidance that comes to us in many ways, whether we are aware of it or not. Eventually, as the ego-based personal will starts to unravel through humility, self-love, and aware presence, divine will acts through us, in our thoughts, words, and actions, and we no longer experience a separateness from our source. Intuition becomes the natural guiding system for our life, as spiritual beings having a human experience, and we can live freely and joyfully in this moment, falling in line with the bigger picture we know we are all a part of.

In a survey I saw some years ago, it indicated that “maintaining mental sharpness” was the number one health issue for 65% of the people questioned. For many people, poor brain function equates to poor quality of life. There is no doubt that we live in a society that demands our brains work 100%; we constantly juggle acts, inputs, information, tasks, responsibilities, and process emotions. How could we really do without our brain at full tilt?

Here are five steps you can follow for better brain health through your decades: 1. Eat like you live in the Mediterranean: Studies with animals have shown us that a high-fat, high refined carbohydrate diet is probably not so good for our noodle. Although the research in humans is still not entirely conclusive, the basic gist of what we know to date is that the more one can follow a Mediterranean way of eating (i.e., fish, fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, legumes, spices, extra virgin olive oil), the more our brains may be protected from decline and dementia, especially if we have type 2 diabetes, when the risk increases two-fold. Since brain decline is linked to blood sugar balance, it’s important to consider a “modified” Mediterranean diet so you do not eat much of the high glycemic impact carbohydrates that can spike blood sugar. Put the focus on high-fiber legumes, non-gluten-containing whole grains, and nuts for sugar-stabilizing action. 2. Go for blue: Some rather compelling animal studies suggest that blueberries are brain superstars. As one of the lead researchers at Tufts University was quoted, “Call the blueberry the brain berry.” In these studies, blueberry supplementation in the diet of rats for a number of weeks led to remarkably beneficial changes in learning and memory. It was fascinating that the blueberry supplementation seemed to play a role in resculpting the brain in such a way to make it more “plastic,” or flexible with respect to the communication between neurons. The researchers went as far as stating that blueberries may help to reverse brain aging. The human equivalent used in the study

was calculated to be about one-half cup of blueberries per day. Of course, I always like to aim for the small, organically-grown, “stressed” blueberries that tend to be higher in phytonutrients than their plump, sugary counterparts. 3. Spice it up with curry: If I was stranded on a desert island and had to survive, I would want my turmeric root, or even better, curcumin, which comes from turmeric, mostly because it’s such a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compound. Researchers have theorized that the historically low rates of dementia in India is because of their use of curry. When it comes to the brain, not only can curcumin protect the brain cells, but it can also prevent the build-up of the protein, beta-amyloid, one of the hallmarks of dementia. You can try curry any which way you’d like; one of my favorites is to make a salmon curry (where you also get the benefits of the omega-3 fats in the salmon together with the curcumin in the curry) or to include it into a smoothie, what I like to call a “turmeric milkshake,” with almonds, coconut milk, a couple of pitted dates, and a heaping tablespoon of the curry spice. 4. Just move: That’s right, just move your body. Choose whatever form you like, and whatever you’re physically capable of based on your health condition(s). Whatever your movement of choice is, try to incorporate some aerobic activity – biking, yoga, walking, running, swimming, riding a stationary bike or a real one – are all great options. Take walks, even short ones, but make them regular throughout the week.

Eating and Living for a Better Brain

And at the same time, the statistics are showing us increased rates of cognitive decline and dementia, along with mental health issues rising to be one of the biggest health issues in the 21st century. With all that said, you’re probably scratching your head wondering what you can do to prevent the downslide which starts in some people as young as age 40. Can you make your mind even sharper than it is if it is at maximum capacity? Probably not. But can you buffer your brain against mild decline and even more severe reduced function with dementia by taking some steps in what you eat and how you live? The research would suggest a resounding yes.

Research suggests you can buffer your brain against mild decline and even more severe reduced function with dementia by taking some steps in what you eat and how you live.

The brain thrives on oxygen and needs it to perform well. By getting some aerobic exercise, you replenish the brain with the fuel it requires. Studies show that physical activity helps in improving the integrity of your brain matter and can help you retain information for a longer period of time compared to not exercising. 5. Let go of shrinking stress: Stress shrinks certain parts of the brain. Therefore, it’s essential to choose a stress-modulation practice that you enjoy, whether yoga, meditation, or mindfulness. Studies show that yoga may have some benefits in promoting a healthy mood, and meditation sessions can do the same. In fact, one study showed that the more one meditates, the better one’s mood and the lower the amount of inflammation in the body; two thumbs up for the brain! Meditation can also help with promoting healthy blood flow to the brain, which means you’re delivering more oxygen and nutrients to the precious tissue. Mindfulness practice assists in fine-tuning one’s ability to pay attention and even leads to increases in brain gray matter density, which is a good thing if your brain is stressed and shrunk. Keeping your gray matter bright with brilliance is definitely within reach no matter what your age. These five, simple lifestyle medicine steps will shine light on your path forward into the decades to come.

BrainBy Linda Joy Crutcher

The Secret suggests that people focus only on the positive in order to create a constructive and optimistic feedback in terms of attraction. In other words, what we put out, we get back tenfold. The law of attraction certainly can work, but why doesn’t it work? The reason most people can’t make it work is because mind in this realm is subject to duality, dual thinking. We live in a world of opposites: highs and lows, good and bad, dark and light, devil and god. We simply, by virtue of living in a world of dual thinking, will never truly emit only positivity until we can see, understand, and accept all of our experiences and thoughts as positive. We are programmed to separate, deny, and resist negativity that keeps us from integrating with it. We can only integrate with what negatively occurs by understanding beyond what occurs. Freedom to love and send out love in the worst conditions only comes through understanding, and sometimes that understanding can only be found by looking objectively into the circumstances of an event. Take school shootings, for example. How can anyone extract something positive from such a horrific event? One way is to ask ourselves why our youth are doing this, and by taking ownership of our part in what others create. We have fed our children violence in the form of entertainment for so long that they have become desensitized and play out the video games they watch. Awareness of this alone is a good thing and should cause us to change what we’re doing. These negative patterns will repeat until we get the message and change what we do. No matter what the conscious mind decides to do, the subconscious mind will override it if the information stored there contradicts our intentions. Mastery over duality comes when we finally see and accept that negative is positive, because from it, we gain some valuable awareness individually or collectively, regardless of how slight or great. There is much conflict when this idea is suggested, however, as it implies that we are condoning bad or evil actions. This is not true. Finding the value from negative experiences and actions does not mean we approve of them. It simply means that we must search to find something valuable that comes out

Does The Secret Really Work?of those events, no matter how seemingly small, in order to create a positive outlook and emit positive energy. We can only emit positively when we maintain a loving consciousness. We must do this if our desire is for like return in energy. When we resonate with the destructive or negative side of events, that is, see them at the level of vision that is inherent to our separated natures, we are “being” the thing that we see and emitting more negativity into the situation. We remain in duality instead of rising above it and send out vibrations of judgment and condemnation instead of love. Because we are programmed about right and wrong, good and bad, etc., there is a monumental conflict when it comes to seeing negative events as positive. We stand alone and isolated from each other, our faiths, and societies when we attempt to make horrific things right in our minds. But again, if we cannot find some value in them, to change the way we see these things, we will never experience the truth of what The Secret suggests. The Secret tells us we can attract all kinds of things into our lives like money, jobs, houses, cars, love, and so on, by visualizing our desires and emitting positive attitudes and energy. Why does this work for some people and not others? The higher self knows what we need and what we’re trying to learn in this incarnation. It is the “I Am” level of mind. We, at the human level believe the things of our desires will change our lives and make us happier or better in some way, but the “I Am” knows; it alone is the key to fulfilling our desires. Both minds are ours, and they are in opposition. Attracting the stuff of the world will only prevail when the human mind doesn’t actually want what it thinks it needs.

Guided Afterlife Connections

A New Grief Therapy Method:

Remember, “Seek ye first the Kingdom and all things shall be added unto thee.” This happens automatically when we have no need for things to fill us up or complete us in some way. I’m sure we can all relate to how easily things come to us when we decide to let go of the fight. The same is true with relationships; when we struggle to find one, it doesn’t happen; when we give up the idea, they’re waiting in line. When we let go of resistance, our need to control what we attract, suddenly what we need appears. We’re all searching for the self within that sees through positive eyes. When we can do that, the need to attract anything material ceases to exist because through those eyes, love fills every need and is self-contained; it lacks nothing. This means that when one finally masters consciousness to a point of emitting only positive thoughts, one’s entire realm of what’s important changes. One enters into a realm devoid of any need for material satisfaction and when that happens, we become magnets and simply enjoy the abundance.

Open Minds, Open Hearts, Open Doors

Regular exercise is very important for the physical and mental health of our dogs. Going on regular walks, taking hikes to special places, playing at the dog park or in our own yard are just more pleasant and easier to do in good weather. So how can we keep our dogs well exercised – which leads to calmer and better behavior – when the time of year is not conducive? Now that I have a very energetic, one-year-old, Golden Retriever who is in need of lots of exercise, I am finding answers to that question. There are actually some very good choices that make it fairly easy especially if you have a small dog. I am not going to talk much about the usual games and things we do with our dogs for fun and to blow off steam like retrieving balls, sticks, or Frisbees, except to say that if you have a small dog, you can often move those games inside in bad weather. You can throw retrieving items up and down a hallway, large room, or staircase. Please, no staircase chases for long body dogs like dachshunds and corgis. I do not think that is a safe game for them even if they are in good shape. I recommend using a high value food reward to motivate your dog. A food reward, in order to be effective, only needs to be large enough to taste, so keep them very small. You

Come-When-Called Game Start this game in a large room with one person on each end of the room. Both people have food rewards for the dog in their pockets. With the dog’s attention on one of the humans, the other one calls the dog, “Bozo, come here.” Make it sound happy and encourage if needed. Treat the dog on arrival. As soon as the dog has been treated, the opposite person calls the dog and you continue back and forth. The dog will anticipate quickly and start to head back before being called. When they do that they are not rewarded. The one they ran to just ignores them on arrival and the other person calls the dog back. Expand this game to the entire house, callers in different rooms or on different floors of the house. This game can also be moved outside.

Calisthenics Large or small,

all dogs can do doggie calisthenics in the kitchen or family room. Use a small food reward and do doggie pushups by asking your dog to sit, then down, then sit, etc. Put the food right at their nose and guide them to start. Do them very fast, withholding the

food until they have done lots of ups and downs.

Collapse Downs

Collapse downs, as I like to call them, are very good for the dog

physically. Start with the dog in a

stand position, put the food reward at his nose and then move it down and backwards

towards the floor so the dog collapses backwards into

a down without

can use pieces of the dog’s dry food but I prefer a soft, fast-to-eat treat like cheese or pieces of meat. If your dog is not food-motivated you can use a favorite toy. Here are some great games to get started with. Some require two people:

Hide and Seek One person holds the dog while the other takes a food reward and goes off to hide somewhere in the house. The holder tells the dog to “Find Dad or Mom or Susie or Joe.” Take the dog on an exaggerated hunt if they do not yet understand and help them find the hider. The person hiding treats the dog immediately upon being found with lots of praise from both humans. Trade places. Start simple and easy. Then get more and more creative with the hiding places. This game can also be played outside. When you do not have two people, one person can hide treats around the house for the dog to find. Start simple and let the dog see you “hide” the treat and keep it visible at first until they understand the game.

moving forward. Use another food reward to lure him back up into a stand and repeat several times.

Spin and Twirl This exercise can really blow off steam. Put a food reward on their nose, tell them “spin” and slowly move the food toward their tail so they begin to turn. Keep luring them slowly until they make it all the way around and give the food with lots of praise. Once they learn the spin, teach them the opposite direction and command “twirl.” As they get it, withhold the food until they have done at least three rapid turns in both directions.

This game has become my Robbie’s all-time fav

My trainer calls it a flirt line. It really begins with a horse lunge whip or buggy whip. This is a relatively new game in the dog world but it is so popular, dog toy companies are already making small versions for little dogs. I have seen them in local pet stores recently (Tail Teasers) and on Amazon. I made ours with a full size sturdy lunge whip, about five feet long with the same length of whip. For smaller dogs get a mini-horse lunge whip. Tie a toy on the end. My preferred toy is a Skinneez. They are long with squeakers and no stuffing and look like a fake squirrel or rabbit. You can find them on Amazon, pet stores and grocery stores. Stand in the middle while your dog chases the toy in a circle around you. Depending on the breed, your dog may keep chasing or they may try to cut off the toy. They will run hard and jump and flip for the toy but I do not recommend the jump and flip part for safety issues.

Yoga Gifts for the

HolidaysBy Ronan Bennett

One of the sheer joys of being a yoga teacher is that I see the breathtaking array of equipment that helps people in their very individual needs and enhances their individual and specific talents. In other words, good equipment enhances talents and develops yogis to a higher state. And, finding the caliber of equipment, props and products available from Gaiam is a crowing success for me as a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) and yoga coach. I got a sneak-peak at some brand new products from Gaiam. May I introduce them to you? I’m really excited about some things that will be supportive for many people.

Sol Dry Grip Yoga Mat This single-sided mat is 5 mm thick. When I compare it to other mats I have used, I find it provides a softer, more comfortable barrier between the hands and the floor, yet I felt perfectly secure in my stance and connection to support me through all the asanas of three vinyasa classes. With the addition of the mat’s ability to remain dry (how did they do that?) and grippy during this sweaty yogi’s

workouts, I am very impressed. You’ll find this to be a safe and secure addition to your practice mats. And, hey, it’s got a design that is impressed in a black on black appearance that had a lot of folks eyeing it during my last class.

Marrakesh Mat Tote Bag This is my first bag other than the tube-style end loading bags that I have used for many years. Larger and capacious, there’s room for a rolled-up mat, straps, and a small foam roller (see that review, too) for this yogi-on-the-go. This bag has three snaps

that latch and separate fairly easily opening at the top. This bag has a nice and simple pattern on the front. I think most of the ladies know the problem of having too large of a bag; things get lost and gravitate toward the bottom, right? Problem solved. With a system of pockets and zippers, I could easily and almost systematically stash keys, ID, and a little cash without a concern. I

think the best part is that after I got my gear out for class, the bag folds up perfectly for those friendly

little yoga-cubbies we have.

Yoga Clutch Okay. Being a male

yogi in the female-dominated western yoga scene offers its

own set of challenges. However, when others see a

man with a yoga clutch the eyebrows raise a little higher. I have co-opted a sensible item and claimed its use for my yoga-brethren. I chose the coffee colored clutch that matches the Marrakesh Tote (in lieu of the pink so as not to stretch it too far). It holds my wallet, change, cell phone, and watch. My car keys fit in there as well, so I do not have to spend minutes digging for them in the bottom of a regular bag after class. The clutch is interesting because it is made from yoga mat material. Now it’s true that one of my yogini friends kind of eyed my clutch

This is the time of year when many of us become involved in giving gifts to celebrate our various traditions and holidays. To make gift-giving a little easier, we’ve compiled the following reviews of some products and books that were sent our way. Of course, handmade gifts are wonderful and some of the books we received are perfect in guiding you to make some of your own this year. As you do your shopping, please remember to support our brick and mortar stores as well as the online retailers. And remember to give yourself and others the gift of time and love, two things that are truly priceless!

quizzically. I looked straight into that raised eyebrow and said: “New dude yoga clutch.”

Sure Grip headband Sigh. Here again not only is there a guy in the yoga class, he is wearing a headband. I loved the head shaking from my friends in yoga class. I had the good foresight of choosing the black band, hoping not to attract too much attention, but oh well. The first time I tried this out was uneventful, or so I thought. I left it in my Marrakesh bag during my second class. Unfortunately, I missed it after about 10 minutes when sweat was running down my face and into my eyes. As my glasses slid down my nose and I reached for my face towel, I regretted not putting on the Sure Grip Headband this evening. Guys and gals: leave your face towel in your bag. Once you have donned this stylish two-inch headband, the moisture will not run into your face. The band stays in place and can be easily forgotten, without ever feeling too tight or constrictive. I am ordering another soon.

Compact Foam Roller After that class of stretching and yoga, using Self-Myofascial Release (SMR) often relieves and prevents sore muscles. SMR is a fancy acronym for foam rolling. This 12-inch long roller can be stored in the Marrakesh bag until after class. Handy and small enough, you can use it when it matters most: right after savasana for maximum muscle comfort. This roller is small enough to carry with you. Pull it out of your bag before class to warm up or at the end of class to cool down. And, thankfully, this appears in a gender-neutral shade of green. Yoga Mat Wipes The best time to clean your favorite dry grip yoga mat is right after class before rolling it up. Pull one of these wipes out of the package, and give your mat a quick once-over so you can roll up a fresh clean mat to be used in the next class or session. This will help keep the mat sanitized and so it can be kept in use longer. These wipes come 20 to a package and fit easily with everything else in the Marrakesh tote. The solution dries quickly, so it only makes good sense to use the wipes specially formulated for the buoyant surfaces of expansive mats.

Yoga Books for the

HolidaysReviewed by Krysta Gibson

In December, New World Library is releasing a new book perfect for holiday gifting: Pick Your Yoga Practice, exploring and understanding different styles of yoga by Meagan McCrary. You thought yoga is yoga? Think again. This book explores seven core styles of yoga, plus an additional 10 systems described in the Best of the Rest chapter. Did you know there are six main branches of yoga? Where does your practice fit in? After you choose a style, what can you expect when you visit the class? What are the philosophical underpinnings of a particular system or practice? Are you getting bored with your current style and want to explore something new? This book will help you become a more aware student and will help you find teachers and classes in the various styles. Whether new to yoga or a long-time practitioner, this book is a valuable resource you or your yoga-practicing friend will want to have. Here’s another idea: how about taking your yoga practice off the mat and into the work place? Did you know that the physical yoga postures are only one part of what is known as the Eight Limbs of Yoga? There’s a book called Yoga Wisdom at Work by husband-wife team Maren and Jamie Showkeir (Berrett-Koehler Publishers) that offers great suggestions about how to integrate yoga’s ancient philosophy and spiritual principles into the modern workplace. Filled with practical suggestions and stories, it can help any yoga practitioner learn how to move far beyond a simple physical practice into one that impacts every second of every day; what a great plan for the new year. For the yoga enthusiast who really wants to dig deeper into the true study of yoga or union with God, there is a new book about the Yoga Sutras called Demystifying Patanjali (Crystal Clarity) by Swami Kriyananda. This book begs to be studied and meditated upon to unlock the secrets of life it shares.

Maybe Some NewSupplements? (Remember to always check with your healthcare provider before taking any new products). From REDD Remedies comes these interesting products you might want to try or gift. In*Joy is gluten-free and is said to “Provide essential nutrients and adaptogen herbs that provide a platform for the mind and body to control and regulate the stress response and uplift mood.” Naturally uplifting, it is said to promote emotional health. The same company has inhalers for several purposes. We tried the ones for energy (said to optimize energy, stamina, and mental focus) and lung care (said to promote healthy lung function and clear respiratory passages). Both have therapeutic-quality essential oils, smell wonderful and seemed to do what they are intended for. What a great way to package and use essential oils! Reddremedies.com NaturaNectar uses an exclusive Brazilian Bee Propolis as the main ingredient in their line of products. According to the company, “Red Propolis has been found to promote pancreatic cell health, blood cell

heath, hormonal health, and has the highest antioxidant score when compared to all foods in the USDA database for this score.” We tried the Gastro Guardian that is said “to promote stomach comfort, digestion, reduce gas and offer travel protection from the effects of unknown foods.” It seems to provide the results stated and we would recommend trying it if

digestive issues are a concern (after checking with your health care professional, of course).

Coffee Table Books If you know someone with a coffee table who likes to put big meaningful books on it, here are three ideas for them. Everyday Heaven, Live Each Extraordinary Day by Cheryl Dalsanders is an oversized square book that measures 12” x 12”. The book contains beautiful color photographs with quotes and ideas that can inspire and enlighten. Each chapter lets you visit a color and a season so you can meditate and apply the teachings to your daily life. Heart and soul went into this book and I can’t imagine

anyone not loving it. A Year at Stonehenge by James O. Davies is exactly that. Davies has been photographing Stonehenge for over 15 years and then was given special access for five years where he was able to take photos not allowed to most visitors. The result is a stunning book with enticing photos as well as information about this mysterious construction estimated to having been

built in 3100 BC. Why is it that churches and places of worship hold special energy? The Secret Language of Sacred Spaces by Jon Cannon gives some clues. Through photos and words, this book explores the codes and meanings of the world’s places of worship and helps us understand what makes these places feel sacred. Learn what makes a Hindu temple different from a Buddhist one or why a church looks so different from a synagogue or mosque. Filled with wonderful information, this book will solidify your respect and honor for all religions and traditions.

For Tarot Enthusiasts

Around the Tarot in 78 Days, A Personal Journey Through the Cards by Marcus Katz and Tali Goodwin (Llewellyn Books) is a different sort of tarot book. Although it can be used as a reference book for the meaning of the cards, it goes much farther and deeper than. Each day is devoted to one card and through this system, the user is taught various spreads, meanings and relationships of various cards, as well as information about tarot and the Tree of Life. Intriguing, well-written, and a lot of fun, the tarot readers in your life will welcome this book. And if that person loves animals, especially cats, get them a copy of Black Cats Tarot by Maria Kurara. Using the basic ideas from the

Smoothies are the rage these days, not only for the delicious taste they offer but for the great nutrition they can provide. The Green Smoothie Bible by Kristine Miles gives recipes based on the seasons of the year as well as particular health interests a person might have. The author also teaches the basics behind successful smoothies so you can make your own combinations. This next book is a gift in itself or you could use it

to make gifts to give to others. Called Meals in a Jar by Julie Languille step-by-step instructions are given for everything from breakfast Omelet in a Bag to lentil soup and Rustic Pie. The meals created are meant to be

prepared ahead of time and then brought to life through the addition of water or other ingredients. The Natural Soap Chef will take you through the steps to make good old-fashioned soap based on the process of saponification. The process begins with learning how to work with lye (be careful) and various oils and ends up with delightful soap you can’t find in the grocery store. Getting Organized and

Planning in 2014 Keeping up with Mercury Retrogrades, moon void of courses, and other astrological events becomes easy with Llewellyn’s 2014 Daily Planetary Guide. It gives a wonderful basic introduction to astrology, explains how to use the book and then provides a weekly planner to keep track of your schedule. For the Wiccan or Pagan in your life, get Llewellyn’s Witch’s Wall Calendar. Each month gives correspondences such as stones, animals, flowers, and ruling planet, plus original art, fun essays, and spells by some favorite Wiccan authors. The Life Organizer (New World Library) by Jennifer Louden originally came out as a beautiful hardback book in 2007. Now it is being released in paperback. Based on a more intuitive approach to

planning, there are 13 planning sections that can be used however best suits a woman’s organizing style. The author calls it an “interactive guidebook, a collection of possibilities with life and your gifts.” Someone who wants a unique and supportive way to focus on manifesting their dreams this year would find this an intriguing and welcome gift. The Best 10 Years of Your Life, but Let’s Plan on 20! by Scotty Bruer is a great how-to make and reach goals book that is also very inspirational. The author shares his story (which is most interesting) and then leads the reader through his four-step plan: love, believe, plan, achieve. This book includes a “90-Day Launch Pad” to get you started and a mail-

in offer for a 20-year planning wall calendar. A fabulous gift to help someone plan their life.

Once they catch the toy, get them to run around you with it. I make this happen by pretending the game is over and I am trying to take the toy away from Robbie. He will run and run around me as I sing a “Robbie’s runnin‘ the rabbit” song that really gets

By Christine Wushke

I was once given a teaching in a dream that helped me understand the distinction between the permanent and the impermanent. The understanding of this dream enabled me to embrace life as it is. It showed me that all of life is transient, and I can be free to enjoy the ups in life without grasping at them, and recognize that the downs in life are also temporary and so there is no need to try and make them “go away.” The following dream took place during a particularly challenging phase of my life; I had gone to bed one night feeling hopeless and drained and fell asleep in a state of despair and exhaustion.

I had a very vivid dream that I was dead. In the dream there was someone beside me that I couldn’t see, but I could hear a voice and feel a loving presence. I remember feeling really sad and

two minutes. In a blink I was dropped back down to earth in my familiar body, but surrounded by totally different circumstances. In this new scenario I had just found out that the love of my life was having an affair with another woman and I was feeling heartbroken and alone. Elated with being back, I didn’t care about the “scene” going on around me, I felt relieved and grateful just to be back. Knowing my two minutes would be up soon I soaked in every precious second of heartbreak, sorrow, betrayal, and loss. After getting pulled out of this scene and back to the “dead” state, I asked again if I could please be allowed to go back for just two minutes more. The voice agreed and I was allowed to go back. This time I was dropped into yet another totally different scenario. In this one I was happily married but we were going bankrupt and losing everything we owned. Knowing that the two minutes were fleeting, I soaked in every second of financial distress, worry, and uncertainty. Once more I was pulled out, floating in deadness with the loving voice. Again I asked to go back, and again I was given that wish. This time I became aware of an interesting time distortion. In the scene around me everything was falling apart, I was feeling the impossibility of “holding

it together.” Knowing the two minutes would end soon I drank in “falling apart” and the feeling of losing control. I noticed that what felt to me like two minutes was different than the timeline playing out in the scene around me. Hours were racing by in the situation around me, while my two minutes were slowly ticking by. At some point I became aware that I was dreaming and a very lucid thought, “Okay, you have made your point,” shattered the dream.

I found myself lying in bed, staring at the ceiling. For a few minutes I drank in the sensation of being alive, really alive. I drank in what it meant to be human, and the sweetness of all the things we experience here. Being able to see clearly the distinction between what is fleeting and what is permanent enables us to drink-in life as it is. It offers us the space to remember that a human life is transitory, emotions come and go, human experience is so very brief, and yet, right behind it there is something so powerful, yet subtle, something ever-present that doesn’t change. That backdrop can be noticed in any moment by looking at that which is noticing the comings and goings of life. The awareness that notices is the same as your eternal essence. That awareness is ever present and can never be harmed

in any way. This simple recognition opens up the space for allowing all life to simply be as it is. Just as recognizing that the moon’s cycle will change while the sky stays the same. This gives us the freedom to appreciate the moon’s presence while it is full, and the absence of the moon when it is new. Understanding impermanence teaches us that to cling to the changing brings about more struggle, and to try to manipulate aspects of life that we don’t like is as futile as trying to push the ocean’s waves. Everything within form will rise and fall like waves on the ocean. Allowing life to come and go in this way brings about an inner freedom to appreciate what is right in front of you, here and now.

directions. When the rabbit escapes, start over and have fun! Not much space is needed for this game and it really wears the dog out fast. It is great exercise. Put the whip away when not in use as this makes it more special and keeps the dog from destroying the toy.

ReadingsJoHN JENNiNgS Psychic Channel 206-417-4903.

1. Overabundance of food. Rich, sweet, fatty holiday food lowers your physical vibration, which affects mind and spirit, too. If you work in an office or with a group of people, it’s hard to escape the sweets in the break room. Alcohol from frequent social events adds to this mix. Don’t worry about weight gain; instead, be focused on the energetic signature of the food you eat. Is it processed? Will it make you feel good? Does your body really want it? Pay attention, and don’t let the season of indulgence lower your vibration. 2. Overabundance of gifts. The cycle of shopping, buying, wrapping, giving, receiving can be very stressful, even if budget is not a concern. The sheer energetic reality of involving ourselves with objects or “stuff” can be overwhelming, especially when we understand that every object has its own frequency, vibration, or

energetic signature depending on where it came from, how it was made, who made it, and so forth. This is a lot of new energy to add to your reality. Consider your energy as you decide how or if you will give and receive gifts this year. Consider your energy if you decide to do without, do less, or give experiences or to charity instead. Once you break the gift cycle, you will be surprised how free you feel. 3. Overabundance of socializing. Office parties, school events, the annual party you’ve gone to every year for 10 years, all of this has a certain clamor of “must attend” attached to it, when in reality, you can change plans, opt out, or do something different. Don’t rely on what you’ve always done; you’re a new person now, and you may want to try something different. Reassess every year. Introverts especially may need lots of private time during this season. Give yourself the gift of quiet and solitude.

Re-Imagining The HolidaysContinued from front page

4, Overabundance of family relationships. There’s that saying: you can’t go home again. And yet every holiday season, most of us continue to swim up-river to our birthing place. Many times, the wounds, past hurts, and misunderstandings are still there. And because we’re so busy during the holidays, we don’t have time to work on our relationships with our family members. Understand that family karma complex, and the stress of the holidays makes it more so. Be gentle with yourself and others. Have an exit strategy if things go awry. If it’s just too much, opt-out and try again another time. 5. Overabundance of tradition. Just because you’ve always done it a certain way, doesn’t mean you have to do it that way now. This might include going to a certain event, party, gathering, church service. Wearing certain clothes, decorating a certain way, eating certain foods, being with certain people, and so on. Break free from the rigid traditions your family has “always done” and see what else the Universe might have up its sleeve for you and yours. 6. Overabundance of group thought.

Understand the power of group thought or collective soul to affect your mood. We’ve all seen what fear-based beliefs can do to collective thought: hate, violence, financial ruin, and war are all products of low-vibration thinking. During the holidays, mindless consumption is the culprit; everyone is stressing out on want-get, want-get. This creates enormous stress, and when this is done in the collective, everyone feels it. During this time, connect to your own higher self, God/One/All/Divine/Source, frequently and deeply. Use Thanksgiving and solstice as markers for the season, times when you can easily dip into gratitude and joy.

Growing a successful business today is all about creating meaningful and long-lasting relationships with both clients and prospects. It’s fast becoming an old cliché – albeit a true one – that people only buy from people they know, like, and trust. But in this predominantly digital day and age of the Internet, how do you go about building a meaningful relationship with people that you may never actually get a chance to meet face-to-face? Well, first, never forget that there are human beings on both ends of a transaction; you and another person. Too often, through the use of websites, autoresponders, and shopping carts, it begins to feel like we are only dealing with machines. You never want your clients or prospects to feel like they are only dealing with a machine. As the owner of a business, you are your business, and people are dealing with you because of who you are; not necessarily because you have the lowest prices or the nicest office or store. And even though you now have many marvelous technological tools at your disposal to make dealing with a larger number of people possible – often worldwide – you want to make sure that no matter how large your business grows, that you never lose that “personal” touch. The tips that follow are for when you meet someone new – whether online or offline – or just want to revive an old relationship.

keep that person in mind every time you write an e-mail marketing message and you can’t go wrong.

The Postal Service Is Your Friend

Use the good old-fashioned postal service to your advantage. So few people receive any kind of personal messaging through the mail these days that this is an easy way to stand out and be remembered. As you meet new people – whether online or off – you want to be sure to get their postal mailing address, and within no more than one day, send this person a personal, hand-written note telling them, simply, how nice it was to meet them. No begging. No selling. Don’t even include a business card, just a note to make a connection. This kind of correspondence should always be hand-written even if you have the worst penmanship around. A good habit to get into is in writing a note to some of your prospects and clients every week. You could set aside a half hour each day or once a week and write a few notes to people on your list. No special occasion required, just a “thinking of you” kind of note will suffice. By writing just a few notes a day or a few each week, you’ll eventually get to everyone on your list and you’ll make a fine impression on the recipients. You can rest assured that it will pay off for you eventually if not immediately. If nothing else, you’ll have the extreme satisfaction of simply having made someone’s day.

Newsletters Are Still In Fashion

Newsletters – the printed on paper and mailed kind – have always been a great way to stay in touch with prospects and clients. A newsletter is the ideal soft-sell approach for promoting your business, and a newsletter, whether two pages or eight, or simply a postcard, could ultimately become

your best promotional tool. Your newsletter does not have to be heavy on your industry-specific information. In fact, it should go kind of light on that stuff. For example, dental patient prospects are not interested in seeing or hearing about the details of a crown or a root canal and certainly are not interested in seeing photos of bloody gums. But they are interested in information that will help them be healthier and wealthier overall and they’ll also be interested in fun, human-interest stories, games and puzzles, along with other entertaining items that focus on them. You’ll also want to keep your selling-to-content-ratio to about 20% selling and 80% relevant but fun and interesting content. Your newsletter is the perfect vehicle for letting your clients and prospects know about the various services and products you offer in a manner that won’t feel like you’re being aggressive, pushy or too “salesy.”

Just Be Yourself Building authentic relationships in the digital age may require a little thought and creative ingenuity on your part but so long as you keep your prospects’ needs paramount when planning promotions, and always let your authentic self shine through, people will respond to that in ways that will reward you both monetarily and spiritually.

Building Client Relationships in the Digital Age

Write Personal E-mails For a variety of reasons, including some legal stuff you have to follow, you do need to use an e-mail service provider, also known as an autoresponder service, to send out frequent e-mail messages to people whom you’ve met and who have asked to join your e-mail marketing list. You first start building a solid relationship via e-mail by providing an irresistible free gift when someone shares their contact info with you. Whatever you give them in exchange for their e-mail address – a video, a special report, an e-book – must have high-perceived value and contain valuable information that is tailored to your ideal client. Then, in your first few contacts with them – and this can be handled by your autoresponder – you want to set the tone for your relationship. Write to them as if you are writing only to them. Focus entirely on them so that they get the feel that you understand them, that you can commiserate with them, and that you care about helping them get their problems solved. Of course, you have to have a clear understanding of just whom you’re writing to. It’s a good idea to create an “avatar” of your ideal customer, taking into consideration what they look like and what they like and don’t like and what they expect you to deliver. Your avatar represents your ideal client and could be based entirely on one of your favorite customers or clients. Just

When I made the transition from music reviewer to researcher, I delved into the areas of sound healing and psychoacoustics (the study of sound on the nervous system). While I mainly did this through reading articles and books, I also took sound healing workshops, as well as working with psychoacoustic-produced and sound healing CDs. This opened me up to discovering how different types of music and sound resonated with different parts of my body, if not my entire body. Before I explain how music resonates throughout our bodies, I would like to back up a bit and explain the difference between music reviewing and research. I also want to qualify this with the fact that I have no formal training as a music researcher and learned these skills through intuition and work with the spirit realm. I have ample training as a music journalist.

Music Journalism verses Music Research

Music journalists (at least in the past), listen with a critical ear. A journalist worth their weight in gold has had some theory and other musical training, as well as knowledge of the genres they cover. They have a sense of music history and hopefully, the bigger picture of the music industry. They know

musicians, styles, and regional differences. They are not listening to music for sound healing purposes, but for virtuosity and entertainment value. If the word “healing” surfaces, it refers to peace concerts and community-building, not healing the body-mind. Music researchers, at least in the

alternative healing and metaphysical fields, listen to music from a standpoint of frequencies, timbre, intent, and the consciousness of the musicians involved. When I reviewed CDs for journalistic value, I was open to reviewing any style. However, as I noticed the effects of certain types of music on my body (mainly my nervous system and heart), I turned to the music research of others in both sound healing/psychoacoustics and music preservation of traditional music. Jonathan Goldman, Joshua Leeds, Marjorie De Muynck were just as important as teachers to me as were Mickey Hart and Alan Lomax. As I grew more sensitive to synthesizers, electric guitar solos in the high range, and programmed drums, I moved away from journalism and delved into music research. I encourage any of you reading this article, especially those of you who consider yourselves sensitive, to read books on psychoacoustics and the brain-music

connection. I also encourage you, if you haven’t already done so, to read Masaru Emoto’s groundbreaking books on the power of sound on water crystals. My sensitivities transformed from debilitating (with music journalism), to an essential tool (music research), for truly understanding music. I also mention that with six of my planets in mutable signs and a Grand Water Trine in which Neptune plays a powerful role, my nervous system is wired for feeling music on the deepest levels. However, I feel that anyone, bar having a disorder where they are unable to listen to music, can develop deeper listening skills that involve the whole body.

Global Music Consciousness Global music consciousness is a matter

of developing music consciousness, which begins with keeping a diary in which you track emotional and physical responses to music. The next step involves seeking out types of music that you normally would not listen to such as South African choir music, Indonesian gamelan, or tribal music from the Cook Islands, as examples. Consider that we are all the adventurous type, even if some adventurers don’t get off the couch. They can still turn off the TV and engage in

deep music listening via headphones or room ambiance. Meditate on the music and explore different parts of the body as you listen to the music. Ask yourself where the music vibrates. Is it in the solar plexus, the heart, or the crown of the head? Does the music shift your moods, with your body following accordingly? How is your posture (assuming that you’re sitting when you listen to the

music)? Does your energy level decrease or increase? If the music causes you to feel heavy then stop listening to it because this means that you have lowered your frequency. Do you notice higher tones charging your nervous system and lower bass tones relaxing your nervous system (the normal reaction)? If the music is unfamiliar to your sensibilities, what is your comfort level in listening to it? For instance, many tribal singers chant in different scales, modes, and might sound flat or sharp to our western ears. Some types of polyphonic drumming might seem jarring, and different types of instruments could sound discordant because the musicians play them in microtonal scales. Don’t worry if you feel uncomfortable the first time you listen to new music. As a music researcher who exposes herself to global music, I didn’t get the beauty of gamelan the first few times I heard it, ditto for some indigenous chants from the Pacific islands, while other types of music such as Cuban son and Brazilian samba pleased me on the spot.

Song in Your Heart In conclusion, I hope that with my work I can introduce music audiences to using their body as a barometer for discovering healthy music choices for them. Think of it this way: when we listen to music, we plug in our body to not only the vibrations of the musical instruments, but also the intent of the musicians. Start building your music awareness today and enjoy the adventure as your whole body discovers the music.
