Pool Updates By Greg Martinez How-Do Neighbors! WOW! Another month gone and we have been having a great summer at our pool. I would like to mention a couple of rules that I have noticed being violated lately (OK - there’s a few): 1) No smoking in the pool area. This rule has actually been in place for some time, but is now going to be expanded to common areas around the pool as well. Think about it folks - it stinks, it creates litter and a potential fire hazard, and it’s a safety hazard for everyone walking around with bare feet, which is everyone at a pool. Besides, you’re at the pool to get some sun and physical activity. Let’s keep it a healthy environment. 2) Adult swim only for the last 10 minutes of every hour. ALL children must take a 10 minute rest period every hour. ALL means just that - ALL children. Yours don’t get an exemption just because you’re in the water with them. This rule exists because children have such a great time at the pool that they will literally exhaust themselves, or suffer mild hypothermia (when it’s cold enough) just to avoid getting out of the water and interrupting their fun. That leads to an obvious safety risk, which we all want to avoid. PLEASE - set a good example for your children and make them (and you) follow the rules. 3) No glass in the pool area. Again - the risk of breakage around a lot of bare feet is a safety risk that is 100% avoidable. So, let’s avoid it. 4) No alcohol in the pool area. Did you know that an over indulgence in alcohol will suppress your brain’s perceived need for air? It’s true, and if you decide that you don’t need to come up for air, and you’ve been drinking, and you’re under water...what do you think the risk is there? That’s right - you could pass out right there under water. Then your automatic breathing mechanism will kick in anyway. What do you think the result will be then? Let’s just avoid that risk too, shall we? Once again - this is why we have lifeguards, whose authority will not be questioned while they are on duty. If you have a problem with the rules as they are currently written, or the lifeguard’s enforcement of those rules, let myself or the SCOA board know and we will get it resolved. Let’s keep having a great summer folks and we’ll see you poolside... Greg Martinez and your friendly neighborhood Pool Committee

Pool UpdatesBy Greg Martinez

How-Do Neighbors! WOW! Another month gone and we have been having a great summer at our pool. I would like to mention a couple of rules that I have noticed being violated lately (OK - there’s a few):1) No smoking in the pool area.

2) Adult swim only for the last 10 minutes of every hour.ALL children must take a 10 minute rest period every hour.

3) No glass in the pool area.Again - the risk of breakage around a lot of bare feet is a safety risk that is 100% avoidable. So, let’s avoid it.

4) No alcohol in the pool area.Did you know that an over indulgence in alcohol will suppress your brain’s perceived need for air? It’s true, and if you decide that you don’t need to come up for air, and you’ve been drinking, and you’re under water...what do you think the risk is there? Architectural Control Committee ‘n scoop.” No one wants their children (or themselves) to step into someone else’s mess. Aside from smelly, pet messes are unhygienic. If your children have walking duty, remind them of this requirement, as well. This includes our sidewalks, streets, walking trails, parks, and most particularly—children’s play areas and residents’ yards.

NOTE: Another recurring “pet” concern: Barking Dogs. Though it’s in a dog’s nature to bark, allowing prolonged noise, particularly at night, shows discourtesy toward your neighbors, it’s also a violation of our deed restrictions. Please be a considerate pet owner. Your neighbors will be most appreciative.

* Violation Notices…If you receive a letter from Goodwin Management on behalf of the Homeowners Association citing a reported deed restriction violation, please bring your home into compliance within the allotted time period. As well, if you’ve any questions regarding any notice of violation or assessed fine(s), you may contact Bob Nardo, our property manager (contact info below) with your concern. If Bob is unable to resolve the issue directly with you, he will arrange for you to meet with the OA Board of Directors at one of their monthly meetings.

For those of you new to Stone Canyon, you may not be aware that all members of the ACC, as well as your Board of Directors and all supportive committees, are Stone Canyon residents, neighbors and volunteers. Like you, we all have busy schedules, and are committed to making Stone Canyon the best place to live and raise our families. That is the purpose of our community’s covenants and deed restrictions; so please take the time to review the DCCRs, as well as the ACC Guidelines. Both documents can be found on and downloaded from Stone Canyon’s website (www.stonecanyonoa.org).

Texas National Night Out - Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008introduced early in 1984 - with the event culminating on the first Tuesday in August.

That first year, 400 communities in 23 states participated in National Night Out. Nationwide, 2.5 million Americans took part in 1984.The seed had been planted. In subsequent years, participation has grown steadily. The 24th Annual National Night Out last August involved 35.4 million people in 11,310 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide. National Night Out 2008 will culminate on August 5th. Over 12,000 communities are expected to take part.

While the traditional ‘lights on’ and front porch vigils remain a part of NNO, activities have expanded considerably over the years to include block parties, cookouts, parades, visits from police, festivals, neighborhood walks, safety fairs, contests, rallies and meetings.

Peskin said, “It’s a wonderful opportunity for communities nationwide to promote police-community partnerships, crime prevention, and neighborhood camaraderie. While the one night is certainly not an answer to crime, drugs and violence, National Night Out does represent thekindofspirit, energyanddeterminationthatishelpingtomakemany neighborhoods safer places throughout the year. It [NNO] is a night to celebrate safety and crime prevention successes - and to expand and strengthen programs for the next 364 days.”*

Texas has selected Tuesday, 7 October 08 to celebrate National Night Out. Texas is a test State for the Fall program. I have pasted the following information from the National Night Out Website information for you. “The National Association of Town Watch (NATW) is a nonprofit, crime prevention organization which works in cooperation with thousands of crime watch groups and law enforcement agenciesthroughout the country. Since 1981, NATW has been dedicated to the development, growth and maintenance of organized crime and drug prevention programs nationwide. NATW’s network has grown to include over 6,500 crime, drug and violence prevention organizations.

National Night Out, ‘America’s Night Out Against Crime,’ was introduced by the Association in 1984. The program was the brainchild of NATW Executive Director Matt A. Peskin.

Inanefforttoheightenawarenessandstrengthenparticipationinlocal anticrime efforts, Peskin felt that a high-profile, high-impact type of crime prevention event was needed nationally. At that time, he noted that in a typical 'crime watch community', only 5 to 7% of the residents were participating actively. Due to the growth and success of these programs, he felt this percentage was too low. Subsequently, heproposedanationalprogramwhichwouldbecoordinatedbylocalcrime prevention agencies and organizations - but that would involve entire communities at one time. The first National Night Out was (Continued on pg. 7)
