Congratulations! We are so pleased to welcome you as an accepted student to the Landmark College Summer Session for Visiting College Students! Like it has for so many students who have participating in the program before you, we are confident that your participation in the program will provide you with a transformational experience. Not only will you gain an in-depth understanding of your learning differences and personal learning style and build learning strategies in the academic areas most difficult for you, but you will make good friends that will last long after the program is over.

This guide has been put together to give you an overview of the program and how to best prepare for your 5 weeks on campus. Our goal when you arrive on campus this July is to have you say “I’m ready”!

Enrollment Forms & Program Updates One of the first things you should start doing is completing the various forms that will be required for program registration. The more forms you complete and return ahead of time, the less time you will spend in line on your arrival to campus.

Beginning in April, all of the forms you will need to complete can be found on your Student Onboarding Portal. You will receive instructions on how to access your portal when you receive your Landmark College e-mail, username and password from our IT department.

New Student Orientation

For Students

New Student Orientation is your introduction to becoming a student and community member at Landmark College. We have planned a program that will do three things:

Give you a chance to meet and make connections with your fellow classmates. Help you acclimate to your new living & learning environment by giving you time to

settle into your residence hall and get to know your way around campus.

Help you prepare for the first week of your academic program by introducing you tothe program and some of the services available to you as a student.

For Families

In addition to the student programs, the College will offer optional orientation programs and workshops for families. These are intended to provide more in-depth information about the program, and give an opportunity for families to ask any question or raise any specific concerns before they leave campus.

Registration & Orientation Schedule

Sunday, July 7, 2019

10 am - 12 pm

Registration for Summer Session - Visiting College Students will be held in the Strauch Family Student Center.

After completing registration, students will move into their housing assignments.

10:30 am - 1 pm Brunch, Dining Hall (Families welcome to join students and staff at

lunch.)

1 – 1:30 pm Welcome session for students (required) and families (optional)

1:45 pm Students begin their afternoon of orientation. (This is the ideal point for

families and students to say good-bye)

The Academic Program

Session Overview

Our summer program features morning and afternoon classes, along with opportunities for sports, recreational activities and the chance to explore Vermont's beautiful countryside. In your application, you indicated a preferred track of study; Track A, which focuses solely on skills development or Track B, which includes our skills development course and an opportunity for you to earn transferable college credit in one of our credit electives.

Summer 2018: Courses for Visiting Students

Narrowing the Gap—Becoming A More Strategic College Student (Required for all Visiting Students)

This required, non-credit course is the key to Landmark College’s summer program, teaching visiting college students how to function better in school and improve everyday self-management. Through this structured, stimulating, and supportive course, you will learn strategies and resources for improving your executive function, working memory, study skills, and ability to meet commitments. You will become a self-advocate in identifying and experimenting with the kinds of support you need for success. The instructor for this course will serve the as the student’s academic advisor for the duration of the five-week program.

Track A—Developmental Writing Track (Students will choose one developmental writing course)

Structure, Style, and Strategies—Demystifying Academic WritingThis course examines in detail the various factors that may have caused students tostruggle with college writing, while taking a highly individual approach to thedevelopment of self-understanding and effective strategy use. Because most students inthe course have had the experience of being diagnosed or labeled with some type oflearning difference, the course uses self-understanding of learning differences and yoursocial context as a focus for writing assignments. Students are expected to completeregular writing assignments inside and out of class to improve fluency, to engage in avariety of strategies for planning, generating, and organizing papers, and to completeseveral papers.

Establishing an Effective Writing Process—Improving Your Academic FunctioningIn this course, students will learn and practice approaches to managing college writingassignments by generating daily writing and learning how to improve executivefunction. Included is the examination of various genres of writing. Students can elect totake this course for credit, and are required to submit a completed e-Folio of writingassignments demonstrating proficiency in writing skills.

Track B—Combined Developmental and Credit Track (Students will take their choice of a single credit elective course from the list below)

*All colleges don’t always accept all transfer credits. Students intending to transfer credits back to their home institution are encouraged to identify the most suitable course with their home institution.

**Landmark College strives to provide you with the courses you choose. However,

enrollment is limited to 15 students per class to ensure a highly personalized learning

experience. For this reason, classes are assigned on a first come, first come basis, based

on date of deposit. Students choosing to enroll in Track B only, please indicate your top

four elective choices, with #1 being your first choice.

Class Schedule (Monday-Friday):

Students can put together a program that allows them to get the most out of Landmark during the five weeks they are here. Courses meet five days a week (M-F) and each class runs for 2 ½ hours, either from 9-11:30 a.m. or from 1:30-4:00 p.m., with some exceptions. You will be enrolled in the required Narrowing the Gap class either in the morning or afternoon, depending on the other courses you choose. You may also elect to take credit physical education courses at the end of the day as a way to unwind, get in shape, meet people, and have fun. When you

are not in class, you can choose to engage with some of the many services that Landmark has to offer, which are listed within this booklet.

4:15 – 7:00 pm Optional PE Courses (2.25 hour classes once weekly.

* The Narrowing the Gap class may have an altered schedule. Some additional eveningand weekend programs may be scheduled.

Drake Center for Academic Support

Advising and academic support will be available to students through the Drake Center for Academic Support. Students can drop by or make appointments with faculty at the center. The Drake Center offers support for skills development and practice, often using the student’s coursework. The center is staffed by Landmark College faculty and offer support in the following areas:

Writing - Faculty support students in developing their writing at the sentence,paragraph, and essay level. Students can also work to develop their writing process,including generating ideas, organization of essays, revising and editing.

Reading and Study Skills - Faculty provide support and instruction in a wide range ofskills areas including reading strategies, comprehension, test preparation, note-taking,organization of time, time management and management of materials and information.

Advising - Faculty provide students with assistance in accessing appropriate supportservices, setting short- and long-term goals, navigating administrative processes,understanding College policy and procedure, and forming strategies to improve classperformance.

Library Services & Information Technology (IT)

Library

The library is a center of academic support for research skills and assignments. Research assistance is available by appointment or on a drop-in basis. Library staff members are also available to help students use the library's public computers for academic work.

In addition to research support, the Library also offers quiet individual and group study space. The Library is fully equipped, with access to a large selection of current periodicals, computers, DVD players, and comfortable seating.

The Summer Session for Visiting College Students also offers students the opportunity to visit the Learning Disabilities and AD/HD Research Collection on the Library's first floor. It houses one of the country's largest collections of books and videos on learning differences.

Information Technology Services (ITS)

Landmark College supports a wireless network that covers the entire campus (even our quad! Students who bring their computers, tablets, and other devices to campus will be granted access to the College’s wired and wireless network.

Desktop computers are available for coursework in the Landmark College Library - on the main floor and in the basement. These computers offer internet access, scanners, and software including: Microsoft Office ®, Inspiration ®, Kurzweil ®, Dragon Naturally Speaking ® and Photoshop ®. Students will have access to printers in the Library from these systems.

Tech Support

If you are having trouble with printing, scanning, or internet access on any of the public computers, please contact the Tech Support Center located on the second floor of the Library, 802-387-6800.

Living on Campus Your residence hall is more than just a place to sleep and do your homework. It is where the friendships start and connectedness to the rest of your Landmark experience begins.

Residence Hall Staff

The residence hall is staffed with a team of staff ready to help you. The Resident Director (RD) and Resident Assistants (RAs) will serve as excellent resources to you as you navigate through your two weeks on campus. The residence hall staff is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure living environment for students living on campus. RDs and RAs are part of the daily support and supervision, and are an excellent resource for students who have questions or need advice.

Resident Director (RD) a professional staff member who is responsible for life in your residence hall. The RD will directly supervise the RAs, is available to students to address a wide range of needs and are a good resource for students to use when they need to discuss important issues or concerns.

Resident Assistants (RAs) are paraprofessionals who live on campus and work in the halls. They provide direct support and supervision to program participants outside of the classroom and are great resources for questions about life on campus, as well as about important policies and procedures

The Residence Halls

All students in the Summer Session for Visiting College Students at Landmark College will be housed in double-occupancy rooms. The residence halls are single sex by wing with separate community restrooms and showers for men and women. The residence hall has its own social lounge and residential staff office, where the RDs and RAs perform duty coverage each night.

Non-Smoking Living Environments

Residence halls (as well as all campus buildings, parking lots and general grounds) are non- smoking environments. Smoking is permitted only in a designated smoking areas marked by an official sign. Please see the Student Handbook for more details regarding our smoking policy.

Roommate Assignments

Online Housing Preference Form will be available for the students enrolling in the Summer Session at the beginning of April (you will receive a separate e-mail about this in April or after you deposit (whichever comes later). The information you provide on this form will help us identify a roommate that most closely matches your lifestyle and living habits. Please be as honest and specific as possible when filling out this form, as it will improve the likelihood of finding a compatible roommate. Laundry Facilities

Washers and dryers and are located on the lower levels of Aiken Hall. Washers are $1.75 per load and the dryers are $1.50 per load (prices subject to change). The machines accept coins or debit cards through the ChangePoint system in each laundry room. They do not accept Campus Debit Cards.

Damage Deposit

All students will be required to submit a $50 damage deposit prior to moving into the residence hall. This deposit will be returned pending a satisfactory check-out of the room at the program end.

Emergency College Alerts (ReGroup)

Students will be automatically registered for ReGroup alerts (text, email & voicemail alerts). In the unlikely event of an emergency, such as an impending weather event or a power outage, the College will use ReGroup to send out important updates or instructions to the number you provided. Your Room & What you should bring

Each student is provided with these basics:

A bed & mattress (twin long, 80-inches) Chest of drawers Wardrobe or closet Desk, and desk chair Overhead light Each room has windows with blinds

You may wish to bring:

Desk/Study lamp Extension cords (with a surge-protector built-in) Laptop computer (The College is not able to provide technical support on personally-owned computers) A USB flash drive (this will aid in the use of public computers and printing) Shower shoes Shower tote Flashlight or battery-powered lantern Portable battery to charge electronic devices

Things you can’t have in the residence halls:

No open flames or heating coils. This includes candles, incense, toaster ovens, lanterns and space heaters Alcohol, alcohol containers, illicit drugs, or drug-use paraphernalia Explosives, firearms, firecrackers, weapons No decorations that hang from the ceiling of your residence hall room No pets No wooden constructions (lofts) or over-stuffed furniture that has not been pre-approved by the college

The College reserves the right to have a student remove an item, not on the list, that is deemed a fire or safety concern. If you are unsure about an item, email the Student Affairs Office at [email protected] BEFORE you pack it.

All of your belongings must be able to fit on your side of the room. Also, the college cannot be held liable for any lost or stolen items, so use your discretion when you decide what to bring. If you are bringing valuables on campus, make sure they are covered under your parents’ homeowner’s policy, or you may want to purchase renter’s insurance.

Program End

Classes are held through Friday, August 9, so students should plan to stay throughout the day on that Friday. All students are expected to check out of the residence halls and depart campus on Saturday, August 10th by noon.

Fitness & Recreation

Our Click Family Sports Center houses our state-of-the-art basketball court, lines for tennis, badminton and volleyball, along with a climbing wall. Pull-out bleachers regularly accommodate enthusiastic fans.

The Frost Hall Cardio room has treadmills, bikes, EFX machines and lighter weights. The Click Center offers a fitness room with a bike, rowing machine, treadmills and an EFX machine. The velocity pool in the Click Center offers swimmers the challenge of against-current conditioning. Our Click Family Sports Center houses our state-of-the-art basketball court, lines for tennis, badminton and volleyball, along with a climbing wall. Pull-out bleachers regularly accommodate enthusiastic fans.

Summer Session students will have access to all recreational facilities throughout the program. Regular hours for these facilities will be determined shortly before the program begins in July and will be posted. Activities

The classes that you will be taking are only the start of your learning experience at Landmark College. At Landmark, we believe that your entire environment should be focused on challenge, learning, scholarship, and fellowship in one way or another. During your summer session you will have other opportunities to exercise your mind, your body, and your spirit through many of the programs and activities that are sponsored by the College. Every day, there will be something active, interesting, and exciting to choose from.

You may want to use our off-campus shuttle service to take in a movie or some shopping during the week, or participate in some of our larger trips on the weekend. There will also be time that you just want to spend with your classmates and new friends. Together, you can take advantage of our offerings of on-campus social programs and off-campus excursions.

Residential Activities: On weeknights the residential staff will be hosting transitional activities. Activities will range from extracurricular activities, daily organization, living with a roommate, laundry 101, and social activities. On the weekends there will be additional fun activities planned for students.

Dining Facilities

All students in the Summer Session at Landmark College will have their meals in the Dining Hall, located on the ground floor of Alumni Hall. A café in the Strauch Family Student Center provides pay-as-you go service in the evenings when the dining hall is closed. If you have questions about dining services, or if you have specific dietary concerns, please contact Dining Services at 802-387-1668.

Counseling Services

Students in the Summer Session may access a Mental Health Professional if needed. If you would like to meet with a counselor and it is not an emergency, you may stop by the Health

Center (2nd floor of the Strauch Family Student Center) Monday – Friday between 9 am and 3 pm or you may call extension 1636 during regular business hours.

In the event of a mental health emergency, please contact your Resident Dean, the Resident Dean on Duty or Campus Security. They can assist you in accessing the appropriate resources on or off campus.

In life threatening emergencies, students may call 911 from any campus phone.

Confidentiality

The Counseling Center is a safe place for students. Students, 18 years of age and older, who visit the Counseling Center have the right to confidentiality. What is discussed with a counselor will stay within the Counseling Center, unless:

you give us written permission to do otherwise

you are a danger to self or others

we are specifically required by law (as in cases involving child abuse or if we are ordered by the court)

Health Services

Students in the Summer Session may access Health Services if needed. The phone number for Health Services is 802-387-6753. The Health Center (located on the 2nd floor of the Strauch Family Student Center) is staffed by the Director of Health Services (a Family Nurse Practitioner) and an LPN. The Health Center is open Monday through Friday according to posted hours. After hours, evening and weekend coverage is provided by on-call physicians at Brattleboro Primary Care. If medical services are required after hours, students should contact their Resident Dean or the Resident Dean on Duty for assistance in contacting the on-call physicians.

Health Services provides a wide array of services to students. Some of these services include: diagnosing and treating acute illnesses and injuries, managing chronic medical conditions, prescribing medications and other treatments, providing health counseling and referring to community agencies and resources.

Health Services provides confidentially to all students. Medical records are kept separate from academic records and can only be shared if you give us written permission to do otherwise or you are a danger to self or others

Remember to plan ahead if you are taking medication regularly

Students will be responsible for self-administrating and the safe keeping of their medications. Bring only enough medication to last for your 2 week stay. Keep it in the original bottles that identify the prescribing physician, the name of the medication, the dosage and the frequency of administration.

Cars on Campus

Landmark College recognizes that many students want and need on-campus access to a car (or motorcycle) for personal use and offers parking privileges to all students. The College is also responsible for the safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors. To facilitate vehicle use by

students and assure safety, the College has established vehicle regulations that are published in the Student Handbook.

All vehicles (including motorcycles, ATV, and snowmobiles) on Landmark College property must be registered with the Department of Safety & Security within 24 hours of the vehicles’ arrival on campus. If you bring your car to campus, vehicle registration forms are available at the Office of Safety & Security (Davis Hall, 802-387-6899). Completed forms, accompanied by copies of the valid state registration, valid insurance, and valid operator license, should be submitted to the Security Office. After submitting completed forms, you will receive a parking permit to affix to your car windshield.

Postal Services

Letter Mail: Letter mail will be available for pick-up in the Student Affairs Office Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Shipping Packages & Trunks: All packages and other deliveries are held in the business office in the administration building. Expedited packages would include deliveries by UPS, FedEx, etc. Your resident director will receive an e-mail notice when a package arrives.

It is strongly discouraged to send cash in the mail (checks can be cashed in the Bookstore).

College Bookstore

The Landmark College Bookstore carries a variety of items, ranging from shampoo and soap to pens and three-ring binders. It also carries a variety of Landmark College warm-ups, caps, and T-shirts.

To purchase items in the store, you may use checks, cash, or credit card (VISA, MASTERCARD, or DISCOVER). The bookstore's phone number is 802-387-6862.

Banking & Money

There is an ATM machine on the first floor of the Strauch Family Student Center and in the lobby of the dining hall. These machines accept most ATM cards and the fee is $2.00 per transaction (subject to change).

Cashing Checks

Landmark students are permitted to cash a check, travelers check, or money order in the College Bookstore. Checks must be from a parent, grandparent, or guardian or issued by Landmark College. Students can cash one check per week, and no check can exceed $200.00. Students must show positive identification, and they are not permitted to cash checks for other

students. A $50.00 service fee will be charged to any student for any check that is returned by the bank for any reason.

Campus Card

Students are encouraged to open a Campus Card Account at Landmark College. This account (accessible through the student ID card) allows students to make purchases at the College Bookstore, Fireside Café, beverage and snack vending machines, dining hall, and participating off-campus locations. The Campus Card Account is a convenient way for students to ensure access to spending money for snacks and supplies during the program. Funds can be added to the account at any time.

The College does not give cash advances from the Campus Card Account, and the campus card does not work in ATMs. If you need cash, you have the following options:

ATMs are available in the Dining Hall (Alumni Hall) entryway and on the first floor of the Strauch Family Student Center. The machines accept almost any credit or debit card. The transaction fee is $2.00 plus any fee your home bank may charge. The ATM is sponsored by Prosperity Bank and accepts the following cash networks: MasterCard, Cirrus, Visa, Plus, American Express, Discover, Star, Pulse, NYCE, CUZ4, AFFN, Accel, Quest, and Shazar.

Check cashing service is available at the College Bookstore.

From NYC and points South: Follow I-95 East to New Haven, Connecticut. In New Haven, take the I-91 North to New England. Travel north through Massachusetts and into Vermont. The driving time from New York City is approximately 4 and ½ hours.

From Boston and points East: Take the Mass Pike (I-90) to Springfield, Massachusetts or Route 2 to Greenfield, Massachusetts, then take I-91 North. Travel north through Massachusetts and into Vermont. Driving time from Boston is approximately 2 and ½ hours.

From Albany and points West: Take NY 7 East toward Troy/Bennington. In Bennington, follow signs to VT-9 East/Molly Stark Trail. In Brattleboro, merge onto I-91 North. Follow directions for “Once in Vermont” below. Driving time from Albany is approximately 2 hours.

Once in Vermont: Take exit #4 (Putney) off I-91 and proceed north on Route 5 for approximately two miles. Go past the center of Putney, (which includes a variety of restaurants and shops, a small green and the popular Putney General Store and Pharmacy) and turn right at the Landmark College sign (River Road). If arriving for New Student Orientation, take the second left onto Robert Rhodes Lane.

Travel by Air

The most convenient airport is Bradley International Airport in Hartford, Connecticut, about an hour and a half away by car.

Travel by Train

Take the Amtrak Vermonter train to Brattleboro from points south, beginning in Washington DC or from points north, beginning in St. Alban, VT. The northbound train arrives and departs Brattleboro at 5:10 p.m. daily. The southbound train arrives and departs Brattleboro at 12:34 p.m. daily.
