International students: the student visaIf you do not require a student visa, please turn to page 3: Academic study.
Applying for a student visa
All international students who do not currently have the right of residency in Australia will need to apply for a student visa. This can be a lengthy process, it is advisable to contact the nearest Australian Consulate immediately to determine the processing time of your student visa application. As an educational provider, we have little to no influence on the timeliness of visa applications.
Please check the website of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection for the most up to date information on all Australian visas: http://www.border.gov.au , and ensure that you complete your visa application as early as possible.
Under no circumstances should you leave your home country without first securing a student visa.
Visa conditions
You are strongly advised to read and understand the conditions of the student visa. For a list of the explanations of your visa conditions, please refer to the information booklet under your visa subclass at: http://www.border.gov.au
Any breach of a student visa condition may result in cancellation of your visa.
The AGSM MBA Program is obliged under the Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 (ESOS Act) to monitor the enrolment of international students and to inform the Department of any breach of visa conditions. It is your responsibility to ensure that you satisfy the requirements of these conditions.
New Student Welcome Guide 2017 — Class of 2018 3
Academic study The AGSM MBA Program is a full-time program which is traditionally completed over 16 months. The program mixes traditional classroom learning with group exercises and has a two stage structure. The first stage comprises 9 core courses completed in 2 sessions.
Completion of the Program requires a total of 96 units of credit (uoc). All courses are worth 6 uoc.
The first course, which all students are required to undertake, is Foundations of Management. This is an intensive 10 days which provides an overview of the role and skills requirements of a general manager in the workplace. The course provides knowledge and applicable skills in the area of team skills; leadership and communication skills and managerial effectiveness. In addition there will be a specific focus on business ethics and the role it plays in equipping managers for business success. This is an exciting and important course that will provide the foundation for core learning and development.
The second stage is made up of 7 elective courses and the opportunity to undertake international exchange and/or an internship.
The 9 core courses taught in the first phase of the full-time MBA program span the core disciplines of Accounting and Finance, Economics, General Management, Marketing, Organisation Behaviour, and Statistics and Entrepreneurship.
During the elective phase of the program, students choose a program of study based on elective courses that extend and integrate material from the core disciplines.
Teams
During the core of the AGSM MBA Program the class will be divided into teams. The teams are close knit groups designed to support the team-based learning objective embedded within the program. Each of the teams consist of approximately 5-6 students. Some assignments are undertaken in the designated teams. Further information on team allocation will be provided during Orientation.

Information Technology
AGSM MBA Programs IT requirements
AGSM MBA Program students are advised to have a Windows compatible laptop which can be dedicated to their studies as UNSW IT can only provide "best effort" support with Apple iOS.
Access to technology on campus
Touchdown points exist around campus which can be used by all students for AC power connection and battery re-charge opportunities.
There are also a number of service centres which provide desktop computing capabilities.
UniWide – UNSW Wireless Network
UniWide is the UNSW Campus Wireless Network for UNSW students. It offers fast, secure wireless network connectivity from a wide range of locations across UNSW’s Campuses. Wireless access is available to all current students. UniWide can be accessed via any Wi-Fi-enabled laptop or mobile device that support WPA wireless security. For more information visit
https://www.it.unsw.edu.au/students/uniwide/about.html
Recommended licensed software
Students should ensure that their laptops are equipped with licensed copies of standard business software.
Virus prevention measures
In the current environment, there is a high risk of computers being infected with a virus or other malware (worms, trojans, logic bombs etc). Such an infection could potentially disrupt or even disable the AGSM MBA Programs local and remote infrastructure network. The AGSM MBA Program network is constructed with a number of active virus prevention measures, as there are many avenues for a virus infection to penetrate and spread.
Therefore students must always have an anti-virus utility active on their laptop. It must be kept up-to-date through downloading updates from the vendor’s website. The vendor used for the anti-virus software must provide a frequent automatic check and update service. In addition, laptops must be patched to the level specified by Microsoft to avoid known exposures at the operating system level.

16 AGSM MBA Programs
International exchange The International Exchange Program at AGSM MBA Programs provides an excellent opportunity to expand your international networks, enhance the scope of your multicultural interactions and access some of the other top business schools of the world. It also provides increased learning opportunities by allowing you to target other business schools with a reputation for excellence in specific areas.
Students receive credit for study at the partner school and their AGSM MBA Program tuition fees cover the tuition fees of the exchange partner school. Students cover additional expenses, such as airfare, accommodation, course notes, health cover and visa fees.
Exchange placements are allocated according to a fixed pre-negotiated quota of positions that are made available by partner schools. Students interested in exchange must participate in a competitive selection process. The AGSM MBA Program Office will not be able to guarantee that students will be selected to participate in exchange at their preferred institutions. Outgoing students must also manage their expectations regarding obtaining enrolment in their preferred courses at partner schools. AGSM MBA Programs may not intervene with enrolment restrictions imposed by partner schools via competitive enrolment processes, prerequisite requirements, or other academic eligibility policies. In addition, it is the responsibility of each student to research and assess the visa requirements that are applicable to his/her own circumstances and to pursue all relevant processes.
Approximately 50% of AGSM MBA Program students participate in the International Exchange Program each year. In their place AGSM MBA Programs receives students from our partner business schools over the course of the academic year. This means that those students who choose not to go on exchange also derive the benefit of diversity from their interactions with this group of students.

Living in SydneyFor a Sydneysider, the benefits of the city are obvious: the harbour, the beaches, the cultural life linked to the Opera House, the ready access to spectacular countryside such as the Blue Mountains and the wine country. Most would agree that Sydney is one of the world’s outstanding cities.
Sydney is the capital of New South Wales with a state population of around 6.5 million. Sydney is a major industrial, business and trading centre. It is an exciting, cosmopolitan city that offers more entertainment, shopping and sightseeing than any other place in Australia. Its population of 4 million people live in suburbs spreading out 55km from the city centre. The harbour, one of the largest and most spectacular in the world, is famous for the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House; it is also a very busy waterway crossed by ships, ferries, fast catamarans and sailing boats.
Sydney’s other cultural attractions include libraries, public and private art galleries and museums, theatres, botanic gardens and parks throughout the city and suburbs. Sydney’s restaurants and cafes offer a diverse range of modern Australian and ethnic food, serving their multicultural society.
People in Australia come from a diverse range of ethnic backgrounds ranging from Anglo-Celtic and European cultures through to South American, Asian and Middle Eastern cultures. Australian seasons are opposite to those in the northern hemisphere.
Summer: December – February Autumn: March – May Winter: June – August Spring: September – November
Sydney has a pleasant climate. It rarely falls below 5°C. The average summer temperature is approximately 25°C (80°F), although temperatures can reach 40°C during hot spells. Average monthly rainfall ranges from 75 to 130mm.
Further detailed information on living in Sydney and preparing for student life in Sydney can be obtained by searching the International Student Services website at:

Housing & Accommodation
There are two main options:
1. On-campus accommodation in UNSW Residential Colleges, including New College Village. Please see www.rc.unsw.edu.au
2. Rented houses or flats.
Please refer to the extensive Accommodation Booklet online for further information.
Private real estate agents, newspapers, local papers
Many real estate agents can be found in the suburban shopping areas around the university. It is best to visit the agent, as notices about properties for rent are usually posted in the agent’s window, and you can make enquiries and obtain the keys to inspect the property. You should also check the newspapers on Wednesdays and Saturdays, as well as the weekly local papers. Agents and property owners generally prefer lease periods of six months or more.
International and interstate students
If you have rented before please bring along a letter of recommendation from your previous real estate agent or landlord, as some real estate agents ask for this information.
If you have not rented before you will need to bring documentation to show that you are able to pay rent. For example, photocopies of ID, passport, proof of money in the bank (letter from bank/institution or person if they are providing you with income whilst studying), receipt showing you are going to be studying in the AGSM MBA Programs.
It is also worth noting that other MBA students might be looking to share with fellow classmates. It can be worthwhile securing temporary accommodation initially to give you the flexibility to find accommodation with other MBA students before you have started the Program.
Because of the size of the university (more than 50,000 students) and the attractiveness of the location, accommodation is keenly sought after. We advise you therefore, to take steps early about obtaining accommodation.
The average cost for a room without meals is between AUD$170 and AUD$230 per week, rental flats range from AUD$380 to AUD$550 per week. Usually a two to four weeks’ bond is required. A bond is a deposit you pay at the start of a tenancy. It is held as security in case you damage the flat or house, or leave with rent still owing. You cannot claim back the bond until the end of the tenancy. Bond is payable in addition to rent in advance (either 2 or 4 weeks).
20 AGSM MBA Programs
For international students, please note that most Australian units are rented unfurnished. For more detailed information and current rental listing please visit:
www.housing.unsw.edu.au or www.domain.com.au or www.realestate.com.au
Public Transport
The University of New South Wales is well served by public transport, with numerous bus routes passing the campus from the city and many suburbs. An extensive train system, approximately 20 or 30 minutes from the campus, can take you throughout much of the Sydney metropolitan area, as well as to NSW country and interstate areas.
Banking Facilities
On campus, the Commonwealth Bank and the Universities Credit Union offer full banking and financial services. The ANZ Bank has an automated teller machine and can be accessed at all hours.
Living expenses
Working and studying
The AGSM MBA Programs believes that the pressure of the full-time MBA for the first year is sufficiently high to preclude the opportunity to undertake paid employment during this time. As an international student your visa does not provide you with automatic work rights. It will be necessary for you to make a separate application through the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. http://www.border.gov.au
Arrangements for partners & children
If you are planning to bring your dependents to Australia, you will need to consider their visas, living and schooling arrangements. International students are eligible to apply for their family's entry on a dependents visa provided the study program lasts for at least a year. Dependents are granted a Temporary Residents Visa for the purpose of accompanying their student partner/parent. For further information please refer to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection website at: http://www.border.gov.au
Please note: The AGSM MBA Recruitment & Admissions Team are unable to assist with any queries regarding visa applications, work eligibility, schooling, day care or accommodation. With regards to accommodation, we have compiled some general guidelines for your reference which can be found in the Accommodation Guide.

Students must pay all their fees by the due date on the invoice statement for their program enrolment to remain valid. UNSW reserves the right, subject to appropriate notification, to withhold all services and cancel the enrolment of any student who fails to pay all fees by the due date.

Charging of fees
• Students who discontinue after the Census Date forfeit the tuition fee for that course and will be required to pay the course fee when they re-enrol.
• Students who fail a course forfeit the tuition fee for that course and will be required to pay the course fee when they re-enrol. Students with scholarships will also be required to pay the course fee when they re-enrol.
• Students with an outstanding debt owing to UNSW (regardless of debt amount and where debt was incurred) at the Census Date will have a financial block placed on their student record. Students with a financial block will have their access to AGSM MBA Program systems revoked, will be unable to receive results or course materials and will be ineligible to enrol in future sessions or to graduate.
• Students with outstanding debts that are placed in the hands of a debt collection agency will be liable to pay any fees relating to collection of outstanding debts, for example collection agency fees and legal costs.
Tuition fees
Tuition fees are charged at the beginning of each MBA Session on the basis of the total number of units of credit the student is enrolled in for that term, as set out in the Table of Fees. Statements will reflect appropriate adjustments for deposits and scholarships by census date. Invoice statements will be available online. For GST transactions, tax invoices will be available on request.
International students on an Australian student visa are required to obtain Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), or equivalent, prior to arriving in Australia.
