this document governs your entire studies and is thus very important Please note:
there is an English version for your convenience, but only the GERMAN VERSION is
LEGALLY BINDING

SPO Specific Section, Example IBM
SPO General Section: Bonus-Malus-System
If you pass a module you will receive bonus points (= module credits)
→ in accordance with the ECTS for a given module
If you fail any graded or non-graded work you will receive malus points
(also applies to unexcused absence)
De-registration is possible for any piece of work on the first attempt only
→ An application has to be submission to examination office in writing no later than
the day prior to the exam – (Dangers: BAföG and exceeding time limits)
→ will avoid malus points
Medical certificate have to be filed with the examinations office without delay
→will avoid malus points

4 *graded piece of work = Prüfungsleistung (graded)
non-graded piece of work = Studienleistung (pass/fail)

SPO General Part: Malus Points
If you accumulate 24 malus points (during Grundstudium*):
→ Advice session with the dean of studies
Once you accumulate 49 malus points during the Grundstudium
you will automatically be de-registered (§21)

SPO General Part: Time Limits
If you are unable to complete your Grundstudium (all modules the SPO lists
for the first two semesters) within four semesters, you will be automatically
exmatriculated(§ 5 Abs. 3)
Exception: If the need for extra time was caused by factors outside of your control
→ File a formal objection against deregistration (=exmatriculation) citing these factors.
Possible reason: Illness documented by medical certificate („one off“ medical
certificates for each specific exam will not be relevant!)
Indicative that the failure was in your control after all, would be: Voluntary de-
registration from or repeated failure of exams

Cheating or use of non-permitted aides during exams will result in a „fail“ (5,0) grade (§11(4)).
SPO General Part: Admission to Hauptstudium*
Automatic admission with at least 54 bonus points
If you have at least 44 bonus points (and up to 53) you can apply to the dean of
studies for admission to Haupstudium
Alternatively, you can, while you complete outstanding modules, also apply to the dean
of studies to pull forward Haupstudium modules (up to 12 ECTS) to complete at the
same time

Criterion(§ 14, 1 SPO): comparable competences, mostly from other universities
Only in case of first-time registration
Application within the first three weeks of the semester necessary
See your Dean of Studies for application
SPO Specific Section: Appeals
If you disagree with any of the issues regulated by the SPO (e.g. the way your exam was
graded), please contact:
firstly, the relevant lecturer
if this does not resolve the matter, speak with the Dean of Studies
then (if still not resolved) contact the Faculty Examination Board
(Fakultätsprüfungsausschuss (FPA))
and only then the Head of the Examinations Office
As always, please ensure you observe the regulations governing appeals!
